Just did a factory data reset after having my Infinity come to a grinding halt. Initially, the stock web browser came to a crawl and began to force close just about every hour of use. Browser began to stop responding and ask if i wanted to wait or close.. Typing would be delayed and would display in spurts, no matter what app or web browser i would be using at the time. Screen would lock up completely at times. Pressing the home icon would take me to a blank homescreen with no icons and would take forever to recover. Launcher would stop responding asking if i wanted to wait or close. Overall system responsiveness began mimicing the Prime's issues on its worst day! Which leads me to the GPS...
GPS was working fine when i first received my C6OKASxxxxxx, but now it wasnt picking up on any satellites at all... it would detect 1 but it wasnt in use. Then i decided to just do the factory reset as was suggested in another thread... when the system was setting up i decided to opt out of letting Google use its Location Services (wifi assisted). I then, after a factory fresh reset, tried GPS Test and this time could not detect a single satellite. I have another Infinity (a C7xxxxxxxxxx) that i am returning to amazon because of multiple fails on quality control, and decided to try that one and disable Google Location Services but it couldnt get any satellites either. Both Infinity's also couldnt refresh to get weather data when using the stock weather widget...
After re-enabling Google Location Services they both immediately located and locked on satellites...
So the question is, is it GPS or AGPS? And what in the world could have caused my tf700 to go to sh**???
I believe it's been common with various Android devices, I remember having this "issue" on HTC Hero under Android 2.1 - 2.3.x versions, it seems you just need Google to do some monitoring for you, which is quite unsettling really. Perhaps someone will come with a better explanation than Google's need to put the blame on legal matters and do some "data collecting", but I feel we have a few things merged here.

Sorry your having such issues. I wanted to say that mine is working fine even with Google Location Services off. In my first initial setup of my tablet I had mine checked off. The Infinity definitely has its own internal GPS no assistance required.

Thanks very much for letting me know that yours works without Google location services active. If i could get a few more people to confirm that theirs works just the same i would simply send this one back and give it one more chance... I'm so torn, cause i really want to like this tablet, and it shines when its working, but I've had pretty bad luck with Asus tablets... what are the chances that i have a C6 AND a C7 with the same problem??? Jeeze... SMH
Anyone else?
I guess i have a faulty tablet... no one else willing to contribute to this thread?

I'm in a similar situation as you. The tablet I got wouldn't lock on satellites inside. I had to go outside for GPS Test to see any satellites and it only saw 4 satellites and none of them were in use. I did these tests without wi-fi assistance. I did a factory reset multiple times and the GPS was still poor.
Ultimately, I requested a RMA because of other problems like the power and volume buttons being mushy. I'm waiting on a replacement now. Asus seems to have some problems with quality control. If the problems prevent you from using it how you want then I suggest you return it for a refund/replacement as you seem to have gotten a defective tablet. $500 is a lot of money to spend for a tablet that performs less than your expectations.

Thanks hack, I'm just going to return and exchange it... AGAIN.
One more try and if i strike out again i guess ill just do without a tablet until a better one comes along... most likely not an Asus though. I've really tried to give them a chance, but I'm just scared ill get something that has other problems besides the ones I've experienced. I like the tablet, but not the inconsistencies... seems like a rush to production if you ask me.
Has anyone tried the Dual Electronics xgps150a external Bluetooth GPS receiver?
I am a pilot using Naviator (android's answer to ForeFlight) and in-flight my GPS would lose signal when I lowered the tablet below the dashboard.
This Bluetooth reciever says it works with "many android devices".
Has anyone found this device to be compatible with the tf700? (pilot or otherwise)

Figured this might be a good option for peoplewho "need" a stronger GPS signal
EDIT:
Upgraded to ScottsROM Jelly Bean and the GPS is way stronger and had great recep from Fort Lauderdale to Bahamas Chub Cay with tab on my lap.
Longstory short, get scottsrom JellyBean and profit

