[Q] Acer Bootloader Lock Policy - Acer Iconia A700 and A510

Hi all,
Im thinking of buying the A210 (the little brother of the 510). However I'm never again going to buy a device which I can't root or which has a locked bootloader.
Since there is no specific info on the A210 yet, I'm wondering how root-friendly Acer as a company is, and if they allow unlocked bootloader with their newest devices. Using the search leads me to believe that unlocking on the A510 is only possible d/t an old firmware version, and not really intented by Acer.
Any comments appreciated, and my apologies if this should be the wrong section.
Thanks!

I think acer is not so strict with root and bootload unlock, don't worry.

I have been able to successfully unlock the bootloader on my up-to-date A510 using fastboot's oem-unlock feature, so I'd say it's definitely possible without any issues

Wow thanks guys this is really great - I had the impression that the Acers can only be unlocked by downgrading to older, non-locked firmware versions.
Your experience gives me hope that the A210 bootloader will also not be locked.

You can unlock the Bootloader of the A210 easy:
Code:
adb reboot-bootloader
fastboot oem unlock
and then do that what is shown on the Display. Use VOL - to selct und VOL + to confirm!

But no root or custom ROM available currently

[Q] Bootloader locked vs unlocked

I'm sorry but I have googled and searched here trying to get a clear answer, but I think it comes down to my lack of understanding.
What is the difference between the bootloader being locked vs unlocked and what does that mean for the development? I currently have the Acer Iconia and love it, but if there will be more/better development on the transformer I may switch.
I also want to try and figure this out as I have a Droid X and use the bootstrapper to load ROMS but again I do not have the understanding I think I need for this subject matter.
Thanks all for your work and contributions. XDA has taught me alot and I am trying to further my understanding so please forgive me if this is the wrong forum to ask this in.
Well i downloaded the latest update from asus and applied it to my tablet. I now can't use CWM on my SD, i could before.
There's three types out there right now:
Unlocked bootloader: You can flash whatever you want
Locked bootloader: It verifies a signature before flashing. Usually the signature check isn't all that hard to really defeat (the Thunderbolt's was defeated in somewhere around a day, IIRC).
The Droid X bootloader, on the other hand, is Encrypted, in addition to being Locked. This is the reason that you have to bootstrap custom roms, and can't just install them directly. Motorola is the only one that's using an Encrypted Bootloader, AFAIK.
Well i can help with the unlocking, I just need to know what to do.

Nop, Sony Ericsson also encrypt their bootloader in all 2010 Xperia Series

[Q] This device is unlocked asus

Hi all, new to the site.. I have been trying to find sites on google to help me understand better about unlocked tablets.
I recently bought an Asus TF300T transformer pad on ebay, the seller told me everything was in excellent condition except when the machine is powering up, there is a message in the corner that says ' Device is unlocked'. I started researching on this a little and Ive found that the asus tablet has its bootloader unlocked, and it leads to rooting.
I really have no desire to root, this will be a present to someone i care about. Unfortunately i cannot return the item as the seller has stated nonreturns are available. So my question is, if i happen to leave the bootloader unlocked, but not root at all, is there any longtime problem that will occur? Im worried about not being able to update to the latest software. Hope Im in the right place asking this question.

Ok, there is no long term issue with unlocked device. The pros: you can install custom rom/kernel to make your device runs faster. Cons, you will have to manually upgrade your firmware, the OTA update is no longer works for unlocked device. In short unlock without rooting or unlock with rooting have NO EFFECT on your device,

Hi buhohitr, thanks for giving me that answer. I also forgot to put this down but can the tablet, being unlocked that is without roooting, can it still download apps from google store without any problems? and will the apps run just as it would on a locked tablet? Thank you again for your previous answer, appreciate it.
As the other guys said, the only things that change are the lack of OTA updates, the manufacturers warranty is void due to the unlocking, and that the user can (whenever they feel like it) install a custom ROM.
Everything else remains exactly the same, like being able to use/download apps and stuff.

[Q] xt910 downgrade

Hi xdadevelpers team unfortunately i have installed an unoficial rom for my device from this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2069935 it works very good and no thing wrong with it but i have to send my phone to the Authorized agent here in egypt because of a problem at the sim card place in the phone so i need to get back to the official kernal which is ics is there any way to do this please help me
have you noticed, that this is the Razr HD section ?
And yes. MOAR fonts
Though you are indeed in the wrong forum, i'll help you out
There are 2 possibilities:
1. Your bootloader is unlocked:
Grab the appropriate Stock FW here: XT910 Stock Firmwares
And flash your phone according to this guide: http://www.andromods.com/tips-trick/how-to-restore-unroot-droid-razr-m-xt907-stock-original-firmware.html
Though the guide is for the xt907, it'll also work for xt910. As long as your BL is unlocked...
2. Your bootloader is locked and you're on safestrap:

And above all: Next time post your question here: Droid RAZR Q&A

What do you mean by saved cid? Is your phone carrier locked? Or what are you trying to say? You should pick a stock fw, which is at least your country/region better also from your carrier. It may also not be available at the site i mentioned.
If it is not available you could try and make a request. See the op of this thread
There is no such thing as an "unlocked bootloader" XT910 nor any other OMAP chipset Motorola device unless it is an engineering model with an NS bootloader.
There is no OEM unlock available for those devices and there never will be as the bootloader was never designed to be unlocked.
Motorola themselves have stated as much publicly.
This person has wiped their CID. partition in order to successfully flash a firmware from a different region onto his device.
He should seek advice in the proper forum fro those who have experience with this type of cross flashing issue.
It is precisely as a result of the locked bootloader status of these devices that these kinds of issues arise when users attempt to update their device with firmware not intended for their specific hardware or regional configuration.
Uh thanks for the heads up, wasn't aware of that. I assumed that motorola devices would be all similiar with this.

