Which phone should I get that will be one of the best phones out there for awhile, thats for t-mobile, and has potential with a good rom, to be even more of a beast? Bascially whats a good phone that will be a beast non rooted, rooted on a customer rom? Picking up a new phone for t-mobile next week, It's a hard choice.... and I'm in need with some help from the community.

Will it beat all the other phones out there by speed and specs and rom development(Cuz im hoping for it to have good development, so i can flash a custom rom and have better battery life, etc)??????
answers to all your questions - yes, the g-nex is exactly what you're looking for. but it doesn't come out till november. if you need something before then, get the GSII

whens the official release date for the nexus s? Since it's almost novemeber, I could wait 2 weeks for the g-nex, pricing? And would the g-nex be worth it in everyway? battery, specs, speed, games, multitasking, etc??? Do you have a prediction that the gsII might be faster then the g-nex, when it runs android 4.0?
The Galaxy Nexus is worth the wait, puts other phones to shame, it will have a ton of roms I would think since it is a google experience phone, meaning it will be pretty popular.
Please thank me if I helped.

The t-mobile sgs2 is still in early development for roms and such, But it seems it has more potential then the sensation, which one would you personally suggest to me? Even though the sgs2 has screen problems while playing hd videos.
The Galaxy Nexus will be available for all major carriers, just not for awhile. I would definitely go with the SGSII. It may seem to be a little lacking in the dev department, but it has had root for less than a week.

Exactly. I'm hoping the t-mobile sgs2 gets some good roms, and such. But I'm worry about getting a bad phone with screen problems. I'm actually upgrading my phone, since Ive been a customer for awhile now. And i'm not sure how all that works.
Question
Hey, can you put a sim card from a no contract " pay as you go " phone in?
sgsII for sure
i will surely get sgs2
+1 for SGSII...u won't regret it
ofcourse HD2 !!
GN is not coming to Tmobile officially anyway.....but current phones I would say the gs2 or amaze if you like htc more

Hey im new to XDA but so far i like it a lot looks like a bunch of great people. I'm eligible for and upgrade and am seriously considering the Inspire any reasons i shouldn't get or should i wait for the new latest and greatest willing to listen to anybody opinions let me know what you guys think
I've been watching the conference coverage happening in Spain right now (Barcelona, right?) through Engadget. So far I haven't seen anything that is making me P.O.'ed at purchasing the inspire.
The future is dual core processors apparently, but reaping these benefits is still a ways off... Enough for me to enjoy the inspire, and possibly purchase a new phone in a year when LTE is rollin'. I really don't have the best handle on this stuff so don't quote me.
I'm wondering the same thing. I've heard rumors that the Samsung Galaxy S II will be coming to AT&T. I would like a new phone now since I am eligible for an upgrade, but as soon as the S II rolls around I'm afraid I'll be regretting the Inspire.

But if I'm rooting it doesn't really matter what Samsung decides to do. AT&T hasn't updated to Froyo on my Aria, but I'm running CM7 so I don't really care.

It does matter. Without an official Froyo release, there won't be official Kernel source code. The Captivate ROMS are GOOD, but they are pieced together with source from other models.
The reasons there isn't CM7 on the captivate are there's no other phone similar enough to it unlike the Aria, so no source, and the fact that they used a very borked up file system and without kenel source, it's virtually impossible to re-write the file system and not have something else be flakey.
thanks for the help so far guys any more opinions would be appreciated
I would say go ahead and get the Inspire it is a nice phone and I don't have any regrets buying mine. I also look at it this way.
If you wait for the next latest and greatest phone to be released; you might as well not buy anything. Since; when it comes to tech toys; once anything is released to market; from CPU's to graphic cards to smart phones to tablets; there is always something in the works that will make it old tech within a few months. So chasing the latest and greatest becomes a game that you most likely will loose.

Hey guys. I'm actually relatively new on the forums, though I've had my Captivate since December last year. I have been using ROMs from these forums since the third day I had my phone, I just never registered.
Anyway, I just feel I should make a post thanking everyone. Mostly MikeyMike01 and ChanceM, because the third ROM I ever flashed was Serendipity. And I've been using Serendipity since then. I have indeed flashed things in between, but the longest I've ever had a non-Serendipity ROM on my phone has been less than an hour. So it's safe to say that Serendipity is a physical part of my phone now... In fact, since I'm getting the HTC Inspire, my brother is getting my Captivate (his first Android phone), and the ROM that I pre-loaded for him is Serendipity 5.12. That's how much I trust/love this ROM.
Anyway, does anyone have any opinions on the HTC Inspire? I remember seeing one other person in these forums who switched to the same phone, saying that it seemed like a more sturdy phone.
I will thoroughly miss these Captivate forums though. Thanks are as follows:
MikeyMike01
ChanceM
existz (I use SuckerPunch-Voodoo)
Samsung (LOL I use the KP1 modem, dunno who to thank for this one)
Anyone else who has some sort of mod on my phone.
its way faster and way more enjoyable, I wouldnt go back for nothing u will definately like it.
I couldn't justify spending $500 on a software upgrade.
The SGS2 seems interesting though. Have to find a place to import it fit a reasonable price... The international version is completely AT&T compatible.