- Used my own wallpaper jpeg instead of one from the Captivate's stock wallpaper folder
- Beautiful Widgets
- AppBrain App Market
- Fast Web Installer
- Angry Birds Lite Beta (APK FILE, USED ANDROID CENTRAL'S SIDELOADER MACHINE)
- Paper Toss
I've had my phone for exactly 1 week, and after reading all the horror stories of people experiencing the random shut offs, I thought I was lucky up until now. I love this phone a lot despite the obvious GPS issues. Does anyone have any idea on what may be causing this? Hardware or Software issue?
I would hate to exchange it for another with AT&T since I've become so attached to it.
My phone randomly shut down within the first couple of days I had it too. However, it doesn't happen anymore.
I'm still not exactly sure what caused it. Here is what I can remember having differently before and now:
- Used the Grass live wallpaper; now, I'm using a static wallpaper
- Had a corporate exchange account synced; now, only syncing a Google account
And of course, I've been charing the phone more ever since I got it, so maybe the battery needs to "learn" something so that it doesn't automatically shut down?

thanks kevrocks, how long have you had your captivate btw?
There are a few threads here, including mine with the "Let's compare apps" theory http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=763956. No on has been able to figure it out. However, in my observation, I had my Use GPS Satellites turned off while I was away on vacation in Europe. In the 7 days I was away, my phone never turned off on me. That was last week. This week, it still hasn't turned off (knock on wood). Could that be the culprit?
Do your own test. Uncheck the "Use GPS Satellites" in the Location and Security menu. Check it when using Maps or Navigation but don't forget to Uncheck it when not in use. Observe for a week and see if you get the same results as I did.
Good luck.

It's been 1.5 weeks so far.
Mine did this also, when i called Samsung they explained to me that they don't know what the problem is that is causing this issue and that some users are experiecning it. They told me that I would need to send the phone in with Phone, Bat, and Bat Charger for a complete diagnostic overview. Unwilling to do this I just returned the phone for a different one. I'm thinking that if it happens it hardware and you are best off getting a replacement rather then messing with it.

Funny you mention location. I flashed jh2, latest sre, and tats lag fix yesterday. I was actually turning on my locations and my phone shutdown. I figured it was the oc kernel.
Had other random reboots/shutdowns after. Could have been the flash. Just fyi'ing.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
mine shut off for the first time yesterday, this is my second, first returned for a loose battery cover and speaker issue. I'm hoping the phone doesnt continue to shut off. Ive spoken to ATT, and i'm kinda screwed right now if it ends up being a hardware issue with the phone. i'm past my 30 days.
Oh, I also performed a factory data reset, and I haven't gotten any random shutdowns ever since.
I also spoke with Samsung technical support, and the rep suggested to do a soft reset. This is where you remove the battery, clean the gold contacts on the phone and battery, and then reinsert the battery.
I've had mine since the first Thursday it was out. For the first week or two, it shut down about once a day. After that, I've never had a random shut down. Don't know why, I've played around with settings and apps since day one back and forth, so I don't believe its any certain setting or app. Maybe a part of the phone or build getting adjusted?
I remember read somewhere that this is actually a hardware flaw: the battery barely touches the PINs. So if there is any free play in the battery compartment, your phone will randomly loss contact with battery and hence shutdown. Exchange the phone seems to be the only solution. Or you can insert some paper on the other end of the battery to make sure it tightly presses against the PINs.
Mine never encounters this problem regardless how I mess with my phones (flashed firmware couple times and rooted, updated many many times).
It definitely reacts as if the power was removed from the phone. There is no power down screen or indication of rebooting. I have looked at the contacts on the battery, but my last phone made a perfect connection as far as I could tell.
If it is a hardware issue, then I'm perfectly okay with that. I could wire the battery directly to the phone and problem solved. I've also heard of people having a lot of luck buying the cheap chinese batteries for the phone off of ebay to correct their shut down issues. Maybe their connectors are pushed more toward the surface than the Samsung battery.
Wanted to get a read from folks as to what their Gut feel is. Are you confident that Sammy will really fix this? Any by fix, I mean the following. This comes from experiences with 2 HTC smartphones (Aria, and the Pure):
1. GPS locks in under 5 seconds in clear sky conditions
2. Usable navigation; IOW, 30-50m accuracy, again under ideal conditions.
3. Usable navigation such that it stays locked while driving at highway speeds.
TIA.
I have not experienced any of the above issues (post update) except for the 5 second lock, and even my garmin can't do that. The cog2.2 had my gps jacked up so I reverted back and it works great again.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I did My Tracks for the first time today and was surprised by the results - highway for 15 miles, 15 miles off (obtained the lock at highway speeds as well) But it lost me in this one dead area about a mile from my house - I drop most calls through this one area as well too.. must be a whole in the ozone
However! (Always a however, right?) Tonight while walking the dog around the neighborhood, the phone could see up to 12 satellites.. yet it didn't get a lock for over 5 minutes. <--- This is the biggest problem I have with the GPS on this phone. INCONSISTENT AS HELL.
What causes the inconsistency?? So since I've owned the phone (release day) and it's been this long and inconsistent from the beginning, I am beginning to lose my confidence in a real fix (at least Samsung can make some kind of formal announcement you know?)
My GPS has always worked. Stock JF6. Cognition 2, 2.1, 2.2.1-5. Anything I throw at it, it just works. Freeway, walking, indoors, etc. I think it is partly a hardware issue.
Mine is fixed
I ordered my Captivate from AT&T's online store. GPS did not work, no matter what kind of settings I played with (lbstestmode, etc.). Got the update, no help. Took it back to the AT&T store and replaced it. Got the update and it works fantastically. If yours is still in the 30 day warranty period get it switched out.
Considering that many people had the gps issue fixed with the ota update or with the newly released froyo, yet many still have problems, I think there are some bad phones. I'll try to get mine replaced even though it's outside the 30 days.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I'm on my second Captivate. I have no faith that GPS will be reliable enough to use for navigation purposes or apps like My Tracks or even Layar. The OTA update definitely helped, but turns and changes in direction throw it off by quite a bit.
About all it is good for is telling your weather app what city you are in.
For me, the GPS didn't work from the first day I bought the phone. It got a lot better after the OTA update. However, it's getting mess up again in the last few days. I've heard other people from this forum said the GPS will go bad after a few weeks, I guess that's happening to me now. Moreover, the lag seems to be getting worse too.
I'm running Cognition 2.2 FroYo and for the first time ever I got 11/11 sattelites locked. My ride home it stayed more or less dead on the street i was on, occassionally wavered onto the sidewalk a bit or whatnot in My Tracks. That's using the stock settings (spirent-lcs.com and Standalone, with Use Wireless Networks off). If this does not degrade over time, I'd call it fixed for sure.

