[Q] Only 1GB on 8 GB SD card mounts - General Questions and Answers

I have rooted my Nook Color (Blue Dot) with Clockwork, and CM7 Nightly install from 11-16-2011. I installed all the OS data on the internal memory in the Nook. I have a 8GB SD (Class 10) card that that I used to do the root, but now when I try to mount the SD to use to install apps to it, I can only get 1GB as SD Card and the rest mounts as /mnt/emmc. I can't seem to get it to mount the whole card as SD. I have tried using a partition manager on a Windows and Linux machine to partition it, but that did not work. Is there something that I am doing wrong? I want to be able to use the whole card mounted since I use apps and a 512 MB Swap file. One thing that I thought it may be is when I rooted the Nook I used the the 1GB image of Clockwork 3.2.0.1 since I could not find a 8GB image. The only 8GB image I could find was of CWM 3.0.2.8. I don't think that that would be the problem though. You guys have any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated. MODS, you can move this to the Android Forum if needed.

nevermind misread your q

That is how CM roms mount the external SD cards.

So I won't be able to mount the card and run more than 1GB of apps from it? Or is there a way to mount it and run the apps from /mnt/emmc. Also, when I remove the SD card, the mount of the SD card at the top (the 1GB one) stays mounted...should it?

Yes the one that stays mounted is your internal storage system. If it only has a max of 1gb then that is all you can store on it. The only way to safely unmount the the internal storage is in recovery as it is not using it but it is not advised. You can find an app that will move apps to SD card and have some bigger apps on there but mind you widgets will not work if the app is on the SD card. Here is a screen shot of my device. The 1.3 gb is my phones on board storage and the 29.81 gb is my external 32 gb sd card.

Ok, thanks for the info. What app is that that you took a screen shot of, and off the top of your head, you know of any that will flip the apps to the SD card? If not I will research it, I am sure it can't be to hard to find one.

The app is android assistant and depending on your OS version apps2sd should work. I know never versions of the OS has the ability built in

Ok. I tried Link2SD, but it said it was moving it to the SD card, but it moved it to the 1GB mount not to the /mnt/emmc where I have the 7.5GB of free space. I will try the apps2SD and see if that works. Thanks a lot bud.

Ok, no worries. I will continue working on it. if I find anything out I will post back. Thanks for your help.

I figured it out...
If you have the "Use internal storage" checked under CyanogemMod Settings/Application CM7 will mount the SD card as mnt/emmc and create a 1GB partition and mount it as mnt/SDCard. If you un-check it and then reboot, the SD Card will be mounted as mnt/SDCard and the internal partition will be mnt/emmc, allowing you to use the whole SD Card for storing apps, while still being able to store the apps on the main internal partition. I am glad I figured that out, now I can load more apps, and use the swap file.

[Q] G2x does not recognize internal memory

Hello all,
i just got myself a G2x .. rooted it installed CWM and flashed Eaglesblood 2.3.4 on it ... the problem i am having is that even though the phone shows 5.xx GB of memory on the phone when i launch an application like the Camera or anything else that puts anything on SD card it does not find the memory and refuses to work. any ideas?
-Bilal
While i havent tried EB 2.3.4, it is based on CM7 so I'm assuming it handles the internal/external sdcards the same way as CM7. The internal sdcard is mounted at /mnt/emmc and the external sdcard is mounted at /sdcard. There is a way to switch them around by switching the mount points. Search around and you should find it. I'm at work right now and the search feature on this mobile app sucks so I can't look it up.
The other/easier solution is to buy an external memory card.

or might he be confusing Internal Storage/Internal memory with an external SD card?
When looking at the numbers, you see x amount of phone memory available and 5.x amount of internal SD storage available...coming to around 8g. I bet he's confusing this for an external SD card.
i dont have a SD card inserted right now ... this is my internal memory ... i understand that
does that change anything ?

The way I understand it is that the G2X comes with 8GB of internal memory, divided into 2 partitions, and an empty slot for an external sdcard. There is a 1.xxGB partition for system use, and a 5.xxGB partition for user files (music, photos, videos, etc). The stock ROM considers this 5GB partition as the /sdcard, and if you insert an actual external card it is mounted within the sdcard directory as ./_ExternalSD.
CM7 (and I'm guessing EB 2.3.4 does as well since its based on CM7) mounts that 5GB partition as /mnt/emmc and the actual external memory card gets mounted to /sdcard. So if you dont have an actual sdcard inserted into the phone then your then your apps that rely on an sdcard won't have one to use.
The 2 solutions are to: 1) change the mount points of the external sdcard and the 5GB partition, or 2) insert an external memory card.
or i came up with option no 3... revert back to stock froyo 2.2.2 and this problem goes away .. will stay on this till i have my SD Card

Lol yea or that. If you want a good rom that utilizes the memory the same way as stock, try Ultimate G2X 1.0. Its rock solid and fast and has a great theme.

