Anyone got slow USB Transfer speeds? - HTC Sensation

I got myself a 16GB Class 10 sd card, and the direct transfer speeds are pretty good. I get up to 15MB/s. However, when I have it plugged in, it's a different story. I can't go higher than 1MB/s, sometimes it's as bad as just 500 kilobytes. Why is this? Does USB 2.0 suddenly suck?

I have had the same issue since flashing CM9. If I take the card out and put it directly in my laptop its back to normal speeds. Anyone know of a fix?

Ive noticed this a while back even on the Glacier. AOSP roms would have slower data transfer speeds compared to Sense roms. I have a ADATA 32GB c10 and average around 10-13MB in the card reader and on Sense roms, but average around 3-6MB on AOSP...sometimes as bad as 1MB as you said

I just left a Sense ROM and even Sense had the same bad transfer speeds. My Glacier is sitting in a corner doing nothing so I'll have to try that out. My Galaxy Tab 10.1 seems to transfer (with it's own cable) pretty quickly, so I think I might blame Android on this. Even worse, when the screen locks, the speed drops to a little over 300kb/s, or sometimes it just stalls

thats weird, Ive only experienced that problem with AOSP roms

I have this issue occasionally and it traces back to the USB host controller on the PC.
Fire up your device manager and see if you have any yellow warning triangles. Right click and disable, then re-enable. After doing this my transfer speeds via USB cable return back to normal

Interesting, I'll take a look at that the next time I'm in Windows.

I also have 32gb micro SD card class 10 , the transfer speed via USB is not more than 1mb/sec which is too slow for class 10
I use stock ROM ...please tell me a solution

I have found a work around by either 1) put the SD card in a different card reader or 2) boot my phone into recovery and transfer what I want over. Maybe that could help, it does for me at least.

[Q] Moving large fimes to SD thru USB

Why is it such a problem moving large files, such as roms, to the sd card from a pc thru usb. It will stop and say something about camera has stopped. I had to put my sd card in the wifes HTC tb to put the rom on the card and put it back in the SG3 to install a rom. Am I missing something?
Thanks, Mike
I have this issue too and hate it big time.
I have to move 200-300mb at a time now.
Moving more is like never gonna happen. Wish they'd fix this. Hate to have to buy a micro sd OTG USB adapter just to move files around.
Try different cables. I am constantly moving large files around with no issues. In fact it's faster than moving files from my hard drives on my cpu. 1gig from sd to cpu takes less than 30 seconds. Faster from external sd/running sd speed boost.
Sent from my VZW GS3 running Synergy/LeanKernel/Dark Horse Rises
Tried several, tried the one that came with the SG3, tried the one that came with the HTC TB, Tried a motorola. All with same result. Moving files off sd is no issue, just moving files onto sd from pc is problematic. Few songs at a time is no issue, but a ROM is not going to happen. Gets all the way done then states camera has stopped and will not go. I keep thinking I must have an option ticked incorrectly somewhere in the phone, but if it is, I can't find it.
Mike
Your in mtp mode, not camera mode correct? Loading onto sd is good for me, 800mb rom's load on I'm less than a min. Weird.
Sent from my VZW GS3 running Synergy/LeanKernel/Dark Horse Rises
Actuall no I was in (PTP) camera mode. I just saw move any files. That must be the issue. I saw the MPT and thought it was just for syncing audio and such. Will try when I get off work. Thats probably the problem I was looking for, Thanks.
Mike
I have the exact same problem (one I've never had with any other phone)
I was trying to copy blue-ray rips to my 64 gig sandisk card while the card was in the phone. I am using a brand new straight from the package cable that came with my second G3 (I have 2 phones). It starts to copy just fine, but quits 1/2 way thru & stops responding. every single time.
This is a brand new I7 PC that I just built a few weeks ago running Windows Seven Pro with 8 gigs of DDR3 RAM.
If I use a universal reader (even thru a USB HUB) the files copy just fine either from any of the three 2 terrabyte secondary hard drives or from the solid state boot drive to the card.

More than likely its as annoyingduck said, try mtp mode not ptp(camera). I think ptp is just optimized to do a 'camera' sync onto your computer. (for windows users, that annoying dialog box that pops up asking if you want to sync video, pictures, make a dvd, etc...)
I didn't realize I had the same problem as well. Awhile ago, I noticed that my data transfers would time out and I've only ever used camera mode. Thanks for the tip!

