Does anyone know how to get an open NAT with Android WIFI Tether? I am using my Galaxy S3 to play on XBOX LIVE and it really sucks not having open NAT. Tons of problems.
What does ROUTING FIX and MSS clamping do? Will either of these help?
=/
bump =(
I've had the same problem forever. I always thought it was due to higher ping than WiFi. If you could find a tether app that supports upnp it might help. Or port forwarding, but I don't think that would help in this case. Don't know anything about route fixing and mss clamping. Let me know what u figure out
It's from the ports not being forwarded and upnp not being set up - (I think).
I just wish someone would find a way around this. It's frustrating...
bump! Would really appreciate some help on this one!

It is hard to help someone who makes no show of helping themselves. What have you tried? Have you listed your iptables when enabling the different toggles to see what is happening?
I'm not sure what you mean exactly. Thanks

You on Verizon? 3g or lte? I just got lte in my area and I've been meaning to see if it changed anything as far as nat goes. It was never a real big issue for me because Xbox had moderate nat, which meant I could still play with most. If it was strict I would've been more motivated. But like I said earlier I don't think you can enable upnp through Verizon network. You should be able to find app to port forward since that is on phones end. Actually upnp should be on phones end and not Verizon. So maybe you could figure something out. Again, let me know what you find

I personally haven't had any problem being slow or dropping. Coming from a nexus s where i had wireless tether for free and was flawless, wifi tether app is just as good in my experience so far. I use it almost every day. It was one of the reasons i was hesitant about changing phones so i was thrilled with how well it works.
so the question is how trackable is this tether? i know with the x2 i had to mod my radio card to do it right, is this any where near the same?
My handset (I'm in Scotland) came with wifi tether installed natively-no root. However, it was far from flawless; the connection dropped on a very regular basis. The fix was easy though-I installed foxfi and it has been perfect since. And, no-I have no connection with foxfi!
Working great here (rooted with native tether hack) with Transformer Prime. Connection solid.
I'm using it just fine. I changed my device type to a Galaxy Nexus within the app, and now I'm tethering to Androids too, not just iOS devices.

rooting a friends phone:
Try Open Garden or WiFi Tethering (root) apps from market.
You've conflated a couple questions here.
"Which ROMs have a built-in feature for WiFi tethering?"
Most, if not all, do.
"Given that T-Mobile generally prohibits tethering, is there a way that I can tether in a way that I am not blocked by T-Mobile?"
Yes, there are several ways that you can make the traffic appear as though it originated on your phone. Most, if not all, of these are applications, use of things like VPN or ssh tunneling, or configuration of your tethered clients. There are several approaches. Search is your friend on finding one that works for you and that you are comfortable with.

Yes that works or just go to settings>wireless and networks>tethering. No need for an app if its built in but if you want one there's plenty to choose from
Wifi tethering used to work no problem on my phone but T-Mobile very recently seems to have changed something where they can detect it - on ICS ROM's - and block it in the browser on your computer. It takes a few link clicks to get the blocked page.
For this - I have to switch to a google related user agent to not have wifi tethering blocked.

that's funny, i'm using aokp (latest team acid build), and i was just using wifi tethering with no problems at all. not to mention that i'm not even supposed to have it since i have the new plan "truly unlimited 4g." the problem i do have though is usb tethering. i gave my team members a log to see if its fixable the other day, but haven't heard anything yet. its no big deal to me unless i wanna use it to tether my pc when our dsl daily cap is reached (which is everyday, but "i" don't use the pc everyday). basically just gave em the log to try and help those who do want/need it.

It was new for me. And only through the browser. Still connects no problem but after several clicks it will pop up a T-Mobile page saying I don't have the tethering package. I am on Raver's ICS Audiophile.
I was tethering just fine on vacation last week, until I got a text message from T-mobile saying they were blocking it, and sure enough it quit working.
I gotta look into the user agent spoofing I guess... at least before my next trip.
(All three of the hotels I was in were changing $5-10 for internet!)
T-Mobile is on a roll!
Didn't actually think they were gonna give something for nothing did ya.
They know that with strategic planning...(lower the plan price and give you more data)....if they give a little....you'll want more,so now they can ask for more, and sleep soundly when they go to bed at night.
So mine got blocked too, took me a couple of hours last night but found a way around it using Bluetooth Open Garden and VPN combination. Back to free tethering....victory over TMobile!....for now at least.

So using just the VPN client still blocked you??
Yeah, but it's possible that was just because I was trying multiple solutions. I'll look at it again tonight and see if I can substitute the Bluetooth with WiFi and keep it working. I think it might be in my proxy settings....it was late and I was happy to just get access.

I thought with Google Chrome you have to have the Developers Tools open for that to persist. Is there a simple way to make it stick without having to have the developer tools window open? Thanks.
Edit: Ok, so tried the APN switch on Google chrome last night and it did work, while the developers tools window is open. Only issue was that some of the sites that my wife uses that have display issues on mobile web now have the same issue on the PC...I'm not talking about page layout, but specific links and options not displaying....the reason she still needs to use the PC in the first place. I can definitely recommend the APN fix to people being blocked by Tmobile as a quick simple fix as previously stated in this thread. It took a little longer to set up, but I'm sticking with the VPN for full functionality.
Regarding the wifi use with VPN; I haven't been able to get it to work yet, so sticking with the Bluetooth for now.

