Hello everyone,
I have 2 LG Quantum's, and whenever they're plugged in to my PC via USB, if I (even barely) move the micro-USB cable attached to both of the phones, it rapidly disconnects then reconnects to the computer. This has proved problematic when installing XAP's. I find it strange that both of my models do this, and would like to know if anyone else with a Quantum has the same issue? This way I'll know if it's either my USB cable or both of the phones just having a bad port.
Thanks in advance,
6-4.
I have an LG Quantum and the same thing you described happens to me when the USB cable is plugged into my laptop. But when the USB cable is plugged into a wall charger, tapping the cable doesn't disconnect the phone.
I'm using the microUSB cable that AT&T included with the phone, I don't know if that makes a difference...
I've never seen this on my LG Quantum.
Did it ever work properly on either?
It sounds hardware related. Are you always carefule when plugging and unplugging it, so that it is straight.
Do you use the same cable on the same laptop for both?
I know i just leave my cable connected to the laptop all the time.
Could be a bad cable. Try a new one or one from a friend that does not have the problem. Micro USB is on pretty much every phone, except iPhones now.
If it's only a problem for xaps. You could start using the website to install, which will install any app over the air or through WiFi. Or are you sideloading?
I had this happen to my HD7. The root cause was really silly: lint in the USB port (from keeping it in my pocket so much). Turn off the phone, remove the battery, get some good light and a sewing needle (or similar), and gently clean out the USB port. It doesn't have to be perfect, just enough that the little locking nubs on the USB cable can engage. That will let it keep a reliable connection.
I have the LG Quantum and have not seen this at all.

I thought this was for custom ROM's only? How do I do it?

This sounds like a possibility. I'll check that out later when I get home. I'm not entirely sure if it always happened, but it seems to me that it did. And re: other user who always has the issue, mine also works fine when plugged in to the wall.
He was talking about sideloading. For installing official apps directly, you can either use the Marketplace website or just use the Marketplace app on the phone. There's no need to use Zune for that, so I'm pretty sure that's not what he meant.

I am talking about side loading. I looked into the ports and found they are clean. Both phones use the same USB cable however I've tested them with others before with the same result.
Well after my microUSB cable was noticeably frayed I have replaced it, and am able to confirm that was the source of my problems.

I have no idea if this will be useful to most people, but does this interest anyone so far? Requires a rooted phone duh.
Well, it works. That's pretty cool.
Interesting indeed, but I don't think I'll find it easier than just plugging my phone in.

Same. No point really starting the app, then opening termal/cmd prompt and typing in a command to connect when you can just plug it in and go.
Well i dont want to dig up to the floor, where my AC charger is and pull out the USB cable so i can stick it into the computer and back when I'm done.
I never connect the phone to PC anyway, coz of app2sd card corruption, so this is a lifesaver for me.

Well that's understandable. Me, I have like 4 micro USB cords. One connected to the ac charger, one connected to my car charger, another connected to my computer, and then an extra one just in case.
Nooob
I dont get it to work Where on my pc should I write the connect comand?
Hello suddenly my nexus s stopped connecting with data with the pc it only charges, tried with 3 diffrent computers with diffrent os , no menu popping on nexus and nothing connected on the computer(like i didnt connect anything), i removed the battery left it for some time installed stock rom still nothing. It was acting normally for a second and the other it stopped any help appreciated!
Are you sure you're using the cable that came with the phone? I have an LG Wink featurephone here that uses the same connector at the phone end -- its cable will charge my Nexus S (using the computer, obviously, but also when used with either the LG or Samsung charger) but no USB connection happens when I use it. Only the cable that came with my Nexus S provides a USB connection when I connect to the computer. I guess there are pinout differences between the two cables.
If you're sure you're using the right cable, I would guess that it's gone bad if it doesn't work on any computer. You can buy an (overpriced) replacement from Samsung or maybe a cheaper one on eBay or at a retail store. If the latter, be sure the seller lists it as compatible with the Nexus S.
it happened with the original cable ppfff i dont know...
same problem

Hi
I have the same problem
I have no idea what the problem could be.
We are not alone with this problem: code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=13553
Now installed stock rom as well but still the same problem.
If i starting the NS in the bootloader mode the phone is not recognized by the computer.
It would be great, if someone knows a solution!

