Hi all,
I'm planning a 2-week trip to Canada (Ottawa->Montreal)starting next week. I'm currently on ATT. I'm pretty sure it will work in Canada.
Just wondering if there is any DATA-ONLY plan up in Canada that doesn't require contracts, probably pay-as-you-go kind of stuff, because it's only for 2 weeks. 2GB should be well more than enough, 1GB maybe also good enough.
I did google, Roger and Bell popped up, but I haven't used them at all, so I have no idea which one is good.
any input would be helpful
THANKS!

Yup. just figured that out. CAD$25 for 100 MB, then $0.15 for each MB.:crying:
If ur going to ottawa/Montreal, every Starbucks and MacDonalds u go to will have free wifi, as well as several if not all Tim Horton's and a bunch of other restaurants as well. Its obviously not as convenient as a constant data connection, but its free, and if u have no need to access time sensitive emails or the like, a decent alternative actually.

Sounds good guys. Thanks for the heads up. I guess Mcdonalds will work just fine for me. I have already downloaded the offline maps for ottawa and montreal. I'm ready to go.
Need to get some ROOTS and Maple syrup.
When in Ottawa be sure to get some beaver tails in the byward market, go to wild wing for some awesome chicken wings, go to Smokes on Dalhousie for some crazy poutine and walk the Rideau canal!

You definitely don't wanna make the same mistake I did and allow data to be on when roaming in Canada. I did that a couple years ago and the 15 minutes my data was turned on cost me $79 bucks for just a few MB of data. An AT&T rep disclosed to me that phones are forced to poll data back and forth on the network when you're roaming as a tactic to make you rack up data charges.

Okay so they are planning on slowing you down once you reach a certain limit they set with their biggest package 4GB I would guess its around that point, how are they going to trottle everyone's speed down to a crawl? Is it going to be like they trottled everyone's speed up in the past VIA software updates? Anyway just curious what you all think and hopefully there's away to not be stuck in a rut on this one, I do a lot of streaming, and multiplayer gaming on my phone...

It's not in effect yet, I do between 6 and 16 depending on if I'm downloading new roms and stuff too, but its suppose to be effective soon.

According to the post on ATT Website, they are putting it into effect on October 1st.
Secondaly, they are only capping the extreme few that are using CRAZY amounts of data, and taht number was WAY WAY above 4g data.
I spoke to a friend at ATT and he stated that currently the cap was at 10gigs. Now, that could change but who knows.
The data throttling is not being done VIA software and such but instead a change to your plan. All ATT phones are tracked via IMEI numbers and thus the way they know who has what number and what data/messaging packages. All they are doing is making a change to your plan that will only allow you to access the EDGE network.
I can see this possibly being bypassed but will have to wait till the change hits to see what can be done to bypass this.
What dept does your friend work in? Mine read about what's going on when and stuff but they didn't give him exact info like how or what the limit was. Edge don't even work when I try so that wouldnt be right because it takes 5 minutes to load a Facebook status.. anyway whatever happens I hope the limit is a bit higher then 10 sometimes I hit 16 and I don't do mobile hotspots, and i connect to WiFi at home. Let's hope for a work around if so!

No offense but its people like you is the reason why tethering has been such a huge issue. Tethering (if you are not paying for it) should only be used for necessity or minor things like checking your email, post a Facebook status message, or upload a photo, so that you are not abusing the feature and bogging down the network/tower you are connected to.

why so horrified? if you write a check and there isn't enough cash in the account to cover it, are you surprised when the bank dings your account with a huge fee?
Top 5% users..... yeah right.
We all know how this is going to happened, you hit a certain cap, say about 10GB, then they throttle you to slower then EDGE speeds.
It's all their plan to ruin unlimited data for unlimited data users......
Hopefully though, the cap is high, or they ACTUALLY tell the truth for once and only throttle the top 5%, which I'm probably nowhere near (I use 3-4GB a month), so I really won't have to worry about it, but it sucks for people who use 10-15GB a month without tethering, you must not have wifi around where you normally are. :/

BTW, I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that you can tether if you are rooted. From what I was reading it seemed that the people that were doing this were not being charged by AT&T. Although I only read a few posts and don't know the details.
I'm sure someone here can clarify further.
Ive Seen it in Stow, Akron, and Canton.
Sooo fast
Ah, can't wait for it to get around Cincinnati.
Yeah about month ago i saw in chapel hill area and tried to do few quick speed test inside a building and speeds were just ok. I think AT&T is building it first in akron and then cleveland. Bc still have to see LTE show up on phone in cleveland area.

in regards to tethering, they can tell. When you tether they can tell by looking at the data packets. I'm not sure about the specifics, but the type of data packets or the signature or something changes so they can tell.
That's how they could tell with the iPhones, I'm sure its the same thing regardless of which phone you have because its more of a network thing.
I tether, with my old iPhone and this phone. But I'm not a heavy user (almost never even get close to 1gb of data). Never been yelled at.
If you do get called out on it, just play dumb. Just be like oh I didn't know I was doing that. I run Ubuntu from my phone, that might be it. You know, stuff that the representative won't know how to deal with / can't deal with it.

