hello,
first of all, i love follwing the tech and seeing present devices getting better with better softwares.. i own a xoom for 2 months and i really love it.. but -like most of the people here, probably- i believe the software is not fully optimized for the hardware.. in my computers i always used nvidia products, because i believe it did its job very good even when the ati competitors were better on the paper.. so here i am with a tegra 2 SoC and i cant find any game as smooth as ipad games..
now -in addition to my xoom- i was planning to buy a samsung galaxy tab 10.1 (one is for my girlfriend, one is for me but mostly to be used together) but when i was making some research, last night i found nvidia ULP and ipad 2 comparisons and could not believe the results.. ipad 2 was 2-6 times faster/better than the motorola xoom.. imeedieatly i downloaded the same tests and i ran them too and ended up with same results unfortunately.. and then i downloaded lots of high quality games and every time i ended between 20-25 FPS.. i think it is not satisfying..
i dont believe apple has the alien technology, i think the software makes the difference.. so i asked myself to questions;
"what do i plan to use my tablet for" and
"what is going to happen when iOS5 and ICS comes"???
my expectations from ISC is to bring more optimisation to our devices, i cant say no to new cool feautures but first i want my existing ones to be perfect...
to be honest, i can not answer both questions... i can only answer what i want from a tablet.. and again to be honest i guess i am hungry for performance, even though i do not need it. so in every tests tegra 2 cpu beats a5, and the web pages (the first thing i want my tablet to do professionally) are super faster loading then the ipad2 ... besides i love customizable home screen definition, i love being easy to carry my media from the computer or to the computer with one cable without any software.. and i love being able to connect my hard drive so that i can give up from my laptop once i buy a bluetooth keyboard..
but my second question; what is going to happen when iOS5 and ICS here? will iOS5 catch up with android by beating it in CPU and usefullness tests too or will ICS cacth up with the smoothnes and games performance and the promises they gave?
in my country asus transformer, acer iconia a500, ipad 2 16gb, motorola xoom are same prices and samsung galaxy tab is about 40 dollars more expencive in second hands or abroad products.. so i dont care about the price here.. what i am asking is which one is going to better according to your opinion between all these devices? and which one is going to give me more development and more increase in perfection?
i am so confused and every opinion is wellcomed.. i am planning to use it mostly for web browsing as a laptop replecement, gaming, photo and video making/editing/storing and -if possible- using engineering programs like the icircuit in ipad or the autocad in galaxy s (i have it on my galaxy s but i could not run it in tablet)..

as you are FULLY aware... we are talking apples and oranges here
1. iOS is for people who want something out of the box.. not worried about setting much up and have a billion games... for now atleast (something my grandma would like to be honest)
2. Android OS is far superior with whats under the hood and the customizations and endless tweeking...
my simple answer is... do you want something the same as every other...er... individual (*snickers* - as the ad's would have you believe).. or something that is truly your OWN device
i bet 9 out of 10 people in the xoom forum has something that is entirely unique to the next... i love this aspect... i like having something a little different.. i like to tweek untill i break it or have the best device out there.. 3/4 of the time if there is an app for the iOS there is a better app for android.. for example.. there is only crap remote mouse apps for iOS and yet i have unified remote full for android a masterpiece and i can control nearly every aspect of my computer via a remote with my android devices (yes there is splashtop HD for iOS and android but this is not always a viable solution and trust me i have both)... this is just one example as i cbf putting down the many apps i have that are better (foto tile slideshow - the live wallpaper is another AWESOME app that comes to mind)
last and not least... lets remember software for both devices are going crazy.. however now the tables have turned with android leading the way and iOS playing catch up and ice cream is going to be one hell of an update to which im pretty sure xoom will be compatible =]

I agree with the above poster...and will add that no matter what we wish, we will never have the very best, fastest,most bleeding-edge device because once we buy, there will always be something newer, faster, better, etc. IOS gives you what it wants you to have. Android lets you have (or create) what you want.
If you are rooted, with Tiamat Hammerhead Rom and the Tachi oc gpu kernel, and a launcher like ADW Ex, could the Xoom be any smoother?
It does make a difference how hands-on you want to be.

