I wouldn't jump ship yet. Fact is, it still may be very easy to unlock the bootloader and gain root, as the device is runing bone stock Android. Frankly, there is not much left that I need root for.
For me, however, the 8 presents a specific problem. I live in the US, and the bands that are listed as supported are missing some LTE bands I really need (12 specifically). I am aware that there are ways to enable available bands for some devices, but I think you NEED an unlocked bl to get that done.
Thats likely a deal breaker for me. :crying:

Maybe there's still a way to flash TWRP without unlocking the bootloader. They did it for example on the Nokia 6 by booting into what they call 9008 port mode (EDL in other words) and flashed the recovery with a tool named MiFlash in that mode. (Link to Nokia 6 thread)

To get developer options tap 8 times "Build number" in About Phone section of settings.
I hope this is the right way for unlocking bootloader.

Hmm. I know some devices in my past have not required an unlocked bootloader to allow root, but I'm not savvy enougb to figure out if its possible on this device.
And rooting will NOT void warranty in EU.

I could only get the 8 into Download mode and could not install it as a FastBoot device.
Sure sucks that they seemingly won't allow this. I was interested in a Nokia phone as well. HMD have even said they want their phones to be like the new Nexus. They really need to support the custom ROM community if so!
Ok so, I can get the device to boot into bootloader(download mode) and somekind of a recovery, trough ADB in windows.
But no luck on "fastboot oem unlock" command. --FAILED <remote : flashing unlock is not allowed

If you are in the EU, no unlocking the bootloader does not void your warranty. It's protect under EU laws. Someone mentioned that in earlier posts. Unless you are in asia or some other parts of the world where they screw consumers in favor of big businesses.
and if you had read through, there is currently no way to unlock the bootloader on the nokia 8. If there was a way and devs are willing to move over to this beautiful device, i'd get it in a heartbeat.

Definately not.
Dev phones have always been rootable, i doubt that will change.
The phones that have trouble being rooted are always manufacture customized ones.

I'd bet that it will be rooted BEFORE!
The developer build on my Nexus One is already rooted. I don't imagine the release build will be any different from all of the previous OTAs.

You are correct.
Samsung never locked their (Android?) phones. Personally I've installed custom ROMs on the Galaxy Spica and international S and both came factory unlocked. Unlike with some of HTC's devices you can flash anything you want without using exploits.

Your right, as of now I don't think Samsung locked any of their phones, but the only thing Samsung has on this phone is the hardware aspect. All the software aspect is by Google.

It seems like you have carrier/sim lock and root confused. Just like nearly every phone on the market, they are locked. You will also need root to do anything that says "please root your phone". They do not ship this way...
I'm sure it will be rootable... Google doesn't want to block out developers

that's unlocked for carriers with gsm...that's not root. Simply meaning it will work with at&t or tmobile by changing the sim card. Root lets you edit system files and a custom recovery to flash roms
Lmao no one so far in this thread should get one of these developer phones as you plainly do not understand what you are doing here when it comes to deciding what the difference is between root permissions and unlocked to all networks.

This command unlocks your bootloader on the N1/N-S allowing you to flash custom roms, but visibly voids your warranty (bootloader screen shows that it's unlocked)

When the bootloader is unlocked there is a warning when you boot, but there's a solution published in these forums for how to revert to the normal Motorola boot screen. You can relock the bootloader but it doesn't restore the warranty as Motorola have a list of which phones have been unlocked.
However in Europe unlocking the bootloader does not invalidate your warranty, regardless of what Motorola might say. You also have an automatic 2-year warranty on all purchases.

