Okay, I read on here every day on my cell and can't find the answer to my question. I, like alot of people have a stock, rooted, unlocked phone and want to update to the latest OTA. I would like to, if possible, do this without Odin.
I was wondering if they're was a file like Scott's stock Rom that could be dirty flashed over stock without any problems? If there is no other way, I plan on using Odin to get back to stock after I relock the bootloader, take the update, and then reroot, unlock, etc.
The big reason that I would rather do it without the computer is that I am on the road 90% of the time and don't have access to a computer. I depend on my phone for GPS as well as entertainment, so being without my phone isn't an option for me. Are there any options?

I am the same way and would like to do it without going completely back to locked/un-rooted/stock. I was able to find a ROM that Scott just updated with the new VRALG7 from verizon here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1892670
This will apparently update your phone to the new baseband and leave you stock/rooted.
Hope this helps!
Yeah I read that, but there are some bugs. I wonder if anyone has tried a dirty flash?

Did you just wipe cache and dalvik cache or do a full wipe?
What I ended up doing was a full wipe and flashed CleanROM 2.5, which is based on the new VRLG7 updates. Then I flashed the new VRLG7 radio form here:
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/34053-of...zon-sgs3-sch-i535-odin-or-recovery-flashable/
Titanium backup took care of restoring all of my apps and settings.
I am curious about this as well. I sent him a PM and will let you know if he replies.

You just want to make sure you don't accidentally lock your bootloader and reboot since you will get the Verizon unauthorized software message which is also fixable but..

Okay, I purchased mobile Odin pro, what is the way that I need to do it? I have not seen a guide for that application. Also, will I lose everything on the phone and have to restore everything if I do it this way?
EDIT: I think I can probably wing mobile Odin, I can't find the new image file to flash. Does anyone know where to find it? I looked on Samsung updates . Com and couldn't find it.

Can I ask why you guys want the update anyway? I'm also on stock/rooted/unlocked and all I did was freeze the apps called 'sdm' and 'fwupgrade' and there's no chance for it to update to the OTA. I hear all it has is dumbed down search and a Verizon remote-help sort of thing.
It blocks a security issue and is different framework from what I understand. I would lock the bootloader, unroot, OTA, and then redo everything but will not be around a computer until tomorrow at the best.

After reading the posts on Scott's CleanROM 2.5, that's what I am going to do this weekend. I will feel a lot better knowing I received the most up-to-date software from Samsung as the framework and then customize my phone the way I want. Plus, that's what a lot of the more experienced posters have been recommending, and for a noob like me, it would be dumb for me to not take their advice.
Thanks for getting back to me about the cache wiping question!
No worries, good luck!

I didn't do anything with the IMEI except back it up using the terminal emulator and the "reboot nvbackup" command. Not even sure if it did anything or not. How do you reprovision the phone? What does that even [claim to] do? A google search shows a lot of people complaining about this. I hope someone comes along and helps too.

If you reprovision, it will wipe all your data and such. Idk if you wanna try it. I only tried it because someone suggested it, but it was pointless. So, if you were gonna try that, you would want to nandroid backup first. The way to reprovision if you're interested is dial *2767*3855# that'll do the trick for you. Interesting. I wonder what the reprovisioning actually does. I didn't flash CWM yet since I'm running the stock bootloader, and it is locked. I heard that unlocking the bootloader can cause trouble if an OTA update changes things on it.

I would suggest that you just download ROM Manager from the app store, open it up, and at the very top it will say flash clockwork mod recovery. Hit that and it should be a done deal. Let me know if you have any problems

About data/signal issue, that's not your IMEI. It more than likely is your sim card. I had to get 2 replacements from Verizon due to a weak signal. Another simple thing to try is to be sure data roaming is ON in the settings menu, and restart. That is known to work. Rooting prob did not cause this to happen, the S3 has signal issues to begin with. Do not start running scripts to attempt to fix without going through the verizon fixes first. Stay on stock rom, hide your root apps and bring in to get sim card. They won't check for root.
Plan B is to call *611 and speak to someone, they can push a signal code through to fix. Don't say your rooted!

