how on earth do you get rid of the "firmware upgrade encountered an issue. please select recovery mode in kies and try again" message?
i've been searching the web for hours trying to figure something out and kies wont read my phone. Please help!
P.s sorry if this is has already been answered

That's download mode. If you can't get phone to boot or to recovery you will have to Odin/hemidial back to Gb. What were you doing that caused this.

Where exactly is it failing? Provide more detail...have you tried different USB ports? Different USB cords? Different computers?
Not trying to be rude or mean...but either your USB cord/port isn't working or you are doing something wrong, your phone is in download mode so its saveable
Close heimdal/Odin
Open heimdal/odin
Re enter download mode:
pulling the battery
Placing it back in
Holding both volume keys (don't touch power)
Connect phone to pc
I find its best to restart Odin/heimdal if it fails...as well as restart download mode...
Also...since you just used heimdall Odin is unuseable on the port heimdall was used...heimdall replaces the infuse drivers with special ones for whatever port heimdall is used on

If Hemidial doesnt work for you try Odin. I have read that people have trouble with one but the other works. I myself use Odin. I had to go back to stock from CM10 so I am sure that the odin back to GB works. I used this guide with the second package. (GB with root). give this a try.

If you are still stucked on phone!pc , use one-click unbrick. Search for it here on xda or on google

You on the other hand are being rude, IMHO. Around here we provide and help, sometimes we do the searching for the users and provide the links. But bottomline it all falls on the user to fix their phone or resolve their issues. Even if you didnt mean what you posted, you didnt provide to the user issues and seeing you are new we will let you slide....
Thx sir, btw I am no body you can take my post and just pass it up or maybe read it and do some reading your self,

Not necessarily. I remember the first I time used a one click it gave me grief installing the drivers. If I remember I launched it, it wanted to install the drivers, it didn't do anything after it was done, so I closed the window that popped up to install the drivers, then unplugged and replugged my phone to the computer and clicked the button. It worked fine then.

One other thing, are you just logged in as admin, or are you right clicking and running as admin? Even though you are logged in as admin, sometimes apps don't run with elevated privileges, you still need to do the right click.

There are a couple of things to point out:
Get Kies off your computer - it is a source of problems. Also means delete from recycle bin if there.
Download the Infuse drivers from bigjoe's ISET here: http://d-h.st/sKF
Thanks to bigjoe for an amazing page of resources !!
Be sure you have the latest version of Java here: http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp
Follow qkster's instructions he provides here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1629079
Big thanks to qkster for doing this - saved many phones for countless number of users !! Me alone over a million times and counting

Restart your computer and then pull the battery out of your phone and put it back in. Now on your computer open Odin and then hold vol+ and vol- and plug in the USB cord this will put you in downlaod mode. And use Odin to get you back to a stock rom

Heimdall uses it's own driver so Jake you install that and uninstall all the others, SO that may help with the recognition issue, as the stock closed source driver can be a douche sometimes...like in your case.

I've seen that error code 43 on my machine when there's a larger USB issue. Usually two things will correct that - a reboot and switching USB ports.
I would also suggest (if you haven't already) uninstalling all of the drivers you have installed - Samsung- or Heimdall-related, then reboot, then do the Heimdall again.

Ok, I took a quick look at the videos in the OP. Two things I noticed:
- You have the phone plugged in prior to putting it into download mode. It's possible you're just keeping the plug in after putting it there (couldn't see in the video). Try putting the phone in download mode, unhook the cable, then rebooting the computer (leave the phone in DL mode), then hook it up again.
- I saw that you have an ICS build. Do any button combinations get you to recovery (V+/V-/Power, V+/Power)? If so, you might be able to flash another rom.
- You may also want to look for AdamOutler's One-click Unbrick. That might be of some use in your situation.