i guess i am trying to look at it as computers.. when i had my desktop it was not a big deal when one of the parts was getting old/slower becuase i was able to change only that one without spending big money... but once that world (both hardware and games) got larger it got harder to follow and find the best one.. so i felt like i was lost between nvidia and ati products.. then i switched to laptops when i became more mobile in daily life and when laptops offered more graphic power.. and i always thought GPU first and the ram 2nd, and the HDD 3rd.. CPU was ok to wait.. because CPU tech is already a lot higher than todays daily process needings..
so with the same feeling i have the same reflex to go for the better GPU one.. i feel like the weaker GPU one is going to get old faster/earlier.. this scares me..
and there is also the untidyness in the android world.. there are hundreds of phones with different specs and only a few of them has the full control of every feauture android can give you.. so when you buy a cheap android phone you are not only lacking some hardware, but also being some short on the software too.. they solved this mostly by making the tegra 2 the center of the tablets and i believe ICS will bring even more tidyness to the world just like apple world.. but i still have my suspicious with ICS, because i have read an opinion here in xda, he says ; ICS is a big development for 2.3 devices not for the 3.x devices.. but i want to believe better drivers will come and help us benefit from our hardware better.. nvidia has done that before when the game crysis was out, they increased the overall performance by %10 for every 8xxx card with a new firmware..
besides i made some research and some experiments; apperiantly this ULP is first defining the need of the FPS and then setting it as a limit to keep the power comsumption low.. so even though it can go faster or produce more FPS it stays in the limit of 28 especially in the desktop while ipad can go with 60 FPS.. i guess this is excatly what makes me jealous.. because i feel like my tablet does not have power to do that...
so basicly, i do not like apple anymore after they sue everyone they see as a thread... but i also believe the complains i made (the belief of the GPU being much more worse than the ipad 2 GPU) scares me.. i put my faith on the new software before, to nokia.. and every time they have given a new software to their "smartphones" they ruined it even more.. so far, in android, everything is just going good.. every new version came with better optimizations and i want to believe it is going to be like this in the future..
i guess my opinions and fears are mostly emotional and coming from my unfortunate experiences.. but i get attached to every device of mine and i want them to be good enough and last long enough .. so i do not want to feel like i am buying something to be old so quick under the shadow of new coming kal-el and already existing apple ipad 2..
Buy a xoom and root it! You have the use of SD card, flash drives, and USB hdd's. My wife looked at the options and realized she takes photos and needs access to her camera and to her hdd she uses to store those photos. Not one other tablet can do what the xoom can do! Sure it has some flaws, but at the same time it has less of those flaws than any tablet I have tested so far. My Logitech wireless mouse works, and every other device I have at my house. One cable to do it all, not several diff things like the tab 10.1. You want a custom PC, then here it is!

Maybe you should just be prepared to buy and sell whatever you no longer want so you can buy something new.Unfortunately none of us, except e.mote can tell the future.
I guess your points are valid considering alot if the economic uncertainty.. However one must argue that the ipad in all its glory is not a technological advancement.. Think about it.. U can do some neat things yet you cant replace a desktop with it.. Yet the Android comes so close it can almost blur the line entirely.. You can also try and get a windows 7 tab for cheaper as i was looking at these but i weighed up the usefulness and the tech side in me and now people watch me screw around with the xoom on the train and how individualistic it is and then my phone is a new avenue for full customization.. Sure they are not for all and its funny to watch the smartest people i know fumble with such a device and stick to apple babble like its the be all and get slugged a premium its great to see the sheep follow =]

Yesterday i found an ipad2 from a friend and put the xoom and the ipad on the table together and decided to make both devices very tired with my expectations.. I wanted to see which one was going to give up first (or which one i was foing to give up first ) i jailbreaked the ipad and have already rooted my xoom.. First did web experience, turned flash off and let them race .. Xoom was showing off in the beginning.. But once the tabs were more than 6 it started to slow down, on the other hand ipads slowing down was like this; wheb i cliked on a tab my waiting time extended lineerly with the quantity of tabs.. Then i looked at the photos and videos but apperiantlly itunes is tuning photos to a lower size when sending them to ipad.. So i did not like this.. Because i like to carry my stuff.. What if i wanted to carry the original sized photos to another device? Ipad failed here.. But then i nova2 in xoom, and it felt so bad.. Like 15-25 fps.. Dungeon defenders is not so different either.. But i kept testing and ipad kept failing.. Espesially in file management and easy file transferring and independence lets xoom to be the leader.. But then i learned google bought moto.. And ICS is planning for new quad core tegra3 platform or some other quad core platform with so much more powerfull gpu s.. I felt like ourtablets have been sold us ust to be temprorary leaders of the leaders.. I mean i paid this money to this tablet to have the dominant of the market when ICS is out.. But apperiantly ICS will come with new dominants.. So i will feel like i paid not only for a temprory OS but also a temprorary hardware.. I know , no hardware ia immortal but i am afraid i wont be able to have benefit of android world once the quad cores are out.. I know this hecause when i had galqxy s i was able to do anything in android world but now i have galaxy ace qnd i hardly cqn listen to rqdio akd write this at the same time.. It is lqgging as hell.. So this fear of being outdated in the very early future is taking over me.. I now understand why all the idevice owners are so cool about anything because they dont have to think about being outdated anytime.. But i have to think about overxloxking my device to play a game my galaxy s or iphone 3gs is already capqble of playing out of the box..
I love android world and i really want it to be better and i have read it was going to be 1.8 times faster and better when the ICS is out.. I want to bwlieve this but i qlso do not want my device outdated before at least, one year..

essentially... when do u want a device... NOW or NEVER?.. there is always going to be a newer better device in the future... why did you buy your phone when u did when there are better phones out now or the future... same with your computer... same crap... if you wait for the next one you will never have anything and never enjoy the benefits of such a device... personally im happy to have a device for 12 months maybe less and grab the next newest bit... because someone else in my family will benefit form the older software and i continue with the newest gadget
This is my sentiment exactly. You sound like a mouse who is caught running on a treadmill. Get off and relax a bit. Enjoy your Xoom or give it to your lucky girlfriend and get something else. Personally, I've gone thru three Android tablets just since November, and I'll be keeping my Xoom for a while...there's still so much app development that needs to happen to catch up to the tablet form-factor/resolution, and to exploit tegra 2 ---it will be a while until quad cores are fully exploited, I'm sure.

