Hey folks, I've spent a few hours dealing with at&t and google and all the rest and I'm at my wits end! Please help me, wonderful xda people
I had to fxz my phone back to stock, and in the process lost all my AT&T Address Book contacts. Under accounts, AT&T Address Book is locked and can't be touched. When I go to it under the settings within contacts, it just tells me to call AT&T. I need to sync AT&T Address Book on my phone because all my hundreds of contacts from my pre-android days are on there! (I use google for all contacts now) Any ideas on how to get this to work?
Alternatively, I'd love to just export my AT&T Address Book contacts and import them into Google. However, there seems to be no export option within the address book online, and both google and bing searches for how to export these contacts have been strangely silent. Anyone else ever have this problem? I can't be the only one in this situation. How is it best fixed? Thanks folks!
You can copy att contacts to your sim card then sync them with Google. About being locked out I have no idea.
Can you log into att here and see your contacts?

Wow that copy paste didn't work out too well.

Well, I can't sopy anything to my sim card right now, as I don't have the contacts on my phone! Lol
As for the lock, if you go to your accounts, at&t address book should be there, greyed out and locked. I can log in and see everything online on my computer, but there is no export option.

I would factory reset.
I could do that, but this lock on my address book existed from stock as well. it's always been this way. Do some of you actually have address books that aren't greyed out and locked?
Mine works I just skip its setup in the beginning. Did it ask you to set it up when you rebooted after fxz?
Jim said reset. I would follow his advice. Maybe a step further and fxz completely stock again and see if you get the att setup at the start.

I'll try a factory reset as soon as I can. Thanks folks.
Factory reset worked. Silly that they don't give you an easier option to manage it.

I have been doing a lot of digging around, but I cannot seem to find anyone with the same problem I am having.
I got my Samsung Captivate a few days back and against my better judgement let the AT&T guy move all my info over from my old iPhone 3g. Everything worked until I tried to open the Contact app which fails and has to be force closed everytime. I have a feeling it does not like th way something is formatted or is corrupt.
Here is the error it gives:
"The process android.process.acore has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again...."
I also have a log if anyone is interested. Save re-flashing and wiping the phone is there an easier way to just wipe the contacts db, or is it possible to delete the contacts program (and is it safe to do this) and sideload it back in?
Thanks in advance for any advice or help.
I actually have the same thing. AT&T guy switched ym contacts and now it doesnt work. Havent found a solution either

That's because the cellbrite machine that we use to transfer contacts is not yet setup to work on the captivate. You will have to do a master data reset, then transfer via sim card, or over gmail. This should be fixed by the end of August.
Yeah, I would never let the AT&T guys transfer anything. Anyway - how did they do it? Via cable?
How were your contacts backed up previously? What was the iPhone syncing too? The easiest thing is to reset the phone, then sync it with whatever the iPhone was syncing with. Since Android is meant to sync with gmail, import your contacts into gmail, and sync. Or sync with Exchange.
There are many options, but please reply with some more info.

Thanks that kinda explains why he was having so much trouble. I wish he had known that at the time.

I am just going to do the master reset and move from there. I'll post here once I get it fixed or if I am having any problems. The iphone was synced so I will just pull from that and convert everything over manually.
Thank you everyone with the quick responses.
I wouldn't let them do anything either. When I picked up my phone on launch day I was the reps first captivate sale. I had to show him how to open the battery cover. Don't you think they would have some sort oftutorial before they launch new devices

Well, we had the phone over a week before it launched, and the rep should've had a training on the device too, but you can't control everyone from a corporate standpoint. Just as with any industry, you find some people who don't know what they're doing.

LOL I had to show my Rep how to open the battery cover too. Then she was like have you use this phone before. I didn't know what to say after that.

Same here, "No, slide the bottom part!"
I'm kinda in a daze from losing my Nexus S last night. The hangover is probably contributing to said daze. I don't have one of those security apps installed. I must have forgotten to restore it when I flashed a new ROM. My inner child is on my inner floor bawling his eyes out at the moment.
Anyway, my question is, what can I do to ensure minimal loss of my privacy. I have already changed all my passwords. Does this automatically unsync my account on the phone? I mean, will the phone ask whoever has it to re-enter the new password? What else am I forgetting? What else can I do?
Would appreciate it if "You should have"s are avoided. Thanks!
I know for sure that if you have changed your Google/Gmail Password, that the phone will prompt for a new one. As far as 'unsyncing' I do not know. I didn't check to see if my contacts/emails/calendar etc were removed when I changed the password and the phone prompted for a new one.
I will change my password again, see what happens and let you know.
*****EDIT*****
I changed my password for my phone, I got a notification about a sign in error, that prompted for a password. The dialing functions still worked as normal, any emails that you had cached were also visibile as well as the calendar. I rebooted without updating the password and could still call out as normal, but when I tried to access the Gmail app, it tried to sync the inbox, but prompted for a password right away.
I don't have any apps installed with other sensitive information, but I would imagine those would function as normal.
Hope this helps.
You could try lookout mobile security "plan b" will help find it.

Hmm sorry to hear that dude, i would probably be bawling on the floor too!
Although... i probably will install one of those security apps now...
Thanks for your help, guys.
Even if you don't change password but someone change sim card, android will require reenter password for sync

I don't know if Plan B would work seeing as how his Google Account is tied to the market account. Because he changed his password and the phone lost connection with the Google account, I don't believe remote installs will work, but I could be wrong.

