Recently I've not been able to sync my phone to my computer. Having to use the wife's phone as a vessel to put music on my SD card. Every time I plug my phone in to my USB for the computer it doesn't recognize the phone. The little screen on the phone that would normally come up asking you what you want to do (sync, charge, tether etc). No settings have been changed that I know of on the phone. It's set up to ask me what I want to do and the normal thing it initially does is charge. What would cause the problem? I'm wanting to try one of these ICS roms but can't yet. Currently rooted on newSENSE. Thanks guys.

Do you have USB Debugging Checked ? Did it get Un-checked by mistake ? Have you checked and made sure that HTC Sync is up to date ( Latest Version ) ? You can try a different USB Cable. Inspect the one you have, make sure it's not damaged. Also is it a Genuine HTC USB Cable ? The Generic ones sometimes cause issues. One last thing, do you keep your Device in your Pocket. If you do, make sure the USB Port is clean. Inspect it make sure there is no debris in it. Like Lint, Dirt, or just random Crud. You can use Compressed Air to clean it out. You just have to be very careful. I usually use a ShopVac, and am very cautious.

All this, plus try a different port on the computer and restart it. Sometimes my shift is picky about being connected

Yes I made sure USB debugging is on. Haven't cleaned it in a while cause yes I do have it in my pocket. Will try that. But wouldn't it not charge if it was dirty?
Sent from my PG06100 using xda app-developers app
It would still most likely charge. Reason I say this is because I've run into this issue before myself . Turned out to be a combination of a Bad USB Cable, and a Dirty USB Port. Also like I mentioned earlier, make sure the USB Cable is good.
what he said
My original usb cable was bad out of the box. Couldnt connect to my pc but was charging. Sprint swapped and connected right up.
Hey I just noticed that your Siganture says your on an OG EVO 4G. Did you ever get this resolved? If not you not also want to make sure that your Charging Port isn't coming loose. That's a common problem with the OG EVO.

anyone else have this problem?
I have the latest HTC Driver.
When I first got my phone it was perfectly normal until I rooted my phone. I would have to try plugging and unplugging the Stock HTC USB multiple times for my computer to recognize my phone. It is getting pretty annoying. I was wondering if anyone else has this problem as well. (doesnt matter which ROM I use, problem continues.)

You sure it's not the cable ?
Or, perhaps the usb port connector on the phone, or the one you're trying to plug into could have loose/damaged contacts?
Obviously, somethings changed or different. Try to replicate as many of the conditions that you had when it did work, as you can.

i have three HTC phone charger. 2 of them are in perfect condition, brand new, and they both still give me the same problem. maybe, something is wrong with my phone inside?

I'm talking about the cable itself, and maybe that's what you are talking about when you say "htc phone charger."
As far as "something wrong with your phone inside," you perhaps are missing or not understanding what I'm referring to.
Look at your phone up close at the part where you plug it in. Real close. You should see 4 little metal strips... Contacts. I was trying to suggest for you to check if there was a physical issue, loose, bent connector on the cable or on that part of the phone.
Or, on the connector of the port on the computer you were trying to connect it to.
The fact that you have to do it several times for it to recognize, but that it at least DOES eventually recognize it, made me suspect it's something intermittent, like a bad/loose connector, or a cable that has one of the wires inside it broken.
I don't know what other than something having to do with the usb connector on the phone, possibly where it's soldered to the PCB, that would cause it to intermittently give you problems.
Hello everyone,
I have 2 LG Quantum's, and whenever they're plugged in to my PC via USB, if I (even barely) move the micro-USB cable attached to both of the phones, it rapidly disconnects then reconnects to the computer. This has proved problematic when installing XAP's. I find it strange that both of my models do this, and would like to know if anyone else with a Quantum has the same issue? This way I'll know if it's either my USB cable or both of the phones just having a bad port.
Thanks in advance,
6-4.
I have an LG Quantum and the same thing you described happens to me when the USB cable is plugged into my laptop. But when the USB cable is plugged into a wall charger, tapping the cable doesn't disconnect the phone.
I'm using the microUSB cable that AT&T included with the phone, I don't know if that makes a difference...
I've never seen this on my LG Quantum.
Did it ever work properly on either?
It sounds hardware related. Are you always carefule when plugging and unplugging it, so that it is straight.
Do you use the same cable on the same laptop for both?
I know i just leave my cable connected to the laptop all the time.
Could be a bad cable. Try a new one or one from a friend that does not have the problem. Micro USB is on pretty much every phone, except iPhones now.
If it's only a problem for xaps. You could start using the website to install, which will install any app over the air or through WiFi. Or are you sideloading?
I had this happen to my HD7. The root cause was really silly: lint in the USB port (from keeping it in my pocket so much). Turn off the phone, remove the battery, get some good light and a sewing needle (or similar), and gently clean out the USB port. It doesn't have to be perfect, just enough that the little locking nubs on the USB cable can engage. That will let it keep a reliable connection.
I have the LG Quantum and have not seen this at all.

