OTA Updates - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

If I root my S3 how does that affect over the air updates from Samsung? If JB is released Wednesday will I still be able to DL it and would it unroot the device? Also, aside from apps to sd hacks what are the main advantages of rooting?

Never download OTA updates if you are rooted, especially unlocked. There will be an OTA update that is safe for us to use here on the forums. Too many benefits to list. Overclocking, better battery life, get rid of bloatware that slows the phone down, full control of how the phone works and looks.

I guarantee jb will be released here long before verizon does it. In fact check out the progress in the tmobile port thread in development. It's only been leaked for two days. I predict a beta build by Monday at this rate.

Yeah like the others said, wait it out. Allot of great devs around here will have JB ready to go and much better than stock.

say I just wait for the OTA official JB update, does it work the same way or will my apps and homescreen setups remain?

Since a clean install is highly recommended then yes you will have to resetup everything. But you can backup using titanium and restore your apps

TiBu will backup your apps and all their data along with call logs and sms/mms as well. What you're looking at losing is the shortcuts and widgets on your homescreen(s) since you'll be moving to a new launcher (unless the new ROM has the same version of TouchWiz???). I found it useful to take screenshots of my home screens and send them to dropbox so I can place the new shortcuts exactly where the old ones had been. It takes me about a half an hour to do it. Which is a lot better than the two hours it took to download all my apps and set up a virgin S3.

[Q] T Mobile update 11/21/2011

My daughter's phone this morning had an update from T-Mobile. I told her not to install it, as it may revoke root.
She clicked on it (kids....), but luckily it says it's been post-poned until the 22nd (tomorrow)..
Just wondering if anyone has any idea what it is?
I know any OTA updates may potentiall revoke root, but just wondering if anyone else has gotten this.
The worst it could do is overwrite your root, but it wouldn't take that ability away, you would just need to re-root it after the update was completed. I heard some rumors that KJ2 was being pushed out as an official update, but I'm not entirely sure.
It's 100% true or i wouldn't have posted it. I got the update via Kies. It's coming OTA soon.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
Whats KJ2?
Also im running Gingerbreak on it, if it revokes the root, would the thing even boot up?
I got it today. No obvious changes but it does seem to work a bit smoother.
Gingerbreak? you mean GingerClone? Gingerbreak is the rooting method for Gingerbread (2.3).
KD1 was the original stock firmware, then they pushed KG2 as an update, and the latest update is KJ2, which includes some bugfixes and not many other changes.
You can still root after the update. KJ2 is seriously worth it. The phone runs so smoothly now. Although, I still think this is TM's way of staving us off until they release GB. XD

Sorry, you are correct
So it's safe to install the update? I'll tell her to do it as soon as I get home.
is anything else different? I generally try to let others test the waters first, since the last "update" merely removed a useful shortcut function and added Google Books as bloat.

Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
I went ahead and grabbed the update off Kies. So far, it looks like the persistent memory leak issues have been addressed in the Touchwiz/Zipwip software package. Also, my battery performance has returned to what I expected with KD1 (given my device's configuration).
I haven't encountered any drawbacks to upgrading. No reason to stick with KG2 or KD1 at this point--unless you fell in love with a custom...

I am running gingerclone as well, i got the notice for the update but postponed it, I didn't know if it would be safe to run since i wasn't on a stock rom, I got tired of seeing the update icon so i let it run, it failed.
The phone rebooted and I have not seen the update notice again.
I have TouchMIUIwiz v3 and I also ran the update after getting sick of the constant reminder and icon. It failed and disappears for a few days then come back. I've repeated the process a few times now.
Update installed fine for her and nothing is too different. Safe to go.

[Q] New OTA Update

Got the new OTA update this week on Skyrocket on my rooted phone. It will down load but when it reboots to install it starts up in in Clockworkmod screen so does not Install. What can I do to install update????
Please search the forums before posting nonsense. You can't receive OTA updates using a custom recovery. You need to be stock. Odin back to stock ICS and then try.

Why are people in these forums so rude to someone who is just asking a simple question? Because I would like to have my GS2 on a full jelly bean firmware that's not buggy and that is not ICS. I've tested the full jelly bean on another device and it is a lot smoother and definitely better in all aspects than ICS. In my opinion anyway.