Yes, I was wondering the same thing. I picked up a new Nexus S(not SAMOLED unfortunately) and synced it up and everything. Finally got to a PC and looked up my Market Account. It listed both phones under devices and I could go all the way to installing it on both phones. It located my current phone.
Unfortunately, I blocked my SIM card prematurely(did not know about Plan B), so, I can't send out the locate SMS. But, I figure whoever has it has probably removed the SIM card, or does not know how to charge it if the battery is dead or is using a SIM on it without a data connection. So, no data connection means no app on the phone. I haven't received an email from Plan B for the lost phone.
Why is the phone is still linked to my market account? I can see that the carrier has been changed which means a new SIM.
For now I'm just satisfying myself by installing inane and useless apps on the phone. HAHA! I hope it works and the app installation is going through. I've pretty much lost hope of finding it.
I have the tmobile contact backup turned off & set to not sync. Every time I look at my phone though it is shown in the notification bar as "Checking Status". Does this happen to anyone else? I don't want this damn program running at all!
Mine doesn't seem to be running. i went into manage apps, cleared the data and turned off sync. I still check it every now and again to make sure it's not syncing behind my back. I don't trust it because for the first few days it seemed undeterred when I'd tried to stop it.
I'll try that

Also I would advise you to delete your tmobile contacts form your phone, and just store and sue the google contacts, so that you can be sure if the Tmobile contacts syn has reenabled itself after you disabled it.
I can't wait for Root so we can get rid of this stuff!

I don't want to sync my contacts with google simple because it'll add any email address that you email. I use Outlook to handle them. I did clear the contact backup data & haven't seen anything happen since then
For some reason when I got the phone it added all my contacts about 5 times each... I had to delete everything from the phone itself, then resync with tmobile back up because of all the crazy linking of phone numbers. I don't even store contacts on my phone anymore I purely use the tmobile backup list and facebook contacts.
Hey
So a friend of mine lost his phone. He texted me asking for help on retrieving it.
I obviously thought of Plan B. But the problem is that he signed into the same Gmail account on two phones so plan b may not go to the right phone.
Will resetting the new phone allow plan b to go to the lost pphone?
Any ideas?
Plan B will probably work of you just remove the Google account from the second phone, rather than resetting it.

When you click install...
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lookout.labs.planb&hl=en
It gives you the option of which phone to install it to. The phone list is in chronological order. Send it to both if you have to. You will get 2 locations in your Gmail as long as your friends Gmail is still logged in. Obviously you'll know which one is the right one.
Thanks. I installed it remotely.
However Plan B still hasn't sent me a location.
Any ideas on imei tracking?

When I log in, it still gives me the option to install to all my previous phones. They are all listed and I know I logged out.
Maybe whoever found the found already wiped it. Since that Gmail is no longer associated with that phone, the install won't go through. It just gets lost in cyber space.
Once the lost phone is reset / wiped. Chances of locating it slim down. I hope someone turns it in for your friend. Good luck.
My brother got a Nexus 5 from T-mobile today. All his contacts on HTC Sensation are synced to Google appear so on both phone and through a web browser. I was helping him set it up this evening and everything seemed fine - had him sign into Google yada yada yada. When he went into his contacts it was empty, same with his Gmail emails. He has 200+ contacts an quite a few emails in his inbox so I thought this was strange.
I checked the Google account under settings and said everything had synced just fine with no errors. Found this to be odd so I wiped data and cache on both Gmail app and Google Contacts Sync app. Rebooted phone, nothing. Wiped dalvik cache, nothing. Removed and readded Gmail account, nothing. Factory reset, nothing.
Basically tried everything I know to no avail. It's odd that it is saying that it is synced when it indeed it is not - there isn't even an error message.
Anyone else having issues with this? Find this very very strange and there is hardly ever a phone issue that I can't solve and I'm stumped. Now I did manage to just export contacts to storage on Sensation and then copy the .vsf file to computer and then copied it to Nexus 5 and imported so he has his contacts but still no emails.
Considering just flashing CM11 onto it and seeing if that does it but don't want to go through all that if I don't have to - my brother is basic user anyway, he wouldn't even know what's going on if I were to flash CM11.
Just seeing if anyone else has issues like this. Ant suggestions would be great.

You say the contacts are visible through a pc, you mean via Gmail on the pc right? This could indicate he is signed into the incorrect account. I know I have more than one....
Sometimes the Android Gmail app needs a manual pull down refresh to show mail, and make sure the appropriate inboxes are syncing via the Gmail app settings. The manage labels option, I think.
And in the People app, press the overflow button and tap accounts. Check the check box and select the correct account.

No disrespect sir, but this is probably one of the first things I check. I used to work at an AT&T store for 4+ years and this always seemed to be the customer's issue with "not syncing." He has only one Gmail account and that is the one logged onto the phone. When I log into this SAME account on a web browser the contacts are there. Like I said the phone is telling me everything is synced, yada yada yada but still nothing. I appreciate you trying to help but that certainly is not the issue here. There is something deeper than that causing this issues and I cannot for the life of me figure it out. So frustrating.

I understand your frustration. I suppose you've already tried syncing his contacts to your phone? It wouldn't be the first time a Google account was boogered up.
If that works, make a new Google account and import the contacts to it, then attempt a sync. If that works, there is an issue on Google's end with that original account.

Oh shoot, forgot to mention that, this is even more odd. I added his Google account to my Nexus 7 and my GS5. On the Nexus 7 contacts or emails do not show up (even though they say they are synced). On the GS5 the contacts show up but still no emails. Now you can really start to understand my frustration as that is just down right goofy. Who knows, so annoying though.
