ICS: Finding the real answer. - T-Mobile myTouch 4G Slide

There are many threads here about this device not getting an ICS update. But most of them are just basic info. I've spent a good while talking to HTC & T-Mobile to figure this out. After lots of phones calls, I have gathered a lot of information. I've took a look at it, and just wanted to point out some stuff.
After calling HTC for a while, I was kinda "banned". They would never answer my question. Until I talked to some girl in Texas. She told me that there is zero information on the the MyTouch 4G Slide getting an update. So with some quick thinking, I lied and said it's for a college project. I was researching the fragmentation with HTC phones. I was sent to a supervisor. He explained to me that updates are a 3 way partnership. HTC+T-Mobile+The User. HTC handles all the updates for this device, and does a lot of testing to see of ICS is capable of running on this device. He explained some basic info, and said it's a no. Why?
It will effect the User Experence to much
The hardware can't handle it
Blame T-Mobile
Gingerbread runs better on the device than ICS
(Also this "Supervisor" was advocating the unlocking of the boot loader, and voiding the warranty to get ICS).
So I called T-Mobile and they said that HTC handles all the updates, so I should call them.
After many generic, stupid answers. I finally got a hold of an amazing lady at HTC. She explained a lot of things I never really knew about updates. If HTC made an update for our phone, T-Mobile would push the OTA ASAP. HTC adds on all the bloat for devices, T-Mobile just needs to OK it. Also in order for our device to get an ICS update we need.....
2.3.4
2.3.5
This made little sense to me, but she explained some more information. Since this device isn't a global phone (Only TMOUS has the MT4GS). It wasn't included in the 1st batch of updates. But there IS a second batch of updates coming out, and our device might be in that update list.
But here is the really weird thing. Our device is consider similar to these devices
Desire HD
Desire Z
Desire S
Incredible 2
Incredible S
Inspire 4G
myTouch 4G
(Also the list of supported devices for Virtuous Multi device projects.)
Many of these devices where on the list to be considered for an ICS Update, also known as the "2nd Batch". But the one thing that just baffled me is that our device is consider an older device. It's in the category of these device.
But our device has high end specs? How does any of this make Sense? It only explains one thing. Why we haven't had an official confirmation, or decline for an ICS update.
So what can we do? It's so simple

Great job, that was a lot of hard work, and sounds like you got back to the basic roots of hacking by practicing your skills at social engineering.
Posts like these really make me happy - you put a lot of effort into reaching a goal, and chose to view hindrances along the way as challenges opposed to dead ends.

Thanks for the effort! Also, for not making the signature goal unrealistic. That has been the problem in the past with many petitions... anyways, I will try and get a few people to sign also. Keep up the good work, dude!

Interesting. The one comment I always wanted to make was to counter one reason people thought ICS didn't support hard keyboards. My Droid 4 has both.

Thanks, AgentCherryColla.
Hopefully this gets pushed through. I always hated how the MyTouch 4g Slide was held away but yet it's a T-Mobile higher ended phone.
The only things I care about if this OTA goes through are the battery life, smoothness of rom and system, and simplicity.
Thanks again for the news.

Out of the last 4 HTC phones i have had there was always an issue with HTC not wanting to do this or that. I really appreciate the effort put in to force them to give us what we want and deserve, but 4 phones later im still having to hit them over the head. This is also my last HTC device, i will sign just so there is one more signature but the company all together has dropped the ball on Android and they no longer hold the top of the market. Its so bad and i hate HTC with such a passion im ready to trade this thing for any samsung i can get my hands on, id prolly take the original galaxy right about now, this phone has been a dissapointment since day 1 and i regret spending 300 on it. Im glad i didnt take care of it, the cosmetics now match the rest of the os, torn and abused! Anyways im done ranting now.

Even though I've moved onto a galaxy nexus and given the slide to the girl, I've signed. I'm not buying another HTC device ( and I've had 6 going back to the winmo days) until they start properly supporting what they sell.

I'm getting a GSIII/II/Note. What ever T-Mobile gives me when I start working there Xo

Got a TBolt off ebay....but it's an unbranded developer's phone!?