^^ exactly... this is my second tablet in less than a year and just the difference between froyo and honeycomb is astounding... i did my research before buying this tab.. in fact from my first experience i didn't want another tab at all... i despise apple products on general principle (not relevant but yeh) so it took alot of research and convincing about another tab.... i was going to buy a galaxy tab 10.1 yet upon buying it at auction i came across the xoom.. and viewed the true capabilities and noted that the galaxy tab is just a android iOS device and the xoom is a true android device and something that can fulfill my experimental side..
Just buy the iPad 2.

i am only fan of people who develope, share, help and moreover ask to themselves and try to answer what they are doing with their devices and what they are planning to add to this in the future.. i am not fan of companies..
i know myself, i did this mistake before; i saw the 60 FPS shiny world of the iphone and when i was most bored with my lag-crazy nokia i swicthed to it (3gs) and found myself trying to buy a perfect book page by page and i was not able to choose the chapters..
when i had iphone i tried to customize the hardware limitations, unfortunately it was impossible.. then i tried to make things easier (like tried to get rid of itunes) that failed too.. and after 2 months i realised my little shiny and so called super optimized phone was lagging, this was when i learned iOS was able to lag too..
then after another failing nokia symbian update experience i tried android with galaxy s.. and that world my friend, became my addiction..
however; when i was making surfing throuh other forum sites i ran into some opinions and fears. they have become my fears too.. now i am making a summary of them in very short sentences, so i believe i will make myself more clear;
first thing like i said i always believed in every mobile device the GPU gets older first.. so, especially in my laptops i always tried to choose the better GPU over te CPU or the other specs.. and one day i was reading reviews about tegra 2 potential but then i saw ipad 2 was -sometimes- up to 5 times faster than it in graphic tests... that made me scared..
the second thing; i am fully aware of that our hardware is as valuable as its software and nokia failed me about it again and again.. one day, i found an web page which says ICS will make the performance 1.8 times better.. i assume (i want to assume) this is mostly graphic performance because CPU performance is already the best but i thing nvidia drivers needs to be optimized.. so the best thing is to wait for ICS and then decide about how android-tablet worlds growing bigger and success.. but, on the other hand, we are waiting for the tomorrows technology with yesterdays device.. this is my second fear, because i heard the quad core products are being released in this fall.. i am scared of being outdated even before i can enjoy the full performance of my xoom..
i have just shared these two fears and then realised apple owners did not have them.. so i asked here if apple is better at them.. it was not an "should i buy apple or android" topic.. but if people said "tegra 2 and honeycomb are temprory and will be history together soon and the real devices are the quad-core ones" i would go for an ipad 2 (maybe) for 6-9 months and then go back to android..
and not to forget; in my years, i have forgatten lots of device i used with their good or bad sides but i have never forgatten the people i shared knowledge and experience with.. and i am a fan of them..

There is only one thing that has failed to stop the use of my $3500 alienware laptop that is 4yrs old. It burns discs and I am in sure the xoom can use a USB DVD burner. So can the ipad2 support an external USB hdd? Can you use all of Facebook in the browser on the ipad2? Can you push the ipad2 beyond what the box says? NO! That is why I did not even look at apple. My wife does photography and apple could not supply what she demanded it to do, so I bought her a xoom too. So far I have not seen one other tablet come close to it. I took into account something new will come out later, but at the same time it will be an infant in it's release as well. Not much using dual core anyway. Apple is for the kids that can't jump off the cliff into the water. Android is for those wanting to live on the edge and beyond. I can work, play, relax, and tinker with my xoom. Ipad2 can't deliver for me at all. I really think you have to ask yourself what do you want your tablet to do?

thank you.. i have narrowed down the equation to samsung tab 10.1 vs xoom .. i am trying to choose between them now.. i saw samurai 2 vengence and some other games and know i am so sure it is good enough as a toy too..
None of the tegra games seem to work right on honeycomb. I do like scrabble from ea. And cordy is kinda fun. Played one of the sniper games and it wasn't bad at all. Most of the games you have to buy and I just haven't found a good one I like. I wish halo reach could be done. Then I would be set!

I bought my Xoom for a very specific reason. At the time, it was the only device running Honeycomb, and the only (major) tablet with an OS specifically designed for tablets. The iPad is great and all, but, at the end of the day, it's just a really big iPhone. I already have an iPhone, and I don't need two. The apps are better on iOS for stuff like games and cutesy programs, but better on Android for stuff like tweaking programs or developer programs.
Really, the decision comes down to whether you're going to use the device like a "normal" user or a "power" user. If all you're going to do is browse the net and check email (and play games), get the iPad. If you want some power user features (better desktop remote control, better ssh, better customization, nonstandard kernels, rooting that does a lot more, etc), then grab the Xoom.
Generally speaking, Apple's products cater to the non-tech-savvy, which sometimes annoy those of us that are tech savvy. Android, though, caters to the more tech savvy. This is why Android is more complicated to use and it also explains the app selections.
As the commercial goes, "it just works". This is true. Apple's devices just work. They stay in control of your device in an attempt to make your life easier and the device easier to use. Android doesn't do this, but it also has a lot more bugs and such (hence better for tech savvy people).
So, to sum everything up, if you're going to use it for just normal stuff (browsing, email, games) and you're not overly tech savvy, get the iPad. If you're tech savvy and plan to remote control computers or other such advanced features, get the Xoom.