You could also give Airdroid a shot. It works over wifi so it's just a touch slower than the USB cable, but it's super solid and is wireless too!
No mention of manufacturer, class or capacity of sdcard?
Makes a huge difference.
Also make sure to be using an OEM usb cable from a major manufacturer. Knock off or cheapy dollar store cables just don't cut it for charging, let alone transfer...

I actually find it a shade faster than my pitiful USB 2.0 ports.
Takes about 5-10 minutes to xfer 700mb files on Airdroid. I think anyways, I'm guestimating from about 10 hours ago when I xferred a 700mb file. I wasn't on top of it but I'm pretty sure it finished closer to the 5 minute mark...
That fixed it, switched mode and tranfered a rom. First time it timed out, tried again and it went through fine. Was using the OEM cable with a 32 gb sd, not sure of class. I know its not a 10. Will take a look at Airdroid, thanks for that tip.
Thanks, Mike

I can take the card & stick it in my Rezounds & it loads fine, put it back in the G3 & nothing but problems so I gave up and use a card reader.

Your SD card likely isn't the problem

I was going to post this in response to a couple of people in the development sections but my post count is too low so I'll post it here instead.
The SD slot in this phone seems to have an issue with corrupting SD cards, I've had to format both my old and new SD card multiple times with this phone as it becomes unusable every few days. I'm not versed enough in hardware to know if this is a bad connection between the SD slot and the "motherboard" of the phone. I've seen a number of people have their SD cards go bad with this phone and I assume that means we had a manufacturing issue. It would be really cool if a hardware hacker experiencing this issue could take a look inside and confirm whether or not the hardware is connected correctly.
Well, perhaps there's a high number of bad readers....
I've had the same card in my Q since the day I got it (mid-September), no issues.
Mine wouldn't read the day I swapped up from My Epic 4g Touch to This phone, So I popped in an sd reader backed up my data then let the Moto format it, no issues sence
Curious to know what class of card you guys are running. I've been running a Patriot class 10 but my previous was a class 4 without branding that came with my old Transform.
I'm really hoping that I just had my old SD card die at a bad time and that my newer SD card was just sent bad. Today I couldn't get the card to read from the SD slot in my computer, and it would not be cool if my phone caused it to become that way.

Class 10 Maxell
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2074251
No issues here. I tossed the crappy class 2/4 that shipped with my Epic long ago.
Well I found an extra class 4, 2 GB SD card lying around the house when I was cleaning today. It may be that the local shipment of phones was bad, so if this SD card goes on me then I'll try exchanging the phone in another town just to be safe.
Just out of curiosity does anyone know whether Sprint orders enough phones for replacements with their original shipments? I'm not from a very large town so I'd imagine they would keep replacing with phones from the same batch.
I've got a Samsung 32GB class 10 mSD.
Nearly everytime I reboot my Photon Q it says "SD Card is damaged".
Go into settings, Mount SD Card once or twice and it works.
I've read, that other Android Devices have also problems with that size of SD Cards. (Google)
I had also problem in recovery restoring a backup, the restore process didn't went correctly
(said that everything was fine), had to use my 2GB mSD, which worked nicely and the backup also.
So I think it's an android/kernel issue than a hardware issue.
I have noticed that I get the corrupt sdcard error everytime I try to use the "mass storage" or "media device" setting with Windows.
I use Ubuntu 99% of the time and leave it connected in "camera" mode, have never had that pop up like that...
I usually just use ADB to copy everything anyway so I do not miss the "mass storage" mode at all.
Just had a 16gb class 10 microcenter branded card go belly up on me. Phone just all of a sudden said it was removed and now nothing seems to recognize the thing. The mount option is completely greyed out, and does the same on my note 10.1 if i pop it in there.
When your cards have gone did they completely disappear and refuse to read?

I wonder if it's the c10 cards...
You guys really shouldn't be using high class cards in a phone - there's really no benefit, as phones use SD card's very differently from camcorders or cameras...
On my ooooold phone, anything above Class6 was bad juju. I have always had class4 or lower cards, no fried cards (yet... lol)
kinda what I am feeling too. Not sure what class card I have but it was just a cheap 32gb from wallmart... Only had that error pop up once with this one though, and that was after trying to use usb storage.