So, I got 2 TBolts off ebay with cracked screens for $245 (total, for the pair). Figured it was a good buy since I could replace the screens myself for fairly cheap, then sell one and keep one. I get them, and I notice that there's no VZW branding anywhere on one of the phones. I boot it into bootloader and it says "S-Off", whereas the VZW branded on says "S-On". Did some quick googling for "unbranded thunderbolt" and read this
(damn, ca't post links. Google for "unbranded thunderbolt" and click the first link to see pictures of the bootloader and phone that I'm referencing)
The bootloader screen pretty much matches what it says there.
So, here's my question...is this phone an extra-special one that I shouldn't mess with? Should I not replace the digitizer/screen with one that has a VZW brand on it? Should I resell it? I'm not a developer, so perhaps it better served in the hands of a developer? I'm really not sure what I should do with it, but I figure that you guys might have an idea.
(looooong time lurker [since WM 6.1] first time poster)
what is the hboot number? if it is 1.04.2000 eng s-off then prolly it is a device that someone has previously rooted. if the hboot is the 0.95.0000 the it prolly is an unbrnaded test phone.
its kinda neat to have foound such a thing, maybe worth some searching to see if all 0.95s were s-off,or just some. if only some came that way,id try and find a way to pull the hboot image off the phone so youd have it to put back if you ever wanted to.
if all 0.95s were s-off,maybe its not such a big deal.
at any rate, theres really not much special about it other than that, and its not worth any extra $$. id fix it and take advantage of the s-off to flash shadomites permanent patched hboot, wich is all around better.
the 0.95 is not an engineering hboot, just an unlocked phone used by pr-release testers.
The only other thing I could think of is it has some cool development/debugging apps on it if it is in fact a pre-release phone. Although I think a few of our devs already had their hands on some pre production test units before the phone was released. So it might be a kinda moot point now but don't take my word for it LOL.

I'll put up some pics when I get back in town on Sunday. Everything looked different about it, even theone MEID didn't match a 'normal' vzw one...although trying to make a call let to a vzw message saying that the call could not be completed.
More info in a few days! This thing has me very curious....
Interesting find if true
curious if verizon will give you a 4g sim for it. Though not sure why they wouldn't.
Not back to my place yet, but I did pull out the SIM tray when I was looking at it on friday....and there was a SIM already in there. Completely unbranded. No VZW or other markings on it.

I also noticed a "Tell HTC" options under the "About Phone" part of the settings. Here's a pic
(unbranded on left, VZW one on right)
(sorry about the sideways-ness)
Also, neither one of them have active accounts, yet the unbranded one still shows a 1X connection and can (slowly) browse the web. Weird...
tell htc something lol
Didn't the phone have "with htcsense" on the info pages on best buy's old online advertisement and ces? Then changed to "with google"?

Q3 rollout though? It might as well not be coming out at all. I feel certain that sometime between now and Q3 I will not be able to resist picking up some stupidly powerful quadcore tegra3 (or similar) device which will have launched with ICS, and probably for a decent price.
It all leaves me imagining that Motorola only have a single solitary developer with a shoestring budget tasked with putting out the software upgrades for their existing range of phones. Why else would it take so long?
Anyway, looks like our own wonderful development community is the place to pin our hopes for some kind of ICS goodness, within a reasonable time frame.

Not a big fan of the trombone. I mean, I respect it as an instrument, and the people who play it as musicians, but it would have been much more helpful if you had picked something like a cello (which I also like much more than the violin).

We'll get ICS WAYYYYYY before Q3. The dev are working on it as we speak the only thing stopping them is that they're missing the telephony.apk which we need in order to connect to a GSM network. Without it we have a really small tablet with ICS.
Since we know that there is ATLEAST 1 dev in Motorola working on it that means that there will be a working APK with any betas/alphas that get out into the wild. As soon as that happens you can bet jim or lfaber will jump on it and fisnish their ICS masterpiece and maybe make CM7 or CM9 with it.

That is exactly correct!!!
So everyone keep checking cheesecake, ALL servers at least once a day, that is how we will find an early version, as we did with 2.3.6 months before it was out officially. If we get that, then yes we can get CM9 working.
I might have CM7 out here by the weekend, at least that is what I am hoping, but it is still not ICS, it is the 2.3.6 version.
I know its not as fast as we'd prefer, but isnt it nice to hear SOMETHING official from Moto about this phone? We all have been in limbo, heard assumptions, conflicting rumors/"inside" info, so I like that we at least know the future of our device, officially.

