Stock vs. CyanogenMod (USB DACs) - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

This one is simple,
- CM10: FiiO E7 doesn't work
- Stock: FiiO E7 works perfect
Just a heads up for those of us who currently have and use external usb dac's (sound cards) with our SGS3s.

Thats weird. I work for a company that sells fiio products. I also offer tech support. Why doesnt it work?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app

No idea why but after plugging in the DAC there was absolutely zero activity. Not even the usual "usb device connected" message. It's as if the CM10 didn't have the drivers built in to handle the USB DACs. I wonder if there are any other devices running CM that could run the E7. As far as I know a stock SGS3 is the first android phone that actually supported the FiiO E7 right out of the box, which could mean that Samsung personally included the necessary drivers/libraries for that support.

Oh, ok so it's a CM issue. I misunderstood your first post. I personally like using the fiio E11 (Even though its not a usb DAC). It is my favorite amongst all the models I have. Mainly because i find it easier/quicker to use and adjust settings.. It helped a lot with my old HTC dinc because the volume on the audio out jack on that phone was horrible. Max volume on the phone and it wasn't loud at all! It was like having my ipod volume on the middle setting. The fiio amps changed that tremendously. I love the Fiio amps, they make music sound so amazing even with lower-end headphones. Whats your opinion the E7?
Do you have it directly connected to the SG3 via usb cable?
To be honest, i didnt realize such devices existed until recently, when I started working for a distributor.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app

I got myself an E7 mainly because of it's amazing DAC. The volume isn't an issue for me since my headphones are quite sensitive but quality, noise-free audio on the other hand is the biggest reason. I would have gone for the E17 which seems to provide a bit more cleaner output but apparently only E7 works with the SGS3. I've had many android-based phones and none of them come even close to the E7. E7 produces the best virtual noise-free quality audio. Even at the lowest volumes there are absolutely no artifacts (SGS3's internal DAC goes haywire with artifacts & glitches at the lowest volumes).
It's connected directly through an OTG usb cable. No power adapters, nothing. FiiO E7 has it's own battery but can charge from the phone if it's running low. Personally I disable charging over USB to isolate the DAC from the phone as possible in order to avoid any potential noise generated by the phone itself.
Overall, I'm very satisfied with E7. The best $71 I've ever spent. It's quite unfortunate that it doesn't work with CyanogenMod based ROMs just yet.

Have you reported the issue to the CM developers? It most likely may have something to do with the kernel. I havent actually tried to use the E7 via usb directly to the phone. I will try tonight, if i can find the right cables at my house.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app

I have an E7 also, and I REALLY wish it worked on CM10. I have scoured the web, but I'm still clueless on why it doesn't work, or how it even works on stock in the first place. The weird thing is that it seems like CM10 recognizes the E7 as a DAC, but doesn't do anything with it. When I run dmesg in BOTH stock and CM10, I get this:
<6>[ 8.753456] usb 1-1: new full speed USB device number 2 using msm_hsusb_host
<6>[ 8.834060] light_enable_store,new_value=1
<6>[ 8.909476] usb 1-1: New USB device found, idVendor=08bb, idProduct=2706
<6>[ 8.909507] usb 1-1: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0
<6>[ 8.909568] usb 1-1: Product: USB Audio DAC
<6>[ 8.909598] usb 1-1: Manufacturer: Burr-Brown from TI
<6>[ 8.932824] input: Burr-Brown from TI USB Audio DAC as /devices/platform/msm_hsusb_host/usb1/1-1/1-1:1.2/input/input14
yet it works in stock but not CM10

This is what it says on the fiio website:
<i>Ask: Can FiiO E7 or FiiO E17 work with Samsung Galaxy S3 via the USB interface? If yes , then how?
Answer: E7 can ,E17 can’t ,you can connect your Samsung Galaxy S3 through the micro USB interface and then connect to E7’ mini USB port ,and you need a OTG cable (mini usb to micro usb)to connect them together, finally E7 works. Taking about E17 connect with Samsung Galaxy S3 , the E17 shows lock at 16bit 48kHz, but there is no sound output with USB charge "on" or "off" ,as its working power is different from E7, we are sorry we now haven’t figured out a way to make them connect together become possible. Maybe you can pay attention to our following products, maybe E18 can, I’m sure someday you will find a product which can meet your needs, thanks.</i>

I seem to be having exact same problem. On stock OS my Galaxy S3 can handle Fiio E7 perfectly but after I flashed latest CM10 nightly it does not recognize the DAC at all...
It looks like a missing kernel module or driver or something like that, as far as I can see... was anybody able to find any solution? I have international version of Galaxy S3, not the Verizon one. I'm not sure what the difference is, in regards to this particular issue.