Ok, I looked a little more at the one click unbrick, and since you can get to download mode, it doesn't look like the right solution. So.. nevermind that one.
As far as removing the drivers, it's something of a two-step process.
Step one is to plug the phone in, let Windows see it (even if incorrectly), and then go to device manager. From there, find the phone, and uninstall it/remove drivers. Then unplug the phone.
Step two is to go to "Programs and Features" and remove any android/samsung drivers that show up there.
Once you've done that, check to make sure any folders that drivers would have been unpacked into (mine is in C:\usb_driver) has all the Samsung or Heimdall drivers removed (BE CAREFUL WHILE DOING THIS - ONLY REMOVE SAMSUNG/HEIMDALL DRIVERS IF YOU'RE 100% CERTAIN).
Then, reboot the computer, re-run Heimdall to get zadig.exe to do its thing, then connect the phone.
Also, have you considered dual-booting (or using a USB live drive) of Ubuntu? Heimdall seems to be a little happier in Linux, but you'll just need to make sure that Java installs with it.
There's also a really slim chance that if you hook the phone up in download mode, ADB might detect it enough to where you can give the "adb reboot recovery" command.

[Q] Can anyone help unbrick my phone...

I tried running Odin to unbrick back into recovery, but apparently didn't have the drivers installed (to my surprise). I hate to say it but I think I've reached the point of no return...any help would be very much appreciated.
Edit: I can't even get into dl mode and I don't have the samsung logo on the screen anymore...just a phone and computer logo.
May be you are not in dowload mode correctly.
For download mode:
1. remove battery
2. connect phone to computer
3. put battery
4. press volume up and down buttons only (no power button)
Try these steps, hope its helpful.
As far as the driver issue is concerned, downloading "Kies" is the easiest way. The phone doesn't actually work with the software, but the process of installing it will take care of any driver issues.
Search Kies in google to grab the download.
Try one click unbrick ^^ it work on mine

Don't plug in your phone at all. Open up Kies/Kies Mini or whatever you have, and under the options it should have an option to install drivers. Once they are done, close kies, reboot your computer, open up Odin with whatever you are flashing, and then plug your phone into download mode.

No, the program itself can install them without the phone, at least kies mini will. Or you can just download the driver from here:
32 bit drivers: http://www.mediafire.com/?0b45zo7o75rc5d5
64 bit drivers: http://www.mediafire.com/?3dh4d6up72me9re
It said I successfully dl'ed the drivers, yet nothing has changed...used kies mini, restarted my comp, and tried to sync, but it still can't recognize the phone...hate to admit it, but I think I've exhausted just about every solution I could find or think of :/
get rid of kies. it's a useless program. also if it's open odin might not work, even if it's open in the background like in the system tray.
the drivers are in the most logical place you could think of. on the samsung website under device support.
http://org.downloadcenter.samsung.c...445/SGH-i997_Infuse4G_USB_Drivers_5_2_0_2.zip
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/downloads/at-t/SGH-I997ZKAATT
use the samsung cable if possible, others should work but on the older moment/intercept style phones a specific cable seems to be required. it couldn't hurt to make sure you have the correct cable.
even if you have the phone + computer screen it doesnt automatically mean you are in download mode. you may still need to do the download mode proceedure from battery pull (to make 100% sure the phone is off before you start the proceedure)
the best way is to
1 open odin
2 pull battery
3 connect the cable
4 phone should be face down
5 hold the volume buttons at the same time
6 with volume buttons depressed slide the battery into place
now you may see dwnload or you may see phone + computer or you may even see a black screen but there is a good chance that if the drivers worked that you will see a yellow box in odin
good luck

UBM lets you upload download mode to a device regardless of its state. I spent alot of time researching the methods and I came up with the mod for this device not too long ago.
UBM is the best option. Here is a demo on a captivate. We rewrote the HIBL for compatibility with the infuse4g
Thanks for all the help guys, but absolutely nothing I tried was working and I was short on time and patience...so you gave in to the JTAG unbrick service. I couldn't stand to pay for a service that I was sure I could perform myself, but when it got down to it, I didn't have time to deal with I all. I can confirm that it is a legit service. Great communication and Josh does quick work of getting things working again...I'm a firm supporter of DIY, but if you do reach the point of no return like I did, it's a very reliable resource.