Hi. Need a little help here. I am a FIOS subscriber and I can watch a few select channels on my GS3(outside of my home network) thru the app. Problem is, they only allow the NFL Network to play on tablets outside of the house. I wanna trick the Fios Mobile app into thinking I'm on a tablet, so I can watch Thurs night football if I'm not home. I tried the app settings module to change the DPI, but it did not work. It changed the DPI for the app like it is supposed to , but I still can't get the NFL Network channel to show up. Do I have to uninstall the app and change the dpi of my whole phone, and then download it maybe? Dont want to try it yet before I get a little advice. Any help would be great. Thx

Thanks, I love my fios. Hope you can get it eventually. Anyways, Thanks but I already saw that post the other day. The xposed module trick didnt work for me. It changed the screen size to really tiny but still no NFL Network on my phone tho. I also tried the market helper module too. I wish I knew if it is the apk, when I download it from the playstore that installs it as a phone apk, or is the apk the same for phone or tablet and it looks for certain settings or something, to know whether it is a phone or tablet? Thanks for the reply tho. Guess I'll make a nandroid and really dig in and start messing with the build.prop or something. Thx again.
I live in a Verizon area with no FIOS as well and Suddenlink sucks. Yeah, all I can figure is maybe changing your build.prop to say you have a tablet. I don't really have more details but I am pretty sure there's 1 line that specifies the device.

My sister's family live in the countryside and ADSL there is extremely slow (0.5Mb.)
I tested my 3G speed there with my Nexus 5 and managed to get a speed of 7.5Mb, and thought that they may be able to use a cheap android phone in conjunction with a Moto G to act as a wireless hotspot for the home.
I know Three's One Plan allows tethering through a phone, but not through a 3G router, or MiFi.
Was wondering wether if it would be better to have a router connect to the Moto G's hotspot, and then for devices to connect to the router as it may send out a better wifi signal around the home?
Would be interested in other's thoughts.
Thanks
Doesn't work like that, the devices need to connect directly to the phone. I did this myself for over a year with a note 2 and it was dire, if one person is doing something even remotely demanding, you can forget about anyone else getting any pages loaded.

Hi, thank for your reply.
Was performance really that bad.
As I say, their current connection is dreadful so surely could only be better?
Also whats stopping using a router/wireless bridge connect with the Moto G as the hotspot, then the router/wirelessbridge being the point all devices connect to?
Im just interested in why... not being funny with you
Sorry for the slow reply, I didn't even check this thread (yup I'm a moron lol). I've never tried the method of using a bridge so I can't comment, as for the performance, it will certainly be better for a single person using it (or even a few if it's simple browsing/Facebook games/low res 360p YouTube etc), but if anyone tries HD streaming, or online gaming, or downloading a file, they will get a so-so experience and anyone else won't get a look in.

It should be fine with a router connected to the Moto G's hotspot as a client and eveything else in the house will connect to the router, will get ofcourse better coverage at the house and you can place the Moto G somewhere where it will pick best signal from the mobile network.

You've missed the point of my post. Whether all the devices in the house connect directly to the phone, or through a bridged router, nothing will change at all. It is simply adding an unnecessary link to the chain.

Not to be too much of a ****, but HLMGTFY (wifi tethering fcc) - first link: <from CNET, but I can't embed links yet>. But anyway, while the rulling dosen't say anything about Sprint, it does show how the wind blows. Although I wasn't trying to be too serious with that statement, that's the genesis of it.
So no one still uses TrevE's WIFI tether, or are there just too few that have root so far?

Well, I know it might not be common, but I did. The stuff in the Play Store mostly seems like a wrapper for the installed tether app.
Here's what I've done so far that is pertenant- obtained my device. installed and removed several free Play Store apps dealing with tethering via wifi, backed up then rooted my phone, changed settings to accept unauth sources for installs, then went to my standby and installed TrevE's wifi tether from apk. Similar to initial issues with the G4 and G3 it craps out, reported error says log generated, but no log available (maybe just a perms issue?). Googled around a bunch and searched around xda-devs with no direct help found. Decided to post on my favorite Android development forum for the first time since the G3 came out.
I haven't tried looking at the TrevE source yet, mainly due to lazyness and my inate hatred of duplicating others' good work. That is the plan for the weak - along with looking at the wifi-LTE aggregation issue - but I mainly wanted to know if others had gotten that far with wifi tethering before I started donating my time hacking together something that might have already been hacked.
Clear as mud?

As for the Tether, It doens't work with newer phones yet. I haven't seen any updates for a long time. If you can find another program that works it'll be cool. Else, just wait for a Rom with a native tether to be available.

Actually I did get Fabio's WiFi Tether Router working (thx went to musclehead84 for the first suggestion) on mine - somewhat. I still have an issue with it not completely unloading, and have to reboot the phone after I'm done with it, but haven't tried to tweak it yet either. Well worth the $2.5 IMO.
After re-finding TrevE's thread I came to the same conclusion as others - not in active development anymore. Too bad, I'm a real fan of lightweight apps that do what they claim and are free!