Same problem with AT&T Galaxy S3 for me.
Samsung based ROM's work.
AOSP based ROM's don't work.

->[Q] Tablet with digital audio out [tablet->optical(toslink or coax)cable->DAC]
Hello,
I've tried the search and couldn't find anything relating to my issue.
I need a portable device/music player that has the ability to stream digital audio to my DAC (digital to analog converter).
I would like to listen to my music in my car using this tablet/music player. I have a DAC/Signal prosessor which has both optical coax and toslink inputs to recieve the signal so either one is fine.
Here is the signal path explained once again:
tablet -> optical toslink or coax cable -> DAC -> any given audio system (In my case also car audio system)
Please help me choose a tablet or help me find a way to do this. I know that some tablets have hdmi out, but it gets a little too tricky to seperate the digital audio signal from hdmi port to spdif, am I right?
Any help is greatly appreciated,
-Tersi
Guys, I don't mean to be impatient but I thought this was the place to get some answers to my problem.
Is there a way to send digital audio via usb port? I think there are ways to convert digital audio from usb to spdif..
Or could there maybe be a docking station, that has a digital audio output?
Please share your knowlage of the tablet world!
I am also looking for this too! I want to use a tablet as a car pc and run the audio out of it digitally to prevent all noise and ground loop headaches.
Did anyone ever get anywhere with this. I'm looking to do the exact same thing and the HDMI converter kit I bought is useless so I'm looking for another go around.
ainol novo basic
I just received an ainol novo basic w/ ICS (mcbub.com from LA). It uses a MIPS processor so not all apps are 100% compatible, however I am able to use it as intended (music player). If you tether you can use pandora, slacker, etc.
I take the HDMI out into a monoprice 5557 (sorry no url)
HDMI converter which outputs toslink, analog, RCA.
I use this in a home application (110v), however they are low power and you can use it in a car.
Be careful you need the Ainol Basic because it has the HDMI output. The paladin (which I also have) does not.
I'm sure there are others but for $130 I doubt you will do better, especially because it's running ICS also.
I use RCA optical into my Fiio DAC (sounds better). Toslink works too.
Monoprice switch uses ~3W on 5V, the Ainol is powered by miniusb.
I'm sure you have an onboard DAC (Fiio is excellent tho), but if you dont I recommend it. It has issues w/ 5.1 audio tho, so only pass it stereo.
I haven't tested 5.1 sound on it, although the specs say it will pass it. Your DAC will probably be the issue.
HTH.
Is this the only tablet that can do that? I was also considering this. Doing digital to the back of the car and then running it to a powerful car audio system.
I am also looking for this tablet or solution to this problem. Anybody knows?

[test quest]Audio usb out, anyone?

According to the test on Galaxy s3:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1704379
it appear to be possible to stream audio from the micro usb of a phone...into something like fiio e7.
just curious, has anyone with our HOX LTE try this out on his/her phone to see if it has this capability?
I haven't used fiio e7, but I did use a MHL connector to connect via HDMI to a television.

[Q] P6800 7.7 NO USB audio PLEASE HELP !!!