Android tablets are no more "iPad knockoffs" than Ford vehicles are Mercedes knockoffs. They are different products for different audiences.
Android is for people who want to get things done using a tablet. The alleged "weak supply" of apps hasn't stopped me from finding an apps (usually 20 or 30 of them) to do anything I want to do on my tablet. Perhaps that's because I can spell, know English, and have a certain amount of critical decision-making ability (as witnessed by my ownership of a $27 million company).
Apple products are for people with lots of money, very little intelligence, and a "need" for 500 "different" fart apps

Had a Xoom. ya it had flash, sorta. caused more problems and restarts then it was worth. Got tired of the problems, and traded it for a first gen ipad, with half the ram, half the storage and half as many processors. No crashes, surfs faster, and has fewer problems with web-sites, even though it doesn't have flash. Everything about it's UI is smoother, and easier to understand. I guess Android works ok, but not sure that hating Apple is a good enough reason to find Android better.

What about those of us who were smart enough to not invest in a proprietary DRM based format. My Android apps will work on many phones, tablets, and desktops with Bluestacks or an x86 build of Android.
For music I prefer a universal DRM free format like MP3. I also will never put iTunes on my computer. I don't need some big bloated program to sync my music and apps. I can browse and install new apps from the market all through my browser. I can sync music with my android devices by plugging them into the USB port and running a simple batch file I created that uses xcopy to sync folders.
For ebooks I would rather buy in a format that will work on more devices. Even though its DRM, Amazon's Kindle Books seem to be the best option at this point, since you can read them on many more devices.

I almost totally agree with everything you said there. However a couple of points.
1/ EPUB is the industry standard, it's much more widespread and books are usually cheaper than Amazons locked in "itunes-like" ebook store. Google Books and Kobo have 3m EPUB titles, Amazon have 750k
2/ MP3 is great, it's universal, but it's also now very old, rubbish sounding and rubbish compression rates. M4A (AAC) is ISO ratified has almost as good support as MP3 these days, and is much more efficient at compressing, which means you can have either smaller files or better sounding files. I re-ripped my entire music collection to AAC/M4A and havn't looked back, it sounds much better than MP3 and the collection is still 20% smaller in disk space, it's also more suited to streaming.

But Honeycomb tablets with Tegra2 are not really that great though, I'm happy I didn't have to get a tablet last year, because I don't like Apple and I don't like Tegra2/Honeycomb.
But it looks much better now, a 2012 tablet with ICS and with Tegra 3 or better SOC that can play my actual media files (720p/1080p MKV) is something I'd actually want to buy.
And my other main purpose with a tablet is web browsing, and this is also something that sucks with Honeycomb compared to iPad or my Galaxy S2 which both have butter smooth browsers.
This is also much better with ICS luckily

Since the 3g there has not been any true innovations to the device. There were 2 major software updates, one added a poor attempt at multitasking and the other copied notifications from android/windows. Who in their right mind would update from a 4 to a 4s? And why would anyone need an iPad 2 if they own an iPad? The ecosystem is self contained which is ok for some but people are shelling out hundreds every year to buy the same exact device.
I had a 3g and loved it. When the 4 came out I was like what the f is this? Why would I lock in for another 2 years for the same exact phone? On the other side in the same time frame android has gone from froyo to gingerbread, introduced honeycomb and then blended ics together. each being a major change from the last. Yes there has been bugs but that is part of the pain of actually developing new software. Now add all the variations sense, blur, touch wiz. etc and the rapid updates to these and you have unique user experiences. Google gets criticized for creativity, while apple gets rewarded for playing it safe

With the greatest respect I have to ask where you get such dumb ideas from as all your posts at xda are so vehemently anti android yet absolutely factually incorrect.
Explain what it is that makes android only barely usable if rooted. My dad and my girlfriend are your average non techy people and both have unrooted android devices that they love and both customised them a lot, and neither have had trouble with their systems so to say its unusable etc with no evidence is rubbish.
So with respect to your post perhaps you could explain why people must hate apple if they use android, why you think android sucks (reasons, not vague rhetoric) and why in a number of threads you keep saying you have to root android to make it usable when its ios that has to have warranty voided to do much with it.
I genuinely wonder sometimes if your not another poster who hates android and posting under a second account. I doubt you are but at least give reasons not vague nonsense please.

