Changing car-dock audio output in non-stock roms? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

So Verizon's car dock for the S3 allows you to send the audio out through the micro USB port, so you only need one cable connected to the dock instead of two. However, the phone defaults to having the audio still come out the internal speaker or headphone jack -- you have to change it via a setting option in the stock rom that the AOSP-based roms don't have.
Is there any way back-door way to get to toggle that, or should I stick with stock-based roms if I want to use the car dock?

it really is the answer to everything. just make it switch the audio when you plug in the dock.

Emulate an Iphone USB interface to a car radio?

I recently purchased a car that has a USB interface for the radio. My wife's Iphone fully integrates with it, of course, and via the radio's interface but the Samsung only mounts as a connected drive.
I have read other thread where people were able to force their Samsung into car dock mode by modifying a USB cable. Is there anyway to just do that in software?
you misunderstand what car mode is.
Good luck! I switched back to my iPhone for this reason alone. I listen to a lot of podcasts and I couldn't get this to work via the USB interface and I don't have bluetooth on my head unit. I can't seem to get the newest update to see if that works either. Would love to know if someone has a solution that doesn't require making your own cable.
yo sleze..what model car if i may ask?
i made my own auxiliary input for my car(i know its not a big feat) with an old dsl filter a soldering gun and some resistors and capacitors.. i might be interested in creating a usb interface for my car and then maybe i can give you some insight .. big maybe
well you will never get the headunit to command the phone, android simply doesn't support anything like that. but you can get audio over USB which is triggered by shorting a couple pins through a resistor. ill have to look up that thread but there may already be a dongle or cable out there to do this. it may not be say "android carmode" but if you find the name of the USB standard that they use to trigger it you can find the appropriate cable or dongle.
isnt there a usb headset available that can stop/start music and next track functionality ..if so you could (in theory) make a usb interface that would allow the head unit or in my case steering wheel control to work similarly?
no it wont command the phone. the framework and apps don't have an interface for that. plus the headunit would need special drivers if the phone had that capability. the issue with android is too many manufacturers do things different so unless google comes out with that on a nexus and tells maunfacturers the way it needs to be implimented I don't see any hope.
there might be a way to echo the commands through adb if you have a computer in your car. but I guess you'd have to know how the music app works for that.
we All know apple has the accessories market down pretty good. even though some older accessories don't work with the newest hardware. that's the one thing apple is good for, a wide accessory market.
now if you have a Bluetooth controler and it uses the right protocol to work with thw samaung bluetooth stack then you might be able to map keys to certain functions with an app or simple configuration file editing. but as far as USB goes I don't think android is designed to host USB input devices. there is limited otg usb support on certain special galaxy s and nexus 1 and nexus s kernels but nothing native.
maybe some 3rd party root app could eventually be developed but I haven't heard of one yet.
besides all that, who knows if the head unit will know to go into audio over USB mode in the first place, even if you get the phone in that mode, will the headunit be looking for USB storage and an iPhone interface only? was it designed to accept USB audio other than an iPod interface?
well with my car BMW mad a usb interface for ipod/iphone.. i hate mac so scratch that.. i also have a usb interface(i can control radio/nav functions via carputer) that is designed to work with I-BUS (intelligent input bus) which is what some BMW's used for audio/nav integration. some newer models actually come with a usb input that was designed to work with most media players..so i thought maybe with some time/frustration/rum..i might be able to make it work..

It still to my understanding that on BMW iDrive system will have full integration with iOS. We had a 2010 5 series at home with all the bell and whistles on it, and even then it would only display song names. With my iPod we got full library options, podcast too. Android will only be able to be used as a mounted devices.

I used to have an iPhone and installed this kit http://usaspec.com/product.php?ProductID=18. After switching to android I just use a 2.5mm to RCA cable to plug in to the same unit. Not worried too much about integrating with car controls - I also use a phone mount. Does your head unit have any AUX IN connectivity? Maybe on the rear? If so just play audio through the headphone jack. There's always the lighter socket RF adapter option too, but audio quality with those things can be lame.
Samsung-SGH-I997 Infused 2.3.3
yeah the headphone amp on the infuse has pretty good fidelity too. the headphone Jack might not be as convenient as a single USB that also charges the phone but I'd you want to use the playlists and 3rd party apps like Pandora or Google music its the best way. audio over USB needs the dock or special cable to trigger but I don't know which headunits will support that.