After weighing all the pros and cons of the Galaxy S series and the upcoming 2 (talking about the internation/original here), the Galaxy S 2 will most likely be my next device. Decent build, decent software, hardware is top notch, and that screen is something I can't drop now that I've stared at it for so long. Knowing that the international Galaxy S 2 works with AT&T's HSPA+ bands without modifications is also a deciding factor.
please help me out. I'm with rogers canada they are sending me iphone 4. There is no way ill use or open it cause of previous experience. So I'm gonna sell it for 500. Now if you had to buy any of this phone which you would get? Atrix, sgs2, dhd, or nexus s. DHD already available here and nexus s and atrix coming this month. Agreed for the most part. AT&T held back the Froyo ROM without a doubt for stupid reasons, but we aren't sure if the i9000 is actually getting Gingerbread. Yeah, it was leaked, but so was Froyo way back when. I understand that Froyo wasn't released for our phone mostly because of AT&T, but you can't be so sure; it's still just a "leak".

Not true at all. Serendipity is the closest I've found to perfect, but it's still a ROM. From experience and from hearing other people speak about the Inspire, you don't really even need to put a ROM on the HTC Inspire 4G for it to be perfect. I'm definitely going to flash something (maybe something that'll remove Sense UI, I'm not sure if I'll like it), but most of the features in the ROMs are already found on the phone as stock.

I would not get the DHD. I have a friend who has it, and it's just overhyped. It's not as good as everyone makes it seem.
The Nexus S is pretty much like this phone in which you'll have the same amount of development. The hardware may be different in technical respects, but the same in user experience.
The SGS 2 isn't released yet, but when it is, it's going to be a great phone. If it was already released, I'd consider buying it, but I'm not going to wait for it to come out.
The Atrix is somewhat overkill, but if you're entering college or have a need for a netbook/small laptop with basic features (e-mail, Facebook, etc.), then the Atrix is for you. It's just expensive, even with a contract.
Also, please post questions in the Q&A forum; that's why it's there.
Try Cognition 4.1 on your captivate. You won't be disappointed.
The Inspire kicks ass.

Between CM7 and MIUI on the Inspire it blows anything and everything out of the water in the Captivate/i9000 forums. After seeing how Samsung utterly destroys their phones with Touchwiz, I'll never buy a Samsung phone again.
Go with the Inspire and you will not be disappointed.
So DHD is not that good but inspire 4G is recommended? it's a bit confusing. Isn't the inspire 4G just a DHD with another name? Is there something I am missing?
The inspire is a downgrade hardware wise. Should of held out for something more amazing that's coming out this year. If it doesn't have a dual core I'm not interested.

They are basically the same phone. So that suggestion doesn't make much sense...
Inspire is a downgrade in hardware but upgrade in software. Add to that the rooting is quite a pain compared to the captivate...