Obvious troll is obvious. The end user benefits from Android's openness by being able to build and distribute custom ROMs without copyright infringement. Many of us thoroughly enjoy flashing ROMs, rooting, etc. We aren't doing it only to make the device usable.
The Transformer Prime is my first Android device... it crashes a half dozen times a day. I think it is a nice piece of kit, with buggy software. Im not trading it for an IPad, but Im not satisfied as I feel I should be after dropping 650 for this thing. IDK who you blame, running ICS, latest patches hasn't fixed the random reboots, wacko video artifacts after using it a few minutes, slow browsing, buggy touchscreen keyboards, apps that freeze doing the most basic operations... is it the apps, the hardware, or android?!?! I let my kid play some random apps and I get an email that I just spent $20 for some BS in game credits that don't even require a password to steal money from your account!!!! The developer doesnt respond and there's no recourse through the android marketplace...
THE WHOLE MESS IS HALF BAKED. Instead of blaming cnet for telling the truth how about you fix the problems!?!?!

Watching Peter pan (for free, love ice stream) with my kids on my tv using my unusable semi functioning crap android tablet. Last week I watched the UFC pay per view using this thing the call flash.
For video editing try google video editor. Have not used it much as it is made for 10" tabs and mine is 7" so it is not scaled correctly. Appears to have some of the features you want

Welcome to the land of Android, prepare for a bumpy ride. I've had similar experiences with both Xoom(possibly the worst piece of consumer electronics I ever used) and Galaxy Tab(plastic iPad knockoff with the same crappy software). Browsing on both tablets was terrible, the browser froze, and oftentimes just randomly closed with no way of recovering open tabs. They were both useless as far as media playback since apparently Tegra 2 doesn't support high profile HD video, which makes me question the sanity of the idiot Google engineer who decided to make it the reference platform for HC. At the end of the day I've come to realize that even though it doesn't have all of the "features" of Android tablets the iPad is so far superior to the Google sanctioned junk that it's not even a fair comparison.

Yeah I've tried Google Video Editor... its crap... couldn't import videos or photos to edit, so I didn't even get past the first hurdle. Maybe they'll get it past the beta stage someday, but for now its not very good.

I'm just having a hard time making a decision, I'm not bothered about 1080p playback 720p is fine with me, must have a decent processor/gpu as I like to play alot of games as well, must be android only
at least 5mp camera, preferable with the option of being able to root and ICS
do i get a 3g sim or non 3g? what the heck do i do?
hdmi out is a selling point, dual core is a selling point
I won't be making calls on it but I might want to use 3g+ on it if im out and about
rooting and customisation very important
any one got any decent suggestions,

The Asus transformer series are really nice, I'm looking around to get a Samsung Galaxy Tab myself soon, it looks quiet promising.
I would recommend the Motorola Xoom. The development for the device has been stellar, the devs are awesome and has an unlockable bootloader. Cm9 and other wonderful custom roms like Team EOS nightly builds are solid, fast and will make others envious. The Xoom feels solid and is well built. The screen is not as nice as the ones found on the Asus transformer or Samsung Tab but it isn't bad either. Those other screens also have their cons due to the nature of their technology. There have also been a decent amount of complaints about Asus build quality and Samsung lack of timely updates. The Xoom was the first to get ICS, the first to get a cornerstone build, the first to be officially supported tab for Cm9 and continues to have the latest android enhancements via Team EOS roms. Also the proprietary charger charges the xoom pretty fast and the accessories are cheap now due to it being out for a while. Because it was the first to market, it doesn't mean the it is obsolete. I got a bit of a bad rep in the beginning due to screw ups on Motorola part but all is well now.
I have a 4g Xoom and use it every day. I run the Team EOS nightlys, with the device overlooked to 1.4 (i can get 1.6, but not needed) and undervolted to save juice. Feel free to check out the development thread to verify my claims. Cheers!

Don't get the xoom 2. The bootloader is locked, there isn't nearly as much dev support, no custom roms, no micro sd card slot (deal breaker), more expensive and not all the much of an improvement. It also isn't a Google experience device.
Yea, this I will admit the the screen is better and the writing tech is nice. But you will kick yourself for not going with a better supported device. Before I purchase anything, I checked to see how the community support of the device is and recommend that others do the same. I don't want to solely rely on manufacturers for support.
To be honest I would wait for the Windows 8 tablets if you truly cannot buy an Apple device, as all of the Android tablets still suck(to put it mildly). The iPad is just in a whole another league right now, and ICS didn't make the situation any better. They all lag like crazy, even the 7.7 inch Exynos-equipped Tablet from Samsung. The tablet experience just isn't there yet for android.
What ever you do never get an LG V900 or V909, cant be rooted, or just shortly until you reboot.
Unless you like stock and no root.