Force audio through USB

Is there any method to force audio to play through the USB?
I have a current working setup in my car where I have a 30 pin splitter to usb and 3.5 mm cable to both charge and listen to music (pandora, apollo, play music). This method works just fine. But I was hoping that I could use a USB OTG and then just force audio through the USB OTG to the 30 pin ipod connection. Therefore I would no longer need to also have the 3.5 mm connected. Below are all the connnections I have in the car both current (working) and future (what I hope will work/but does not as of yet).
Basically I need a method to force analog audio through the micro USB of the GS3. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Current Solution Working:
Male 30 Pin Dock connector > Female 30 Pin split to Female USB/Female 3.5mm > 3.5 mm male-male to audio input and usb to microUSB to charge
(photo 1 > photo 2 > photo 3)
Due to this setup, I know that the audio going into the usb and 30 pin is in analog and not digital. Since it involves connecting to the analog 3.5 mm.
Therefore I was hoping I could force some dock mode or analog audio out through USB.
Hopeful Future Solution:
Male 30 pin dock connector > Female 30 pin to Male USB > Female USB to Micro USB (USB OTG Cable)
(photo 4 > photo 5)
Again, if anyone knows a way to force the dock mode or force all the audio for all applications to go through the microUSB in analog, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks,

You should be able to trigger Car Mode using Tasker. It is under Tasks -> Display -> Car Mode. I don't have a dock to see if it works though.

Ah, I wish it was that easy. I just tried it, but with car mode enabled the audio still plays through speaker. So it looks like that is a no go.
I just found this in the forums and going to see if this might work:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=980937
Let me know if there are any comments on these methods or any others.
Thanks
EDIT: Looks like it still needs to be connected to a dock, whether its a car dock or home dock. So still no method to force analog audio through the USB. If only there was a simple switch
There are several threads in accessories that show dock and cable building and using a certain resister value on two of the pins to trigger dock mode and audio out through the usb. Or buy the infuse dock for $18 and an extension cable (and take it apart for the circuit board as I explain in one of the threads) and you are good to go.

Looks like there is an HTCpedia cable that does this. Would this work (both charge and usb out) instead of having to make the cable myself?shop.htcpedia.com/htc-usb-cable-activates-car-dock-app.html?campaign_id=12
So if I got a car deck with usb input I wouldn't be able to just connect the phone via usb and play music through it while charging?
Using my Samsung Infuse 4G Car dock.....i can play sounds through my car using the 3.5mm cable plugged into the back of the dock w/ it using just the usb connector to the phone. So somehow there should be a way to as sound is transferred though the usb port, tho it is prob something on the circuit board of the car dock that converts it. It dose put my Gs3 into car mode. Call's do not go through the the cable tho but to get anything to play you must goto Settings > Dock > Auto Output Mode (Checked). Hope maybe that helps you.
I had the same problem. Here is the solution go into settings go to dock its near the bottom then make sure you have audio output mode checked so it says use external speakers. When I do that I am able to use my cats speakers through my car dock to play the sound.

[Q] Native USB Audio support in JB?

Hi,
I read somewhere that one of the new features that JB brought to android was the ability to use USB audio devices natively, i.e support for external USB DAC's.
This should enable us to use USB speakers (I'm NOT talking about the ones that draw only power from USB) such as my Arctic P531 for instance.
However when I plug in my headphones to my infinity's dock, the audio still plays from the tablets speakers! I can control the system volume by the volume control on my headphone but audio comes only through the tablets speakers :crying:
Anybody know if i'm doing something wrong? or not doing something?
Has anybody gotten a USB audio device working on their infinity?
BTW, FYI, I am running stock JB, stock bootloader, stock everything.
come on... anybody?? any help?? i cant be the only one here??

