[Q] Flashing multiple roms. - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Being that the Skyrocket is my first android-based phone, i'm still fairly new to this. Currently, I have NexusMod4 running on my phone. Say I wanted to flash a different rom or even the ICS leak etc.. what would be the best way to do this? Do I just go ahead and flash it or do I have to uninstall the current or anything like that? Also, what should be backed up? Everything? Lol. Apps can be backed up and restored via Titanium Backup, correct? Help a noob out.

hi there, can you just advise on this: when you flash a ROM do you lose all of your phones UI ( TW on Samsung phones for example).
thanks in advance
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium

ok guys
One. Search is your friend it would have answered your questions so please in the future try to do so
Two. When installing a new rom its like installing a different version of windows so when you do your wipes its like formatting a hard drive so yes you loose all of the old data including whatever ui was on the old rom.
Three. Backups are important many make a full one of the stock setup and archive it somewhere safe for those oh **** moments lol and many like to flip between roms by backing up their favs and restoring them as their fancy is stricken.
Four. Yes tibu is good for backing up apps me personally I use system tuner pro for this purpose among many others. Hope this helps out

ROM Manager

Hey I was just browsing the market and decided to invest in Rom manager (used it religiously on my old Droid 1). Lo and behold we don't even have a cwm listed!
What needs to be done to have some of these roms I see on this board listed in that App?
Thanks and sorry for the noob question. (We need a Q and A board.)

You really should've looked a little as it's mentioned a billion times, BUT...
Just install CWM for the Galaxy S i9000, works perfect.

Would it be hard to add infuse to the cwm list in rom manager? So that way only infuse Rome would show up for people?

would have to work with Koush on that one. Don't see why not, we just need to get them separated... (Wouldn't be a bad idea seeing that really noobtastic people may pseudobrick their devices and need us to walk them through Odin restoral....)
I'm always one for lack of headaches. Keeps the real devs from having to field noob questions and pseudo-devs like myself with more free time to try and step up to full dev status....

You would want to check all 3 if it is your first flash, that way if something goes wrong you have a backup to restore, and the other two need to check because they are cache for your original rom, not the new one.
It's worth doing the backup of your stock setup.
Wiping the data isn't necessary unless you are a stickler about starting "fresh".
Dalvik cache wipe never hurts.

If you are coming from stock, you need to wipe all. It can cause issues, i have seen it. You get lots of force close, stuff that is removed from stock would still be there, which could also cause problems. Its better to do a full wipe when going from stock to a custom rom, and when switching custom roms.
I think I made a mistake, it reboot into recovery and I guess I was to wipe data and cache then reboot into cyanogen rom, but I did not wipe data and cache, Now it froze on me. What can I do, Did I just brick my phone?

Custom ROM for Xoom

I've taken a long, winding, occasionally interrupted road to rooting my Xoom 3G and by way of the "ROM Manager" app managed to get EOS 1.0 on there. It's clearly ICS and seems fairly stable, if not very stable. The problem with all of this is I never really felt like my brain was absorbing everything I was doing so I almost feel like I accidently rooted and flashed my Xoom, or watched myself do it. I'd like to flash more and better ROMs; I'd like to play around with different recoveries; I'd like to back my stuff up like a mature adult; I want to root my other devices; I want to do all these great things, but don't feel like I've really learned enough do anything. I don't even know if I could redo what I've already done without messing something up. Please, make me not dumb!
well first off always make a backup just incase.... but since youve got a custom rom installed , installing another rom is easy.
download the rom you want to flash boot into recovery , make a nandroid backup, then install the rom youve downloaded, id recommend eos's jb rom its awesome, pretty straight forward as youve done the hard part already,
other devices i cant comment as their all different for rooting and installing recovery etc, but once youve got recovery installed its same procedure for installing a rom, but always do plenty of reading and be sure what youre doing,

Thanks for the quick reply. More questions. What is nandroid and how do you back it up? Where do I find a complete list of Xoom ROMs (or at least the jb one you mentioned)? I always hear about CM -- have they done anything for Xoom? Do I need an sdcard anymore now that I'm rooted? What are some essential apps?

@wesamothman Thank you for the link. So I'm on the right track with eos. That jb update sounds very appealing, but which one should I grab for my US 3g Xoom?

I can't seem to get the url to work, but even if I find it -- I have a US 3G Xoom -- will it work, or will I have to stick to ICS until I upgrade to 4G?
Links seem OK, but yea, they are EU versions.
On that related thread, please ask if that ROM will work on your US device although I believe it will.

Confused!!?

Ok so im planning on rooting my gs3 as i do with all of my phones. However im am very confused on this imei thing. Now that the bootloader is unlockable does the imei need to be backed up? And if i dont back it up what happens? This is just very confusing as ive never had this issue with any other phones. Thank for the community help.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
When flashing Roms (mostly AOSP) there is a small chance you will lose your IMEI. It's nice to back it up so you won't have to hassle later trying to get it back. Always back up things when you flash because even though you do everything right, things can go wrong.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
Yeah back it up using QPST. I found it over at rootzwiki. The bootloader doesn't have to do with that. It's very sporadic it seems for people losing IMEI.
If you don't back it up and you lose it, you won't have data or basically a connection to Verizon. There is a way to restore it if you didn't back up but it leaves you in roaming. Backing up using QPST is very easy, do it!

