[Q] Only 1GB on 8 GB SD card mounts

I have rooted my Nook Color (Blue Dot) with Clockwork, and CM7 Nightly install from 11-16-2011. I installed all the OS data on the internal memory in the Nook. I have a 8GB SD (Class 10) card that that I used to do the root, but now when I try to mount the SD to use to install apps to it, I can only get 1GB as SD Card and the rest mounts as /mnt/emmc. I can't seem to get it to mount the whole card as SD. I have tried using a partition manager on a Windows and Linux machine to partition it, but that did not work. Is there something that I am doing wrong? I want to be able to use the whole card mounted since I use apps and a 512 MB Swap file. One thing that I thought it may be is when I rooted the Nook I used the the 1GB image of Clockwork 3.2.0.1 since I could not find a 8GB image. The only 8GB image I could find was of CWM 3.0.2.8. I don't think that that would be the problem though. You guys have any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated. MODS, you can move this to the Android Forum if needed.

That is how CM roms mount the external SD cards.

So I won't be able to mount the card and run more than 1GB of apps from it? Or is there a way to mount it and run the apps from /mnt/emmc. Also, when I remove the SD card, the mount of the SD card at the top (the 1GB one) stays mounted...should it?

Yes the one that stays mounted is your internal storage system. If it only has a max of 1gb then that is all you can store on it. The only way to safely unmount the the internal storage is in recovery as it is not using it but it is not advised. You can find an app that will move apps to SD card and have some bigger apps on there but mind you widgets will not work if the app is on the SD card. Here is a screen shot of my device. The 1.3 gb is my phones on board storage and the 29.81 gb is my external 32 gb sd card.

Ok, thanks for the info. What app is that that you took a screen shot of, and off the top of your head, you know of any that will flip the apps to the SD card? If not I will research it, I am sure it can't be to hard to find one.

The app is android assistant and depending on your OS version apps2sd should work. I know never versions of the OS has the ability built in

Ok. I tried Link2SD, but it said it was moving it to the SD card, but it moved it to the 1GB mount not to the /mnt/emmc where I have the 7.5GB of free space. I will try the apps2SD and see if that works. Thanks a lot bud.

It maybe an issue how to CM roms mount the storage. I am not sure to be honest

Ok, no worries. I will continue working on it. if I find anything out I will post back. Thanks for your help.

I figured it out...
If you have the "Use internal storage" checked under CyanogemMod Settings/Application CM7 will mount the SD card as mnt/emmc and create a 1GB partition and mount it as mnt/SDCard. If you un-check it and then reboot, the SD Card will be mounted as mnt/SDCard and the internal partition will be mnt/emmc, allowing you to use the whole SD Card for storing apps, while still being able to store the apps on the main internal partition. I am glad I figured that out, now I can load more apps, and use the swap file.

Internal sdcard getting full

Curiously wondering why my internal sdcard is now saying I only have 5gb of storage space available.
I have a 32 GB Samsung galaxy s3 I have no music or pictures stored on my internal card. Seems like it all started when I went to a cm10 ROM then back to a touchwiz.
Maybe ther is a method I could use to format the internal storage and start from nothing?

Use DiskUsage to see what is using up your internal memory. You can use cwm or twrp to format internal memory.

I did find a 3gb movie that I had placed on the phone to watch. So based on disk usage. I have 16gb of system data and now 10gb free

Occasionally you might have to format your internal card if you switch flash many different roms as they tend to live "residuals" behind. Then there is the renaming of sd folders when you switched to aosp roms

If I decide to format the internal sdcard is it simple, reformat, reflash ROM backup? Or should I set everything back to stock first?

Make sure you manually back up all your data(pics, documents, music, files, etc.) that you want to keep. Then format internal memory. I would remove the external sd card to be on the safe side.
I am not sure about restoring rom backup. When I do format my internal card, I usually end up flashing a new rom (with the whole wipe data, cache, and system procedure).
Hopefully someone else can answer that question about restoring rom backup.

Did you backup your system ie nandroid with cwm or something like titanium bu? Hoe many times did you do if you did? Which back up utility are you using?
And download Storage Anlyser from play its the BEST way to find the big files.

Always wipe.

I've not formated the internal card yet, when I do new ROMs I only factory reset phone, cache, delvik then install new ROM.
My method of backing up my apps is by using my backup pro, but I do keep backups of my ROMs just by booting into cwm then backing up.
I want to format the internal card, but that's something I've never did. Which makes me worry about losing needed phone drivers.. Etc.
Also I'm not sure if I'll lose root or my recovery.

You will not lose root, recovery, or drivers, It is basically formatting your micro sd card, but instead it is your internal "sd card."
You will definitely need to manually backup the data you want to keep from your internal memory, either by connecting to a computer and copying to your computer or by copying them to the micro sd card.

I have a Nexus5 and I'm taking the plunge on buying this for my girlfriend for cheap...
The question is, it has 16GB advertised as ROM, but out of that, how much is REALLY user available?
For example, I had a Microtek phone which had 8 GB rom, but it was partitioned into system, internal and phone
system had like 2GB, phone had 5GB available for photo storage and stuff, and 1GB for apps... which was really a hit in the nuts.
Is it the same with this Motorola phone? I read somewhere it says 16GB but only 12 User avaiable
out of those 12, are they all real for app installations?
What I want to avoid is installing two games and having an "insufficient memory" window
please help!