Oh but we shall see what happens when I change towers. To compare, and diagnose this issue, how is your phone setup. Mine is as follows:
Purchased at: Small business authorized reseller
Contract: On contract
Purchase date: 9/5/12 (opened a new account, not adding a line)
OS/ROM: Stock 4.0.4
Rooted: Yes
Bootloader: Locked (had it unlocked temporarily to see if I could do it, but I relocked it to diagnose the data issue)
Recovery: CWM
ICS Encryption: Not turned on (I don't think I can use it now that I have CWM installed anyway)
Apps that run at boot: Call Recorder by Skvalex
Root apps installed: SuperUser (duh), Rom Manager, CallRecorder, Terminal Emulator (used it to execute "reboot nvbackup" as a supposed IMEI backup method)

So far all I've done is "reboot nvbackup" to supposedly backup my IMEI, but I have no idea if it did anything. I'll double check data roaming, but I don't want to rack up a roaming bill. Also I don't have to worry about my store finding out if I root. The sales guy helped me root it before I even paid for it.
The guy I dealt with helped with root questions for me too at actually vzw store... Funny! Sim should do the trick. And yes, that script you ran backed your IMEI correctly, so it's not that. Data roaming is to see if it improves issue, if it does, your having network issues that are not phone related. There is no reason to keep that option on unless your lost in the woods and need data!

I have to disagree, this will not help. Color Green is trying to check for OTA's via Settings/About Phone/Software Update
Color Green, why are you trying to do a software update on a custom rom? Scrosler (CleanRom dev) removed the file that allows you to check for Verizon OTA's. Pretty much every dev does something similar. This happens on purpose so you do not receive constant OTA prompts. If you want a software update, Odin to stock and accept them. No custom rom will allow you to successfully update via OTA.

Ahh ok. The file that was removed is "sdm1.0" and there's possibly another file as well. Even if that file was present and you were able to "receive" an OTA prompt, it would fail because you have a custom recovery installed. That same custom recovery you used to flash CleanRom is the same one preventing Verizon OTA's from automatically installing.

Never ever OTA on a custom ROM.
Just like previous guy said, if you want to OTA you need to Odin back to stock. There a guide in the development section called "how to root and more" or something. Follow section 6 of that guide to Odin. It's a very simple process. I'm pretty sure you lose root, boot loader gets locked and your custom recovery goes away.

yeah....you'll have to wait for the dev to cook in the 4.2 upgrades......the first ones to ever get the upgrades implemented is AOSP/AOKP roms because they're essentially barebones android, but with some added tweaks
in the case of the jump from 4.1.1/4.1.2 to 4.2, not much is being added except for the new camera with fully functioning libs, fully upgraded gapps, a new 4.2 keyboard w/ gesture typing, and a few other things as well as polishing up things that are already present that needed polishing from 4.1.1
Hello all,
I have a couple questions regarding rooting my phone
i have a fully stock vrz sgs3 and the only thing ive done to it is loaded a different launcher (nova prime). i want to root my phone so that i can backup everything ive downloaded onto it (contacts, pictures, but most importantly EVERY app ive downloaded) and also slap a rom on there for some unique customizations (was thinking CM10).
I suppose my first question would be, in the process of rooting my phone, will it wipe any/all data and leave the phone like it was when i first open the box?
and if it doesn't, will i be able to backup everything with a backup app (and also which one would be highest on people's lists) before i start getting that rom on there and going nuts making my phone my own?
thank you very much for everyones time and help with this!
happy new year!
slainte!
If you use the one click root method(http://droidmodderx.com/galaxys3/?page_id=159) which by the way is way easier and faster than Odin, you won't lose any of your data, afterwards you will download Titanium backup to backup all of your apps, I'm not sure if there's another app out there but trust me this is the one EVERYONE uses and the best one. Then download EZ-recovery(from the app store) and install the custom recovery CWM using the app itself and download EZ-unlock 1.2 (http://rootzwiki.com/topic/32456-app-920-ez-unlock-14-easiest-way-to-unlock-your-bootloader/) since 1.4 is buggy, and press unlock to unlock the bootloader and then you can flash all the ROMs you want. You MUST have the bootloader unlock to flash custom ROMs/kernels and remember to always factory reset/wipe cache and dalvik and format system when flashing and don't ever flash a ROM from another carrier because it will brick your device.
Good luck.
I'm guessing you are on JB OTA right?

If so here is the only method to root it http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=35418324
You woo not lose your data doing it. Also, as a friendly tip download triangle away because this root method will trip your flash counter. Also, I HIGHLY recommend not downloading or following guides from other sites besides here and root, and maybe a select other few. Seen way to many bricks by following random guides.

Make sure you follow the root guide according to what software you are running. The ICS method does not work for Jellybean. Rooting will not wipe your data but flashing a ROM will. Just do a Nandroid backup in clock work mod (CWM) thats backs up your data with your ROM as well. You can download Titanium Backup to back up your apps. Sms backup will back up your txts and call logs.