Hi.I'm new in Android world.
I work on my car stereo project and it's in the middle and I stock with usb-audio out issue.
I have a Samsung tab 10.1 from local AT&T store and P6800 7.7(int.ver.) that I just bought to use as a head-unit in car.
When I connect 10.1 tab to DAC the power lights comes on, on DAC and HUB and it gives me audio out of USB (30pin) .
When I connect P6800 to DAC the power lights comes on, on DAC and HUB but i'm getting message warning "high power USB device connected... cannot access this device." and sound goes to internal speaker.but USB-HUB powered by external power supply.
Restarting with connected or disconnected HUB makes no difference, same result no sound via USB.
The 10.1 already came with ICS4.0.3 and 7.7 I updated via Kies to ICS4.0.4 and both support USB-Host.
I'm using 30pin -->USB-HUB OTG kit --> Behringer U-CONTROL UCA202 DAC.
Question is WTF is wrong?
Should I flash 7.7 to ICS4.1 or any other custom ROM?
Anyone ???
Thanks
Can u charge 10.1 with pc? In settings, go to dock option and check it, you must use the original dock, 3rd party accessories are no guarantee to work. Try flash custom roms but i doubt they will also cause ppl hardly succede with hdmi let alone dock sound, plus atm they still have problem with stable roms :|

Thanks for reply.
Yes it can charge from PC, even if it's says "Discharging" it's actually charging but slow.
Also I just tried to connect already powered HUB to 7.7 and it's doesn't give me warning about " Hi-power usb connected but can't access " anymore,
it looks like exact like it would 10.1 connected with green lights on DAC and HUB but sound plays internally no mater if dock opt. checked or unchecked .
I assume 4.0.3 vs 4.0.4 does not related to that issue as well as 3rd party accessories since it's works with 10.1.
Flashing custom ROM and loose some features is doesn't sounds right too.
Well they are 2 different devices, you cant say that. The softwares are different. I noticed you use the word hub. Try connect directly to the tab, and try different accessories. Its hard to compare different devices even though they share similarities. Perhaps compare 2 7.7 is better.
Or youcan send me the tab and i can have a look at it. Mine works perfectly
Sent from my GT-P6800 using xda app-developers app
What accessories do you use to connect your 7.7 to DAC?
I mean HUB or otg cable?
By the way usb flash drives and memory cards works fine with 7.7 via that usb HUB. I'll buy otg cable to see if it get me audio out.
Here is the HUB

Nope this rubbish won't work. Haizz. Wasted time with you when you insist on your mistakes. Hubs won't work ever. From 2.0 speed you get down to 1.1
Sent from my GT-P6800 using xda app-developers app
OK I got this OEM Samsung USB Connection Kit direct to DAC. DAC light is on,"USB connector connected" came up but same result.Only internal plays.
OK I GOT AUDIO OUT with "rubbish" usb-hub mentioning above but only when I use "USB AUDIO RECORDER PRO" app. So it's not hardware issue it's on software level.
How to make it happen with other apps without flashing? I need to make it work with any internet radio apps.
Ok it was purely luck. Otg are purely for connecting external devices to your tabs. It is not meant for connect your tabs to other devices. When you connect it to the PC you can see that it require driver for Samsung for the PC to recognize it. This tag does not have mass storage mode, it only has mtp and ptp mode. So the proper way for it to function as media storage is to connect it to the PC, or having a media player can function as the PC would, but I doubt there is such available. Maybe you cab try Ubuntu embedded? Again I don't recommend such measure. It is getting too complicated.
Or you can also build a media player with driver speicifically working with this tabs to specifically pick out the audio output from the USB
Or you can use the original dock and connect the audio route. It is much simpler
Or you can switch to apple devices, they are popular and get supported well.
And you can send the tab to me
Sorry buddy, you ran out of luck
Sent from my GT-P6800 using xda app-developers app
"build a media player with driver" OR "use the original dock" are not the options, and apple is not even under consideration.
Actually I do use original dock ,but it does not provide the options to get data of USB, it's for charging purposes only.
So I just removed that 30-pin connector and used one from USB-hub.
The only question is to find player that capable to send sound to USB.
ANYONE PLEASE?
God with this Guy. With the dock not only you get sound output but also HDMI. go snd buy the original one
Sent from my GT-P6800 using xda app-developers app
The original vehicle mounting dock has sliding 30pin to round connector adapter only and cable with usb to that connector is included.
so what hdmi you talking about? Unless you talking about different dock but I'm talking about this to be able to use it in car
No the stand dock on table, the car holder are just for holding and charging, if you want you can stick the desktop dock on car surface, or connect the car dock to the stand dock
Sent from my GT-P6800 using xda app-developers app
Yes I can but it does not give me USB-audio out anyway.
It's a driver issue.I can flash to custom ROM but still did not confirmed what ROM support USB-audio.

