[Q] Moving large fimes to SD thru USB - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Why is it such a problem moving large files, such as roms, to the sd card from a pc thru usb. It will stop and say something about camera has stopped. I had to put my sd card in the wifes HTC tb to put the rom on the card and put it back in the SG3 to install a rom. Am I missing something?
Thanks, Mike

I have this issue too and hate it big time.
I have to move 200-300mb at a time now.
Moving more is like never gonna happen. Wish they'd fix this. Hate to have to buy a micro sd OTG USB adapter just to move files around.

Try different cables. I am constantly moving large files around with no issues. In fact it's faster than moving files from my hard drives on my cpu. 1gig from sd to cpu takes less than 30 seconds. Faster from external sd/running sd speed boost.
Sent from my VZW GS3 running Synergy/LeanKernel/Dark Horse Rises

Tried several, tried the one that came with the SG3, tried the one that came with the HTC TB, Tried a motorola. All with same result. Moving files off sd is no issue, just moving files onto sd from pc is problematic. Few songs at a time is no issue, but a ROM is not going to happen. Gets all the way done then states camera has stopped and will not go. I keep thinking I must have an option ticked incorrectly somewhere in the phone, but if it is, I can't find it.
Mike

Your in mtp mode, not camera mode correct? Loading onto sd is good for me, 800mb rom's load on I'm less than a min. Weird.
Sent from my VZW GS3 running Synergy/LeanKernel/Dark Horse Rises

Actuall no I was in (PTP) camera mode. I just saw move any files. That must be the issue. I saw the MPT and thought it was just for syncing audio and such. Will try when I get off work. Thats probably the problem I was looking for, Thanks.
Mike

I have the exact same problem (one I've never had with any other phone)
I was trying to copy blue-ray rips to my 64 gig sandisk card while the card was in the phone. I am using a brand new straight from the package cable that came with my second G3 (I have 2 phones). It starts to copy just fine, but quits 1/2 way thru & stops responding. every single time.
This is a brand new I7 PC that I just built a few weeks ago running Windows Seven Pro with 8 gigs of DDR3 RAM.
If I use a universal reader (even thru a USB HUB) the files copy just fine either from any of the three 2 terrabyte secondary hard drives or from the solid state boot drive to the card.

More than likely its as annoyingduck said, try mtp mode not ptp(camera). I think ptp is just optimized to do a 'camera' sync onto your computer. (for windows users, that annoying dialog box that pops up asking if you want to sync video, pictures, make a dvd, etc...)

I didn't realize I had the same problem as well. Awhile ago, I noticed that my data transfers would time out and I've only ever used camera mode. Thanks for the tip!

You could also give Airdroid a shot. It works over wifi so it's just a touch slower than the USB cable, but it's super solid and is wireless too!

No mention of manufacturer, class or capacity of sdcard?
Makes a huge difference.
Also make sure to be using an OEM usb cable from a major manufacturer. Knock off or cheapy dollar store cables just don't cut it for charging, let alone transfer...

I actually find it a shade faster than my pitiful USB 2.0 ports.
Takes about 5-10 minutes to xfer 700mb files on Airdroid. I think anyways, I'm guestimating from about 10 hours ago when I xferred a 700mb file. I wasn't on top of it but I'm pretty sure it finished closer to the 5 minute mark...

That fixed it, switched mode and tranfered a rom. First time it timed out, tried again and it went through fine. Was using the OEM cable with a 32 gb sd, not sure of class. I know its not a 10. Will take a look at Airdroid, thanks for that tip.
Thanks, Mike

I like using samba wireless. It's free but requires root.

Sandisk (junk, I've had three burn up) class 10
I can take the card & stick it in my Rezounds & it loads fine, put it back in the G3 & nothing but problems so I gave up and use a card reader.

It might just be a naff uSD card. I've had a couple of cards fail totally (Nokia, Desire & Sensation). The general advice seems to be to buy a uSD card made by recognised manufacturer (e.g. SanDisk).
On the other hand you say: "after half an hour phone turned off". Was it a complete power off in the middle of playing the game ? If so it might be fair enough if it's part way through writing stuff to the uSD card.
Has it been the same situation each time prior to having the corruption ?