To unlock Bootloader you have to submit "fastboot oem get_unlock_data" on Motorola's website and you'll get the unlock code. If you do so they have your device in their database. Secondary it is flagged in the device itself if i remember right.
ok but ive just spoken with motorola support in italy, they told me that if the phone had any software modification they wont provide anymore warranty
I know that to unlock sony phone you have to get from their website also a code, but that dont get you warranty off, in italy ive sent the phone in assistance and they didnt even check that database
anyway i hope there will be a way to root without losing warranty in near future, like for samsung flashing prerooted stock firmware

I'm not sure with this, but i think, in Europe you'll have full warrenty anyway on the Hardware as long as you did not destroy it by a software failure. So for e.g. if you unlock Bootloader only and your screen will be dead later which is not caused by a software modification you'll have full warrenty on the Hardware. But if it comes hard, it might be difficult to deliver a proper proof to Motorola that it is a manufacturers fault.

This is also written in their licence Agreement. I doubt that it is applicable to EU law in this way. But as i said i don't know for sure, I'm not a lawyer. They can write and say a lot if the day is long and of course they will not give you any legal advice which will be against their own terms.. If you ask them they will always answer what they want. Terms can sometimes be futile. Maybe you can ask in a lawyers Forum. Many more will be interested in that
EDIT: In Germany you have the Terms Gewährleistung und Garantie. It can be that the Gewährleistung will be lost because it is voluntary given to you by the vendor. But with my above mentioned Situation the Garantie will be still applicable as in aboves case, at least in Germany. But as i said I don't know for sure. This is what i read in the last weeks about this.

I have unlocked the bootloader and if a hardware fault occured I would ask Motorola to fix it, if they said no as my warranty is void (and refuse to fix it whatever I say) my only option is to then take to them court. Am I going to do that over a £160 phone - no Im not, I'll just buy a new phone as taking Motorola to court isnt something I fancy doing
I guess there may be other options, eg some sort of civil rights organization which helps with warranty issues which may or may not cost money, but even if its free its still going to cost a lot of my time.
I think if you unlock the bootloader you really want to acknowledge that the chances are that Motorola wont be fixing your phone, whether thats lawfully right or wrong may not be worth your time and money arguing over.
Personally I wouldnt blame Motorola for telling me that made my choice and now to live with it.
What I do think is a shame is that they dont officially release the stock images of the moto g as they do with their dev editions of some phones. After all that may remove a lot of support calls they get (and then refuse) from people that have screwed up their moto g's by unlocking and rooting etc.

Did you buy the phone from Motorola directly? Probably no.
Amazon, Tesco, Phones4you etc...
The warranty contract which is provided by EU law is not between you and the manufacturer (Motorola), but between you and the seller.
So if you have a hardware fault, you send/take the phone back to the seller. It's true that If they don't replace it right away, they'll probably send it to Motorola for repair anyways, and Motorola can say that your warranty is void.
But in this article this article they say:
"In case the seller refuses your right to repair or replace the device, you can sue him in a civil litigation and can report the incident to the national authority. In many European countries such action does not even require hiring a lawyer and is most of the time ensured by consumers associations."
Thanks for the info, its obvious to me now that I'd go to phones4u - just as I would return any faulty appliance to the seller. It would be interesting to see what happened if I ever had to do that, but i hope I don't have to.

Hey guys, I'm wondering if anyone has done this, or knows if it's possible to (after unlocking bootloader) flash the Google stock Pixel system image instead of the Verizon one? I'm assuming the hardware and firmware are identical, but am not sure and am not skilled enough (or at all) in code to know if its possible. I bought my phone through Verizon, only because nowhere else had stock. I use it on T-Mobile, but fear there may be some behind the scenes Verizon stuff going on that may hinder my phone on T-Mobile. I haven't experienced any issues yet, but with the Nov security update mentioning a specific fix for wifi calling in New Mexico only on the Verizon pixels, it makes me weary that there is more happening beneath the surface than I am aware of. Thanks for any and all help! Appreciate it.