Well, after trying every phone out there (including a brand new unlocked Galaxy Nexus (returned), SGSII, HTC Vivid, etc.) I can say without a doubt the A2 is the all-around best android phone out there for AT&T. I have come back to it everytime after finding the other phones were either cheaply built, couldn't hold a signal, couldn't obtain gps lock, or took crappy pics. While the A2 doesn't do any one thing extraordinarily better than other devices, the phone does everything well with good battery life and great screen to boot.
ICS will definitely make the A2 a keeper, especially if can finally unlock the bootloader for some custom kernel goodness
Q3 is July - September, when September comes expect an announcement about delays and when 2013 come expect your atrix 2 on ebay.

Google Running Home Testing

Google through some company named GfK, have sent me some random letter to my house saying I have been randomly chosen to participate in random testing concerning the way I use TV, Smart phones, Computers and tablets with benefits and a tiny little payout..They also included a REAL $2 bill as "incentive" I guess. They don't know that I own any of this so I assume they "maybe" would be sending me these things. (I already own 2 Xooms, A Kindle Fire, 2 laptops and 5 Android smartphones but how would they KNOW this?). Just kinda odd and random I guess.
Anyone else got one of these or can provide me with more details as to what it is? has anyone here ever done one of these and what is it? i'm uncomfortable with it because it was random. So I thought I'd ask my homies here on XDA.
I did Google and find this too. http://www.google.com/landing/screenwisepanel/

Not sure how one gets on these lists, but I have gotten letters like this from time to time for other tech companies (usually they come with a $5 bill, lol). They are legit but usually require more effort than their merger pay out is worth. You must track and report a lot of info (sometimes you even allow them to do the tracking via certain devices), giving out a lot of private data in the process and spending a bit of time to do it. I usually pocket the $5 (in this case apparently its $2) and move on with my life.

I've been thinking about this for a while now. I'm keeping my g2x until the new nexus phones come out, and then sticking to pure nexus phones from Google. I'm sick of waiting for venders and carriers to work together for releases, and I'm sick of crap that carriers add to phones which is useless and slows them down. I normally root my phone and install CM on it anyway, but with the g2x even that isn't a 100% working solution anymore.
By the way, I read that Google is releasing up to 5 different nexus phones from different vendors around Thanksgiving this year. I'd wait for that!

Cool story bro, you have anything else to say? I'm not being a **** though why cause it has ICS now? Cause your g2x is a lemon?

No, in fact if you search up my previous post, my G2X, is one of the few that has zero flaws.
I'm jumping ship because the Sensation has more Dev support. (Really a lot of dev) They recently got official CM9.

When the new Nexus phones come out, I'll watch for a price break on the Galaxy Nexus and probably pick one up.
You are being a ****. In every thread I read you got some smart-ass remark. I bet you never eff-up,huh? gtfo;-)

I'm almost positive this was towards me, and well... ok. Maybe if people actually searched or didn't make retarded threads I wouldn't be, I help when help is needed (as in if someone searches and posts in an already created thread like these ones.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1449382
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342085
I searched for 10 seconds and found both of these. It's pointless to make a thread like this, especially with the OP's statement, does he want a cookie for wanting a sensation? Lastly OP my interest is not to stock what you have said in other threads, if you make a new thread make it worthwhile to read for the community, not something useless and informative.
Hey XDA I just had Chipotle, and added way too much Cholula to it.
If you're gonna jump ship, just do it.
The community for the G2x has been flawless, but I have seen the future, and I left it for the GS II. Man, they're a live one over there. Everyone's awesome and welcoming; a bit impatient at times when they ask for ROM updates (lol smh), but generally nice people.
Now all the devs here are a capable bunch, and they've managed to do what LG/T-Mobile/Nvidia couldn't do. I've said this time and time again. But without those 3 giving this phone even half of the effort, we suffer ultimately. In Driver support, Camera support, ICS support, annoying bugs going unfixed. The devs have to pick up all the slack, and that sucks. I left because of the circumstances that those 3 have put us in, and I'd say it's a fair assessment.
But if you're gonna jump ship, I suggest you don't do it for whoever gets ICS first. There's no way I would have gone to the Sensation, too many hoops to jump through, S-OFF, bootloader, etc. That phone's pretty thick too, not enough internal memory either (Nice camera though). Jump when you decide your time here has come to an end, when you have felt like you can enjoy this phone no longer, or if you feel you just need an upgrade/better spec'd phone. I believe those are valid reasons, as well as explanations that don't tick off the rest of the community. x) Cheers on your future smartphone endeavors!
ya i was on the same boat when the phone came out but meh there is a lot of things that i love about this brick lol but mind you the galaxy S3 is coming out so i might go out and buy one of those this summer
Just jump already
It all depends on what you want the phone to do for you... and what you are willing to do for the phone!