[Q] app get copied to external SD Card rather than internal SD Card

hi, im Geoff.
recently after flashing the stock 4.0.3 ICS firmware, flashing a old bootloader and using my own USB Jig and resetting
the flash counter for kernels, i finally flashed JellyBean 4.1.2 Original Firmware from Samsung. my mobile is Galaxy S2 i9100.
my problem is i recently bought a 16GB micro sd card and inserted it into my phone before i could install any app onto my phone.
then i installed few apps and games from the Google Play Store. then i noticed the external sd card have about 120 mb of used
memory. but i only had about 20 mb of data that i copied onto it that were certain zip files and nothing else. i noticed that when i install
any app, then go to applications and move to SD Card option [which previously copied apps to the internal SD Card/USB storage],
is now actually moving the apps to the External SD Card. So if I unmount the external SD Card or remove it, none of my installed apps appear.
My external SD Card is meant for songs and movies. I want my internal SD Card to store all my apps so that i can remove my External
SD Card when ever i want to and swap it or not use it at all.
I also removed the external SD Card and then installed a new app, then use the move app to SD Card option. I got a error message,
saying something like insufficient memory/space.
my doubt is, apps are trying to be moved to the internal sd card but because they cannot be moved, they are being copied to the
external sd card.
any help is appretiated. btw i have rooted my phone by doing the temporary update of CWM from the stock recovery using the update from
external card method. then i also installed SuperSU. so its rooted and i didn't have to flash a kernel to root.
[update] im gonna provide some new info here:
I have a Android folder in my Internal SD Card [sdcard0]
and ".android_secure" in my External SD Card [extSdCard]
/mnt contains
asec [software files stored on the internal memory/ not internal SD Card or sdcard0]
obb [empty]
secure/asec [software moved using move to sdcard option. these files get copied to the extSdCard and not the sdcard0]
.lfs
and the sdcard and extSdCard links.
If I remove my External SD Card and try to move apps to the Internal SD Card using the move to sdcard button in application settings,
I get the insufficient memory error.
Also when I use the move to SD Card button in Application Settings, it shows the file being moved to the USB Storage [which is supposed to be
the internal sd card or sdcard0], yet it actually is being copied into my external SD Card or extSdCard.
What apps/games?
A lot of app data is stored on SD card, whether the core files and executable are on the internal or not, so that may just be cache stuff etc... One way to check is to remove the SD card then try to run whichever apps, I am willing to bet they still run.

i use the move to sd card for most apps/games. apart from 1-2 apps that dont have that option, about 10 apps+games have the option to be moved to the SD Card. And i used that option. But I am positive they got copied to the External SD Card because after I remove the
External SD Card, all the apps disappear.
Also when i then try installing new apps to the phone and then try to move them again [without the external sd card in its slot],
i get the error message of insufficient space/memory.[i have 8GB+ empty space in the internal SD Card]
its really annoying me

Sounds like you have an option enabled in app settings to install all to SD, check your app settings in system settings.

I have gone through everything in settings. I cant find any option where I can actually select weather to install all to SD.
I appretiate you trying to help me out. I hope i find a solution to this problem.
Initailly I felt that it cound be some code causing the apps to move to the external sd card instead of the internal one. But after I got
the error message that I have insufficient space [with the external sd card removed ], even tho I have plenty of space, about 8GB+,
on the internal sd card...so I dont think this is due to any code somewhere pointing to install into the external SD card.
I read somewhere that when the internal sd card is full and no more apps can be installed, the new apps go to the external sd card by default.
Something like that is happening to me, except my internal sd card is fine.
I updated my first post with more info to help diagnose and solve the problem. ty to all trying to help me.

I would back up the stuff you want from SD and from your ROM (to your computer), then go to recovery, full wipe + cache + dalvik, then format external SD, then reboot into system, then restore what you want.