SynergyROM has incorporated the flashable backup into their build. I can't confirm that it's working as my IMEI has remained intact, but the backup folder was created and populated during my last install.
I'll second synergy thread as well. Great info from eschalon and TrevE.
I also did qpst backup as well. Doesn't hurt to be cautious.

[Q] Bloatware 4.1.1

I figured this question would have been asked a bunch of times already...I was wondering if anyone had a Verizon and Samsung bloatware list that is safe for freeze/removal on Android 4.1.1? I've been searching for a while but I couldn't find an updated list for the i535. Thanks!
I can make you a list if you would like.
Do you mind telling me what ROM you are using? Most of the ROMs include different bloatware. Unless you are using the stock Rom?

Thanks for that link! What about the Verizon bloatware? I mean the apps are pretty self explanatory but what about the other programs that are associated with them and run in the background...if that makes sense. Do you need a screen shot of the Verizon apps?
Thanks for posting the list.
I went through and disabled the apps I knew I was not going to use and now my phone seems to run a bit faster.

[Q] What should i choose? PA or stay on CM?

Hi! I'm new here, but i am a bit experienced in stuff...
Anyway, when i got my Tab 2 7.0, i did flash it to Cyanogen. Now, i am on RC2
Now, i am stuck on a question: "Should i get ParanoidAndroid 3+ or stay on CyanogenMod?"
I *can't* find any clear opinions, bug list, installation instructions or kernels... ( I know what is Factory Reset, but "Wipe Everything"? )
So i ask your help, guys. ParanoidAndroid seems an A+++ rom for me, as i like costumization. No, do not ask me to get Xposed, it's already hard as it is for me.
So thanks guys!
Full wipe just means clear the caches in clockworkmod
There is data and dalvik and no... it will not delete your personal files but yes installing paranoid will delete your apps

They also recommend formatting the internal sdcard, which i sometimes do, because it is easy to end up with multiple 0 directories, factory reset skips formating data/media.

Send from invader Zim's spaceship.
search on internet for Rom called jelly bam its awesome and its a combine pac Rom.
it uses latest cyanogenmod build and have paranoid android incorporated.
it will be best for u .i think so
I flashed paranoidandroid on my Tab2-p3100 but i had problem with the mic, which was not working at all.
I never flashed cyanogenmod on my tab (may be I am afraid of the term "nightly" makes it seem very unstable, you know!, though, they say they are as stable as they come).
Now there is this PAC-ROM , claims to have all-in-one features of all the roms together, i flashed it as well, it was also a good rom to test, but there were some bugs in it (you can refer to the thread), now I am using Adishakti's Dark-Fantasy-2 rom, which is a modded paranoidandroid+AOSP+ maybe caynogenmod ROM but it is really very good and stable, least of glitches i noticed elsewhere

That would be my opinion about it.

DarkFantasy is PAC ROM with Sony launcher and some eye/ear candy.
Please, I beg you, try cyanogenmod. If your uncomfortable tyr the cyanogenmod RC 2. It is the most stable ROM I have used. I have used to for almost 3 months now. Since I am a flashaholic i flash other ROM's often but i find cyanogenmod the best and I always go back to it.

I agree, also. I think it is funny how people go crazy over ROMs which are just other roms modified to the makers preferences. Not to say the makers do not deserve credit for their hard work, but why not take a good ROM and mod it to your own liking. Just an opinion.

Wow, so many comments on my "2cents"
Maybe my comment was perceived as "noob rant"
I had some experience with cyanogenmod in the past with some older phones (gingerbread ones) and definitely i was hooked to it then. But like I said, I was just afraid to try it on my Tab because of that dreadful suffix to it, and Luigi, your comment has really moved me
I am a member at cyanogenmod forum for last 2 years by the same name and I think on this forum too by the same name.
I actually had nothing much to post on xda previously because almost everything I wanted to know was already posted and i used this forum's knowledge to flash friends' phones mostly and had no experience of anything i used so nothing to post, but, since I now own a Galaxy tab P3100 and most of the time I am reading this section about the tab, I just wanted to share what i thought appropriate, that's all.
Thanks for pointing out that the rom I was talking about is a modded PAC-ROM, and I think what one flashes and uses is a matter of personal choice, i just shared my opinion as i think the OP asked for that.
Thanks for the comments

Actually I had a huge backup of applications but I happen to read the SGT2 cyanogenmod nightly thread and right there in the first or second post users are warned against using titanium backup to restore apps. And I thaought, what the hell, maybe I need to wipe Internal memory clean from time to time so why not now.
Somewhere in the forum a new app backup software is suggested, "helium backup"! Any experience with that?
So now we are going way off topic
Back to the topic, after using the new ROM whole night (seriously I was on a night shift!), I found out it to be lot better than someone else's modded version, I used "PimpMyRom" to my heart's content!!!!!

Yes, I used pimpmyrom to add bravia2 engine, the sound tweaks, gps mod for better GPS lock, except for the quality of video, all other things improved as expected. I could not notice difference in video quality.
Gprs was also improved, no 3g where I live.
