struggling to decide s2 skyrocket or google nexus? - General Questions and Answers

right now i have a samsung galaxy s2 (i727r) its rooted, unlocked and has a custom rom, i haven't noticed any performance issues or other issues for that matter but i have been considering selling it to get the nexus, is it a big enough upgrade to justify getting the nexus? or should i just stick with this phone?
just a bit undecided on what to do here, some comments would help me out a bit.
thanks.
[edit]
just realized i posted this in the general section and not the Q&A, if an admin could kindly move this thread i would appreciate it, thanks.

I have the skyrocket and i want the Nexus too... I think its worth it, mainly because of Google Wallet. Plus you get all the updates right away straight from google! JELLY BEAN! As soon as i can i will be upgrading to the Nexus and selling my skyrocket... of course some of the hardware specs are worse than the skyrocket, so you'll have to consider that... The screen, camera, and LTE are the main 3 things that stick out to me... I don't have LTE in my area, but i do when i visit my in laws.. so its not so much a big deal for me. The camera isn't going to matter so much, as i don't take that many pictures, and the screen doesn't matter much anymore, as i bring my tablet with me now for watching TV... So for me, the Nexus is the perfect choice. Its a hard decision, and your daily needs may differ from mine, but i hope i brought up some items you'll need to consider in your decision making. Best of luck to you. Rock on. :b

I would recommend you to get Nexus as
Jellybean will be the final update for S2
Galaxy Nexus is already running jellybean and will surely get next Google Android version too, Nexus devices are well supported by Google
Nexus has better and bigger screen than S2

If you can get it for little money after selling the S2, why not? Otherwise I'd stick with the S2. You have a better screen, a little better radio, better camera, you'll have JB if you don't already via the Rom you're on, and better battery life. There are tons of Roms you can try as well. Unless you're just itching to try something different I'd go with what you've got.

may keep it just noticed the nexus doesnt have a microsd slot, which i something i am looking for, but other comments would still help me out.

The main difference is going to be your update frequency (IMHO), but custom roms can fix that problem. Bounce around the two forums and see which you like better, head up youtube and watch review videos, check out the development going on for each, then make an educated decision as to which is best for you.
That's about all the input I'm interested in giving before echoing slowz request.

[Q] Nexus S better dans GT-I9000?
Hi everyone.
I was wondering something about this new Nexus S....
I'm currently the owner of a Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000M From Bell in Canada.
Today at CES 2011 they said that the Nexus S will come to Canada.
I got 4 replacement for the GT-I9000M since August (in fact since october). The internal Memory Failed, The battery life was poor, 3 button recovery was not enabled, GPS innacurate, Hard time connecting it to my computer and all the stuff said in bad about this phone I got it.....
Since the Nexus S is almost the same (hardware speaking) I was wondering if all the bugs that the SGS suffer from was happening with the Nexus S?
Is the Partition Table is the same?
Do Internal Memory Fail once again?
Is there any issue with Recovery mode?
GPS problems?
Poor battery life?
Any Lag issue?
I really enjoy my SGS when it's not failing but the Nexus S attract me a little more since it got 2.3 and update straight from Google instead of waiting after the carrier "testing" the new rom...
So anyone having or tested both phone or can speak with experience in here?
Thanx
One of the main reason I don't want to get any trouble with the phone is that Samsung got the worst customer service ever seen in electronics (home appliances, tv, phones)...
so the less I have to deal with them the best it is.
Samsung said they are open the put it on the AWS network in canada so if the phone is good, this could be the phone that will make me switch from Rogers to Videotron
No offense, but you're asking in a Nexus S forum what phone we'd prefer. Most of us own a Nexus S. So what do you think the answer is going to be?
Frankly I am not sure why you are having so many problems. I have an SGS for work and it works great. I bought the Nexus S to replace my G1 and it's like a dream compared to my G1. You could always get one and try it out. If you don't like it, return it.