Wow really? What tablets running ICS have you owned? My Xoom running Team EOS ICS 4.0.3 is smooth an rarely lags.
The ipad hardware is in another league but the software is still Crap. What good is having all of that power and design but only being able to do 1/4 of what an android tablet can do? Also you are limited to whatever apps Apple deems fit in their one appstore. The other other alternative is to jailbreak and uses cydia. Don't even get me started on having to rely on a pc or mac to back up apps and settings usin itunes. On android I just use titanium backup and clockwork recovery to make a full back up to my micro sd card. I have been through that Crap an will never go back. Have you?
I also like how people are assuming windows 8 is going to be the answer for everyone. It can't run your normal desktop apps, I will be more expensive, it will be locked down, possibly more vulnerable due to it being based of windows and missing so awesome features due to limited api access or something similar. Keep in mind the Android was never intended to take on desktop OSs and the ios doesn't come any closer to accomplishing that. ios is worst. I don't care if here are 200,000+ apps, how many fart emulators and angry birds clones do you need? I how many apps do people on average even bother downloading from the appstore? I can tell you it is not 200,000 or even 50.
I will admit that the stock rom may have its issues, the custom roms usually fixes and enhances the user experience. I have only used the Motorola Xoom and Asus Transformer. Both have Cm9 and Team EOS ICS 4.0.3 nightlys available for them that run like butter. I never use stock rom.
ICS is there in tablet experience and will be getting better with release of 4.0.5 and 4.0.4. I wish people wih limited hands on experience would stop making blanket general statements. Not having the opportunity to tinker wih various hardware and software is one thing, but being unsatisfied wih the out of he box experience is another. This is XDA, experiment, create and discover.
ASUS Transformer Series are good and popular
@runhopskipjump: Way to go turning this into an Apple vs Android thread. Read any reputable review site that actually have an objective viewpoint on the matter and you'll come to realize exactly what everyone else has(except for some die-hard android fans): the android experience does not translate well onto tablets yet.
I love android, and have been waiting on an android tablet that would match the iPad, like the SGS did with the iPhone, but alas no tablet has done so yet and with the new iPad, apple leapfrogged the android manufacturers by a year, again.
The only tablet I would even remotely consider is the updated Transformer Prime TF700, but that won't be out until June.
Windows 8 is going to bridge the gap between the PC and Tablet space, allowing tablets to run desktop apps and vice versa. I hate having to have two devices, when one should be enough. The battery life of the current crop of Windows 7 tablets just isn't quite there yet and is the only obstacle keeping me from buying one, and I am hoping that the arm version of Windows 8 is going to remedy that.

i think apple did the right thing here but I can't support a company like apple
the transformer prime sucks and they have made a new model of the same prime tablet due to issues with the back aluminum and some slight enhancements,
so in a way there is a flaw with those tablets right there and to overcome those you need to purchase the even new model of the prime,
I don't want to be running around, I just want something that will work hardware wise, and the software I can work around with custom roms,

Covers all my needs, has great ROMs - I've only tried overcome, but there are others - and is overclockable.
Now that I've found the switchme app - me, my wife and child all have our separate accounts on it.
Whatever you get, make sure you have enough internal space for such an app.
It's very convenient for more than one user to be able to have their own google account on a tablet, since they often are shared my more than one user.

If money is no object, you have two choices. Either you want a tablet can double down as a netbook and you go for the upcoming ASUS Transformer tablet (skip the Prime, I've heard from several people that it has connectivity issues), or you're more into consuming media, in which case Samsung Galaxy Tab is really good.
At this point it slowly starts to become a matter of taste. The top competitors are pretty close to each other. I'm curious about the upcoming Google-branded tablet too - I kicked the HTC Sense to the curb after a mere 2 weeks and replaced it with AOSP, so I don't put great trust in third party shells.
Well I was very skeptical on buying this thing after reading the complaints on this forum. This is my first tablet. I have had the chance to mess with ipads and galaxy tabs at work since I am in charge of mobile devices. I have to say this one blows them out of the water.
I have not had io issues as described here. I copied down 4 movies that were about a gig at piece. While doing that I was surfing and configuring apps and it was smooth. There were one or two brief hicups but nothing big. Performs way better than my netbook. The people on here complaining may have a hardware issue.
I have not used the stock browser but dolphin is very fast.
The only complaint was that I have gotten 2 spontaneous reboots. Hopefully they fix that in a future update. I'm taking it on the road this weekend so I will get a chance to see how it does.

One thing you learn about device forums is that is usually is dominated by people that complain about issues and rarely do people come on here to gloat about how great something is. You do have to take complaints on a pretty intense community such as XDA with a grain of salt. If you read some sports forums it is mostly filled with people complaining about their team. Not sure why that always is but people need somewhere to blow off steam.

Same for me, first tablet I have purchased for myself though have used plenty of others. I love it! I do see a bit of lag when installing and downloading several app updates that I don't notice when doing the same thing on my Galaxy S2 phone. But it sounds like those issues will be fixed eventually. The only other problem is the slight delay in bluetooth audio that makes watching videos with external bluetooth speakers unusable. I also picked up the TF201 keyboard and Best Buy and it works perfectly.
The numerous butt-hurt from people on these forums almost deterred me. I have owned an Ipad, Ipad 2, and Asus TF300T. The UI is not as smooth as iOS but I will never ever go back to Apple. Android tablets just offer so much more even if the app market isn't so developed for tablets yet (and it will be soon thanks to the 720p Google Nexus). I don't have to put up with a lot of iOS crap and my UI is beautiful as well as functional. I'm glad I didn't listen to any of the butthurt people or I would've missed out on a great device.
I'm not sure which one to get android is my favorite but every note 10.1 i try is laggy and stutters. I never owned a iPad but i tried it at best buy and it felt so smooth and fast and the screen was awesome except the screen shape. Does any one own both to tell me your opinion about speed and every day use.

