Anyone know? This is a must for me, and I know on my Rezound we never quite got it working with password protection! I'll be on the Verizon version, but I don't think it should matter too much.

I personally haven't had any problem being slow or dropping. Coming from a nexus s where i had wireless tether for free and was flawless, wifi tether app is just as good in my experience so far. I use it almost every day. It was one of the reasons i was hesitant about changing phones so i was thrilled with how well it works.
so the question is how trackable is this tether? i know with the x2 i had to mod my radio card to do it right, is this any where near the same?
My handset (I'm in Scotland) came with wifi tether installed natively-no root. However, it was far from flawless; the connection dropped on a very regular basis. The fix was easy though-I installed foxfi and it has been perfect since. And, no-I have no connection with foxfi!
Working great here (rooted with native tether hack) with Transformer Prime. Connection solid.
I'm using it just fine. I changed my device type to a Galaxy Nexus within the app, and now I'm tethering to Androids too, not just iOS devices.

Hey guys,
Now that Verizon's Mobile Hotspot promotion is done, what are you using to tether with your rooted Droid Charge? I am trying to use Barnacle but it keeps giving me errors.
Thanks!

I currently don't tether, I was planning on using this; https://market.android.com/details?id=android.tether&feature=search_result
but whenever I search for it on my Charge I can't seem to find it on the market place, and clicking the direct link just gives me an error. Hope someone has found a good wireless tether, going away for the weekend and could really use one!

+1for OpenGarden. I have been using it on my Thunderbolt for a weeks now and haven't seen any issues.
I loaded Barnacle and rooted my phone last night, so far so good. But I am going to also try Open Garden to see it it meets my need (see my thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1158476 )
so just to clarify guys, if use this tethering program, it can help me save a few bucks comparedd to paing for verizon's optional tethering service? ;-)
I've tried both the tethering programs in this thread and neither are detected on my PSP/NDS, the app also doesn't ask or tell me the SSID or passphrase, anyone know a REAL wireless tethering app where you can make it act pretty much like a router..?

I have never found one, PSP/NDS probably have the same issue with connecting to Ad Hoc networks. I had to root tablet and edit a file to make it work with A500.
Open Garden seems to have a better pass through for speed, used Wireless Tether for quite some time with no issues.
I pay enough to Vz since I never go over 5G a month even with tethering I don't feel bad at all.

I posted this in two other threads but both got ignored.
As soon as I updated to the 2.3.5, tethering seems to be no longer supported. The option is there, but as soon as I activate the tether, 3G goes away. I have to turn off the tether, then manually switch mobile data off and on just for my 3G to come back.
Is this their way of getting people to finally pay for it?
Yes.. one of the features of the update was removing tether if you were not paying for it. No biggie though... you have a Nexus.. just unlock it and download one of the apps off the market.

I am a little confused why Google allowed sprint to do this. Whether you you use the tether or not and regardless of how easy it is to get it back it doesn't sit well with me that Sprint is calling the shots with this phone now. One of the major appeals of this phone is the pure Google experience, which is now the partial Google experience. I wonder if this had anything to do with the delay of the OTA, maybe sprint was holding out until google let them kill the tether? Anyways, it doesn't instill a great amount of confidence in google for this phone and future nexus devices. I still like the phone and there is nothing on sprint I would rather have, I'm just a little pissed at how they tucked this into an update that was much anticipated and stripped some of our "pure googleness".
I don't understand this...i dont pay anything extra for tether, and i can still tether on stock 2.3.5. Why are some people unable?
i just flashed the new KE5 radio(found in the ns4g dev section), and im not seeing any issues. still on 2.3.4 tho.. i dont see any reasons to update to 2.3.5 especially if this is a problem. i tether wayyyy too much.

So I have a two day new Nexus S and I did the manual update last night. Now when activating the mobile hotspot the 3g or 4g icons go away and it does not have connectivity anymore.
Now, I have read conflicting info about whether this is happening just to those who did the manual update and if you did OTA it still works. Can anyone confirm this?
If that is the case, then I need to return this one and get another and just be more patient next time to get the update officially OTA. =)
Not that I am tremendously worried about the tethering/hotspot being free, but I am uneasy that doing this manually may have screwed things up in as of yet other unknown ways. Like if I do pay for hotspot/tethering someday it might still not work right, etc.
Thanks!