hey man ty for not giving up on me ive not been well and then got so busy recently....
i did what you asked. i even accidently wiped the system folder from cwm recovery. it went into a boot loop or whatever it is called.
i re-flashed the official samsung jellybean firmware 4.1.2 on my i9100. then again cleant delvic + cache +used data. yet the problem
persists.
i noticed that the android folder is being created in the internal sd card. but that android folder has very small amount of the app
files stored on it. the major chunk is in android_secure which is only being stord on the external sdcard.
when i go to mnt folder in root i see two folders named asec and secure.
1."asec" contains apps stored on internal memory [not internal sd card]
and 2. "secure" contains a "asec" folder which stores app stored on the external sdcard.
i believe somewhere the code which should point the android_secure folder to the internal sdcard is pointing to store apps on the
external sd card. perhaps you guys can show me how i can change the folder path of android secure. then it will behave like
default, the way is was meant to behave.
You might need to repartition your system.
I'll see else we can come up with later today, in the mean time, try to maybe use TWRP instead and a different ROM

when i click move to sdcard in the application settings/menu, it shows USB data filling up.
that USB data is supposed to be my USB drive or my Internal SD Card. And the external sdcard shows up
as 0 KB of data. But actually the files are being copied to the external sdcard and not internal.
now if we think the android system cannot access the internal sdcard, then thats not the matter because
it creates a folder named Android in the internal sdcard and stores the app cache there.
So to me it seems that the android system is confused and actually thinks that the android_secure folder is
mounted on the internal sdcard while it actually is mounted on the external sdcard.
perhaps anyone can link me a guide to move my android_secure folder...

[Q] How to use link2sd?

Hi All,
I have a galaxy s2 plus (gt-i9105p) with android version 4.1.2.
Because of the limited space on the internal sd card I thought it would be nice to have apps on an extra external sd card. But I haven't managed to do this so far, is it possible?
To use link2sd the app info says:
-The phone needs to be rooted.
-A second partition on your SD card is required
My phone is rooted, but I'm having problems creating a second partition on the ext. sd card. I tried the "MiniTool Partition Wizard". Because it didn't recognize the sd card (there is no letter assigned), I activated the usb mass storage option on the phone (via: app terminal emulator:su -> setprop persist.sys.usb.config mass_storage,adb -> reboot). This worked, so I created two partitions, one with fat32 (primary) and the other with ext2 (primary). Then windows explorer started to freeze up and the ext sd card was no longer accessible. On the phone it said "damaged sd card." I reformated it and so I'm back to where I was.
Also partitioning via de CWM is not working. It doesn't seem to do a thing.
Any help to get link2sd working is appreciated.
Thanks,
Paul

It doesn't really move the apps to ext-sd(SD CARD)
I'm not sure but it moves the apps from the emulated storage to the system storage, correct me if i'm wrong

It moves only apk file with libs (or without) to mnt/asec and takes memory from extsdcard, but doesn't create any folders/files in it.

Try using the app called "Aparted" by Sylskat. I made an ext 4 with but I dont know what happened and it turned to ext 2, maybe my card doesnt support that kind of storage. But the partition I created with it works. Also it has swap support, if you want

Extra space /data

Hi all,
since i had very low experience with android devices (i use an lg g2 for a few months only), i ended up buying my wife one of this although i knew it had only 4GB of space, i had 16GB SD Card i thought would do the trick... In like 2 days its out of space, /data is only 1GB so the phone is practically unusable! Is there a way to rebuild android on top of the SD Card, or even mounting /data in sd card or maybe extending /data to use Sd card also?
TKS!

A temporary fix would be to go to settings/ storage and set Preferred Install Location to SD Card. After that, go to settings/ apps - SD card tab. There you will find the list of movable apps. Just choose and tap Move to SD card in the App Info screen.
There are two ways to increase your internal memory
1) Use Link2SD Application and then move all apps from Internal storage to SD Card and uninstall unwanted System Apps
2) Partition your SD Card using CWM and make it as a Swap Partition, that would free some of your Internal Memory

TWRP partitioning external SD doesn't work (Unable to locate device to partition)

Hi,
since the internal storage of my 8GB Moto G3 is pretty small, I wanted to move apps to my external SD, but there is only a hand full of apps I can move.
So now I wanted to partition the external SD I have, but when I want to start the partitioning, it says "E: Unable to locate device to partition".
When I google for exactly this error message, I can't find any solution. I formatted the SD via the phone, I also formatted it via PC to FAT32 and exFAT and I formatted it via TWRP to exFAT and also to EXT3 and EXT4, none of these methods worked.
I also tried it with the MicroSD mounted and unmounted, made no difference.
Also can I make the external SD to the main storage for the phone, so all apps put their files on the SD card like Whatsapp, without symlinking every folder manually?
All apps won't move to the SD. I'm guessing that if the developer specifies internal, that's all you get. On the first soak you could force apps to external which I tried with mixed results. A few would work, some wouldn't. Even on the latest, some app's widgets won't work if the app is on external.

Having the same issue here, I have a brand new Santin 128gb and I want to partition it to my HTC One M9, I formatted it and then wanted to immediately partition it and then I am receiving the same error and cannot find anything else online.
Same problem here I've got a Lexar 32 GB Micro SD.
Same problem here, with twrp 2.8.2.0