Class 10 shouldn't make a difference to a device. The class/speed only comes in to play when transferring data from/to a computer, which will be faster on Class 10 vs Class 4 or 6.

As best as I can tell, thats a negative. Ive been running with a 32GB class 10 since around when the phone was released, and Ive had no issues. Quite surprising on its own, seeing as I abuse the poor thing. True that class 10 arnt useful for the phone specifically, but some shops only carry class 10 cards.
@hfase
I dont seem to have any issues with mass storage, with ~1GB written a day. Im quite curious as to why some people have this issue.

Maybe it's all down to the quality of the actual card itself?
Perhaps the cheaper no-name / off-name brands have a much higher failure rate....?
I'm not really sure, short of actual hardware issues on the device.
AW: Your SD card likely isn't the problem
Well here is my experience:
I am using a new san disk 32GB class10 micro sdcard. It was never format ed/ used before. The q itself formated the disk.
I have had no problems until using the twisted asanti prebuild
Version. Since then I only got problems with the qu saying the sdcard would be corrupt, after reboot. ( I expected some additional wired things, like the currents widget, which I deleted before reboot reappeared). So I would suggest it is an error in un mounting the sdcard before shutdown, which causes this failure.
Since I usually do not reboot the phone expect for flashing new roms, I had no trouble since then.
Hope this might help to further circle the problem, and maybe find a solution for this.

Since CM10 I haven't noticed any SD-Card issues, but I have the feeling, that there are some issues, which aren't detected.
In the last few days my CM10 was acting weird.
1. The gallery (together with the camera app, 2in1 app) disappeared in the App Drawer (was still in /system/app) and didn't appear again after overwriting gallery2.apk again.
2. The Google Weather App had a graphical issue, so I was sure, that there was a flash issue by restoring ASA14 and flashing CM10 (from SD-Card!).
I solved this issue in copying the nandroid backup and CM10 to the phone and flash it from there.
I have tested my SD-Card in my external cardreader, it had no issues in doing so.
My guess is, that the SD-Card needs more power than the Photon Q can give and is losing some read/write commands.

I've used better Samsung and Sandisk cards and have had this issue. It just randomly wipes all my data and creates the LOST.DIR with it all in there, but file names are all renamed and would takes years to sort through and try to figure out what is what. All my photos, music, etc.. were basically gone then. It didn't matter that the card was a name-brand or not. I've had the issue with several cards.
I constantly have this problem as well, and I've found that mounting the SD card with a reader or in another phone in a Linux environment fixes it for the most part. I think files still get lost, but you get most of what you had back.
I got a 32GB UHS1 card last week and it hasn't had a problem.

[Q] Can I make a reliable storage out of a cheap SD card?

Hi.
I bought a $8 Samsung knockoff 32GB micro SD card, class 10. It's acting weirdly, like if I use an usb adapter, and copy some files to it, when I put it back in my Lenovo P780, some of the files disappear or get corrupted... or when I test the writing speed on the phone it's 5-6 mbps, with the usb adapter I only can move files with 2-3 mbps, and when I copy files to the card by connecting the phone to my PC via the original cable, the writing speed is 500 kpbs tops (oddly enough, when I start the copying it starts at 4-5 mbps but then in seconds the speed decreases)
I have read many posts about it online, some said that I should try SD booster apps for android (they didn't work at all) or use the PC software Teracopy to copy files (didn't work) or format it using the HP formatting tool (took me 7 hours, but no luck with it neither) and I almost gave up. This is my last try. If anyone has a solution to magicly turn this thing's writing speed to at least 1 mbps, please, feel free to tell me.
PS: Please don't waste my time telling me "you should have bought an expensive SD card, blah blah..." because it's kinda obvious I don't have any money to spend on stuff like this.

File transfer extremely slow Z3

Hi, I recently bought an xperia z3 and also a class 10 micro sd card 32gb.
When I tried to copy some files it takes forever to copy them, also I can notice that file transfer rate goes between 0kb to 3.5mb approx.
I've tried to change transfer mode on USB options from MTP to XXX and there is no change.
My sd card is an: sanDisk 32gb micro sd hc class 10
I have windows 8.1. Also I installed (several times) just in case Sony PC Companion and the drivers that comes with the phone bus nothing.
Some times I got a window saying that the devise is busy and I can not copy some files.
Last thing, I bought it unlocked but when I turn it on it says T-Mobile.
I do not know what else to do, please help ME!