In fact the same thread is on the GT-I9000 Q&A forum. I want to see on both sime your opinions.
But I was thinking that maybe someone here had or also have the GT-I9000 as secondary or previous smartphone. So I could get some feedback and difference

I have both. GT i9000 was my main phone from July until I got the Nexus S.
They're both fine pieces of hardware.
Software-wise, the GT i9000 was a train wreck out of the box. The Samsung RFS file system introduces significant lag to the phone. I know some of the later "leaked builds" of Sammy firmware seem to have addressed this, but I'm not sure if you bought a new one that you'd get it. That means to make the i9000 a pleasurable user experience you must root it and put in custom kernels and "lag-fixes". If you're into that kind of thing, lots of support and options. If you're not, you will definitely prefer the out-of-the-box performance of the NS.
I much prefer the Nexus S physically. It looks and feels better. Has a bit more heft and doesn't feel like I'm going to drop it as much.
I prefer the standard four capacitive buttons on the NS, but miss the trackball of the N1 or physical home button of the SGS. On the SGS the home button is just like the iPhone button in that it will wake the device from sleep...only the power button does that on the NS.
The power button on the NS is a bit easier to hit one handed than on the SGS for some reason.
As I said, they're both fine phones. If you're a ROM flasher, then there are only two real determining factors in my mind that you should consider.
The first is how important is it to you that you have Google's flagship phone that is most likely to get software updates to the base OS fastest (if that's important the Nexus S is your choice).
The second is which network do you want to use, and which phone supports the best 3G speeds on that network. In the US, if you want AT&T 3G service, you must pick the i9000; if you want T-Mo 3G you must pick the Nexus S.
I'm not a huge fan of T-Mo as my primary carrier, so the SGS still has some allure to me, but if network wasn't an issue (ie., there was options for AT&T or Verizon Nexus S and i9000) then the Nexus S would be a no brainer!
Hello!
I've read all the comparison out there and I haven't really decided which one should I buy. I've read the hardware is the same but the benchmarks tests are showing different (the nexus always win?) Is the screen on the nexus worse due that it's not gorilla and that it is S-LCD ? I've heard that galaxy S has many lags and such, so my question is does nexus s have any "known bugs" ?
I really appreciate your answers!

Nice resurrection of a 9 month old thread...
The nexus will benchmark and generally run faster/smoother thanks to it's native EXT4 file system. The screen isn't worse, it's just more fragile than gorilla glass (though neither is likely to withstand a hard enough fall).
Get the Nexus. SGS has a slow moviNAND memory on which the app data partition is. Thats why it's laggy like ****. 2.3* brought improvement in RFS, so the conversion to EXT4 (lagfix) ain't needed/doesn't make a difference. Maybe it doesn't show that much, if you don't install many apps, but when comparing SGS and NS side by side, everyone could noticed that lag on SGS. GPS is also worse and the build quality.
Maybe only thing I *could* miss is the AMOLED from SGS (on SLCD now), but on the other hand, AMOLED sucks balls on the sun, SLCD is much better. And that kinda is more important, then the black blacks.
Who cares what the HW specs tell you, or the benchmarks. It's hard to actually rate the phone, since no one can tell you the quirks of a device, if he ain't an experienced and technical knowledgeable user.
I know what I'm talking about, since I went from Desire to SGS in June, now I'm ****ing happy I could sold it and buy the Nexus. Everything works like a charm here, no need to flash 923 ROM's and fixes or whatever. I was constantly "improving" my SGS over 3 months, since I was never happy with it. Check the SGS forums, full of posts "how to improve that", "lagfix", "thisfix", blabla. Here on NS forums, it's rather dull (thank god).
Hope that makes your decision easier.
Thanks for your opinions! I bought the Nexus S today and it's awesome compared to my old Omnia II (če bi vedel, bi mi lahko kar po slo. povedal heh )
P.S. Just ignore the words in brackets, because I am from the same country as madd0g.

answers to all your questions - yes, the g-nex is exactly what you're looking for. but it doesn't come out till november. if you need something before then, get the GSII

whens the official release date for the nexus s? Since it's almost novemeber, I could wait 2 weeks for the g-nex, pricing? And would the g-nex be worth it in everyway? battery, specs, speed, games, multitasking, etc??? Do you have a prediction that the gsII might be faster then the g-nex, when it runs android 4.0?
The Galaxy Nexus is worth the wait, puts other phones to shame, it will have a ton of roms I would think since it is a google experience phone, meaning it will be pretty popular.
Please thank me if I helped.

The t-mobile sgs2 is still in early development for roms and such, But it seems it has more potential then the sensation, which one would you personally suggest to me? Even though the sgs2 has screen problems while playing hd videos.
The Galaxy Nexus will be available for all major carriers, just not for awhile. I would definitely go with the SGSII. It may seem to be a little lacking in the dev department, but it has had root for less than a week.

I'm actually in the same boat and am leaning towards the Galaxy II as well. The new Nexus does seem tempting though..