How so? It has a lower pixel density and a Super LCD, which are both a downgrade, but I don't watch videos on my phone. Otherwise, how is it a downgrade? It has 700 somewhat MB of RAM, gets amazing Quad and Linpack scores compared to the Captivate (I don't base opinions on benchmarks, though), and Sense UI, though I might not use Sense...
the insipire isnt much of an upgrade. did u already get it? i personally would still take my captivate over it
I honestly can't see any of the current phones destroy the captivate in functionality and flexibility except for the nexus S. Pure google + decent specs.
The inspire blows cap away in speed, everyone in inspire forums will tell u that and almost all of them are previous captivate owners and switched to it, even blows the atrix away, call it a downgrade or whatever put whatever spin u like on it and its still the top phone to beat. and it works out of the box the radio even works great, i get no random shut downs my battery consumption is better then cappy, I dont get lag at all, it will load any program faster and run it better then the cappy did, watch a video on youtube about it, http://www.smartphoneenvy.com/featured/face-off-htc-inspire-4g-vs-samsung-captivate/ and yes no doubt there will be more better phones out this year same as 6 months from then there will be even more, with my 6 month early upgrade it cost me 300 to get it which I certainly can live with, in 6 months i will get another of the better phones out of the time.
I gave my Cap to my aunt. I have Serendipity 5.12 on it and MIUI on my Inspire. I have around 75 apps on the Inspire and it booted quicker, unlocked quicker, and the notification bar pulled down with no lag at all.
I was running CM7 on it and it was even faster than that.
The screen difference isn't that big of a deal, either, and I've stared at the SAMOLED screen since last August.
With the SGS II not coming to Canada anytime soon, Im looking for a different android phone to play around with and probably end up keeping in the long run. I was dead set on getting an Atrix purely for the power of the phone and the lapdock accessory, after seeing most of the reviews saying that I was better off getting an actual laptop for the same price and could do far more itself, Im kinda leaning off the Atrix trail atm. So I was thinking about either the Nexus S or the HTC Incredible S. Or should I still go ahead with the Atrix (Even though that pretty little bootloader still aint unlocked)?

Skip the Atrix as the software (and Motoblur) is terrible - the hardware is amazing, but it feels crippled by the crappy software, The HTC Incredible S is a nice phone, IMO it doesn't excel in any one category, but overall is a pretty good device. Note that if you are into modding, the Incredible S has a locked bootloader and root still has not been achieved on it for the Bell version.
The Nexus S is pretty good, but is missing a couple of things I like (LED notification light and an SD card slot), but it is a stock Google phone and should be great for modding. I'm currently on a SE Arc - overall, I think I prefer it to the Incredible S and the Nexus S.
BTW, some of the UK sellers are now selling the Galaxy S II if you want to pick one up.

Yes, they would. Check out clove.co.uk and expansys for more information.
If the Sensation has the same camera (8 MP) as the Incredible S, then I would suggest that you look at alternate camera's. While it's great to have a 8MP camera, the Incredible S camera is not as good as some of the other 8MP camera's.
Personally, I would lean towards the Galaxy S II!

I think the SGS II costs about $680 (GBP440), not $900.
Anyway, I found the software on the Atrix bad enough to sell it a couple of months into ownership. There are a few issues on the Rogers/Fido network with the Atrix - e.g. capped upload speeds (max 384kb upload), issues with displaying Caller ID with name and issues with wifi hot spots. The hardware is amazing, but I wish I could install HTC Sense on it (never going to happen due to a locked bootloader).
It's your call in the end, but maybe it's better to wait for the prices to come down.

Yea was doing a bit more research on the Atrix and found out that issue as well. When you say $680, that canadian or US? The cappy i have right now, got someone to buy it for $500. So I guess forking out $200 more shouldnt hurt.
I will go for Incredible S. Why? Just preference. What I normally do is if you really can't decide, head to the shop and try the feel of the phone.
If you are leaning towards hardware and stuff, then of course would need more advise on those who had hands on experience with it.
Just my 2 cents.

Ok .. so right now I have a Motorola Atrix 2 on AT&T, and quite frankly, I am NOT impressed with this phone at all .. the fact that Motorola did not learn from its mistakes from the Motorola Atrix 4G in regards to the memory issues is just pure stupidity.
I'm torn between the 2 new phones that were just released to AT&T .. the HTC Vivid and the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket. Now, I have hammered theweb reading reviews about the 2 phones .. I have gone into the AT&T Store and played with both .. but for unknown reasons, I cannot make up my mind as to which one to get.
I obtained the Atrix 2 from BestBuy in the beginning of November, so I'm currently in the 30 days return policy .. so:
I'm posting this poll to see what other readers suggest as to what would be the best to get next .. please vote, let me know .. and if any questions or comments about the phones .. please post .. the more feedback, the better.
Thank you.
skyrocket, no question about it.
I would have to go with the Skyrocket i've used a raider and well... it feels like ever other HTC phone on the market... they really don't differentiate their products well. The Skyrocket, well it's a Galaxy S II so it has those in common but even though it uses a Qualcomm it's still quite a decent.
I've tried the Raider, The Razar and the SIILTE against each other once or twice already at a store and well the SIILTE beats both of them.
In all I would recommend the SIILTE, Samsung makes good products and are quite speedy in updating their products, HTC well you will get "Well your device can't support sense 4.0 "But it's on your budget device" "so..."
PERFECT .. please keep the responses coming
Well would you be willing to wait for option 3.
Get a Galaxy Nexus you'll be able to get one next week when they are released you can import one since they already come unlocked. Or they will be released on AT&T pretty soon

Definitely Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket, the specification itself is better than HTC Vivid.
Goto GSMarena and do a comparison of these 2 phone.
Out of all previous poster prolly only couple actually own the Skyrocket. I was about to buy it but I've changed my mind inside ATT's store after playing almost an hour with both. Any sgs2 user will say "Sammy's the best" and indeed it is, but the Skyrocket has a different CPU and I actually could see the difference. Didn't like the wvga on its 4.5" screen, for some reason the screen on sgs2 looks so much better. If you don't care for 4.5" go with sgs2, otherwise I would go back to the store and play a little more.

