Ok so im planning on rooting my gs3 as i do with all of my phones. However im am very confused on this imei thing. Now that the bootloader is unlockable does the imei need to be backed up? And if i dont back it up what happens? This is just very confusing as ive never had this issue with any other phones. Thank for the community help.

When flashing Roms (mostly AOSP) there is a small chance you will lose your IMEI. It's nice to back it up so you won't have to hassle later trying to get it back. Always back up things when you flash because even though you do everything right, things can go wrong.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
Yeah back it up using QPST. I found it over at rootzwiki. The bootloader doesn't have to do with that. It's very sporadic it seems for people losing IMEI.
If you don't back it up and you lose it, you won't have data or basically a connection to Verizon. There is a way to restore it if you didn't back up but it leaves you in roaming. Backing up using QPST is very easy, do it!

Check out the new backup method thats a flashable .zip in cwm recovery.

SynergyROM has incorporated the flashable backup into their build. I can't confirm that it's working as my IMEI has remained intact, but the backup folder was created and populated during my last install.
I'll second synergy thread as well. Great info from eschalon and TrevE.
I also did qpst backup as well. Doesn't hurt to be cautious.

Hello,
I was just curious, if I do a nandroid backup of my phone before I load a rom, could I then restore from that backup later if I was unhappy with the rom? These roms look so tempting, but I need my phone for business stuff as well, so im tentative to not be able to go back to the (mostly) functioning stock image.
Thanks,
Andy

Thanks for the clarification, I figured that it would, I just wasn't positive on it.
I think I know what I'm doing for the rest of the day
Being that the Skyrocket is my first android-based phone, i'm still fairly new to this. Currently, I have NexusMod4 running on my phone. Say I wanted to flash a different rom or even the ICS leak etc.. what would be the best way to do this? Do I just go ahead and flash it or do I have to uninstall the current or anything like that? Also, what should be backed up? Everything? Lol. Apps can be backed up and restored via Titanium Backup, correct? Help a noob out.
hi there, can you just advise on this: when you flash a ROM do you lose all of your phones UI ( TW on Samsung phones for example).
thanks in advance
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
ok guys
One. Search is your friend it would have answered your questions so please in the future try to do so
Two. When installing a new rom its like installing a different version of windows so when you do your wipes its like formatting a hard drive so yes you loose all of the old data including whatever ui was on the old rom.
Three. Backups are important many make a full one of the stock setup and archive it somewhere safe for those oh **** moments lol and many like to flip between roms by backing up their favs and restoring them as their fancy is stricken.
Four. Yes tibu is good for backing up apps me personally I use system tuner pro for this purpose among many others. Hope this helps out

I have this same problem, but it happened to me after I had lost my IMEI and then manually injected it myself. I've ready tried reprovisioning about 3 times, but to no avail. Idk if our problem is caused by the same thing or not, but it is extremely bothersome, isn't it? I wish some genius could help us

I didn't do anything with the IMEI except back it up using the terminal emulator and the "reboot nvbackup" command. Not even sure if it did anything or not. How do you reprovision the phone? What does that even [claim to] do? A google search shows a lot of people complaining about this. I hope someone comes along and helps too.

If you reprovision, it will wipe all your data and such. Idk if you wanna try it. I only tried it because someone suggested it, but it was pointless. So, if you were gonna try that, you would want to nandroid backup first. The way to reprovision if you're interested is dial *2767*3855# that'll do the trick for you. I hope someone comes along to help as well. After a while some fix usually comes around. Just gotta be patient sometimes

Interesting. I wonder what the reprovisioning actually does. I didn't flash CWM yet since I'm running the stock bootloader, and it is locked. I heard that unlocking the bootloader can cause trouble if an OTA update changes things on it.