I thought this was for custom ROM's only? How do I do it?

This sounds like a possibility. I'll check that out later when I get home. I'm not entirely sure if it always happened, but it seems to me that it did. And re: other user who always has the issue, mine also works fine when plugged in to the wall.
He was talking about sideloading. For installing official apps directly, you can either use the Marketplace website or just use the Marketplace app on the phone. There's no need to use Zune for that, so I'm pretty sure that's not what he meant.

I am talking about side loading. I looked into the ports and found they are clean. Both phones use the same USB cable however I've tested them with others before with the same result.
Well after my microUSB cable was noticeably frayed I have replaced it, and am able to confirm that was the source of my problems.
So my girlfriends little brother gave me his skyrocket. He asked me to backup his pics, which I did with no problem. I then did a factory reset. After that, my computer does not recognize the phone! I've tried different cables, different computers. My girlfriend has the exact same phone, connects right away.
I even flashed it with a different rom and put ICS on it. No luck! I then proceeded to take it to a phone repair place, thinking it might be the actual usb port. They said they checked out the port, and it look fine. All solder joints were good, no bent pins.
The weird thing is, is that it connects on an average of 1/20 times! It charges perfectly too. The phone doesn't go in and out of charge mode if i wiggle the cable either. I'm kind of confused! Is there a file on the phone that tells the computer what it is when connected? If so, can I manually replace that file? WHAT DO I DO!
When you goto recovery mode can you goto mounts and say mount usb? and does the pc recognize it then?

Kind of. We had trouble with it when flashing it. I personally didn't flash it. I watched my friend do it

You could try installing the drivers again..
You mean on the computer? I did that. No luck. It does connect more often though WITH the drivers.
I had some problems with USB connectivity too. Using the cable that the Skyrocket came with solved my issues.
Have you tried any combination of restarting and reinstalling the drivers?
Swyped from my Nook Tablet, running CM7.
Yes. I've tried multiple cables including the stock cable. Installing drivers, restarting both devices. I have definitely ruled out the cable, the PC ( PC's actually), and the physical USB port.

I had similar issues, messed with phone for a bit and came up with this
System settings>more>USB utilites
Now I got a screen that says USB mass storage with a button that says Connect storage to PC. Tap Button.
A window will pop up asking to Turn off USB debugging (if on) Tap OK
Connect USB cable to storage (plug USB cord into PC).
You should now be at the USB Mass Storage screen, Tap button at bottom (Turn on USB storage)
I found this to be the way to turn on Mass Storage since I flashed ICS, I believe. Hope this helps you, it took me a little while to figure out.

Of course, that's how it's always been except in a slightly different location on ICS
I've tried that also. Didn't work

it basically sounds like the USB port on the phone is dead. Warranty that sucker
I took it to a repair shop. They said the port was perfectly fine!

Not to mention that it was working perfectly before I did the factory restore

how exactly did the repair shop test it?
try plugging it into another usb port on the same computer or try using a different computer. It could be the usb port on the PC itself.