I have a suggestion. I also had this issue. The problem was my main PC. I simply used my old laptop and it worked like a dream. I know thus seems too simple but it has worked for several people.
Use GTGs Ultimate Unbrick on a different computer.

[Q] Did I brick my phone? [Solved]

Hello all,
Firstly thank you for the great development and help the community is providing for GS4G. From the time I bought this phone (few weeks ago), I have been playing around with different ROMs. I try GB roms and ICS roms every now and then. Always go back to GB using 1 Click's.
Yesterday when I was going the 1-Click Heimdall, it failed in between with some error. After this, I am unable to boot into the OS or recovery or download mode. It comes to a screen which tells me that the firmware upgrade was interrupted and asks me to use recovery in Kies. I tried this, but Kies does not even recognize my phone anymore. Windows shows my phone as "unknown device". I tried uninstalling and re-installing Kies, but still no use. I hope there is some way to get my phone back.
I read somewhere about a USB Jig that could get you into download mode. I have ordered it from Amazon and it may take a couple of days. Meanwhile, if any of you can help, it would be great. Thanks!
youre soft bricked, this is fixable. The firmware upgrade interrupted screen is the same thing as download mode. try reinstalling the drivers which i think are found in the sgs4g BIBLE thread. after that, plug in your phone and make it go to the firmware upgrade interrupted screen and see if it installs the drivers. read lumin's guide. it explains everything step by step. im going to try to link it here soon.
EDIT: [GUIDES] Fresh out of box Galaxy S 4G | Heimdall One-Click For Dummies
this is lumin30's guide not mine, i just linked it. thank him.

Thanks. I had tried eollie's Heimdall Stock KJ6 + Root. But, I don't remember seeing the driver installation window show up. I tried reinstalling the drivers through Kies couple of times and re-booting. But, still didn't work. I will try what you suggested when I get home.
You should be able to fix it. Goodluck

When I connect my phone, Heimdall does nothing but says "disconnected". Windows shows that "a device has malfunctioned" and shows "unknown device connected".
Do you have the full heimdall?

I do remember installing drivers through this Heimdall before when the phone was working.

Sounds like you need to run zadig.exe in the Drivers folder of the Windows distribution of Heimdall.
If that doesn't work, right-click on (My) Computer, select Manage, then select Device Manager. In the panel that opens, find your device, right-click on it and you can then look at its properties and potential change the driver there.
(Yes, this kind of shenanigans is another of the reasons I really dislike Windows)
Ok so what you should try is downloading the heimdall suite
https://github.com/Benjamin-Dobell/Heimdall/downloads
Extract and open the drivers folder and run zadig. Click devices/show all devices and if your phone is plugged in and in download mode it should see it. Install drivers and it should say drivers successfully installed. Then run your one-click jar file and it should work.

I tried all this. But, still Zadig shows my phone as "unknown device" and does not install drivers for it. Tried USBDview to remove any instance of Samsung & Android from the drivers. But, still does not recognize my device. Any other suggestions.
Try different USB ports on your computer.
Install Ubuntu (not totally kidding on that one, it will install side-by-side with Windows)
When is that jig getting there? One time I had a similar situation and I built myself a jig and it worked like a charm. Phone goes straight into download mode. I dunno if this will resolve your situation but I'm pretty sure this isn't the first time we've seen someone with this problem and then after trying several different computers and USB cables we usually say maybe your phone's USB Jack is messed up? And then the thread goes dead.

Have you uninstalled any drivers? Download and install the drivers from the bible thread if you haven't. Like suggested, try different USB ports and different USB cables. Sometimes it takes more than one try for some reason.