Keep it coming folks; seems like for the most part people's gut feel is about in line with mine. Im going to return my Captivate to Amazon and have them replace it to see if I can see any improvement. Not holding my breath though.

Mine has always worked on both of captivates. It's in no way perfect but it gets the job done.
I just ordered a replacement Captivate from Amazon. I will then update the software to JH7 in the un-mollested state to see what kind of improvements I see, if any.
Crossed fingers............Bottom line, im not too confident.
So I got my replacement Captivate from Amazon. The second I got it, I stepped outside to see if I can get a GPS lock. I stood there for 5 minute, and no lock.
So I did the software update; which worked. It didnt work on my "molested" captivate.
I then went outside for a drive. Locked very quickly I think 5 seconds. Accuracy was very good; certainly on par with the two HTC smart phones Ive owned.
Maybe its dumb luck that I got a good unit; but it seems not overly molesting your captivate is a good idea until people really understand the consequences.
EDIT: The above drive I mentioned was in neighborhood roads, at relatively low speeds. On my way to work it was definitely NOT as accurate as my HTC Pure. It showed me about 1 exit behind; was about a half or three quarters of a mile.
I just want to say that I called Samsung support directly yesterday and the guy told me that "he hasn't heard anyone else who's applied the JH7 update that said their GPS wasn't fixed."
SO CALL SAMSUNG SUPPORT FOR THE LOVE OF GOD. Don't stop calling. They need to know the update didn't fix it!

They already know. I can guarantee you that some of their dev team consistently troll these forums.
My GPS works pretty well, especially considering its a phone, since JH7 OTA update.
The problem you're talking about with locks under 5 seconds, isnt always going to happen. It depends on how long its been since the last time gps was used, and how close you are currently to where you last used it.
If you use it and then turn it off, and in a few hours turn it back on, at roughly the last location it was used, it'll get a very quick lock. If you wait days, it wont. If you use it at location A last, then are long ways away from that location when turning it back on, it wont get a quick lock, it has to calculate where its at based on new data from the satellites. Thats the nature of the beast with GPS. My Garmin in my car is the exact same way. If it has to do a cold start it sometimes takes up to 2 mins to get a lock. But once its got it, if I go in a store for a few mins and come right back out, it picks up location almost immediately.
Since JH7 I'd say my GPS performance more than meets my expectations for a mobile phone GPS.
Started out very confident.