USB on the go

Hello, does USB on the go work with the s6? I am into high end audio, and I want to plug an external DAC into the usb port in order to bypass the phone's DAC chip.
USB OTG does work with the S6, not sure about the DAC bypass though...
I've tried 3 different DACs (Fiio Q1, Cayin C5, Schiit Fulla) with the S6 and OTG cable using USB Audio Player PRO and I was never able to get it to work unfortunately.

USB Type C to 3.5mm Headphone Jack Adapter

My issue
Hi everyone, I have a Nexus 6P and want to route my audio through a USB type C converter to 3.5mm headphone Jack. I have purchased one online, but it doesn't seem to be working. I have seen that the Moto Z has this adapter and I assumed one I found online would be compatible with my 6P. The reason I want to do this is because I prefer for the AUX jack to come out the bottom of my phone.
What I have tired
Changed 'Select USB Configuration' to all the different options and tried playing music.
Tried 'audio routing' apps from the app store
What I would like to know
Is this because I need to change a setting in my phone to route music out of the USB C?
Do I need to get some kind of DAC to allow support for this?
Has anyone else tried this with their phone?
Thanks

One reason is that to me it makes more sense to put your phone upside down into you pocket. I've always done this at least. So when listening to music I have to put it the other way round. I have also heard the USB C port offers better sound quality.

Re:sound quality, you'd possibly see a quality increase if you use an external Digital to Analogue Converter or fully usb-c headphones. BUT, if you're using a little dongle (if it's possible), then the phone is still managing the analogue conversion and, thus, a very similar quality of audio output. Now I don't know of the 6p's ability to pipe it straight out iPhone 7 style through a dongle, but short of buying a DAC and going whole-hog on an audio upgrade, I'd just flip your phone the other way in your pocket and go the standard route.
Just my $.02
I have been looking for a solution to this too and I seem to have found one. I poked around on Amazon and I think I finally found adapters that work, here's the link https://goo.gl/QT2ith This the only one with positive reviews so when it comes in on the 30th I'll let all of you know.

Looks quite similar to the one that I got. Hopefully it works for you! Let me know how it goes
I read recently that the current implementation of audio over USB-C isn't very efficient or battery friendly. There's a new spec being ratified to provide audio like the iphone can. Hopefully that's a firmware change and not a hardware one.
http://www.theverge.com/2016/8/17/12519936/intel-usb-type-c-headphone-jack-replacement-idf-2016
I don't think it's possible on the 6P, not without using a USB DAC anyway.
As far as I'm aware, the adapter you have is for a USB 3/3.1 interface. While the 6P has USB-C it is USB 2.
I'm able to get audio out of my USB C port, but it's with a USB headset. Haven't tried it with a 3.5mm headphone adapter, but havd no reason to try it either.
This is weird. Because i have a pair of Sennheiser Urbanites (Wireless edition), and i can use bluetooth, aux, and usb (like for a computer) audio. I once tried to turn off the headsets (bluetooth off, aux and usb still works if connected), and turned off bluetooth on my phone. Then i used my USB type C to USB type A Female adapter (from the google store), and connected the usb-cable from the headsets into the type c adapter. it did output audio through the usb-cable.

Bluetooth headphones usually have their own DAC, so the audio for all but the Aux is still being sent through the DAC first, which is supported by older USB standards.
The new USB 3.1 Audio standard can pass through analogue audio from the internal DAC, which is what I believe phones such as the Moto Z utilise. Otherwise the adapter would require it's own DAC, which would make it far larger and more expensive.
Not sure if you will find a good solution at the moment since they just created a standard for audio over usb c http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20160927006252/en/USB-IF-Announces-USB-Audio-Device-Class-3.0
Did the amazon converter end up working for you?
My experience so far.
Hi, I ordered some usb c to 3.5mm & out of the box so far they aren't working. I tried Neutron and tried to force the audio to usb but unsuccessfully with phone not recognizing the USB connection.
On the other hand the type C to usb-a adapter worked beautifully using mixplorer. If I get working, will update. Thanks.
