constant data switching - HTC One S

Is this normal on the HTC one s?
My phone is switching from H to 3g to G. I don't know if its a phone display thing or if my phone is really toggling between the three. Anyways my battery has been terrible and I'm wondering if this is the cause...

I think yesterday I have seen the thread similar to yours. I do have the same thing, but only when my phone gets data to and from the phone. Normally it stays at 3G, but when checks for email or I surf the web, then it changes to H. Restart you phone and give it a couple of days, maybe your cell phone company has some data issues that it jumps. To make battery last 20 hours longer, I switch my phone to GSM only with Edge mobile data signal, but when I need faster internet, I just enable it again in the settings, under mobile data.

It will go to faster modes as needed when it uses data, and go to other modes like 3G and G when more idle to save battery. That said it should not switch between modes in a way that affects data speeds or stops transfers

Sprint TP uses 200-400mah w/ data conn, fast drain, defective?

I have a sprint touch pro, it was fine for the first day or so including active sync always connected.
Then I noticed it would get really warm and the battery was draining very fast, long story short but on a hard reset with only CMP battery monitor installed (which was not installed when the problem first presented itself) the unit uses between 0-100 mah normally but if I have activesync on always connected or even no active sync profile but manually enable the data connection it goes to 200-400 (average around 300 mah) causing it to heat up, super fast battery drain, etc.
One thing I noticed is that it is flipping between EVDO and 1x a lot too I am not sure if this is the cause?
I have several other phones (mougl, 6700 etc) all which would stay on EVDO without a problem here. Is it a defective unit?
Also to note my battery can train from about 100% to dead in a few hours when the data connection is active, vs day+ without.
I also am having a similar problem as the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2851168
where basically while in a strong evdo area it will rarely connect over evdo and if it does it generally will break the connection within a few minutes and default back to 1x. I think this may be the cause but it still doesn't explain why this is happening.
Mine seems to be having the same sort of issues, my battery, on average is only lasting me about 6-8 hours, I keep bluetooth and wifi turned off. I just got the phone less than a week ago, so it is seeing abnormally heavy use, but I'm really trying to make it last me a day and this isn't looking good so far.
Keeping background programs closed (except glight and gyrator)
Signal for this area is strong, 3g everywhere. I used to be on Helio (using Sprint's network), and my 3g signal never dropped. This phone, when sending a text message, the box switches to 1x, the text sends, then it goes back to Ev. It's the same for making calls. I'm not "dropping" 3g I guess, it's just switching off to make a cell transmission. Browsing sites or using data keeps it connected to 3g.
ROM version: 1.03.651.3
Radio version: 1.03.15F
Now, you think us Sprint Touch Pro users will possibly see a new ROM and Radio soon? I want to try reflashing the ROM, but don't know where to get another stock Sprint one, and I'm positive a GSM radio won't work.
If only the touch pro had 1/3 the following the Diamond seems to :/
Yea I don't think that its due to any programs, at this point I run a hard reset with nothing loaded but the battery monitor and no wifi/bt. As for sprint roms nuechem will be releasing a new rom tonight (see is blog at nuerom.com ) you can flash over.
I think the problem is related to the network however as in 3 different locations now as soon as I go to use a very good strength evdo signal it will drop to 1x for an unknown reason.

How can the battery be this bad?

I cannot go a full day without charging this thing twice. Even if i dont turn on wifi, gps, or BT.
Lastnight i had my phone charged to 100% by 12am when i went to sleep. By 7am when i woke up my phone was at 30% battery. The phone was unplugged and in standby the whole time. I didnt not get any incomming calls or sms. I only had the phone radio on, and no others except that i have it set to check for web email every 2 hours. I get great service in my house so i dont get it.
This is my 3rd battery and my second touch pro, and they were all this bad. How can this be? the f***ing thing uses 10% of its battery per hour in standby?
This is a problem
It could be a program running in the background that drains it. If you really want to know for sure, just master reset your phone and see if it drains.