I was afraid that was going to be the answer. maybe i'll give it a few more months before i try.
I just got online and checked my data usage on AT&T, and I used about 100 Gig this pay period...good thing i have unlimited after being transferred from Alltel
How much do you all use?
100gig WTF ARE YOU using that much data for .. BTW this is nothing more than a e-peenis stroking contest ... and will turn south REALLY fast

~0.75-1.5 GB.... never crossed 1.5 GB. Typical - 0.75 - 1.25 GB in any given month, including use of maps, etc. I don't stream music or videos, except maybe once in a while when totally bored.
And as far as using as WiFi at home, get a basic cable internet for like 20 or 30 a month. You'll atleast help people connected to your tower get better speeds.

Alright this is more of the questions for the AT&T network not really the Samsung Infuse. Anyway, I want to upgrade my phone later on I will get the Galaxy Note 2 . Now, I'd like to upgrade but my parents do not want to allow it. I do however, have a store near me. Couldn't I just go to the store with my phone number or do I need any other information to help me upgrade ? Any advice is helpful thank you. I should probably also say that I don't have an upgrade available both my parents do, but i think i could use one of theirs. Im under 18, would that stop me either? I believe they will require authorization from the one in charge of the account (one of your parents I suppose).
And not so sure about the upgrades, but I believe each one is specific to a phone line.

Is your present phone a 4g? If it is, you can go on line with ATT and upgrade one of your parents phones. When the phone arrives, all you have to do is switch out your sim card.....all your number info and all that stuff is on the sim card.
If you go into the store and you are not the account holder, they won't even talk to you.

I'm thinking this is a great way to get yourself into hot water pretty quick.
A better idea would be to work out something with your parents.
Try this link
Upgrading will extend your parent's contract another 2 years.
I'm sure they'll definitely notice that.
To qkster, I'll try again lol when the time comes. I've got a lot of money that I've earned/gotten, and they won't let me use any of it! It sits there (in a safe place, easily access able to me), finally gave up and spent some of it on my tab 2. I love that, and my phone but the gnote 2 could make things a lot easier, use less devices.

I'm sure they would not know, my mom lost a 7 year old flip phone with no plan to get her another soon, and my dad has a 5 year old flip phone too. They do not care about tech. Likely that since your parents are not tech savvy you can log into the att online portal using a username and password combo that they would normally use. From there you can add yourself as an authorized user and go into a store and wreak havoc. But honesty is the best policy.

And just think, if something were to happen and they had to switch off of at&t or wanted to go somewhere else for service it would require them to pay roughly 800 bucks to terminate the contract. Not to mention the mandatory data charge for upgrading to a smart phone. They'd probably notice the extra 15 to 30 bucks a month.
As a parent myself who until this question thought I was still 'cool' (I'm slowly turning into a grumpy old man and its pissing me off) I'd most likely kill my kids of they tried what you are asking.

Hi guys,
My contract is up for renewal, which means I'm upgrading from the SK4G.
Price: $70 + shipping
Condition: Good - minor scuff/scratch on back. Miniscule scratch on screen.
It currently has one of the Glorious Overdose roms, but since I am going to be wiping all my data I can ODIN it for you or flash over whatever rom you want. If you just want it as is because you want to flash yourself, then I will send it with all 3rd party/user apps/info wiped.
I'm actually not "upgrading" so to speak. I was very disappointed with this iteration of the SK and have purchased a PV300GR (LX 2009) from Amazon. This version can still access data with a bit of tweaking and has GPS, which are really the only two things I need it to do. I'm still holding out hope for a new SK but until then I'm just going to use a phone I am happy with.
I can attach pictures if anyones interested.
I don't mean to hack but can you explain what kinds of hacking you speak of? Is this the tmobile branded lx you bought and plan to use with tmobile?
Out of curiousity, I own an LX 09' version Sidekick. How exactly do you tweak this to have data??? It sounds crazy because there are no longer running danger servers. /: It'd be cool to try out though.
Thanks

Shadowscott - not too sure what you mean by hack?
Zydrate_blue - the t-mobile branded LX 09 is PV300 and is not capable of receiving data because they were forced to use the danger servers. The later released PV300GR used the danger servers while they were up, but are not locked to them which means data can be hooked up by changing the APN via network settings. Yes, I will be using this phone on a T-mobile plan. You can find the GR on Amazon, but make sure you check the seller because some people are shipping out the 300 thinking its the same thing (happened to me).