I've been trying to get help with this for weeks. No one is even responding to my posts. I thought it was something OBSURDLY simple, such that people didn't even want to waste their time responding to me.
Seeing same problem, No connetion via USB
Posted problem in General,, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1104245
Tried different cords, different computers and operating systems,, did cold start several times on phone (removed battery) still no luck, I am running totally stock
Curious do any of you have the Google Music Beta?? (maybe a over zealous rights thing?)
just tried it with a Win 7 machine that had never seen it before and it said it could not recognize the device,, me thinks that the MS device driver DB is messed up buy some recent Win update??

My phone charges just fine. And my USB connectivity was fine until I manually installed 2.3.4.
~I had usb connection problems after upgrade to 2.3.4 a bit different but I managed to get the USB back by formatting the SD card.

I was on 2.3.3 when this happened, i tried to flash 2.3.4 then and again it didnt work but the strange thing is that when i was moving the mini usb the first times up and down it was shown for a moment as a broken usb device. Then this stopped and was not shown at all on the computer and finally the phone charged super slow when connected to electricity
Beginning to believe that it is a physical prob with USB connector on phone. It seems to start/stop charging when wiggling usb on phone but no mounting. Doe anyone know best way to resolve , T-mobile but bought from Best Buy? so to Best Buy? FOR SUPPORT /EXCHANGE? suggestions?
I've seen loose connections before. My suggestion ain't the cheapest but the plug, on the cable end, shouldn't wiggle. I went to a corporate sprint store, the ones that actually have working display phones, and got their usb to micro usb data cable. The thing with that cable is when you plug it in the phone side, it goes into the jack firmly. You can almost feel the little locking tabs click into place. There should be no play or wiggle with that cable as long as there's no damage or abuse with the jack on the phone. IMO, that's a good data cable. It's never given me problems before.
Also, sometimes the cable is only wired for charging. A true data cable will be wired correctly and be able to both charge and transfer data. Usually the cables that come with the phone are crap quality. I don't know if my suggestion will help but it won't hurt to have a good cable for data transfer and flashing. The last thing you want is a flaky connection from a cheap cable when you're flashing roms. Russian roulette with bricking a phone in a worse case situation.
Did you try reboot the computer and the phone? How about a different usb port? How about unplug any other usb device in case it's conflicting for some unknown reason? It sounds like so many people with windows 7 are having problems. Usually always happens with a new os that's released. Xp, for flashing devices and programming different hardware devices, has never given of a problem. I have a small partition with xp on it just for that purpose only.
off to Samsung for repair for me...
After time on phone with them and a factory reset belief is that the usb connector is defective. BTW Best Buy just hands off to Samsung 1-800 #
So Back to a barely functional G-1 for a while, glad I could find it!
So is Samsung or the carriers replacing or fixing units?
My USB data died shortly after 2.3.4 ota update.
Wifi FTP is fine for data transfer but I want USB debug to work...
Shame on google and Samsung, this bug has been around for months.
no shame on anyone...
I went through a factory reset with Samsung on phone that isolated the problem to what is apparently a loose usb connector, nothing to do with software... only hassle is sending it in for repair, as` mentioned problem needs to be dealt with Samsung customer service (not carrier or Best Buy), they were fine on phone...
anyone else have this problem?
I have the latest HTC Driver.
When I first got my phone it was perfectly normal until I rooted my phone. I would have to try plugging and unplugging the Stock HTC USB multiple times for my computer to recognize my phone. It is getting pretty annoying. I was wondering if anyone else has this problem as well. (doesnt matter which ROM I use, problem continues.)