hello, have you recently flashed your phone? have you tried a different radios, radios make a huge difference. is your data connection staying on all the time?
lupe
let the phone drain down completely and turn off before you plug it in. My Fuze was draining very fast when I got it. So I let it run down until it powered off.
I went 3 more days with my phone running on 4% battery. I think it was 96 hours or something. I took it off the charger at 8pm Wednesday and it died Friday around 9pm.
Since it has been pretty good. I noticed that when i am at work, with no signal... it'll eat my battery. My Samsung Blackjack and Epix didn't do this.
I'm using the stock radio btw
my stock battery was actually pretty good. it would easily go 24 hours with some texting, a call and internet browsing. i usually always have 3g off until i really need it. now i have the seidio 1500 mah battery and its even better.
try
new rom
new radio
extended battery
limiting 3g usage
Thanks for all the replys...
Im alittle confused by what you are saying about "new radios". How can you try new radios? Not a physical radio, right? is it a different driver for your wifi or something? kind of lost.
Also, when I first got the phone i stretched and set the memory in the battery. I charged completely without turning it on at first>then used the phone until it died completely (it wouldnt even turn on anymore)>then complete charge>complete death>complete charge>complete death.....So i did that three times. I think the battery is good.
How exactly do i turn off 3g? would that be the "data connection" in comm manager? I installed this comm edit that shows 10 icons in comm manager; there is a 3g switch but it always shows as off and when i click it it does nothing. Now the data connection seems to shut on an off at different times. Im assuming that is due to the 2 hour send and recieve or any mms that i get. How do i turn 3g on only when i want it? I do have an "EV" (Evdo) icon in my system bar even when the data is off.
What data goes through 3g? mms? browser (of course), send and recieve, Weather?
If I have my weather set to auto update, does it only do it when i go to my wheater tab? it seems that way. What about the web mail send and recieve, once its done does it shut the data back off?
Thanks for all the help, i hope im providing enough info.
I’m sorry for coming off as such a noob, it’s embarrassing; Mostly because im a friggen MCP who works in desktop support and has configured countless WM devices for exchange access.
I think my issue is that this is my first personal windows mobile device.
Thanks for humoring my noobisms.

A ROM package you flash onto your phone sometimes doesnt always only consist of an OS update (eg.: ROM) but sometimes comes with a "bios" update too, an update for the Radio-ROM (eg.: radio) which handles your phones connectivity deep down inside it.

3G means UMTS which is the fastest standard cellular network based data connection widely available today. Its the third generation of cellular data connectivity evolutions, hence 3G. The "data connection" button in your comm manager establishes or disconnects a data connection the device has, independent of what technology it uses, eg. 2G or 3G.
I installed this comm edit that shows 10 icons in comm manager; there is a 3g switch but it always shows as off and when i click it it does nothing.

You can edit the standard 6 button manager to show a 3G icon, several of the so called tweaking tools can do that.
Why it doesnt work on your specificly edited manager, I dont and cant know.

A "big" EV icon next to the signal bar means thats the technology available in your area right now and which your phone is using. So an EV plus two bars means mediocre EVDO connectivity possible. If you have a small EV above the signal bar, this means a data connection is open and active using EVDO. There is also G for GPRS, E for EDGE, 3G for UMTS, H for HSDPA and obviously EV for EVDO.

Think of it that way: what data goes through my network cable at work? Well, all data trying to reach the intranet, extranet or internet. So similarily all data at that moment goes over your currently open connection whatever program is its origin.
once its done does it shut the data back off?

After a horrendeously amount of time Windows Mobile caps the connection, I think. But you can for example use the Schaps Advanced Config Tools to set a much lower timer, mine for example is set to 3 minutes so an idle connection gets stopped after 3 minutes.
Back on topic:
I got my Raphael two days ago, I switched from an XPERIA X1 because the build quality got annoying. I'm quite shocked, the Touch Pro performs much worse than the X1 does or did. I'm aware of the battery size discrepancy, this is more some kind of a general statement as in "fuch the TP battery really DOES suck that much"...
I've noticed that turning the bluetooth off gives me a huge boost in battery life.
try new things
my battery was really bad ,until yesterday when i installed an app i shouldnt have made my touch pro go nuts so i had no more options but to do a hard reset, ive noticed a huge differance,i also do my email manually now and i unchecked allow incomming beams ive read that doing makes a diff i charged my phone last night at 10pm took it of charge it was 100% at time i hsvent charge it since its 9am now n ive been on web for 3 hrs now n still have 40% lol cant belive it this is on stock rom
Where can you buy 1500 mAh.. I couldn't find one on ebay either?
How bad does the 2500 +mAh looks like? Does anyone have a photo to show the working HTC Touch pro?