Can you just go into Storage settings and tell me how much memory does it read for Internal Storage and if there's another partition named Phone Storage? or if Internal Storage is the only partition? (other than the SD card), can you switch between SD card and internal for app installation?

Available 11.25GB
Apps (app data & media content) 270MB
....
There's no Phone Storage folder.

That depends on your rom. If you're on JB stock, KK rooted or Lollipop, you'll surely have the choice between SD card and Internal Storage.

[Q] internal storage question

I recently update my phone (SPHL710) S3 with ND8 and flashed a clockwork mod recovery. I still had about a quarter of my internal storage left around 4gb. I updated to a newer recovery and did a backup to the ext. SD card. I looked again at the amount of space on the internal storage and it is about 1gb. So I did a clean dalvik cache but ti didn't help. I just am trying to figure out what would take up 3gb of space in such a short time frame.

Format as internal storage in Nougat?

I have searched for this but not really found any good answers. Most answers relate to marshmallow...
I bought a used phone and installed a memory card that came with it. Seems like it was formatted as internal. Shared internal storage shows up in settings but I'm not sure if that is the sd card or the actual internal storage.
Also in many apps and file managers either the internal storage doesn't show up or I'm not even sure which is which. In SD bench the SD card gets much faster result than internal memory which indicates that is the internal memory.
All of this doesn't really matter perhaps but it's still annoying since I used to be able to know what was stored where. If someone could tell me more about this I would be grateful. Here are some questions...
It says in some guide about formatting as internal storage that the sd card then replaces the actual internal storage. Is that the same in nougat and what happens to the internal storage and is it even used? Apps can't be moved but they still seem to take up space in both storages.
It said in guides relating to marshmallow that the SD card becomes encrypted when formatted as internal storage. Does that happen after migrate data is chosen or before? I have not done that yet.
When flashing ROMs can files be read on the encrypted SD card from recovery? What happens after flashing and restoring to factory settings? If the SD card is encrypted and can't be read from recovery that would be a serious problem. So where should backup be stored and what SD card used when flashing?
I'm sorry if these are stupid questions but I'm new to formatting as internal storage. The card also was formatted that way when I got it and since then I've installed apps.

If you try to remove it, things go haywire. Your phone will throw errors until you are forced to factory reset it and you can't read the data on the SD card with any other device or the original phone once it's been factory reset.

What happens if the phone is flashed with a new ROM if the SD card is acting as internal storage? Then if the phone is factory reset the sd card wouldn't be able to be accessed?
How can I convert the card back to normal storage and is that possible without losing apps or factory reset?

I tried to format sd card as portable storage instead. After that I noticed it wasn't possible at all to use the sd card to install apps.
Moving apps to SD card isn't possible. So now there are only two options. Either format as internal storage or not being able to use the sd card to install apps.
But there are apparently downsides to using the sd card as internal storage. The phone uses the SD card more which puts more strain on it.
I'd also really like to know what happens after a new rom is flashed or after a reset from recovery? What apps are restored? Only what was in the internal storage? But what if the apps were on the shared internal memory?

I made a backup in TWRP. Then I formatted as internal storage again. Everything was working like it should...
Then I migrated data to SD card under storage in settings. Then I got problems. Apparently some files related to TWRP was moved from the internal storage to the sd card. At least the backup I made in recovery was.
When I entered recovery the language had first been changed to Chinese. Also the backup couldn't be found. When I tried to backup to the SD card it said "memory full" or something and couldn't be completed. It seems the sd card can't be accessed from recovery at all any longer.
Also when reboot the phone it first says shortly "sd card not found". So something has indeed changed. Seems like the SD card is only fully adopted after data is migrated. But how can I move it back to internal storage if I have to reformat the sd card again? Seems like the only accessible storage now is the card.
So what should I do? Couldn't anyone please help me to answer at least some of my latest questions?
How are flashing of roms and backups handled if adoptive storage is used? I guessed there could be problems and apparently there was. A thread offers solutions but that should only be necessary in marshmallow from what I've read.

Lots of people probably have questions about this but I've found few answers on the internet.

Having been through the same BS, all I can say is I have wasted time like yourself trying to understand why google have botched the handling of storage so bad in nougat.
From what I can make out all apps need to use a new api for permission to access external SD when used as portable storage, even though mines formatted as ext4, the native android FS.
Best work around I've found so far is the xposed module xinternalsd.
I still can't get it to properly use both as sperate drives.
There is a thread on here from the dev of the module
I'm going to wade through it to see if it's possible to not just redirect all data to the external SD but select different locations for different apps reliably.( when I've had both usable to apps, MTP can't access the files on external sd)
Update: this now works reliably with latest 4.8.
The packages.XML edits didn't seem to work either.
First non removable battery's, now they want to get rid of SD cards and headphone jacks so you buy the more expensive phone with less features.
Yeah, we need to slow down your phone because of the battery and stuff.

From searching around this is a common problem that was driving me nuts.
Even with xinternalsd it was still crap.
Mtp couldn't do anything with them unless used from recovery.
What was odd is it would work for days then all of a sudden, you need to delete or copy something, access denied.