Why? Dev support on that from stemming from i9100 which the Skyrocket is not 'compatible' with.

Looks like its coming pretty soon. Maybe some awesome devs can work some magic and get us ICS before AT&T does.

That's Awesome
So the original s2 and international only? Hope the skyrocket international comes along beside it so someone can port it to att for us.
Was really hoping for this to be att news. But I guess I should have less faith in them.
We have a different processor and gpu in our Skyrockets than the international version. Not sure if ICS for that device would help a lot for rom development on ours, but then again we have some amazing devs here on XDA
Or not...
They updated their article:

Update: Samsung's just tweeted that March 10th date is (sadly) wrong. It added that once the upgrade schedule is concrete, it'll confirm through its dedicated Twitter account.

I am sick of Samsung.

Is it me or is samsung acting like a bunch of monkey flinging poo

Ditto. My Skyrocket is only a few months old and it's going to be 'old tech' as soon as the HD hits.
Update recalled. Or delayed which ever you prefer.

My next device is going to be the next Nexus device. I'm tired of this carrier and OEM bull****.

As long as LG isn't the one to get it.....my wife's (after I pawned it off on her) Thrill is still yet to be updated to Gingerbread.
Comparing Samsung to others like Motorola and HTC, they are all the same. At least they have been pushing updates for bug fixes and such. The Thrill has yet to get even ONE update and they have major rebooting issues along with others. I would buy another Samsung. Would prefer they were the ones to get the next Nexus phone again.

I traded my Thrill for the Skyrocket because of this. SO glad I don't have that paper weight anymore. At least we know ICS is coming, and it's about ready. LG was just playing with our emotions.
I said the same thing about only getting Nexus, but I was unimpressed with the specs of this last one and my NS4G had horrible reception issues because of a ****ty antenna.
Add to this the fact that they omit an SD card slot <--That is the biggest deal breaker by far! I like being able to take all of my files with me from phone to phone and not have to spend hours transferring files when I get a new phone.
Its basically just the carriers, if you want to get updates and have an amazing phone get the international version! I would speend 300 bucks more to pick up a of gs2 when it first came out. But I get a free phone anyway. Same thing for the gs3 the galaxy devices are pretty dang good! I mean the gs2 is still on of the best IMO. Or at least just got past after a year of it being out. So grab that extra. Money and go for it

It sucks that they're taking so long. But, if you want to stay w/ GSM, I think the SR is still the best game in town ICS or not. Battery life on the Nitro and Vivid aren't nearly as good. And when I played w/ them at the store, they weren't nearly as responsive as the S2 (i777 or SR). The Nitro's screen was nicer, but wasn't so much nicer that I'd give up battery life and performance (and LG doesn't do much better w/ updates either). Nexus is cool, but if you don't wanna pay $6-700, value external storage, and LTE, that's off the table, too.
Samsung should've been happy w/ the original S2 (still one of the best phones available right now). They didn't need to release so many versions. I had in mind before buying this phone that the i777 will get ICS before the SR (either thru XDA or official) since the hardware is nearly identical to the international version. But, LTE was more important to me than ICS.
We can keep waiting for that perfect phone, or be happy that we have an awesome phone right now.
nexus devices are always inferior then the latest phone of that year...For example...Nexus S was inferior then SGS and now Galaxy Nexus in inferior then SG2....
I agree with above poster...with so many devs working for our phones, I think I would always go for a better hardware then the one which will get updated quickly.
I am using Samsung Captivate now, I am already running ICS (almost stable). it was one of best smartphone hardware wise 2 yrs ago..so its still getting development really good.
Waiting for official updates is dumb. The devs is where the good stuff comes from. ICS will be on our SR's from our devs loooooooong before Samung or ATT gets it to us. Standby for the good stuff. It's coming.

So there's no XDA release of ICS yet for Skyrocket?
Not a fully functional or stable one.