That's the first thing he tried, it's in the OP
yeah i've tried everything! The repair shop determined that the port was good by examining it under a scope and they also said they tried re-flowing the solder joints. They said they wanted to stay away from replacing the usb port because it was very difficult to replace, not to mention they didn't warranty the job!
Someone has to know the answer to this!

if its still under warranty replace it, thats all u can do. No one else in this forum besides u can physically touch the phone, so if you've tried all suggestions thats all thats left
i have the same problem but mine is little different, when i power off the phone it keeps on going to download mode, i keep on restarting it and it goes back to download mode, i flash stock rom and it does the same, i flash ics rom and it keeps on doing the same can anyone help?
So this issue started a few days ago. Any time I plugged my phone in it would constantly connect and disconnect from the pc. I've tried multiple usb cables, ports, and the 3 PCs I have with the same result on each. Now when I plug it in, it is no longer being recognized by the PC, Odin, ADB, etc... It will charge but that is it.
I have a warranty replacement coming to me however I need to be able to get this one back to stock... Any suggestions?
Before anyone asks, NO it has never been wet, dropped, damaged in any way, set on fire, caught in a land slide, earthquake, what have you.. The phone itself functions perfectly fine. All drivers are up to date, none of my PCs configurations have changed. I have one I use specifically for app development and not even that one will see the phone.
I had the same problem. I used a different cable and it all worked better....now with that said it happened again so I flashed my phone back to stock and all was well.
Then went to flashing ROMS.

Really check out the micro usb cable. A bad cable will just about always allow a device to charge, but data transfer is another story. If you really have tried a few micro USB cables, then it the problem relies elsewhere. Try restarting both phone and PC, and if neither works, sounds like you have a busted port on the Skyrocket.
Thank you both for your responses. I am a PC technician so I followed my usual troubleshooting steps to figure this out. I narrowed it down to either all of my cables are bad (not a chance) or the phone is just f**ked (likely). Ah well ill have to try to use another way to force the stock firmware and recovery on here. Lol
HTC = Hate The Consumer
I use my old Nokia OEM USB cable. Connects with the right number of pins on the USB connection end. I'd check your USB cables for # of pins . Skyrocket uses 5 I believe. Also that there is sufficient power to your USB ports. Aka avoid front USB ports which could only be 4 pin....
Sent from my I727 rocket on Marz! @[email protected]
When you plug the usb cable in, do you see the usb icon at the top left of your screen? I have to pull that window down to tell it to connect to pc, then confirm it again before mine connects. Mine doesn't auto connect on its own.
I see you've been a member for a few years so if its not connecting, that really sucks man. Hope you get it figured out.

Not running the AOKP ROM are you? The R3 build had an issue with this, and all AOKP will disable USB to PC if you enable 'fast charge' under ROM Control...
Good luck :S
According to what I've been reading you can try using the *#7284# code and setting the USB portion from PDA to MODEM and then back to PDA and it would kickstart the connection. No dice for me though. Ive been through 7 different USB cables already.. I am not about to go and buy one just to keep playing with it my other phones connect just fine using the same cables. No, I am running the latest Sky ICS
Hi, my TF101 died some time ago and the other day i changed the motherboard and it came back to life.
The problem now is that is not detected by any pc when connected via usb, not even in APX mode.
The usb cable works fine, it charges the tablet but nothing else. Tried a couple of cables, pcs, macs, usb debugging on/off, etc.....
Now it is in stock 4.0.3 and i cannot find a way to root it.
Any idea what can i do to root it?
Thanks!
Anyone? Having stock android is very painfull.... Need help!

Have you double checked everything is plugged in correctly on the board you replaced ?
Cna't remember off hand how to root without USB on stock ICS, but check transformerforums.com - there are a guides on rooting ICS, you might find something
I would look at the USB issue though, maybe just taking the thing apart and connecting it all back up will sort it, could just be a loose connection

Yea i thought about that but if the tablet is charging then the connections are ok, as it's the same flex that connects the port to the mb. Right?

Well it's the same one, but different pins, sometimes people find they can charge but not connect to USB, but a replacement cable fixes the problem
Worth checking imo
My 2 year old original cable still charges but does not work for USB connections. Had to get a new cable. New one works perfectly well.
