Soft-Bricking Phone Each Time I Flash - Samsung Infuse 4G

AT&T replaced my Infuse (which I was running JB and before that ICS), so I have a brand new phone.
Came stock with G 2.3.6.
I was able to flash jscott30 2.3.6 Gingerbread with root and CWM recovery option - link below. I chose option C. Phone is running great.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1613523
However, when I try to upgrade to a custom ICS or JB rom (doesn't matter which one) from CWM, the phone soft-bricks - meaning when it resets it's either stuck in Samsung boot loop or that crashed recovery loop.
I have to reflash in download mode to the link above, which thankfully works!
Bottom line - I can't flash any ICS or JB and can't figure out what the deal is. I had no problems flashing before with my old Infuse.
I'm clearly doing something wrong - any ideas? I know I'm not providing a lot of info, but I'm following each flash instruction to the letter (in each OP).
Thanks for any insight!
I don't want to wait for Samsung to upgrade to ICS - if they ever do.

I know it might be a dumb awnser/reply. But did u happen to pull battery out and reflash after it froze? Sometimes that helps. If u have there is nothing wrong from starting back from the start.. cm9 I use for my ICS boot loaderz and then I try whatever else I want. But I always start from. Ginger bread to entropy cm9

Yes, I've tried many different ROMs. Each fails. So weird.

Which CWM do you have. I know that after I flashed the rooted GB version, I then flashed the Heimdall ICS recovery and CWM went to blue version. Then very easy to install ROMs.

There shouldn't be any need to manually install CWM, as the ROM zips have the udated CWM built into them. Since you're coming from GB, the first reboot after installing ICS or JB, should boot you into the new BLUE CWM, after which you may need to format System, and flash again. Also, have you removed your External SD card before flashing? That's caused problems for some people.

My concern is that he said he flashed ICS but still has red CWM. I suggested Heimdall ICS recovery to get him to blue. I am relatively new but that is what I had to do to get ICS on the phone. But I am sure that there are other methods too.

Yep - did the Heimdall and it pushed me to blue CWM. I'm good now!
Just flashed ParanoidAndroid ICS and it's working.
thanks!

Odd. Never ran into that issue yet, and, as such, didn't notice that there was a Heimdall ICS one-click kernel floating about. Great advice.

[Q] How to get Red CWM

I was running Infused 2.2.3 for the longest time and when I always went into recovery it was red.
Well, I was switching roms and got a hiccup in the install and had to revert back to stock using odin and gtg unbrick.
Once I was back to stock froyo, I rooted, replaced the recovery.bin file with the no sig file and then went into rom manager and got cwm, rebooted, reinstalled packages, etc...
Well I have cwm, but when I get into it, its green lettering...not red.
Only reason I ask is because just about everywhere I see, they say get into red.
Any ideas on how I can get red installed?
thanks

When in cwm, choose to install zip from SD card and go all the way to bottom and select "update.zip" and if it doesn't reboot, select reboot now and it should boot into Red CWM. That might do it i think

Flash Entropy's daily driver kernel. You'll get red CWM and voodoo lagfix. Great kernel by the way.

thanks, I will prob have a rom with a stock kernel...if thats the case, can I flash entropys kernel (which is my choice one on custom roms) through odin in the pda slot?
thanks for the help.
I will only want to flash a custom kernel to get root, then back to stock because the rom I will be running is based on one of the newer leaks, and I want video.

Well you need to have a kernel with voodoo enabled like Entropy's or you can't get red cwm. The stock leaks HAVE to have a stock kernel for video to work however. Oh, and yes you can. You can do that or through SGS Kernel Flasher on the market. What do you need red for anyway?