Hmm,
1) mostly for no reason, no idea.
2) forgot to safe eject from the PC. Well we know the possible reason for that.
3) probably the same issue as 2) just on the phone instead of the PC.
1 ?? Might just be a card on the threshold of failing.
2 & 3 are probably due to the fact that the device was still being written to when it was suddenly not there. FAT can be a bit sensitive like that.
Try to unmount your SD card, take it off phone then put it in again, reboot.
Hope this helps!
My wife's sensation did the same thing, I had to take out the SD and put it into my SD card reader on my laptop, format it and then put it back in the phone. The phone then wanted to format it again which it did and now it seems fine.
By the way, the data was intact when I put it in my SDcard reader. I was able to back up the data before I formatted it.
i say quickly buy another 16gig micro sd for $8.00!!!
im trying not to advertise here but this is a deal that cant be missed, and i have order from this site so i can vouch its a legit site too thats where i got my 32ig for 20 bucks

USB Hard Drive Problem

Hey guys,
When I plug in a USB Hard drive into my TF101, the "Preparing" message flashes for about half a second then disappears and I seem to have no way of accessing the hard drive.
USB memory sticks work fine though, I've tried 2 different hard drives, one portable, one external with it plugged into the wall, when I tried the portable I plugged the secondary hard drive usb connection into my laptop just to make sure there was enough power.
The hard drives do spin up though, any thoughts?
I'm using the newest Revolver ROM
Many thanks.
Restart your TF.
Microsoft windows has been around for over 20 years. Android for tablets have been around for about 6 months. If you want a perfect system, go get an ipad.
I think your tampon needs changing.
But hey! thanks for the tip!
and thanks for the condescension, you must be so proud.
clap clap.
Other than this problem I'm loving my tab, loving Android as well, it's not a huge issue, guess I'll just have to change roms.
I'd never get an iProduct, they're glorified, trendy, expensive and not very functional when compared to Android.
i dont know but i dont think my western digitial harddrive works with my transformer ever. it never worked and i figured that the tablet didnt output enough voltage for it. just my thought, im probably wrong if anyone out there is more knowledgeable than me.
I have a wd 1tb USB hard drive and works flawlessly with my current rom

Some stock versions can't read ntfs. Reformat to fat32. Or get the ipad.
Ahhh, that may explain why I couldn't access the music, photos and videos on my media drive (a 500 GB HDD that I took out of a laptop that crashed).
I thought it was the size of the drive (>64 GB)
With the ntfs issue, I am currently baffled. Some people have sworn that they got non-rooted stock and could read ntfs just fine. And some people have sworn that they got non-rooted stock and they can't read ntfs but when they reformatted to fat32 they could read them.
I've asked this many times and can't get a unified answer whether the stock can raed ntfs or not. For now, just assume yours can't and so you will have to reformat to fat32 in order to use it with your TF.

Anyone got slow USB Transfer speeds?

I got myself a 16GB Class 10 sd card, and the direct transfer speeds are pretty good. I get up to 15MB/s. However, when I have it plugged in, it's a different story. I can't go higher than 1MB/s, sometimes it's as bad as just 500 kilobytes. Why is this? Does USB 2.0 suddenly suck?
I have had the same issue since flashing CM9. If I take the card out and put it directly in my laptop its back to normal speeds. Anyone know of a fix?

Ive noticed this a while back even on the Glacier. AOSP roms would have slower data transfer speeds compared to Sense roms. I have a ADATA 32GB c10 and average around 10-13MB in the card reader and on Sense roms, but average around 3-6MB on AOSP...sometimes as bad as 1MB as you said

I just left a Sense ROM and even Sense had the same bad transfer speeds. My Glacier is sitting in a corner doing nothing so I'll have to try that out. My Galaxy Tab 10.1 seems to transfer (with it's own cable) pretty quickly, so I think I might blame Android on this. Even worse, when the screen locks, the speed drops to a little over 300kb/s, or sometimes it just stalls
thats weird, Ive only experienced that problem with AOSP roms
I have this issue occasionally and it traces back to the USB host controller on the PC.
Fire up your device manager and see if you have any yellow warning triangles. Right click and disable, then re-enable. After doing this my transfer speeds via USB cable return back to normal

I also have 32gb micro SD card class 10 , the transfer speed via USB is not more than 1mb/sec which is too slow for class 10
I use stock ROM ...please tell me a solution
I have found a work around by either 1) put the SD card in a different card reader or 2) boot my phone into recovery and transfer what I want over. Maybe that could help, it does for me at least.