I did yesterday, bought mine from Best Buy and I unlock the BL. Sideload the OTA yesterday and I used NDE63V that comes with new radio. oh I'm also on Tmobile

Interesting side note on this...
I went ahead and unlocked my bootloader and flashed Google's stock Pixel image. All went well, no problems... Until I tried to use Android Pay. It's telling me my software can't be verified. And I out of curiosity checked, and the "allow OEM unlocking" in developer options is still greyed out, and not selectable, even though my BL is unlocked. Hoping this doesn't mean that we can't take an OTA. Weird, I guess we'll have to wait and see when next month's security update comes out...

And the OEM unlock option appears to be dependent on device ID (imeid? Ccid?), And not the software. So don't relock it, and you're fine

One thing I just realized, is in Developer Options, its greyed out like I mentioned, but also says "Bootloader is already unlocked". Which I actually remember seeing on my Nexus 5x when the bootloader was unlocked. It's got me really curious about re locking the bootloader. Mainly cause I actually use Android Pay. Had no idea bootloader unlocks are actually tripping safety net now. Major bummer. If anyone has gone through this process with a Verizon pixel and has actually relocked their bootloader with no issues I'd certainly appreciate any info you have. Otherwise, I may have to dive in blind and hope for the best.
If you want to use Android pay, flash a custom kernel but don't root. Works for me.
Don't relock if you ever want to have it rooted, custom, etc. The unlock method isn't going to survive another security update.

Hypathetically, if I didn't want root or anything custom at all, do you think that relocking the bootloader could cause an issue while using the Stock Google image on a Verizon Pixel? I wish I had more knowledge on this, but I'm pretty in the dark on this stuff as of late... Thanks for your help!
Should be fine if all stock I think, just know that you may not be able to unlock later.

Contrary to what people are saying. You CAN relock your bootloader and then unlock it again later. However, keep in mind that at some point there will likely be an update that blocks the use of dePixel8 and you will no longer be able to unlock the bootloader unless someone writes another exploit.
I would like to find a way to permanently unlock VZW Pixels but until I get one from the Google Store to compare with my Verizon one I don't think I will make much progress.
Relocking your bootloader is as simple as running the "fastboot oem lock" command from the terminal window.
Lastly. If you want to relock the bootloader, make sure your phone is 100% stock image or you risk bricking the phone

This is exactly what I did, and I am curious as well... We'll see next month I guess, but I'm guessing it will take the OTA just fine. My wife has a Pixel from the Google store, and mine is from Verizon. I've compared everything (including booloaders) since flashing the Google store Pixel image, and every informational detail is identical. Not sure if there is some other place hidden to me that might indicate a difference, but I'm thinking that Verizon's Pixel is only different in its official software image... And, that may be it. Please don't take my word for it, I'm no developer, and know very little about any of this, but in my comparisons, they are identical now since flashing Googles official (Non Verizon, Non European) image.
Sidenote, I have yet to try this, but I'm thinking that since I am on Googles image, that if I re-lock my bootloader, that I WILL be able to unlock again after locking. I think Verizon used Googles "Allow OEM Unlocking" software toggle in developer options as the only method to actually keep people from unlocking the bootloader (again speculative), and now that I'm on Googles image, that software "block" should no longer be present, so I should in theory, be free to lock/unlock the same as Pixels purchased from the Google store... Again, I've got no proof, or actual skill to back this up, but it's a theory I have, and if I end up locking my BL again, I'll post what I find...

In the Verizon unlocking threads the people that tried relocking reported that they were unable to unlock again without depixel8, which is the same as how the Verizon phone typically works. Some people seem to have gotten into situations that could have been corrected with an unlocked bootloader, but because they had a locked bootloader that couldn't be unlocked using depixel8 they had no easy solution to get their phone working again at this time.

Some people seem to have gotten into situations that could have been corrected with an unlocked bootloader, but because they had a locked bootloader that couldn't be unlocked using depixel8 they had no easy solution to get their phone working again at this time.