[Q] Stuck on "Performing factory data reset"

I removed the ICS build and use ODIN to return back to stock build.
Still having some problem so i did a data reset. It keep getting stuck there and i already done it three times.
Any suggestions?
So you flashed GB stock.tar through Odin? Do you mean factory/data reset in clockwork recovery? Flashing back to stock should take away your root so you would have to flash CWM again, make a nandroid backup, and flash superuser zip again.
What problems where you having before and after the ICS build?
Explain a bit further exactly what you did.
I installed STOCK Tar using ODIN.
It is booting up fine except i keep getting errors like "android.process.acore" has stopped unexpectedly. Most of the android apps is not working, like phone, contacts, calendars, etc.
I try to do a factory reset and it keep stopping halfway and hangs.
Your going to have to flash the kj2 modem. I had the same problem. I saw that the ucalc4 was still there, its on its own partition so it doesn't get changed when you flash stock tar. What I did...
1. Flash cwm in Odin
2. Boot into cwm (do backup)
3. Flash kj2 modem (I did it twice)
4. Reboot
5. Check baseband (should be uckj2)
This made the FC's go away. It seemed to me that the stock tar doesn't like that baseband, I can't explain why though. Didn't make sense to me but I fixed it. Also I found the ICS leak doesn't like stock recovery. Fyi

Little bit lost here.
I already flash it twice using ODIN and using the uckj2 build.

Build is one thing, baseband is different. When you flash stock your build will be uckj2, you say your on it. OK good. Now check your baseband, will probably still be the ICS baseband ucalc4, that is your modem. You need to flash the uckj2 modem in cwm. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20157930
Once you flash that your baseband will be uckj2. That should fix your fc's. Did for me. If not, you may need to try something else which I will explain if need be that will clean things up.

OK. What you need to do then is clean things up. There are two ways that I use but I prefer #1.
1. Flash darkside superwipe in cwm. Do a battery pull. Go into Odin and flash k0nanes tar.
OR
2. Flash stock recovery. Wipe data/factory reset. Do a battery pull. Go into Odin and flash k0nanes tar.

Am I right ?

Ok ,my girlfriend bought a new infuse and now she wants a custom ROM preferably ics on it ! It's on 2.2.1 ATM so I read around n as far as I could find out here is what I need to do :
1. Use Odin stock GB package to flash stock GB, I found a thread but it says it had no bootloaders. This is the confusing part shouldn't the Odin have GB bootloaders ?
2. Once I m on GB bootloaders if I don't have root n cwm I flash a kernel to get those
3.then I flash a ROM as per instructions in OP
Am I right ? O am I missing something? Also would be a great help if someone would tell me which is the safest method to get GB bootloaders on infuse ? Thanks a lot in advance
Sent from my SGH-I897 aka Captivate running on ICS using the awesome XDA app !
No, not really any of that is necessary. Root the phone on 2.2.1, install CWM via ROM manager (found in Google play), download and install Cyanogenmod 7 (found at cyanogenmod.com) on her phone (no matter what version, just v7), then flash an ICS ROM the same way as the Cyanogenmod 7 ROM, no other stuff.
ROM install instructions:
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache
Wipe dalvik cache
Install (Gapps if required)
Reboot

Don't take his word for it, as I don't think he even has an Infuse. Cyanogen doesn't officially support the Infuse at the moment, so you won't find a CM7 rom there for the Infuse. Since you are still on 2.2 and have root, you can use Rom Manager from the Play Store to install recovery. You'll note that there isn't a choice for the Infuse in the device list. Choose Galaxy S i9000, and that recovery will work for the Infuse (Don't try to use i9000 roms on the Infuse, though, because they won't work without being properly ported.). Once you get CWM recovery, choose your rom from the Infuse development section here, and follow the instructions there for installation. We also don't advise using Rom Manager for much else, as some have had issues on the Infuse. It's best to do nandroid backups, rom flashes, etc. directly in CWM recovery on this device.
By the way, the previous poster has a Galaxy S i9000, and his instructions for flashing an ICS rom aren't correct for our device either. Be sure to follow the instructions found in any of the rom threads here once you get CWM recovery.
All that said, since you mentioned Odin, you could also just flash Option C with Odin from HERE, and you'll have AT&T Gingerbread with root, CWM recovery, and a bunch of other goodies. This is a good base from which to flash any other rom you'll find in the dev section.
You also asked about bootloaders for Gingerbread. If you take issue with seeing rainbow artifacts in recovery and in the boot animation (the only issue that you will have without them), then you will need to flash them separately. We don't include them in Odin packages, because a failed bootloader install is really just about the only way you can hard brick an Infuse. If you can sucessfully flash other items in Odin, and are on Gingerbread or ICS, download and extract THIS package, and flash the tar.md5 in Odin. In seconds, you'll have the bootloaders, and will never need to flash them again.