I have to admit that the note 10.1 ICS is laggy but, the jelly bean update is coming and it's pretty fast, no more lag or stutter. Sorry but this tablet with jelly bean version will be way better than the ipad 4. The pen and multitasking on the tablet is amazing. Im sick of ipad. Just got rid of my ipad 3 and got new note 10.1 and i'm loving it. We are still waiting for Jelly bean update to come.
My Note 10.1 doesn't lag at all on ICS. Though the JC update should have some performance improvements. Some people have already gotten the JB update, but my device (N8010) hasn't yet.

Yeh, I have to admit I didnt notice any lag on ICS either. Though I came from an ipad1, so maybe thats why!
I'm on a JB rom at the moment (I have an 8010, using an 8000 rom) and it still seems smooth.
Have to say, the reason I got the note was because of the wacom digitiser. If you aren't going to make good use out of it, then the choice would be between the iPad4 or the Nexus10.
If you want to make use of the pressure sensitivity, then the iPad4 is going to be of no use to you.
So depending on what you want to use the tablet for... I'd say your choice should really be between the Nexus or the Note.

If you enjoy using drawing of any kind I can't reccomend this pad enough. There are a few apps that give professional level art programs. My favorite being tvpainter. They have a free beta that lasts till February. And the fact that wacom helped make the screen was more than enough reason for me to make my decision.
I'm still not sure , the only time I'm going to use the pen is for notes and editing pics. I'm mostly going to browse the web and watch and upload YouTube videos. My brother has the nexus 10 and it not for me the screen is nice but that's about it. I don't like apple but i like how they have lots of apps optimized for tablets when android app are just scaled up phone apps

If you need to take handwritten notes then you have to get the Note. Otherwise the iPad is a better option.
Again, it's how you use it. Apple is a locked down system. You can only use it to Apples stringent rules... Sure you can jailbreak but then you have to wait for someone to JB the next update or get left behind...
Note 10.1, and Android in general, allows you the option of rooting fairly easily. You can control what you want and how you use it, plug those pesky security risks, and don't kid yourself Apple has them too, and change the ui to what you want. It allows you to put what you need where and make the device yours... Apple is a sterile hospital room in comparison..
I don't know why any tabs you used were stuttery, my experience with the note, ICS and JB, has been fantastic. You need to remember that the demo models in stores are subject to people playing around with them and maxing out the ram usage. Also I know that the stores also load their own app(s) onto the demo models which may cause issues.
ICS was great, JB is phenomenol. I have a 32gb 3G version. I use a 64gb sd card, that's a combined total of 96gb.. Transferring Apps, movies, music and pictures onto the note doesn't require specialised software that has a new update every 2days.
S-pen works wonders, not an artist but I find the s-pen easier to use than the onscreen keyboard. Use handwriting for everything.
And finally, the biggest plus for me was the fact I can make and receive phone calls.... Not using skype or any other 3rd party app but dialling out using my carrier. Not reliant on wifi. I use the bluetooth stylus as its easier to have on me than a headset and I hate sharing my private conversation with the world.....
I have never liked Apple as it is a closed system and there may be an advantage or 2 for that sort of app developement but I can't complain about the apps for Android. You can generally find the same or an equivalent app on Android that you use on IOS.
Essentially the decision is yours, If you are leaning towards Apple, go with it as that's your preference, I don't care as I don't have to live with your decision and you need to go with what you want...
I tried out a note 10.1 in PC world before I bought it. I must have gone in to the store a dozen times, each time the device was extremely laggy and stuttery. I assumed it was because the store devices have demo mode running all the time, plus there were so many apps running that weren't closed down. I got so frustrated in store with the lagyness. But I bought one and it couldn't be more different.....it is really smooth. so it must have been all the crap the store version had running.

If you're an 'appy' type of guy and want everything to 'just work', pick the iPad 4. But if you're the 'tinker' guy and will find the S-pen useful, of course the Note 10.1 will suit you.
Generally though, iOS is smoother than Android, even with Jelly Bean. This comes from a previous iPad owner, now a Note 10.1 owner. I still kind of miss the iPad. If only the apps on Android tablets are as great as on iOS, then I will not miss it anyway.

I just like the tablet optimized apps in the app store. I just ordered the note 10.1. I just wish there was more development and easier ways to mod.

What are the differences between Android tablets (for obvious reasons, we're talking about hardware and tablets of the same family (eg. Tab > Tab 2, TF101 > TF201 > TF300 > TF700))?
Faster/more powerful CPU? More powerful GPU? More RAM? Better camera? Better quality screen? The newer versions of iPads always have some sort of upgrade, hence why people actually upgrade their device. I'm not trying to start a flame-war, but it's clear to me that you're completely ignorant to all things Apple. So my suggestion for you is to stop talking about things that you know nothing about. If you're going to ignore everything about something, you might as well forget that it exists.
Its not only the hardware that's the same with Apple.... IOS promises a host of new features but all it really delivers is a slight improvement, usually a feature that's been available on Android for a few revisions... And this is called "Innovation" whereas Android is then accused of stealing a feature that has been available for a long time....
I don't mind the constant law suits so much as it does push new features and designs out by the companies who probably would rest on their laurels like Apple... However, Apple seems to push the fact that they came up with the idea, they then patent stuff that should have been laughed out of the patent office - really, a rectangular body with rounded corners? I had a Phillips Fizz long before the Iphone ever surfaced and that describes it exactly....
I'm sorry but I thought Innovation and stagnation had 2 different meanings but according to the Apple dictionary they are the same word...