I forget where, but I saw written or implied that the "checking for updates" screen about third of way through initial setup of first boot uses WiFi AND sim carrier data to install Verizon custom restrictions and settings that among other effects make depixel8 required.
Even on "non Verizon phones" (which you are saying use the same build images byte to byte?)... You have to either use a SIM card or wifi and google account to allow the developer options to enable OEM unlock.
My theory: In other words, if you don't allow via SIM and a network wifi or data connect, for Verizon to mark your phone, or another carrier, then the phone can not be unlocked. So carrier models may indeed be differentiated from current factory images AFTER boot and setup.
There is a post in Q&A of someone trying to unlock bootloader without loading into the device, not having luck. This is why oem unlock toggle is so important and why people are bricking from locked bootloaders that won't unlock (so no wipe and factory images cannot be flashed.)
Another thing to consider: SIM network lock will not be flashed over.

Just tried several times with honor support to get unlocked code before the so called deadline...they refused and said they will not be provided for phone from USA & Canada. Any thoughts about what is going on....

No I'm not, I'm in Europe, but it's still worth a try
I just got my code earlier today so it's still working.
Chris (developer for Honor us) said they are not blocking codes at all. In fact, he's still in talks with the uppers trying to reverse the decision. You can easily find him on FB if you'd like to personally reach out to

You guys are correct, support was wrong they are still providing unlock codes...now that I have a code where do I input this in the phone to make sure it is unlocked. I have not done this before...so I will not be flashing A ROM on this just yet!

If you don't know how to unlock bootloader or understand what comes with unlocking a bootloader, do some reading on other threads or do not attempt it at all you could break your phone.

This much I know...unlock now to preserve the option of a stable Rom sometime in the future after Honor stops supporting the phone...I hate this planned obsolescence which is all too common with Android...

Do we still get OTA updates after unlocking the bootloader?
I want to stick to EMUI until OTA updates are stopped officially.

You don't need to use it now unless you wish to switch to custom ROMs or gain root.
Just keep it until you're ready to make the change. It can be used to unlock and relock as many times as you want.
Unlocking will force a wipe.
There are no stable ROMs at the moment anyway, and I doubt there will still be oldschool ones in the future.
As soon as Oreo is out for your region you could unlock and switch to Treble ROMs, but they're not stable for our phone yet either. Kirin's are fiddly to work with when it comes to custom roms, even with Treble support. Stock is always the best option.
Keep your unlock code somewhere safe, since (like someone already said) you can use and reuse it however often you want, and really stay on stock as long as you can. It's of no use for you to unlock/root right now.

I'm seeing quite a few different "methods" or instructions for rooting. I just picked up my Oneplus 8 today with T-Mobile, it's on a payment plan if that matters for SIM unlock, etc.
What's the easiest method to rooting the device? I use Adguard and want it to run using the "root" method which is better, per their support (which is why I bought this phone). My current build (which reports up to date) is 10.5.10.IN55CB

You can only root after sim unlocking the device. After that you would apply for an unlock token from OnePlus, and after a week you'll be able to unlock the bootloader (which will wipe your data) and then you will be able to proceed with any of the root guides posted here.
There is a sim unlock thread in the guides section here, though the person offering the free service is heavily backlogged at the moment. You may have better luck asking TMobile on Twitter for a permanent unlock, though they are very stubborn.
Once your device has been permanently unlocked, you would toggle unlock bootloader in developer options, enter fastboot and enter a command (follow the OnePlus unlock bootloader guide somewhere on Google for this)

TMobile will officially unlock it after paying it off in full (and I think be on the network for x number of days) but there have been cases where they have unlocked the device prior to it being paid off, ultimately it depends on the representative you speak to

Look on our website there is someone who can SIM Unlock for you, without you having to pay off your phone first. From there you can request from One Plus to send you your unlock bin. This is how I went about it, I was up and running with an unlocked bootloader in 1 week. Might want to donate if possible:highfive:

Yeah he does get busy but he unlocked mine and my wife OnePlus 8 phones. Just be careful with outsiders and don't give them your IMEI number or any other sensitive info. Happy modding!