Well put couldn't have said it better,
I would not jump right into an ASOP like CM10 for my first flash, you might want to start with a TouchWiz based rom like Clean rom first. AOSP roms in general take a few more steps to install and still have some occasional issues (data drops, getting stuck in roaming, and loosing IMEI (no data) any of which could lead to a day of anxiety and localized baldness (hair pulling)
I hope you know what your getting into.....You will never be satisfied with a stock rom again

do i select "no" or "yes, disable recovery flash"?
i would prefer not to wipe any data so im guessing i select "yes..."
thanks again
Select yes or you will have to redo everything

Question
What is the difference between using the EZ-Bootloader or using Goomanager for TWRP?
I am not a fan of using apps just for the sake of it and having 3 of the same on my phone. I have seen people use Goomanager for TWRP, EZ-Bootloader and Rom Manager. All I want is one...so is there an advantage or disadvantage to using TWRP and uninstalling EZ-Boatloader?

EZ-Recovery has the the old TWRP preloaded last I saw but can load latest on sd card and use the app to install it. Goo Manager downloads the latest TWRP directly and installs. Rom Manager is for CWM.

Then like I said earlier, those one clicks do not work on jb. You need to follow the guide I posted. That's why it's not working.

Mr. Robinsons Route 66 K3 version works fine also. Just unlock bootloader before recovery flash.

Hey all,
Tried to post this in the beans thread but I apparently do not have enough posts, I usually lurk rather than post so I guess I'll have to change that.
I've been an avid flasher for a while and made the switch to beans with build 13, about a week before build 14 came out. I usually do a full wipe when installing a ROM, but it's a bit of a pain setting up various authenticators again.
I'm pretty sure if I OTA to build 15 that I won't have to set up everything again, but I'm worried that dirty flashing that way will cause issues.
Does anyone have any advice? I pretty much use this as my primary phone and don't want to put it out of commission by doing anything wrong.
Thanks.

I always clean flash, because beans says so in the op.

Back up your apps and sms messages and do a dirty flash. If you have any problems do a clean install. A dirty flash wont brick your phone.

So it does, why have the OTA update at all if a wipe and install is recommended then?

Devs usually recommend a full wipe and flash. Having the OTA notification is a way to inform you there's a new build out.

Ah, that makes sense.
So anyway, I use Titanium Backup but despite following directions online, I always have to redo my authenticators, right now everything I'm using works off of the Google Authenticator app.
Is there a way for me to keep all the authentication information on the phone between flashes? Last time I went from CleanROM to Beans, it didn't work so well.

Scroslers is the most stock you're going to get. It's a good option, but he should look through all of them. They're all fantastic roms.

Ok thanks. Looking at these great roms makes me consider going back to tw.

That I don't know, I haven't tested any of them.
They should be included in the main page description or I would search each thread individually for an answer to that.

Why is it when I try to install certain custom roms I get no connection on my play store? I am on 4.1.2 mf1 I have tried resetting my time clearing cache etc.

No idea.
It's probably an issue with your Google account. I would try erasing it completely and re-adding it. You could also try flashing a custom playstore or installing a different one to see if you can fix the problem.
It isn't rom related.

I tried that it still wiil not work. I also odin back to stock reroot and unlock and still no go. I understand it is not rom related was just wondering if anyone else had this problem.

It was mentioned a long time ago, I'd search the q&a section. There are a few threads directly related to that issue.

I have and tried everything that was mentioned. It has something to do with gapps. I never had this problem before.

I really did search about this problem. I do not just ask questions because I am too lazy to search and read. Lol btw I appreciate this list. Looks good csnt wait to try some of these once I get my gapps working.

Did you find one that does? I've just traded for a gs3 that already had taken the 4.3 OTA. I did get root using Saferoot but I can't get wireless tether app to work. I've searched for 3 days and can't find how to make it work. TIA

yeah bro. foxfi wireless tether works.
there is a free version and a paid version though.
there are 2 annoying things.
1 it's not free
2 it forces you to "lock" your phone with a password/pattern/or pin number.
So are any AOSP roms supported with safestrap? I'm looking at the download list and it's just modified TW roms.
My brother took the OTA, but is now interested in switching to AOSP and I wanted to make sure it was even possible.

If you read the description it tells of a way to keep certificate without the lock protection. I can verify that it works.