Thanks a ton for the elaborate detail I.would try the Odin method as I an very comfortable with it but I've last question since u said that those packages don't have bootloaders , when I flash those Odin packages I will have GB on the phone but no GB bootloaders ? U mean I will run a GB ROM on froyo bootloaders? It's that even possible? I ask this because on captivate when I moved from froyo to GB we flashed Odin along with bootloaders so I had a GB ROM with GB bootloaders in fact other we were asked to first flash GB bootloaders n then flash a ROM ! And if that it's possible then all I have to do is just Odin that GB package without the bootloaders and then flash the bootloaders once and for all, right? Yes, you can have and run Gingerbread on the phone without GB bootloaders. The only side effect will be that you will see rainbow distortion in recovery and during the boot animation. Other than that, on the Infuse, Gingerbread runs fine on Froyo bootloaders. So, you are right. Odin the GB package without the bootloaders, and when that's done flash the bootloaders. You won't have to flash the bootloaders again as they can't be downgraded. Froyo runs fine on the upgraded bootloaders, too, by the way.
Oh sweet ! Thanks a ton will flash it now , she has been eating my head to get rid of the at n t bloatware finally I will get her phone on ics thanks a ton for pointing me in the right direction and bearing with my noobish questions ! Thanks to everyone

If you have no rainbows or glitches, then the bootloaders that are on the phone are fine. If you are using Aeon 1.4, and don't have any glitches in recovery, then it is safe to assume that you most likely have the GB bootloaders. Some kernels have workarounds for the rainbow artifacts, so if you flash something later and find that you have rainbow distortion, you can always flash bootloaders at that time. For now, if all is good, then there is no need to worry about bootloaders. To answer your question, though, the best way to know is to check recovery and boot animation. If there is no distortion, and everything boots properly, then you have the proper bootloaders for your setup.

Yeah, those issues aren't related to your bootloaders. You'll want to try different USB ports, another cable, uninstall and reinstall your Samsung USB drivers (and your Heimdall libusb driver for one specific USB port), etc. But, the bootloaders aren't to blame for your issues there.
Ye i tried. I'm on ubuntu so heimdall is my choice. Usb could be board problem. So willing to play safe so that i wont got in situation where i need heimdall i know my chance is slim for ics considering the issue that may occur.

If you are that anxious to flash ICS, you can do it without the bootloaders.. you will just have the rainbows with which you can live for a while.
Then later when you get a chance of using Windows, use Odin to flash them.

Codename Android 2.0 stuck in win recovery

I used the CWM to install CNA b4.zip, the Codename Android package.
Now all my phone does is boot into a menu that says:
install wipe
backup restore
mount settings
advanced reboot
How do I get into ICS?

sounds like he lost root. You will probably need to use heimdall one click to get back to kj6. Use the one I packaged that can be found here.

Then flash to ICS and then to the rom you want.
I had this happen to me when I tried to flash CNA b4. No matter what I did I could not get out of recovery when trying to flash. I thought for sure I would have to go back to stock but I just fully wiped and reinstalled AOKP with no problems. It may have been a bad download or something but I had that issue as well.

CMW??

Hey guys i just got my old old s 4G back and i want to get 4.3 or 4.4 on it and i just rooted it with kingo and it worked but i need to install a recovery, so how can i get cwm 5 on this I've looked just to much info scattered thanks!
[Heimdall][One-Click] The T959V Heimdall One-Click Collection is probably a good place for an experienced user to start.
On top of the fact that you need cwmr 6.0.4.x to flash 4.4... Which I don't think is available on SGS4G right now anyways.

But you wrote all the updater scripts that allow our phone to flash the MTD kernel first then reboot into that kernel and flash the ROM tho . #youdaman #bryan
@OP: So after a one click back to BML (which has CWM 5.x) and JB/KK is on ur way to flash

That's correct! Nothing will stop you from oneclick back to stock and flash JB/KK.
On reboot, the cwm updater will (should) do the right thing.
Although, I did not write the scripts for JB/KK. So, don't blame me for those that don't work (yet)