previously owned the sensation and I believe that the g2x is way smoother and feels better in the hands, though the dev community over there is rocking
Really? G2X feels better in the hand? I got to try it out at the store, been looking to get my hands on a sensation off craigslist for a good price, probably trade for my GS2.
I'm sentimental with my devices, also, have lots of back NANDROIDS of the G2X and need to get my data out of them before selling it. Actually thats the only reason I still hang on to my G2X. Too lazy to move my stuff out of it. I can, just don't feel like it.

I was frustrated with 2.20 OTA and not being able to unlock. I wrote HTC an email this is their response:

He doesn't say ATT but instead says "ALL" HTC devices, Some people may say I already knew this but for me at least this is the first time it has been posted "officially" not just word of mouth this came from an HTC technical support employee. So with what he wrote I am thinking end of this month or early Septmember, with the end of September beginning of October being the very latest an unlockable RUU whould be available on the HTC dev website.
This is good news as long as they follow through with it but if not I don't think I can keep my one X since its on 2.20 and there is no unlock support or root for it at the moment!
I thought you unlocked yours

That's quite interesting considering the other things we've been told about the handset and HTC's disclaimer on the Dev site. I'll believe it when I see it but it's at least good to know that *someone* over there feels it's a possibility.
Thanks for sharing!

I did but lost it due to a root method was trying. Had to replace my supercid so phone would appear stock. Method failed now stuck on 2.20 no root, etc lol
I'm going to remain skeptical. HTC's track record has been pretty bad since the G2

LMAO not the first time thats happened, learned to fight well in high school!
The more times I read that email the more I think HTC thinks you're talking about source code. 90-120 days is the timeframe for source code.
Yet another case of them not understanding the question.
They don't release RUU's on HTC Dev this is the main "gotcha" in the email for me.

Thats were the * indicates required hboot comes in at on the site

I trust at&t about as far as I can throw a shot put without steroids.
I'm somewhat surprised a new root method hasn't been found yet. I know people are working hard on it, but coming from a captivate it surprises me. Is this a product of android being more secure or htc getting better at security?

1.85 took a good bit of time, even with very dedicated people working on it. As time goes on, HTC keeps tightening up security even more, so it's no surprise that it gets harder.
Maybe we need a think tank thread.

My only concern if they dont officially support it, All new att devices have already began shipping with 2.20 its only a matter of time before the pre owned ones are upgraded also, this means if someone gets it new or has to get a replacement the probability that it will come with 1.85 ( last rootable version) is getting slimmer and slimmer. Maybe a bounty and think tank would light some fires lol.

It's been my opinion for a while now that without sanctioned boot loader unlock or s- off we're screwed. HTC has given us the iHox.

Screw em. If they don't ever release source/bootloader unlock/kernels, then screw em. This will be my last HTC device if they can't get their ducks in a row. Guess I'll have to move to Samsung *shudder*

I like the phone stock, honestly. Rooting this phone is only a matter of rebellion for me. Keep in mind thay the majority of people dont know what root even is. So the fact that they are doing what they are doing could just be out of spite or some under the table kind of agreement they have made with the carriers. HTC rooting and unlocking is stupid complicated despite one clicks compared to my old Nexus. I would love S-Off and some cool feautures and maybe some speed tweaks but if it doesnt happen then I got time to wait for the next big deal...not like they dont come out every six months.