Constant network issues

I am on my 3rd device in 3 days. First one was rooted, second one was not. This current one is also not rooted as well.
Unless I am very unlucky, I am going to assume there is a definite issue with the network configuration on this device. Status says I have 3 bars of 4G coverage, however I cannot connect to the internet at all.
Network Signal Info says I am on UMTS with a -93DBM, data is connected. However nothing will load. If I put the phone into airplane mode and then turn airplane mode off the networking comes back online. Speeds are slow though, barely able to perform basic mobile web browsing and watching youtube and such isnt possible. Too slow an too long to buffer.
This doesn't only happen at my house, it happens in other areas as well but it does happen constantly at home. I a not a heavy data user on my account, 1-2GB monthly, so Tmo says they arent throttling me. They have replaced the SIM every time with the devices as well.
Suggestions? If I cannot figure this out soon I am going to cancel my service as I cannot pay for a service and phone that just doesnt work. Tmo seems stumped. They just keep replacing phones since I am within my 14 day return/exchange period.
However, 3 devices all having the same issues sure seems to either prove the phone has an issue, or m general area of Tmo service.
I live in downtown Tempe, AZ.
Your wifi works?
I have the same issue in my house... I have a weak signal and 4g drops down to 2g which is terrible.... 4g downloads are 3Mbps, but uploads are under 100kps
I changed the network mode to wcdma only which helps significantly. 4g drops, but quickly returns...
Give it a try...
I'm having the same issue here in Orlando. I've had 2 phones now (first one was just a bad unit) and both have had horrible network connectivity and reception. I take my SIM card out and put it in my 2 year old MT3G and it gets perfect reception and fast data transfers while the G2x is choking on network transfers.
Go complain here in LG forum. This is software issue.

have full bars but cant download anything. just sits at waiting for data connection.
We really need a baseband modem that works better. My bars goes to zero then to edge and then to 3g constantly. Any time it switches between the connections then the the bars goes to zero and it says there is no conection. Also noticed that 3g connection fluctuates very bad while doing a speed test.

I wonder if there is an issue with our network in Arizona?? I live in Chandler, and work in Scottsdale. my data times out ALLL THE TIME. Both here at home, and at work. Same with my text messaging. Literally, I do exactly what you do with the "airplane" mode. That's the only way to get my data and text working again (besides restarting).
Here are the issues I posted in the LG Forum:
http://www.lgforum.com/forum/boards/carriers/t-mobile/topics/few-issues-with-g2x#26861
(first issue posted is what you are talking about)
I dont think this is a regional issue. Downtown Minneapolis here, and I cant get it to stay on wifi or Edge/4g for more than a few minutes at a time. G1 has no trouble and shows strong 3g while my sisters mt4g shows full 4g. 4g/E symbol just flickers on my g2x leaving me with no connection. I can connect to wifi fine, but even with wifi sleep set to never it still disconnects every few minutes, and has to be toggled on/off to reconnect. Until toggling it just sits flickering 4g/E with no data connection.
I've never seen my Evo drop a E/4g/wifi connection and struggle to reconnect once in the year I've had it. My g2x does it almost every time I pick it up.
Did you try going into Mobile Networks in Settings and changing the mode to WCDA Preferred or something? That'll stop the flip flopping. That's what I have it on and that's what the phone came with out of the box. Also try Auto in that menu.