Yeah, I'm with you here.
When it came to the HTC video driver fiasco on many of their phones it was sickening that HTC wouldn't do anything about it, or even tackle the issue on future releases. But at least slower video performance than the hardware was capable of wasn't really a deal breaker when it was still working good. So I could understand why a company wouldn't invest a ton to fix it for already purchased phones.
This however is outright broken. It's not a phone with good video performance that COULD perform better with an update. It's a phone with a broken technology that can hopefully be FIXED with an update.
I don't know how Samsung will avoid lawsuits etc etc by manufacturing a blatantly broken piece of technology unless they can rectify the situation... quickly. I think their window is slowly closing on this type of scenario.
As for myself, the GPS problem just isn't an issue since I don't use the GPS anyhow. So I'm not a consumer frothing at the mouth, but the idea that I spent money on a fancy, but broken, phone leaves a bitter taste in that unfrothy mouth of mine.
I'm very confident. I put the leaked froyo from designgears on one of my phones and the lock was fast, and gps accurate. Drove from Chicago to Kohler, WI the other day (~130 miles) and ran gps on the phone along with my dedicated gps unit to check accuracy. Had no issues at all.
I think once 2.2 is released, all of the gps issues will be resolved if the leaked version is any indication.
I'm guessing it's the sum of several issues causing problems.
1. Basic hardware configuration that results in worse signal-to-noise than other handsets.
2. Non-optimized settings that sporadically contribute to slow or poor locks
3. Some kind of software buffering or other issues that cause freeze-ups where the position doesn't update.
When my phone is working well I don't experience problems 2 and 3, and I can live with problem 1. When that's the case I get consistent tracking 95% of my trip. Sometime 2 and 3 seem to creep into the picture for no apparent reason. I hope and expect they will get those problems solved.
i have been unable to get the gps on my g2x to achieve a lock in under 10 minutes, and i have tried krylon's tweak , and some other mods/tweaks i found here on XDA. Do you guys think it is worth sending the phone in to t-mobile/LG? I have seen a lot of threads about some people having problems with their replacements and having to wait weeks for a new phone? Has anyone had a good experience getting a replacement? any feedback would be appreciated
Go ahead and exchange it. The vast majority of phones don't have GPS issues. At least not on the stock ROM.
Today is my last day, and i'm debating returning it as well because of the GPS not being able to get a lock on a stock rom.

Stock rom gps is the best man... If he can't get a lock on stock its probably hardware.the gps in this phone is top notch on stock...
This is surprising. First major great impression walking out of the Tmo store this week with this phone was how fast my GPS lock was. 2-3 seconds. Of course, I came from a year of tweaking my Captivate to finally get it to a satisfactory 100 meter lock in 15 secs.
Sent from my LG-P999 using Tapatalk
Mine sometimes locks in seconds and sometimes takes a bit of time to lock, or I may have to retry sometimes shutting down navigation and opening again... I think its because navigation is in beta, otherwise not much of a problem

I think there must be a bug in the hardware driver for the GPS.. sometimes it works instantly for me, and other times I never get a lock.
There's clearly something funky about the integration of the GPS with the software on this phone. If you look at GPSTest, for example, all the signal-to-noise values are off the scale, running into the text above the graphical area; in GPS Status, the area of the circles representing the satellite positions is supposed to be proportional to the S/N ratio, and they're all huge, much larger than the (presumably normal) sizes in the screenshot in the market. To me, that indicates a units error, where the GPS is reporting in a smaller unit than the software is expecting. That suggests that other facets of the interface between the GPS and the software may be out of kilter and responsible for the erratic behavior.
There may be other factors in play, also. I often get a pretty quick lock, 10-15 seconds. Last week I opened Google navigation and waited for 20 minutes (5 stationary, 15 driving) to get a lock without success. I power-cycled the phone, and when it came back it got a lock essentially as soon as I opened the application. (Which is not dissimilar to other things on this phone -- I find it runs much more smoothly and reliably if I reboot it every couple of days. I'm thinking there's probably some bug in the memory management with fragmentation or leaks.)
I'm running stock everything, BTW.
I get a decent 3G, 4G and GPS signal at my house.
Right down the street I get a GREAT signal.
It's odd cause I can launch Maps or Navigation while driving, and it will take a few minutes to "lock on".
But if I set my destination at the house before leaving, it is almost instant.