Have you rebooted your comp at all?? If no that might be the problem.
SUCCESS !!
Thanks a lot for all your suggestions.
Here is what worked:
- I opened device manager and uninstalled ALL USB devices (Yes ALL, not just Samsung, Android etc) and unfamiliar Storage devices.
- Then I rebooted once so that all other device drivers could be installed.
- Then I rebooted a second time and let it install any remaining drivers.
- Then I plugged in the phone and it installed the driver and now it started showing the correct device name
- Now, I ran the Heimdall 1-click and it opened offered to re-install drivers. I did this.
- After all this, I was able to get 1-Click GB rom installed and now back to VB.
(I think the key was "uninstall all USB devices" and "reboot TWICE")
glad you got it to work. ive had my share of soft bricks with this device and it always takes something different to get it to run right. im starting to think that my computer is alive because of this reason because it just doesnt like to play nice sometimes. LOL

Help with fixing my phone (Please help)

I am going to give you the complete situation so you guys can help with the best of your ability. Over the summer I was at my Grandmas house with my cousins and we were playing Minecraft on the iPod and iPad. I knew that they had it in the Android market and tried to get it. No luck because it was not compatible with my device (Motorola Fire XT 530). I read up on a tutorial to get any app in the store and that was to change the build.prop settings to nexus x or something so I could get it. I rooted my phone and tried it but it screwed up my keyboard and an error occured on screen. So I went into this program I had and completely deleted the file(build.prop, still have a back up though). I tried to turn on the phone but it was stuck in a boot loop . So it is still in the boot loop and I cant turn on my phone.
Things I have tried so far:
1. Plugging it into my computer (wont show up)
2. Clearing my memory and cache in recovery mode (still wont turn on)
3. ADB (wont show up, not even in recovery mode)
4. Using this tutorial http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1920446 (Was able to get into the flash mode but MSM Flash 7227 wont install correctly for some reason (have updated drivers))
5. Cant use ODIN because my phone cant go into download mode
6. Using default recovery (not clockwork, dont think I can get it because I cant turn on phone) to update the file (didnt work because apparently Motorola locks there bootloader)
I dont think I left anything else out and am looking for a solution. I also have default recovery which may be an issue.
Thanks a lot for reading

First of all you cant use Odin to flash Motorola Devices because it is meant for Samsung phones.
Secondly answer these questions:
1. In PC which OS are you using?
2. Have you tried reinstalling RSD lite then rebooting?
Having stock recovery is no issue because you can't get any other in this phone.
It is easy to get it back working.
I suggest you to try some other PC.
OR
Follow these steps as in order.
1. Uninstall RSD lite.
2. Uninstall Motorola Drivers.
3. Now first install Motorola Drivers the RSD lite.
I think this may work for you.
I am using windows 7 on a laptop which may be the problem because it may be a hub not directly connected to the mother board. Thank you and I will try your suggestion.
Btw thanks for all your help over the last couple days.
I also used this on two other laptops but the MSM Flash still wont install for some unknown reason. So I dont think using RSD lite is the problem.
Here's the solution
I found the solution to your problem.
Download the attachment.
Extract it.
Copy the file in the extracted folder and paste it in C:/windows/system32/drivers
Reboot your PC
And yes you must connect it directly without any hub or something.
Actually these are the RSD lite drivers which I think your PC was unable to install correctly.
Okay I will try this when I get home from school. If this doesnt work could you try sending me the MSM Flash7227 driver?

So locate that to C:/windows/system32/drivers/the-file-i-gave-you
It will install its drivers.
OR
Alternate way is to install Motorola Software Update from here
It will install drivers automatically as it also needs phone to be switched in flash mode(i.e. through flash drivers) to update phone software.

This didnt work because to update drivers my computer has to recognize the phone which it cant. I would need the driver Flash MSM7227 for it to work. If you could find that EXACT file on your computer and send it to me that would be great. I tried the two things you stated but it says the phone is not connected so I cant download the updates.
This must be very frustrating for you but thanks for your help.