Network issue

Hi everyone
I have an issue, when I'm on my office the network signal isn't strong so when my One S go to "NO NETWORK" after it don't go back to network.
When the situation is this I can't go to airplane mode, change operator (from settings), the only thing that work is shut down and restart (no fastboot).
Anyone else have this problem?
Maybe is a software bug?
I have the Paul recovery and su
EDIT: More info
That don't happen every time that the phone go to "no network".
I think that happen when it a weak signals and are under 2G network.
there are users with similar issues, I only use 2G networks. If i want to do a bit of browsing i will manually change to auto mode, but other than that i always leave it at 2G..
hopefully there will be a radio upgrade soon that should fix this problem...
I'm suffering from the same behavior!
I'm still with the original ROM with no ROOT so I contacted HTC about it yesterday.
I got today their reply today:
"On your phone, kindly go to settings > mobile network > Network mode, kindly change the network mode and check how the signal will respond to each of them.
-Kindly try a different SIM card, to check whether the issue is with the SIM card or the phone itself.
- Soft reset for the device by pressing the power button for 10 seconds.( Note that soft reset erases any unsaved data.)
- Safe mode(which disables any 3rd party application which might be causing conflicts for your device.) for the device by Switching power on , then press and hold volume down when the quietly brilliant logo appears on your screen, you should see 'safe mode' text written on the bottom left of your home screen.
- Factory data reset, kindly backup your data before proceeding with this step please as you will
lose every data on the phone's memory.
Please go to Settings > storage > Factory data reset > Reset phone."
I haven't done anything yet and I didn't notice the 2G issue you mentioned.
I also haven't got this issue for the last 48 hours but did encountered it twice (!!!) on Sunday while driving across the country.
I'll try having the Network on 3G only and see if that matters although the area I leave in is not with good 3G reception.
GSM is 2G
WCDMA is 3G
i use GSM only unless im using the net
I'm aware to the 2G-3G difference
I'm on WCDMA preferred so my phone tries to be on 3G.
My phone also suffers from the 3G<->H data connection jumps while the desire wasn't having any with the same provider (different SIM of course).
sorry, My bad !!
i understand what your saying now
I cant confirm much as my provider doesnt have 3g signals in my area
If i try to use 3g at my home, I have 0 bars thats why i always use 2g
I switched to 3G only (since I have most of the time 3G and surly wants it for the data rate).
I know I have on my way to work and back places with 2G only but I'll give it a try for the coming days and reply.
BTW, just few minutes ago, while having 3G active for sure (before the 3G only switch when it was still on 3G preferred) I couldn't make any phone call although I had 4-5 bars and data connection was running.
Two days ago I tried to change my sim.
Before I had a cutted microsim, now an original microsim and the issue is still present.
Yesterday I had this problem only in afternoon, not in morning and only where the switch from no network -> 2G -> 3G is very very frequent.
In all other times out from office I never had this issue.
I also changed SIM with no help, stayed in 3G network only with no help and observed that when such a network crash happened, GPS reception is also disconnected!
I had no coverage situations with the 3G only mode which recovered, but what we are facing is a network "crash".
Our situation was escalated to technical support of HTC after I wrote them all the data and they tried to solve it over the emails w/o success.
Same problem for me. I tried only 2G, 2G/3G, only 3G, but no way..same problem..i hope an update can solve this..
I just bought my new One S from T-Mobile yesterday and everything appeared to be okay but now I can barely get it to hold a signal. Forget throwing it on GSM only because it will have signal for a whole few seconds before dropping it. I also am having Wi-Fi issues as well. It just intermittently drops the connection there as well... Not a great start!
whether im imagining this or not im not sure, But for me it seems like, When the Network signal increases, the WiFi signal drops, And when the WiFi signal Increases, the Network signal drops...
ive been noticing this for over a week now, So it cant just be coincidence..
I dont think my (or our) handset is faulty, I just think theres a pretty big bug in the ROM, and no matter if you switch ROMs they all use the same base at the moment..
This phone has great potential. But HTC need to be listening to us and release some updates. !!

I noticed the same exact issue last night. My phone will go to full signal before dropping whichever connection. I'm just glad this phone can handle staying on 4G without draining the battery like crazy although I can only imagine how much further it'd go with 2G.

that one is also a known bug.
On top of that, WiFi will sometimes stuck at "error" status with no ability to turn it on...
All probably related to the same network chip driver or "Radio"...
I have same network reception problem. When I am in a poor reception area it loose reception all of a sudden and takes a while before getting the signal back. I often toggle flight mode to force network detection. I also think the reception bars don't reflect reality; sometimes it seems I have good 3G reception but cannot surf the web. I fear it is a critical bug. The phone seems unable to handle correctly signal fluctuations and protocol changes (GSM, 3G, HSDPA).
I'm colletting more data about this problem.
First of all I don't have any wifi issue, or maybe I don't see this.
I have a modem with N standard and one with G standard and nothing of this have issue.
About the network issue in this days I never have, only when I'm in office and the signal suck a lot.
Q: Anyone that have Tmobile/mod rom with 1.70 RUU have this issue?

I don't have wifi issue at work with a powerful 802.11n network AP but experienced occasional fake/unstable/disconnect wifi at home with a poor AP which operates on no-one-knows-but-definitely-not-N network. I don't really bother too much cos I can always turn wifi off and on to reconnect.
In terms of 3G/H signal switching problem, yes, a bit annoy especially when playing online game on 3G but accessing internet is fine just need to sometimes wait a bit longer.
I am on international unbranded version in UK.
I've the same problem in France about 3G/2G and wifi on international unbranded version.