I've seen this issue too. It's a bug in the GPS firmware.
well i took the plunge, my new g2x is on the way. I really hope it isn't a bleeder/rebooter.
Love this tablet but this last few days it has started to get really warm on occasion.
On the left side, about an inch in from the SD card slot, the temperature really builds up quickly starting first on the back of the device and eventually getting so hot on the glass it becomes uncomfortable to hold and to swipe. I've seen 48 degrees!
I have noticed this happening when using Dolphin HD browser and particularly if Skype is running in the background.
I wiped the tab, didn't reinstall from market and just loaded Dolphin and it didn't make any difference.
I'm guessing faulty device since there are only a few isolated reports of this online.

Really strange, Phil. Based on your recommendation in "other" forums I turned in my Nook Tab and got a GTab7Plus and I'm just lovin it. Does everything I'd hoped it would do and more I haven't even figured out. So far, (knock on wood) I haven't gotten the Screen of Death nor has the unit gotten hot for any reason and I'm using dolphin browser exclusively. So......you may have a defective unit. Good luck.
Yeah, I think it was faulty. I took it back to Best Buy and they had not had any other returns for this issue.
Unfortunately they are also out of stock so I don't currently have a tablet at all! Seeing what is coming down the pike in the way of tablets I might just wait and see what transpires in the next 3 months. If I get antsy then I'll just pick up another GT7+ (or back to a Nook Tablet if the CM9 project advances quickly).
Also, do you see a color cast on yours at all? I noticed that when there was a white background, for instance reading a book on Kindle or Nook apps, the right lower side of the page had a warm tinge - pink/peach colored. It was quite irritating.
Having issues with Nook app opening my Nook ebooks.

I have received my 7+ and downloaded and installed the Nook and Kindle apps without a hitch. The Kindle books are fine but I seem to be having a problem opening my Nook books. Darn, I am in the midst of a great book and hate reading on my phone.
Any tips on how best to install and manage my Nook ebooks? And, I have a 32gb sd card which I haven't installed but plan to tonight. Will that make a difference? Should I "format" the card before installing on the 7+? How does that work?
Thanks a bunch!
I noticed on the nook software that I needed to open the software and then reopen it before the book would load. Second time is a charm I guess.

I' ve been using VTL Launcher and had some previous issues with my home wifi (couldn't reconnect so my tab was always trying to find it again and again). After resetting router and mainly uninstalling VTL Launcher my tab stopped to be hot and battery life increased rapidly. So I was almost decided tonreturn it due to this problems but since then everything is finally ok and start to enjoy this tab (previously had GT7 original and Note).
Regarding navigation with google maps- consider that there is also huge use of data amount so warmness is probable. I'm using Sygis Aura and has no problems with hottness and also not original car charger has enough power to charge on the roads.
So far haven't noticed the tab getting hot. Just trying to figure out how to use Kies. What a friggin nightmare! Why have they not simplified the Kies interface? It is so convoluted!

Interesting - but mine was totally stock. Yeah, I had added a ton of apps but it was running regular TouchWizz. My little Nook Color running CM7 has exactly the same apps and doesn't even get warm.
what are you using kies for? my computer (win 7) didn't recognize my tab until
i installed kies, it also installed drivers so i can now transfer files
To FloridaPhil: And how long is your battery life? Is wifi ok? Well I' ve noticed then, that our tab doesn't have still very apropriate task managing and this can be causeb exactly by this. Take a look in settings, applications and battery use...I couldn't believa my eyes but even I'm using good task manager with automatic shutndowns of slected apps, there are still huge amount of running apps that drain battery and may cause getting hot. Next thing as well was a fact, that even when wifi connection held perfectly, there was still word 'searching' each couple of seconds (take a look in wifinsettings...)- so next possible reason for getting warm...

It's only searching because your at the wifi settings screen. If you are at the screen where different wifi networks can be selected, android (logically) thinks you might want to select a different network, so scans. If you STAY on that screen, it assumes you want to keep scanning (why else would you stay on that screen?)
This is something that all wifi enabled android devices do. It's NOT scanning every few seconds if you aren't on that specific settings screen...
Gary
Thanks Gary for reasonable explanation, yes this is logical. I was just confused from this, cause not Galaxy Note, nor previous Tab or Streak was behaving like this. But is true that this is my first honeycomb machine and I may not realise this before or it had been different in settings.