I'm not arguing that everything Apple does is innovative or revolutionary. I just find it stupid for people, like jojo1419, to say that all iPads are the same. If people actually believe that iPad 1 = iPad 4, then wow, that's ignorance at its finest, folks.
And yes, Android does have features that iOS is missing, but one thing I LOVED about my iPad was that apps were actually made for the iPad. I love my Note 10.1, but it's irritating to download an app, expect a nice tablet-friendly experience, and seeing an over-sized mobile UI. Maybe I'm just spoiled by the huge amount of tablet-friendly apps in Apple's App Store and should lower my expectations of apps from the Google Play Store.

I guess you would have to look at the apps you use and think about whether or not you'd care..?
For me, the things I do on my tablet include (but is not limited to because I may forget things):
-web browsing
-redditing
-note taking
-drawing (I suck at this one, but I like doing it )
-reading (pdfs, ebooks, etc.)
-doing homework sets (physics problems in lecture notes)
-watching stuff (like NetFlix because my desktop uses linux)
The only thing I wish Android apps had was an easy way to connect your tablet to mathematica on your computer or something. I don't want to pay Wolfram any more than I have to so I don't want to buy time on his f*cking servers by using WolframAlpha..
Anyway, my point was that, there is no point here where I would consider Apple to have better "tablet" apps than Android. Mostly because the one thing that MAY be better would be "note apps" except those note apps are usually limited to text or stupid **** that don't apply to the way I want to take notes. But yeah, sure, I guess there are better optimized Angry Birds in the Apple store..?
I agree, alot of people here are total fanboys. Apple may not be the most innovative company, but there innovations are numerous compared to Samsung. For starters maybe the note 10.1 would not even exist if it wasn't for the innovations apple made in the early 90's with the development of the Apple Newton.

I agree wholeheartedly that Apple got the ball rolling and keep it rolling with their idiotic lawsuits however, Apple as a whole has reached a state of stagnation...
They are slow to add extra features into their hardware and software, are limited in a lot of ways with their software and lock everything down. They are all about control, you do it Apples way or no way. Itunes is a mongrel thing to have to use, and no support for video files except mp4.... Waste of time converting EVERYTHING in my library...
The fact they now, for the iphone 5, decided to change the connector to something that doesn't support the old accessories is a bit of a slap in the face for their loyal customers, at least they could have included an adaptor in the box...
If it had of been to the mini usb like most companies have decided should be the standard for mobile phones, fair enough but it is another proprietry connection...
I know samsung use a different USB 30 pin connector for their tabs but all the phones, tablets weren't included in the agreement, have got the standard mini usb adaptor...
Lets be totally clear here, Apple cornered the market, updated a few things then sat on their laurels until their martket was being threatened by a competitor. They then did a kneejerk reaction and a quick catchup that was still behind the competitor but followed that up with a marketing blitz that wa phenominol to make people believe that they are "Innovative" and that everyone else wasn't. When that seemed to be failing them they decided to slam the competition with frivolous lawsuits for patents that were obviously a massive waste of time...
The last win they had did them more harm than good as they pointed out that the competition was essentially selling the same thing for a lot cheaper and their bottom line will continue to drop now this has been divulged.
I personally know a hard core Apple fanboy who has crossed to the darkside, his girlfriend now has an SGS3 and he went the way of Windows 8 phone... Apple is shooting themselves in the foot by lagging behind in the software and hardware that the consumers want.

Gonna go ahead and play devil's advocate:
Connector: They had the same connector for a DECADE. Micro USB is fiddly and aren't any docks for it because there's no standard so you need *gasp* a proprietary dock for you exact handset! With Apple you could have bought a dock for your iPod 5 years ago and it would still work with your iPhone 4 with the adapter Apple includes with the phone! Can you say that about anything non-Apple? It was time to change the connector and it's nice, and can be used across it's whole ecosystem which is dope. I have a Galaxy Nexus and a Galaxy Note 10.1, I can't purchase a dock for either because Samsung refused to bring them to Canada. I'd have to pay $180 for the Note 10.1 dock from South Korea (including shipping / tariffs / customs) and $90 for the gnex landscape dock. HILARIOUS.
Lawsuit: they won, period. There was written proof that Samsung copied the iPhone. Like everyone else copied the retina display. Like everyone else copied the whole iPad-esque tablet. You think you would have a Nexus 10 without the original iPad? You think you'd have a good smartphone? All-in One PCs? Ultrabooks? These product types always seem to become popular soon after Apple has come out with it. Note that I did not say they were the first to make that type of product, only that other companies seem to get the balls to make sexy stuff right after Apple popularizes it.