You sure it's not the cable ?
Or, perhaps the usb port connector on the phone, or the one you're trying to plug into could have loose/damaged contacts?
Obviously, somethings changed or different. Try to replicate as many of the conditions that you had when it did work, as you can.

I'm talking about the cable itself, and maybe that's what you are talking about when you say "htc phone charger."
As far as "something wrong with your phone inside," you perhaps are missing or not understanding what I'm referring to.
Look at your phone up close at the part where you plug it in. Real close. You should see 4 little metal strips... Contacts. I was trying to suggest for you to check if there was a physical issue, loose, bent connector on the cable or on that part of the phone.
Or, on the connector of the port on the computer you were trying to connect it to.
The fact that you have to do it several times for it to recognize, but that it at least DOES eventually recognize it, made me suspect it's something intermittent, like a bad/loose connector, or a cable that has one of the wires inside it broken.
I don't know what other than something having to do with the usb connector on the phone, possibly where it's soldered to the PCB, that would cause it to intermittently give you problems.
Just wondering if anyone else's usb cable is a little bit "shaky" after being plugged in? I guess it's normal since i don't have any poor contact issue so far, but ...it's kinda annoying..
Sorry if you didn't notice it before but you do now
ye my last android did that too. after using the micro usb port a few times it gets "shaky"-er haha

My Epic 4G Touch is the same exact way. However, I never had this issue with my Evo. Wonder if its an issue with the ports on Samsung phones.
I have found taking a pair of pliers and adding some slight pressure to the end of the usb cable has helped tighten things up. Make sure you are squeezing the entire connector and not using needle nose.

Its funny that you mention that because the looseness seems to be more dependent on the actual USB cable than the port itself (at least on this phone) Luckily, I haven't had any real connection problems with my phone. However, after replacing the cable, it seems to fit more snugly. Either way, its a little odd that it the same cable will seem more loose in this phone, but fit just fine in my previous one (still have it as a spare).
I've been having this problem lately also. Thinking in was a bug in the rom or a bad cable, the problem persists and its getting worse to the point it constantly will connect and disconnect repeatedly. I'm thinking its the phone because I've changed cables, usb ports and it still does it. But sometimes it will stick normally. Wierd...
If you have even tried brand new cables (since your existing ones may be worn out), then I would say that the port on the phone is likely damaged. Looks like it may be time for a service center repair.
My SR is the same way. The mini usb cocksoff to the right. I've experienced the same with a few Motos. I've came to the conclusion it is the cables themselves. I have noticed that the two teeth on the male plug get kind of wore out or not even pop back out and furthermore eventually damage the female port to where the phone will cycle from power to no power. I've especially seen this with OEM cables. I also saw a thread here where the guy gives an awesome, detailed breakdown of a screen replacement. The site he links has the replacement chip with the mini usb port if you feel froggy...
I have had a UK SII since launch (originally on O2) but rooted and now using CM9.
Ive noticed recently that my charger needed to be wiggled a bit in the port for the phone to start charging.
Now it seems to have gotten worse and now i have to have the plug tilted in the usb port at a certain angle and apply pressure to it for it to start charging. Ive tested with 4 different leads. Connected to my laptop and phone keeps on flicking to usb debugging message so i am presuming the connections in the usb port are faulty.
Ive also cleaned a load of fluff out from it and its still the same.
The phone is just under a year old... so im hoping its covered for a 2 year cover like my old Sony Erricson phone.
Do you think they will repair this fault or make me pay due to excessive wear n tear?
I charge once a day over night, and dont use the port for much else apart from probably undre 20times connected to laptop.
Thanks
did you try the cable with something else than your phone? It looks like it's probably some broken part of the cable inside, but try anyway.
If it works fine with everything else it's your phone, if doesn't work with other things it's the cable and i'm not sure if they would replace it, because it could be your fault if it's the cable.