My Galaxy SII (gingerbread, AT&T, SGH-I777) does this as well. Even my iPhone does it.
I'm using Kies Air to wirelessly transfer and synch my contacts, calendar, etc....... Experimented and have transferred photos and some other files. Also worked using the USB cable and my Windows 7 recognized and installed drivers. It recognized the SD card as my E drive.
Regarding the heating up issue, so far I have not experienced this. The battery use is under control when I turn off all wireless when I leave my home.
Getting used to the Touchwiz interface but I also installed Go Launcher EX and use that sometimes.
Video playback is awesome on this little tab; last night I was watching movie trailers and was surprised with the sound as well. The Nook's sound was always a bit weak.
I installed an anti-glare screen film and it is awesome for reading. Doesn't detract from the beautiful display and the fonts are crisp.
Regarding opening my Nook books I realized that it worked as soon as I installed my SD card and I downloaded my books so I wouldn't have to deal with having a wireless connection to read my books.
Playing around with the wallpapers and customizing the Samsung screens and installed a super cool "steam punk skull" live wallpaper and it is amazing! Found it free via the Amazon app store....it is fantastic! I also found other beautiful live wallpapers via the Amazon app store including snow scenes.
The tab connected flawlessly to my Samsung Galaxy 4G T-Mobile phone's access point and used that to stream Pandora and download some Kindle books. It was done in my office which doesn't have the best T-Mobile network access and it was surprisingly fast and smooth. No stuttering of the music and emails and Facebook worked great.
I ordered the 6' long usb cable for the tab via Amazon and it has shipped; hopefully it is well matched and charges up the tab just as well as the stock 3' shortie cable. I noted other comments regarding the slow charging of the tab and found that turning off the wifi or simply shutting it down speeds up the charging dramatically.
So that is my report so far and let me say I am enjoying the 7+ tab immensely.
It got to 40C (104F) today while I was playing GTA. The device it's naked (no covers or anything). I'm going to take it to service centre next week :-(

Well i guess thats pretty normal, mine goes up to 42C sometimes.. I guess it depends on your surrounding and climate.
You sure it's a normal thing (this temperature range)? I'm here in Thailand so the ambient temperature is hot to begin with, but the thing is; with prolonged used my hands get uncomfortable.

Just told my wife, she said her galaxy s2 gets hot as well, so I asked her to touch mine ;-)
She says it's about the same. So i really don't know what to think any more, but I'll take it in anyways just for peace of mind.
My mother in law has a TF300 that has been really glitchy, so much so that it was basically unusable (the 4.2 update seems to have made it better, but still not perfect).
Her biggest issue has been sporadic touchscreen non-responsiveness. She thinks that this might be worse when connected to the internet (some app working in the background/updating?). Today she also had it where she couldn't use the screen while connected to the keyboard, but when she disconnected the keyboard it started working again, but that may have been a fluke.
In addition, there are times when it will act as if you've pressed an on screen button, even though your hand was nowhere near said button (almost like a ghosting effect on a keyboard, when the computer is running slow)
I've got the tablet with me for a few hours and I'd like to help her get it to the point where it's working normal again. Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.
Almost as soon as I mentioned the on screen buttons, it started acting up.

Did it just start or has it been doing it since day 1? Go to settings, then Backup & Reset under Language & Input and do a Factory data reset.
That's the fist step in finding the problem. Bad side she will loose all saved data so save it to a pc.
4.2.1 update rolling out
hmm is that a galaxy player 5.0
I can't remember how long it's been giving her issues, but it has been a while. Multiple factory resets haven't fixed it. In the time I've been tinkering with it I've disabled some of the bloatware and turned off Auto Updates from the Play Store, so we'll see if those help in any way.
I've also noticed that the notification bar keeps getting stuck (either up or down). It looks like rotating it helps fix that, but still that's less than ideal...
Ah, the joys of being tech support :silly:
I've got it hooked up to my laptop in an attempt to use LogCat to help debug, but I'm not sure if I'm seeing anything consistent enough to label it as the cause of her troubles. Still, a resource available if anyone knows what I should be looking for there.

Yes, yes it is
If it's under warranty then send it back. Hopefully she hasn't had it over a year.
If it were mine it would've already been in the mail. Since its not unlocked and factory reset aren't working there's not much else that can be done without voiding the warranty.

is there a screen protector on it?
My TF300 always the same thing whenever there was background IO, even with Android 4.1.
Turning off the useless syncing and auto Play Store updates do help.
Also check to see if the storage has been filled. IO performance is also decreased by having a relatively filled flash.
So having disabled the Auto Updates from Google Play seems to have made a world of difference. I'm surprised background IO took so much out of the tablet, since it's running on a quad core, but oh well. Thanks for the suggestions everyone!