[Q] Infuse 4G's 4.1.1 ROM Download

I've been able to redirect audio to the phone's earpiece and speaker using the SoundAbout app, but can't use the Samsung's dock audio options: speaker and "line out" outputs.
Have read that USB audio used to work with Samsung docks in v4.1.1 and stopped working in v4.1.2.
Where can I get a stable v4.1.1 custom ROM with GAPPS?

so you want a rom that will force your Samsung home dock to play sound on the integrated speaker?
The dock has an integrated speaker and a 3.5mm "line out" connector, and after checking again, none work.
I want to use the "line out" option of the Samsung dock.

ohhhhh okay...........well I'm on 4.4.4 CarbonRom and my brother has a stereo with usb dock and aux cable and it wont work with the dock but it will work with the aux cable but somehow sounds better when i have both plugged in...........and have you tried just using the dock or aux cable separately? or together? and the android version might have something to do with it.....but i can't check for you since i don't have a Samsung dock :/
edit: just saw the video nvm what i said......why not just connect your charger and use the aux cable to play sound without using the dock?
What do you mean by aux cable?
The other option is to connect to the headphone connector, but the "line out" must have a cleaner sound for amplification.
And you don't get the headphone's cable sticking out from the top of the phone when the phone is on the dock/desk.

I think he means one and the same (Aux cable of the sound system in the headphone jack and not the Dock's line out jack).
Not an optimal solution, I know, but given that if a 4.1.1 ROM was available, you wouldn't want it, as it is affected by the nasty Heartbleed bug. (4.1.2 and up is okay).
But maybe you could try older, that is, Entropy's CM9 (4.0.4). The ICS/JB versions were developed so fast that there was too little time to squash the bugs, and CM9 is supposedly a prime example of that, but four your needs, it's worth a shot.
The little booklet included with the dock says:
DOWNLOADING OPERATING SOFTWARE
for your Infuse 4G Desktop Dock or Car Dock
3) Type Samsung Car Home or Samsung Desk Home in the search box
But Google Play says the app is not compatible with the Infuse 4G (maybe it doesn't like KitKat in the Infuse 4G). Even tried Market Helper to bypass compatibility check and still couldn't download the app.

have you tired just looking for the apk on Google then putting it on your sdcard then installing it from there?
Tried APK Downloader webpage in Firefox (APK Downloader), didn't work.
Maybe the Chrome extension version works better, but is it safe to use user/password/ID with this extension? Probably not worse than Market Helper.
Found v2.3 for v2.3.7 (sounds fishy) here ..

Headphone Adaptor

I have recently got a new U11 and I have been unable to get the USB-C Headphone Adaptor to work. I have had the problem with stock and custom ROM's. I have tried another adaptor without any luck.
I have tried deleting the audio jack toolkit and also enabling and disabling the USB Audio Routing.
The supplied USB-C headphones work fine, but I really need the adaptor working.
I'm glad to know I'm not the only one with this problem. I wonder if the adapter doesn't work if using headphones with too high of an impedence rating, perhaps? I just figure I got a bad unit.
Perhaps your USB-C port is dirty? I used a tiny flat plastic piece to scrape the dirt off the pins in mine and now the included usb-c headphones don't disconnect as much as they used to. Make sure you're extra careful not to destroy the pins.
Also I had limited success getting the 3.5mm adapter to work on LineageOS, while on stock it works just fine.
I have tried with 2 different phones now, and neither phone worked, and as both phones were brand new I would hope that the USB port was clean.
I have also tried with 3 different sets of headphones, a couple of cheap headphones and a pair of decent Sennheiser.
I had contacted HTC support and I am still waiting to hear what they say, but in the meantime I have installed this Google Play Store Audio Router from the play store and I am now getting audio to my headphones through the adaptor
I had this problem and I fixed it by changing the following setting in the developer settings:
Go to Settings > Developer settings and turn on Disable USB audio routing and turn it back off again. Maybe reboot between the two steps I'm not sure if I did that.
If you don't have the Developer settings, google how to activate that.

Unfortunately that didn't work on my device.
The audio jack toolkit needs data access. Check to see if this is enabled under apps, audio jack toolkit, data usage. If you're using powersave mode, you need to give unrestricted access.