Exactly. I'm hoping the t-mobile sgs2 gets some good roms, and such. But I'm worry about getting a bad phone with screen problems. I'm actually upgrading my phone, since Ive been a customer for awhile now. And i'm not sure how all that works.
Question
Hey, can you put a sim card from a no contract " pay as you go " phone in?
sgsII for sure
i will surely get sgs2
+1 for SGSII...u won't regret it
ofcourse HD2 !!
GN is not coming to Tmobile officially anyway.....but current phones I would say the gs2 or amaze if you like htc more

[Q] whats phone would u get nowadays

Hey People,
I now own an htc diamond 2 I had it for 2 years. It has been broken about 7 times! All within warranty but still it’s too much.
End of this month I can renew my contract with my mobile provider, and I can order a new phone.
But I have no idea what phone to choose.
Can someone give me some pointers in what phone I can choose from?
It doesn’t have to be brand new.
Must have:
Exchange support.
Camera at least 5mp.
Gps.
Must be quite fast while browsing.
Android or iPhone??.
I know there are many comparison sites but I rather here it from daily users.
So please tell me why your phone or the phone u mentioned is the right choice.
Samsung Galaxy S2 still seems to be the best, imho. Fast, thin, light, great screen. The only thing I wasn't sure about when I got it was the relatively low resolution, but it actually hasn't bothered me even though I came from an iPhone 4 with a retina display.
The Galaxy Nexus might also be something to look at, although I'm not terribly impressed with the specs.
I'm waiting for the new Google Nexus, what do you think about it?
I got a Galaxy S2 and I love it. The phone is nice and there is a lot of help on it. the community on that phone is pretty active.
Go for the sgs2 just got one the other day my self and im very happy the speed and friendly flashing is great.
+1 for the galaxy S2
Galaxy S2, no contest.
i say wait a couple weeks and get a galaxy nexus. the specs may not be the best, but the hardware acceleration and software make it better than just about anything else you could get.
I'd say wait for the Galaxy Nexus, though it's going to be super costly I think.
A mid-range awesome phone would probably be HTC Desire S. I own it, I love it.
So, if you can wait and pay enough for the Galaxy Nexus it's going to be worth the wait. Else go for the Desire S.
Galaxy S2 again is awesome, but awesomeness is not cheap.
funny that non of u says Iphone????.
ok galaxy S2 was already on my mind.
thanks for the reply's guys.

Compare the amount of iphone developement threads with the amount of android developement threads on xda-developers...
sounds like samsung nexus is gonna be more like iphone in that no external sd card and no removable battery. Kudos for icecream sandwhich but do you wanna be the ghinea pig for software that is bound to have some probs in the beginning? It seems like sg2 is the ultimate phone so far: it has removable card, option to replace battery better hardware, camera and will surely get android 4.0 when everything has been ironed out. I only wish verizon picked up the sg2

Have been playing with the HTC Rezound and it is one powerful beast. I have ave to say it is best phone out there. If you have been waiting for the ultimate phone with a Verizon plan wait no longer for that nexus myth when there is a phone like this. Just my two cents ;-)
The Thunderbolt!!!! You said it didn't have to be new. Probably the mist customizable phone out there.

[Q] Im Just not sure what to do here S3 or N4

First off thanks for your time,
That being said Ive gotten myself into a Brain boot loop that I just cant seem to get out of.
So here's the situation Im currently the proud owner of a Samsung GS3 which hands down is a fantastic phone
the phone is currently running CM 10.1 nightly with the KT747 kernel OC'd to 2.1 GHz Thanks to both devs for there fantastic work
so i guess you could say i have somewhat of a "raw" android experience with a few tweeks that is.
Being that its that time of year and tax return is working its way from the IRS to my bank account Ive been considering trading
my GS3 for the N4 but i just cant seem to put my finger on which device is for me so Im turning to the great people of this forum for help
I know the perks and the downfalls of each phone and the arguments on why one is better than the other so here's my stand point
I DONT NEED/USE
-Expandable storage
-LTE is not top priority
-Removable battery is nice but not necessarily a deal breaker
-Camera Im so/so about - not sure if the N4 has 0 shutter lag hoping someone can shed
some light on this for me it is one feature I do really enjoy on the S3 because i do have
kids that love to move around and are hard to get a good picture of but I feel both cameras are up to par
So all that being said I guess Im just looking for some outside opinions at this point
is it really worth me switching to the N4 or should i hold on to my cash and my S3
Again I do appropriate your time and help.