Response from Nokia on unlocking bootloader

I can't say I am surprised, but I thought I'd ask and see what they say. Here's an email and the response I received.
Me:
Hello, Before I order the 8, I'd like to know if you provide the means / process to unlock the bootloader for your devices. I typically run stock Android, which I know you provide, but occasionally like to run custom ROM's as well. An unlocked bootloader will allow flexibility, and providing the ability to unlock will gain you a following in the modding community. Thanks!
Nokia:
Regarding your inquiry about the bootloader unlock for the Nokia 8, please be informed that we may not provide this information.
Additionally, please note that unlocking the bootloader for the device will void the warranty and we therefore do not recommend it.
If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us again.
Best regards,
Nokia Mobile Care team
Now, I am really having a hard time coming up with a NEED for the bootloader to be unlocked... unless I need it to flash another region to add bands that aren't available on my device... maybe?

I wouldn't jump ship yet. Fact is, it still may be very easy to unlock the bootloader and gain root, as the device is runing bone stock Android. Frankly, there is not much left that I need root for.
For me, however, the 8 presents a specific problem. I live in the US, and the bands that are listed as supported are missing some LTE bands I really need (12 specifically). I am aware that there are ways to enable available bands for some devices, but I think you NEED an unlocked bl to get that done.
Thats likely a deal breaker for me. :crying:

Thanks for reassuring!
Just taught to have a little chat with support too...
Maybe there's still a way to flash TWRP without unlocking the bootloader. They did it for example on the Nokia 6 by booting into what they call 9008 port mode (EDL in other words) and flashed the recovery with a tool named MiFlash in that mode. (Link to Nokia 6 thread)

Hi all,
i found an option in Developer Options -> OEM unlocking ->allow the bootloader to be unlocked.
To get developer options tap 8 times "Build number" in About Phone section of settings.
I hope this is the right way for unlocking bootloader.

We already know that. Enabling that setting doesn't do anything.
anyone tried unlocking bootloader via fastboot?
before i get flamed for being a noob, yes i know you need to enter a code or something to unlock bootloaders unlike pixel/google phones.
no harm trying right?
Hmm. I know some devices in my past have not required an unlocked bootloader to allow root, but I'm not savvy enougb to figure out if its possible on this device.
And rooting will NOT void warranty in EU.

Hasn't a case like this have already been handled by a court. Consumer was right.

I could only get the 8 into Download mode and could not install it as a FastBoot device.
Sure sucks that they seemingly won't allow this. I was interested in a Nokia phone as well. HMD have even said they want their phones to be like the new Nexus. They really need to support the custom ROM community if so!
Ok so, I can get the device to boot into bootloader(download mode) and somekind of a recovery, trough ADB in windows.
But no luck on "fastboot oem unlock" command. --FAILED <remote : flashing unlock is not allowed

Hi Daniel,
Does unlocking bootloader violates the guarantee/warranty?
I just purchased Nokia 8 5 days ago.
Thanks.

If you are in the EU, no unlocking the bootloader does not void your warranty. It's protect under EU laws. Someone mentioned that in earlier posts. Unless you are in asia or some other parts of the world where they screw consumers in favor of big businesses.
and if you had read through, there is currently no way to unlock the bootloader on the nokia 8. If there was a way and devs are willing to move over to this beautiful device, i'd get it in a heartbeat.

Question [Q] Why do we need to unlock the bootloader before rooting?

hi! so i just bought my rog phone 5, coming from xperia z (yeah i know). so based on my experience using xperia phone, rooting doesnt require unlocked bootloader, right? or did i just forget it coz im using custom roms?
im just not ready to unlock the bootloader and I WANT ROOT. theres so many ads

AFAIK, unlocking bl is a prerequisite for rooting. Or else, the device wouldn't be able to execute 'fastboot flash' or 'fastboot boot' adb commands.
As for the ad issue, try 'dns.adguard.com' w/o quotes as private dns address (dns over tls).
because you need to modify the boot partition by flashing the patched boot. hence it has to be unlocked. otherwise you will not be able to flash the patched boot.
as simple as this.
By default, the bootloader only supports official signed images from the manufacturer. Since no engineering bootloader is available and we don't have the signing tools, the next best thing is to disable the restriction.
thanks everyone! this sure cleared things up. anyway is there a available custom rom? like cyanogenmod for phone 5?