Did u format the card inside phone...? Try using other card.
I have sandisk ultra 32gb class 10 and it works fine.
Also about ur device its an unlocked device with t- mobile firmware...if u want u can always flash a generic firmare for your region...
And what do u mean by XXX it should be MSC right??mass storage connection..
And u don't need any specific drivers just the common usb drivers...may be ur card is faulty.. Check with other phone as u check other card with ur phone
Same here with Transcend MicroSDHC 32GB Class 10. My card was faulty. Formated it a few times through Windows, without success. Then tried another Class 4 card, no problems at all.
Sorry, XXX was a recordatory to replace with the other USB connection type...
I've already format the sd card over the phone but same result. Maybe fknpwned is right, maybe it's that card (class and brand).
The only thing left to test it is to try another similar sd card. :crying:

Same problem with my Strontium 466x Nitro 32GB SD card. The problem is not with the card. I tried it using Galaxy S5 and it gives me a transfer rate of about 25-35MBps. But when I use Z3, format it in the phone itself and try to copy stuff, it barely crosses the 6MBps mark. I'm on 23.0.1.A.5.77 firmware. Dumb Z3. How many more issues must I deal with?? Duh!!!

Z3 doesn't fully support strontium there is already discussion on the 64gb strontium... Most us using sandisk ultra here it works flawlessly...
Also dont forget s5 is an usb 3.0 device so don't compare usb copy speed as it will be faster compared to any usb 2.0 except apple's lighting port..and speed in your case is normal 5-6mbps is okay..fr usb 2.0..
I never use phone software to transfer files from my phone to pc or vice versa. Just open 2 "my computer" pages side by side & drag & drop the desired file. This works just as well for me on the z3 as it did on my symbian phone before. Very similar speed, i am using the same card in both, sandisc class 10

OK So basically S5 is way better than Z3 in data transfer?? That does suck TBH because Z3 was launched months after the S5
So what should I do if I want to get better transfer rates, say somewhere around the 30s ???
Kindly suggest a 64GB card. Mine is already full.

And try sandisk ultra 64 gb class 10 or sandisk ultra 128gb if u wany way more memory
Class 10 means write 10mb/s. And this condition accures only with big files, if you are copying small files write speed can drop to kb/s.
Just because of that i upgraded my 32gb class 10 sd card with 64gb samsung pro read 90, write 80. That was huge improvment. Dont expect too much from regular class 10 sdcards.

Not entirely true, it means a guaranteed minimum of 10MB/s transfer rate. So in reality any card faster than 10MB/s read and write.
I used to have the Sandisk Ultra, and was completely unimpressed by the performance ( you get what you pay for)
I have the Sandisk Pro Extreme, and in the phone I get around 40-50MB/s read and write, about twice as fast writing speed as most other microsd cards in phone. Note this is also the exact same speed as the internal memory so the limitation is clearly the interface (pipeline) the phone uses to access the memory.
As mentioned here earlier you will not get much faster than this due to the limitation of bandwidth with the USB 2 interface, if I am serious and want to transfer lots of larger files, I will remove the card and use a UDMA card reader which will give me around 90MB/s write speed
No matter what usb I use the transfer rate remains same!
I thought buying a new usb drive which supports 3.0 function would increase the speed more than 2.0 usb drives. But that didn't happened, no matter what kind of usb drive I use the problem remains the same. When I had this issue I used GS Richcopy 360 to solve it and the transfer speed was quite good. It has multi threaded file transfer ability meaning it can transfer multiple files at a time. Try it, it solved my problem, hope it solves yours too!

Slow transfer from PC to phone

Hi guys. I have a little bit problem with slow transfering to my new phone S7. Doesn't matter if that is (videos, music, pictures, documents etc. ) it is extremely slow. What I mean extremly ? For example, couple of videos with 1GB size takes 30 minutes. When I used my old xiaomi everything went fast without any problems. It doesn't matter whether I want to transfer it to my SD card or internal storage, still ****ty speed. Contrary if I want to transfer something from my phone to PC it is fast.
Im using USB 3.0 port on my notebook. I think the problem has to be somewhere in phone... maybe some kind of option that I haven't found yet. Who's know ?
Check your PC usb drivers and Samsung drivers are all current. No such thing as a turbo setting for usb transfer. Also, PC to phone transfer is slower than phone to pc transfer.