While the Nexus 4 is beautiful and has higher specs in some parts, I'd recommend saving your money until "the next big thing" comes out like the galaxy s4 or the rumored Motorola X phone.
If you do prefer the stock android experience as that's what you're currently using, you should be fine as the S3 will be almost as good as if you were to get a Nexus 4.
Of course I don't own the devices but I've tried them both for a day or two (friend let me borrow) but I ended up staying with my Galaxy Nexus and decided to save my money as the performance jump isn't that great even from then. The next generation phones do show promise and could possibly be worth upgrading for.
Yea I'm really considering waiting since I did just upgrade to the S3 so if I waited it out the full 18 months they love to stick us with they will have the "super s" or "s5" by then. I think all in all I'll just purchase the Nexus 7.

Well as already pointed out... I would say wait till the 14th... see what the s4 has to offer, then change your phone...
Personally, considering what you said in the first post... you don't want ANY of the extra things the s3 offers over the N4, but you ARE a fan of what the N4 offers which the s3 doesn't... being kindof vanilla android... being a cm10 user, although the s3 will be supported for a while I'm sure, the amount of time it takes to iron out all the bugs due to not having the Exynos source code, atleast for me was extremely frustrating... with the nexus your always ready to go with any custom rom... with the occasional bug here and there...
But if the s4 again has a exynos, the same dev difficulties will stay... not to mention the super delayed updates... so I personally think, wait for the S4... if it doesn't wow you then get the N4 because it seems its better suited to your needs...
As for getting a nexus 7 instead... google I/O is pretty close... its time for a new nexus 7inch tab so you will most likely see it then and avoid a buyers remorse getting an outdated tab now... rest assured there won't be a new nexus phone just yet... its too soon...
So wait a week and make your decision...
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy Q
Not sure how much this will pertain to you, but here's my $.02.
Personally for me I like having the newest version of Android. While some of the bells and whistles of the themes are nice eye candy, I love the vanilla Android with allowing me to install those nice add-ons. While I don't mind loading roms, I don't want to be forced to do that in order to get the newest version within a reasonable amount of time (<a month or two). I bought the galaxy nexus on Verizon the day it came out. First time I ever waited in line before a store opened for a phone. I was so excited. You may or may not know this, but Verizon has taken the nexus name and completely trashed it. My hopes and dreams of having a phone that would always be on the cutting edge of Android was completely trashed because Verizon needed to "perform ample testing to insure the highest quality software", or some BS like that.
Now, I know what you're going to say. You've got a nexus, you're here on XDA, ROOT THAT THING! Yes, I have. I had the bootloader unlocked within 45 minutes of owning the thing, rooted 10 minutes after that. The problem is I bought a nexus to not be forced to F around with roms, unless I wanted to. Verizon has forced my hand to mess around with roms if I want the newest Android.
So, after that long winded answer, I personally would go with the N4 unless you can wait for the next nexus device. All I know is my next phone will be another Nexus, which I'll by directly from google and tell Verizon to go F themselves.
Best of luck.
Edit: I see you were mentioning the N7. I own one of those, bone stock. Did unlock the bootloader and rooted just to put on the circle battery mod. I love it, but personally I'd buy a N10. The 7 isn't that much larger then my galaxy nexus and I wish I had a slightly larger screen. IMO no need for cell-based service when you can teather it to your phone and get the same thing. It's a great device which has replaced taking a laptop with me on vacation. I bought the dongle thing to connect my SD card to it also, which is great for uploading pictures from my camera.
You should buy nexus 4 as it has largest development community and it is the phone which recieves software updates first and its a google certified phone
It has 4g capability
It has no expandability
But a really good camera
And is for only 430 usd
PLEASE HIT THANKS IF I HELPED
Cash is king. I'd just hold onto the S3 and wait for the new wave of devices that're coming, e.g. GS4 and One. Things that'll be noticeably better.
N4 buddy!!!

Your inputs have been taken into great consideration over this decision
And as far as waiting for the GS4 I am a Samsung employe not that they let us know the details of the device before it is released but Im on my 3rd Samsung phone I think its time to switch it up besides my set father just lost his iPhone 5 to a tragic toilet accident that could really use a new phone so i think its time to "grab the bull by its horns" and finally get my hands on that sexy Nexus 4.
S3
Good deal, best of luck on your next phone adventure. I have to wait until the end of this year before I can begin mine. Hopefully the next nexus device will be released and may include an LTE radio, though I'll still tell verizon to go F themselves. Unless of course I can buy it from google directly and stay on verizon's network. I know, I can hear your laughing from here. :good:
Wait for s4 or the New google Phone
Decision
Im do for an upgrade as well soon..im thinking about htc one.. The only thing holding me back is the fact of how much hassle it is to root it.. One reason why i had got the s3 instead of the last htc one.. Before my s3 i had the evo 3d. It was such a pain in the ass to root.. When i switched to s3. I had it rooted in like 25 min.. I really liked that.. But i do miss htc platform..im on sprint so the nexus 4is not offered.. They did come out with galaxy nexus. I am excited to see what the s4 holds.. I dont know..lol
I hear the s4 will be released unfinished. Something about the CPU overheating so it getting something less powerful and curved glass is not ready so its getting regular glass. Plus no superamoled because they get that display to do full 1080p