USB OTG cable

Anyone know if it works on our device?
I went ahead and purchased one on Amazon for $2.00 and figured I'd try it out.
It should come in next week, but was just curious if anyone has tried it
I don't think so. It has to be enabled at the kernel level.

USB OTG is already way behind in the voting but if your really nice to jeff I bet he'll look into it as well.
Ahh I see I missed out on this.
Man to have a mass external drive for this device would have been sweet....
I cant agree more. Im hoping the new hack for my N4 evolves into a much easier method. Ive looked into a could mini otg cables to attach a 64gb flash drive that I can put music and such on.
Yeah, USB OTG is on my personal short list, but I haven't looked into it in a while. You can use 64 GB microSD cards in the SGS4G, at least the SanDisk ones I have tried. Also on my short list is moving /data to the card, between constantly running out of space and the time it takes to mount all the "move to SD" apps at boot.
But I can't use them on the nexus 4:sly:

What i meant was what about if you decide or feel the need to format your sd card....now you have to either put your back ups and song/movies on your computer or loose all and start over.
If you can put all your roms,mp3-mp4's,backups,titanium backup folder, ect. on a flashdrive and have the convienience of having all...right there at your fingertips without any concerns or computer,USB OTG would make life so much sweeter for flashaholics like me.

Having a weeeeird SD card issue.

Alright so I recently bought a 32gb sd card so I could put the rest of my music on my phone. And I transfered all my music on to it. Put it in my phone. And all of the sudden half of it is deleted? So I thought I was crazy and put it back in my laptop and sure enough half of it wasn't there. So I transferred the music again by selecting all the music instead of just moving the folder.. Waited till it was done. Checked to make sure it was all there and put it back in my phone.. Sure enough half of it has been deleted again. I'm on Embryo 6.5, I use player pro as my music player, and the card is a SanDisk 32gb.

Sounds like you're either trying to move too much at one time, or you have a bad card. The ROM is really irrelevant as you have been putting the SD directly into the computer.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk 2
I've moved a lot more to different storage devices and never had a problem. Like I said, it disappears when I put the card into the phone. I did it again and threw it in my tablet this time, and it all showed. It's definitely a phone issue. The card is fine.

Sounds like it's not rebuilding the database. Are you trying to read it with the player or with a file explorer?

Both. The music files are gone. It shows them gone when I put it back into my laptop also. As soon as the card goes in the phone, it deletes them for some reason.

Yep, sounds that way. There is a huge problem with counterfeit and sub-quality SD and Micro SD cards these days. It is so huge of a problem that many of the cards that are sold from Amazon, E-bay, and Brick-and-mortar stores are fakes. Its so hard to buy a legit SD card these days because the fake or altered cards are actually in OEM packaging or at least it looks very similar to OEM packaging. Many times defective cards or lower capacity / lower class cards are being physically altered to appear like more expensive cards. It seems to mostly be a problem with the class 10 cards. Sometimes people don't even know they are getting screwed because the cards usually work for the purpose that they use them for, but if checked (and some never do) the actually specs of the card fall way short. Many of these cards fail quickly as well. To add to the problem, certain phones "like" certain cards better than others. So one card may work well, and another card (same manufacturer, class, and capacity) doesn't work well at all. It's a crap shoot even if the card is good quality and legit. So, sometimes you just have to go through a few before you can get one that works well or just get lucky with buying one card that happens to work well. I purchased 2 cards that were counterfeit before I learned of the problem. Both were supposed to be 32 GB class 10 San disk cards and were marked as such. One was from Amazon and one was from Radio shack. I noticed a problem with both because while I was taking video in very fine mode, the phone would lock up when recording to SD card. Both fine and normal video modes worked and very fine video mode worked with no problem when saved to internal or when saved to another SD card I have (16 GB class 10 PNY). The problem was that both of the San disk cards were recording data at a rate that was too slow for very fine video and certainly way slower than a class 10 card. So, they were fake or altered to appear to be a better class card than they were. Just check Amazon reviews for most 32 GB class 10 cards (manufacturer doesn't matter) and you will see several benchmark reviews that show how bad these cards can be. Good luck, the best advice I can give is never trust an SD card with important info and ALWAYS back all data up...TWICE!
That's way when it comes to these things I always buy after I make sure I can return a defective item..
A bad sd card doesn't explain why it works fine in my tablet. Then music deletes when I throw it in my phone.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk 2
It was definitely Embryo. I switched to Rogers latest CM fix and everything is working fine now. All music is there, nothing is deleted randomly.