Don't know about the problem.
Maybe 64-bit system.
And don't download moto update. Download and install only Moto software update "tool".
I sent you the same drivers. But I think the problem is my 32-bit system or your 64-bit.

Silly question...are you in Download Mode now? Easy way to achieve is to pull and reinsert battery, then hold down both volume buttons while plugging in the USB cable.
If you are there and no COM port connection, then are you using a different USB port (or PC) since last time? It is said that Download Mode does not like USB 3.0.
Hope this helps.

No sir phone it is not getting in download mode.
Like I said last night it was going into download mode today it is not.
Some hardware is detected but com port is not being detected. No samsung port in device manager.
I think the bootloader is corrupted. As I said I opened the PDA file in bootloader section and then very very stupidly pressed the start button.
It flashed 17 percent and then stopped. I then again even more stupidly (like it is even possible to be this much if an idiot, but evidently I am) disconnected pulled the battery out and tried to get into download mode.
It did screen was messed up showing rainbows but Odin detected the phone.
Then I made this post after the first reply I tried to go into download mode so something is detected but not the com port.
So I think it is safe to say that the bootloader is corrupted. Now is there a way to repair the bootloader without the ort jag?
Thank you very much for your answer and your time.

Download mode is supposed to be independent of the bootloader, so if you still cannot get into Download Mode, you should luck out with a jig.

Can you please tell me if I can create this jig thingie, do you know a guide because I am pretty sure I am never going to find one here in my country.
Thank you very much for your help
I have seen some videos looks pretty simple just put a 300 k ohm resistor between the 4th and 5th leg.
I will try and make the jig and post the result tomorrow.

The Unbrick package rescues half-trashed bootloaders (among other things) from what I read in other parts of the forum, so you should be fine. You may, however, need to flash a back to root package (my mirror has option C, albeit in an extracted mess) in order to get system working properly again. When I had my Infuse, it was the Rogers version, so I could never use the AT&T packages (so I never knew first-hand the difference between the unbrick and back-to-stock).
Can cross that bridge when you come to it. Hope this helps.
Okay I am having trouble making a jig. I could not find a proper 301 k resistor to I stiched 3 100k resistors. Somehow it is not working. Maybe the USB connector us faulty. It had four connectors on the main side and 1 on the other.
I will change the USB connector and try again.
Thank you very very much

Hmmm, that should work... 301K is pretty specific but there are a lot of variance with resistors, and unless the variance is being amplified by daisy-chaining three 100K's, there shouldn't be a problem. If you have a multimeter, you should check the resistance readout to see if it is off by much.
If not, then it comes back to my original theory. Jacked bootloaders can be modified/restored via ODIN or Heimdall, although the problem screen you have (in the end, a really jacked bootloader) isn't the same as what I was going on (which was the wrong, partially functioning bootloader).
I thought the Download/Odin mode was called off at the Modem level (before the bootloader), but I may be wrong. If so (that is, if your jig does not work), you may need a JTAG service after all.
Sorry for any wasted effort.
I could not find a 5 pin USB connector, I tore apart at least 7 USB cables and all of them ONLY had 4 pins.
I think I am going to have to tear apart the original cable of my S3 and I really really don't want to do that.
I will post the final results on Friday evening
Okay I found a 5 pin connector and made a jig but it did not work. Looks like I a going to have to pay for a jtag service.
Thank you again for all your help
Fixed my Phone
All right I have finally fixed it. The problem was I had some newer or I don't know older driver versions installed. I installed i997 Kies mini and installed the driver that came with that software.
And as soon as I connected the phone while pressing Vol Up + Vol Down computer detected it and odin detected it too. Then I installed your provided firmware.
It is okay now. It is working, there is a rainbow effect every time I turn it on but that is okay. Only recovery is not working. I can't go into recovery.
Everything else is working fine. Thank you very much for all your help.