Well if you really do not care at all for all those cool features that make the galaxy s3 (and its awesome screen) somewhat great better than other phones....really theres no point in waiting for the galaxy s4 uts probably just gonna be faster..
You might as well get the nexus 4.
I have a feeling it would make your life more of a pain compared to the s3 but u sai u dont care about the cool specs...so go for the cheapest, no point saving up money

[Q] Which device to choose on Verizon?

I looked at some of the similar threads but they are old and devices change so rapidly so I am starting a new one.
I am looking for some thoughts, opinions, etc on a new device. I have to buy my device on Craigslist, eBay or somewhere because I have an old Verizon plan with unlimited data and can't upgrade without losing my plan and paying their upgrade fee.
I have been using a Toro Nexus on Verizon for about a year. I have been running CM10 and making updates as they are released. Recently my phone took a header out of my truck and now the screen is cracked. So, it is probably time to get something more up to date.
A couple things I am looking at evaluating are:
ROMS and development love available for devices. Which ones get the most love?
If I get something unlocked as in straight from Google like the Maguro would I be able to get a radio which works on Verizon?
Cost is a consideraton as well. For example I like the price of the S3 right now compared to the S4 on CL.
Any thoughts, opinions, facts, guidance, etc would be awesome!

the Galaxy nexus is a great phone it saddens me to see that you would like another phone. but im not you so lets get start with phone shopping shall we?
Google
I can see that you like all the rom and development for devices i happy for that!, most of the time you would want one of googles flagship phones that is plain ol stock android (nexus s, galaxy nexus, nexus 4 etc..) googles is so great to us since its stock android its much easyer to flash roms and put other goodies on our phones! i have heard the nexus 4 is one of the best phones around right now (not to mention the new white nexus 4 thats coming out soon with Android 4.3!) so if its on your provider i would recomend that from google!
Samsung
So from what you said you want a phone around the price of a S3, from that right there i would recomend a S3! Samsung does a great job with their phones its not the same stock android like the galaxy nexus they have spiced android up to what they call touchwiz which is a very smooth version for their launchers. a S2 might sound old but even that would be a great phone (i dont know about the specs galaxy neuxs might be a little newer so S3 might be better to get). rooting should be very simple all i had to do for my S2 was to flash a pda file from odin so its again easy to be able to join in on all the development. i think i have heard that the S3 (and maby S2) is getting alot of Goodies from the S4.
LG
i have only had some LG phones and in the past they werent so good but their newest flagship the Optimus G Pro is sposed to be aso good as the HTC one and S4 i dont think LG has their own type of launcher such as samsungs touchwiz, htcs Sense, or motorolas motor blur. so that probably means stock android and pretty easy to root and flash stuff.
HTC
the HTC dream was the first android phone, all of their phones are amazing i have had many of their devices, sense is a very smooth, sense 4.0 and up is sposed to be great. the One and its new blinkfeed feature i have heard can get old within a month or two so im not sure. about rooting with htc phones can be a pain. its different between each phone my droid incredible i had to unlock the bootloader turn s-on off downgrade just to be able to get root and cwm and its all a big pain, htc just dosent want us to screw with it maby. for my htc inspire 4g i had to just only unlock the bootloader and could flash a root from there but still was a pain, so if you can deal with some of the fears of easily bricking your phone you can try these phones!
there are alot of (im just going to call them third party but they arent really) third party phones such as huawei, ZTE, kyocera that some are deff better phones from these people that are better than the galaxy nexus just ask if you would like me to explain them!

Thank you for all the info. Much appreciated. The Galaxy Nexus (Toro) is a wonderful phone. I believe it is the longest running in my pocket. It broke my heart when it took a swan dive out of my truck Sunday. I would absolutely go with another of these. The question on that topic is could a guy get the Maguro to work on Verizon's CDMA network? I don't know that much about the hardware but I'd LOVE to try Ubuntu Touch.
There is a local guy who has an S3 advertised on CL for $175. I'd have to evaluate that guy first though. Would I be as happy with the development on the S3 as I have been on the Toro?