This isn't a jellybean upgrade tho. Its just some enhancements and a new modem to ICS.
So, I don't WANT the upgrade, but Device management keeps loading up and won't go away unless I hit the home key. It keeps popping up and won't be satisfied until I download the upgrade, which I do not want to do. Is there any way to turn it off?

How is that rude? I asked why you would go through the trouble to get such a minor stock update. This isn't jb, man. It's a maintenance update. Chill out
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk 2
JB hasnt even officially been released for the Galaxy S3 and the chances of SR getting it before S3 is 0.004855% and there is no "official" word on if its even going to come out for Skyrocket yet alone if ATT will go through with it. They did say Samsung Galaxy S2 LTE but that can also mean just the international version or whatever.
Remember it has to go through Samsung then ATT.
Your best bet for JB right now is the AOSP based ones.

He's not being rude, that was a legitimate question. I would ask the same. And trust me, a small update like this one wouldn't be JB. Sad, but you can get that idea out of your head. Besides, I'd scream if the SR got official JB before the S3

Good for Enterprise on 11/15 JB Leak?

Hey guys-
I use Good for Enterprise on my gs3, currently running stock ICS. I want to flash the new stock rooted JB leak (11/15 kernel) but since Good is not officially supported on JB with this device, my supervisor is telling me not to do it since it could cause the app to not work right. I am rooted with an unlocked bootloader just itching to flash this...
Getting new PINs for the app are not an issue, since I am one of the Good admins in my company.
Anyone know if it is ok for me to do this? I think he is being ridiculous about this, considering we know it has gs3 support and JB support. Sprint has has JB for weeks already!
Doesn't this app check for root? The company I work for uses Good and a buddy had a S3 rooted (Sprint) and the admins said he couldn't use it because he was rooted. If you put on a stock not rooted image then I would think it would work unless JB gives it problems.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
Try it. Make sure you do a nandroid backup first. If you run into a problem you can just revert back to what you were using before you flashed and pick up like you never wiped all data apps and info are restored.

I have been rooted for a few months now, and have not come across an issue... I have read that it checks for root also, but maybe the way my company configured it, it doesn't matter?
I am the guy in my office that configures the PINs and i can see device status for everything, and mine seems normal.

Your employer can choose whether to allow Good on a rooted device. Mine allows it, and Good works fine on my GS3 with the first JB release.. Except for the "secure browser".. Apparently that does not support JB yet.

My Note has just been upgraded to 4.1.1 by OTA. After being eager to discover the new features, i realised that All the apps which worked well and fast before now have been slowly. Please tell me what happened with my note and should i do now to improve it? Or i must downgrade to the 4.0 ?

Factory reset after backing up apps and data or take Note to a Samsung service centre .

Its was an OTA and not installed using ODIN so there was no need to wipe.
Unfortunately thats is the case with most of the OTA give it a few days things get a little better

still downloading. it took forever to "check for update". Some apps have updates (like Facebook) that give option to add the app to an SD card. This is probably what it is. Im a noob to android btw.. just letting people know an update is out.
I do not think this is wise, but I think the update is a patch that blocks the loki unlock the devs achieved. need to be careful with these updates as the devs have warned us about. I could be wrong here.
Oh well. let us know the outcome if you don't mind.

You are correct - it's usually a good idea to hold off on taking any OTA updates before knowing what they do. To keep from getting OTA updates, use something like Titanium backup to freeze or otherwise disable three specific apps:
Aou said:
Correct. To block future OTA updates, "Freeze" the following three applications:
AT&T Software update Vxx_x_xxxx_x_x
FWUpgrade x.x.x
LocalFOTA vx_xxxx_x_x
Freezing (with Titanium Backup) will keep them from running, and effectively hide them from the rest of your system. Otherwise, you may find a way to backup and uninstall them completely, but this is more risky if you're ever planning to take an OTA update in the future.

Mainly a update to KNOX.
Have to see if theres a modem update. If there is thats all thats important for me. And if they patched Loki.
Talked to ATT, app2sd, audio clipping issue with headphones fix, removed a wallpaper and added 2 back, and some msging fix. I think there was a few other things as well, he said a security patch as well, but no real information on what.

Well, plenty of warning has been given about waiting to apply this update until it is cleared as safe, so if anyone decides to ignore the warnings, too bad. If it's safe, it'll be known soon enough. I'm just wondering how many other threads will be made about it...anyone taking bets?