[Q] Edge and GPRS data connections abysmally slow on Moto G

I've been testing out the data speed connections with my Moto G on Tesco Mobile. When it is showing a HSDPA connection (H+) or UMTS (H, I think) or 3g (3G) data connection speeds are what I would expect.
But as soon as it drops to Edge (E) or GPRS (G) I get speeds so slow that practically no data is being passed - even with a full 4 bars of signal.
And I am well aware that Edge and GPRS are significantly slower than 3G and its superior data connections, but I'm talking less than 0.03Mbps speeds as measured by the Speedtest app. The speed is so slow that useful "out and about" apps like google maps refuse to recognise that there is an internet connection present.
I've raised this with the network and they say that for all of the cells that I've accessed data speeds shouldn't slow that much, and suggested it might be a faulty SIM (perhaps). But today on a different sim in another Moto G on a different network I experienced the same - Edge connection was connected, but practically non-existent.
Is this anyone else is experiencing, or am I just being really unlucky in the cells I am located in?
Thanks!
Matt

Yes, slow edge nd gprs sppeds experienced by you is possibly due to ur location....coz i get a decent edge speed as well as my friends too who r also using moto g.....So nothing is wrong in the phone it just depends uoon location....

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I don't think it is location as the problem seems to be consistent in every cell I am in. I've obtained a fresh sim from the network to see if that was the problem. Will post back with any further info!

Well....do u have any friend who is using Moto G and getting same problem at that place??And by the way, Here in india some operators give faster 3g speeds but 2g speed sucks...So just like that it could be the operator's prblm too....First confirm if any of ur friends are getting better edge or gprs speeds.....Thanx

On my old phones I was used to only use 2G (Edge or GPRS) networks in order to get one day of battery life. On my Windows Phone 7 device with an Edge connection it would sync emails, send and receive them and I could even browse (slowly) the internet.
On this one Edge is slow as ****. Furtunately H+ isnt that heavy on its battery as in order devices but when I get to places without a 3G connection the phone gets pretty much unusable, its a shame...

Interesting. For the full story:-
I have a Moto G with Virgin (MVNO in the UK using the EE network), and have had for about 5 months. Love it. Never had an issue with data speed on any of the "flavours" (obviously GPRS and Edge are slower, but useable as you say). I've just persuaded my wife to take a Moto G too, but she is on the TescoMobile network (MVNO in the UK using the O2 network). I obviously don't expect our experience with data speed to be identical, but she has only had the phone for a week or so and she reported to me last week that it seemed that data was turned off so she couldn't use maps when she was driving to get some travel time updates. When I looked at the phone at home, it was all fine - and at home both of us get H+ signals throughout most of the house (when wifi turned off). On playing a little more, I noticed that in one room of the house the signal dropped consistently to Edge, and when testing data speed there I noticed the slow (unusable) speed. I swapped the sim into my phone (which was a sim free purchase, so unlocked) and got the same issue. I've then subsequently tested data speeds when we've been out and about in different cell locations, and consistently when she is on Edge or GPRS the data drops off a cliff. HSDPA is always fine.
Then yesterday I was out and about just with my own phone in an Edge area, and I also got the same experience - unusable Edge data speeds (bear in mind this is now on my network, Virgin). Now, I've only had this once, but I am wondering if the 4.4.4 update has slowed Edge / GPRS performance, as the common factor across both my phone and my wife's is that they have only just been updated to 4.4.4
If no-one else here is experiencing the same, then clearly it is just local signal issues, but it does seem peculiar that both phones, on different networks and in different physical locations (up to 30 miles away) appear to be experiencing something similar.
Both phones are on 210.12.40.falcon_umts / 4.4.4
I've just found something to try. Won't be for everyone, but using the "hidden" phone menu via *#*#4636#*#* > phone information and setting preferred network type to "WCDMA only" I can at least force the phone to ONLY use a 3G connection. Whether that will leave me with no signal in areas where I'd like to have a signal I'll wait and see, but I could at least switch manually back to 2G if I found myself down a dark country lane with no 3G signal. Perhaps an option only for the tech-enthusiast, wouldn't want my wife to be relying on this if her car broke down in the wrong end of town!!
It may be a work around, but I can't possibly rely on that since being unreachable isn't acceptable for me.
Let me add that I experience these "issue" since I can remember, so definitely 4.4.4 wasn't the culprit...

There is an option "WCDMA preferred" which may (I know nothing about this!) set a preference for a stronger reliance on 3G services rather than 2G. It's very easy to set up and switch, worth a little experiment if you get into an area where you are suffering with a slow 2G service.
Changed it right now.
If I feel any difference I will leave the proper feedback.
Thanks