Did you manually update or did you wait for it to be pushed to your phone? I'm stock and wasn't rooted and I manually updated and my tethering both usb and wifi hotspots are not working.
Also I notice in the kernel version that it's longer than when I was on 2.3.4 mine says 2.6.35.7-g3cc95e3 [email protected] #1
Is that normal?

Whats everyone using on their rooted Charges for this? I found PDA net to be ok but the connection is somewhat unstable. It runs great for 10 minutes then drops out. The actual cellular connection is fine, I live in the middle of a 4G sweet spot in a major city and the signal is through the roof.
I have yet to be able to get any WiFi Hotspot app to work, Android WiFi Tether and Barnacle. Both seem to have some sort of error in their logs but the app thinks it is broadcasting and working properly......but it's not, it's not actually broadcasting the SSID.....
So what actually works for everyone?
Try Open Garden(on the Market). It's pretty ****ing slow and only works for text-based sites. Sites with flash/videos are going to take a while to load. I'm still looking for an app that actually uses the 4g connection to its fullest.

PDANet, when it works well, uses the full 4G connection.
I've been using Android Wifi Tether with the Fassy profile and Samsung broadcasting. When it first starts up, it works well, but you have to restart your phone if you want to use it again after turning it off.

I'm using Open Garden and get fantastic speeds on 4G. 3G's fairly slow, but that's just the way 3G is.
Ok I still got nothing. Only thing working is PDANet. None of the wifi tethering apps are working. They try but there's always some sort of error. Also tried barnacle. What settings are people getting to work?
Am I understanding this wrong? I am supposed to be able to allow other devices to connect to my phone wirelessly and use its data connection right? I never even see the SSID on any other devices no matter what I do.
I'm using WiFi Tether v3.1 Beta 2 and it's working great.
You can download it here: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
The only problem with it is when you end a tethering session and want to start another you have to reboot. I rarely use it so it's not an issue for me but I'm getting pretty awesome speeds with it on my iPad.

does anyone have any ideals on how to fix this? or is anyone else having the same problem?
- Make sure your phone has good or better reception and leave it in the same spot.
- Check the power settings on your computer, make sure the wireless card doesnt go to sleep.
- Make sure you run your app when plugged in to AC power.
Other suggestions:
- Use USB tether instead - like it or not its more reliable.
- Try a different app.
Hope some of this helps..

YES. Both FoxFi and Wifi Tether work poorly on my Verizon GS3. Speedtests are slower while tethering on my GS3 than when using Wifi Tether on my old Thunderbolt in the same room/same time/same server. Sometimes the SSID won't be detected by my computers and sometimes both apps will simply stop connecting to the internet after initially starting up fine.

Yeah same everything besides phone. Same 3g same spot in room, tbh today i switched back to my old phone just to stop the lag =/ im running the stripped stock rooted rom and wifitether. But like other people here are saying seems like a ton of issues. On this phone i had to mod my radio card could that be the issue with the s3?
This all sounds like another variation of this thread on XDA VZW s3 General
I don't have 4g so I can't see if my phone has an issue there *but* I do have issues on 3g.
If you have poor battery life and your calls sound like you're on the verge of losing the call even though you're in a known area you haven't had issue before, you could be experiencing the same issues others are experiencing. Verizon, as a result, has labeled by device DOA, even though I am tethering on it at this moment to type this.

I use IbVPN but with another phone. So far it works. I assume any VPN solution would work.
Boy, that is probably the most misleading topic ever.
Anyway, the Nexus 5 has nothing to do with being caught tethering as your carrier can tell you're doing it by the user agent of the browser (the most typical method of detecting tethering) and other ways as well.
As for a workaround, there are several available but there's no guarantee on any of them that you won't get busted even so.
It's a chance you take - the carrier tells you it's against the service agreement and you choose to do it anyway; if you get popped and lose your service, the blame lies solely with you alone.
The user agent in this case is android using dolphin browser. Should appear Amy different than my phone.
I'm not whining, BTW, I'm aware of risk and consequence and adult about it. I'm also cheap, so after having used several nexus phones in the past the exact same way and never getting popped sure makes it look like the 5 is the problem doing the reporting about tether use.

This is bad news. I have always been able to tether any tablet through my Nexus device on Tmobile and browse with the stock browser and Netflix app. I have a feeling, Google is playing dirty and sending T-mobile/provider some kind of notice that tethering is now 'on'. I wish they'd develop an app like they did for Google Glass that proxying packets for ANY tethered device. Stick it to the carrier. Especially, Verizon.