I would suggest that you just download ROM Manager from the app store, open it up, and at the very top it will say flash clockwork mod recovery. Hit that and it should be a done deal. Let me know if you have any problems

About data/signal issue, that's not your IMEI. It more than likely is your sim card. I had to get 2 replacements from Verizon due to a weak signal. Another simple thing to try is to be sure data roaming is ON in the settings menu, and restart. That is known to work. Rooting prob did not cause this to happen, the S3 has signal issues to begin with. Do not start running scripts to attempt to fix without going through the verizon fixes first. Stay on stock rom, hide your root apps and bring in to get sim card. They won't check for root.
Plan B is to call *611 and speak to someone, they can push a signal code through to fix. Don't say your rooted!

Oh but we shall see what happens when I change towers. To compare, and diagnose this issue, how is your phone setup. Mine is as follows:
Purchased at: Small business authorized reseller
Contract: On contract
Purchase date: 9/5/12 (opened a new account, not adding a line)
OS/ROM: Stock 4.0.4
Rooted: Yes
Bootloader: Locked (had it unlocked temporarily to see if I could do it, but I relocked it to diagnose the data issue)
Recovery: CWM
ICS Encryption: Not turned on (I don't think I can use it now that I have CWM installed anyway)
Apps that run at boot: Call Recorder by Skvalex
Root apps installed: SuperUser (duh), Rom Manager, CallRecorder, Terminal Emulator (used it to execute "reboot nvbackup" as a supposed IMEI backup method)

So far all I've done is "reboot nvbackup" to supposedly backup my IMEI, but I have no idea if it did anything. I'll double check data roaming, but I don't want to rack up a roaming bill. Also I don't have to worry about my store finding out if I root. The sales guy helped me root it before I even paid for it.
The guy I dealt with helped with root questions for me too at actually vzw store... Funny! Sim should do the trick. And yes, that script you ran backed your IMEI correctly, so it's not that. Data roaming is to see if it improves issue, if it does, your having network issues that are not phone related. There is no reason to keep that option on unless your lost in the woods and need data!

Okay, I read on here every day on my cell and can't find the answer to my question. I, like alot of people have a stock, rooted, unlocked phone and want to update to the latest OTA. I would like to, if possible, do this without Odin.
I was wondering if they're was a file like Scott's stock Rom that could be dirty flashed over stock without any problems? If there is no other way, I plan on using Odin to get back to stock after I relock the bootloader, take the update, and then reroot, unlock, etc.
The big reason that I would rather do it without the computer is that I am on the road 90% of the time and don't have access to a computer. I depend on my phone for GPS as well as entertainment, so being without my phone isn't an option for me. Are there any options?

I am the same way and would like to do it without going completely back to locked/un-rooted/stock. I was able to find a ROM that Scott just updated with the new VRALG7 from verizon here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1892670
This will apparently update your phone to the new baseband and leave you stock/rooted.
Hope this helps!

Did you just wipe cache and dalvik cache or do a full wipe?
What I ended up doing was a full wipe and flashed CleanROM 2.5, which is based on the new VRLG7 updates. Then I flashed the new VRLG7 radio form here:
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/34053-of...zon-sgs3-sch-i535-odin-or-recovery-flashable/
Titanium backup took care of restoring all of my apps and settings.

Can I ask why you guys want the update anyway? I'm also on stock/rooted/unlocked and all I did was freeze the apps called 'sdm' and 'fwupgrade' and there's no chance for it to update to the OTA. I hear all it has is dumbed down search and a Verizon remote-help sort of thing.
It blocks a security issue and is different framework from what I understand. I would lock the bootloader, unroot, OTA, and then redo everything but will not be around a computer until tomorrow at the best.

After reading the posts on Scott's CleanROM 2.5, that's what I am going to do this weekend. I will feel a lot better knowing I received the most up-to-date software from Samsung as the framework and then customize my phone the way I want. Plus, that's what a lot of the more experienced posters have been recommending, and for a noob like me, it would be dumb for me to not take their advice.
Thanks for getting back to me about the cache wiping question!
