[Q] How to correct cylinder boundaries in microSD card - General Questions and Answers

Hi everyone,
I just bought a 32GB sdhc card. At first it mounted just fine on my windows 7x64 machine. I opened up minitool partition wizard home edition to format the card with about 2GB for sd-ext and the rest for fat32. It said it was successful but now the card will not mount in windows 7 or in my optimus V phone (which supports 32gb sdhc).
So then I tried to format the card with CWM instead directly on the phone. Here is the log from that experience:
Partitioning SD Card... please wait...
checking script requirements...done
unmounting all partitions...done
partition 1 may not be aligned to cylinder boundaries.
to continue, this must be corrected.
this action will remove all data from your sdcard.
correcting cylinder boundaries...sh: 0: unknown operand
done
err: must have a fat32 partition greater than 0MB
Done!

Basically I think minitool screwed up my card (or i did using the wrong settings) or the card was already bricked; but not so much that my card cannot try to read it. However, I can't mount the card in my phone in CWM or if the phone had the rom loaded. Further, I can't see it when invoking fdisk -l through ADB.
Does anyone know if there is a way to somehow fix this cylinder issue or do you think this card is bricked and is not even heavy enough to be a paper weight?
thanks.

it looks like CWM uses sdparted to do these operations.
I tried running that through adb manually but it failed with the same error:
err: must have a fat32 partition greater than 0MB

[Q] Creating ext2 partition on micro sd card

Hi,
I have a 16GB Micro SD card that I want to create a 1GB exts partition on.
I have the free versions of Paragon and Acronis, but it would seem I need the full version to create a partition on an SD card?
I therefore got minitools partition manager and I was able to create a partition, but it is unallocated and it's status is NONE.
The FAT32 partition is Primary and the unallocated one is logical.
If I click on this partition almost everything is grayed out so I cannot format to ext2.
Please help.
I am running this on a cheap card reader from ebay on Windows XP.

Ext2 obviously
If it helps the card has a 4 on it, so does that mean it's class 4?
I think I'm a bit dumb !!!
I'd resized the partition only, so it was simply unallocated.
Are there any free partition software downloads that allow me to create a partition please?
It is MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition from partitionwizard.com

Cheers, I managed that and now I have another problem.

I did, I think I used ROM Manager in the end.
It didn't work to begin with, I played with the Partition software above, then I went back to ROM Manager and it worked.
help
I got class 4 4gb memory card and has used minitool partition wizard to create 3.5gb fat32 partition and 500mb ext2 partition. but when i connected to my SE x10mini and it says 'damaged memory card'. but then i format the memory card via my phone and the ext2 partition has been erase. may i know any suggestion to create 2 partition and make the phone able to recognise the memory card??
one more question, may i know what is the next step to make ext2 partition to be apart of system's space??
I`ve managed to make two partitions using Gparted (win).

[Q] Another lost SD card?

Bought a GT6800 and a 32 gb microSD UHS card from A-Data. Two days after something happened to the card while the tab was indexing dictionaries on it. Now card is recognized by a Windows PC, but won't open with the message that is has to be formatted, and won't format with the message "Windows was unable to format..".
I did read this thread and many other similar, and here is what I tried so far:
- Formatting via Windows Explorer
- Formatting via Windows Disk Management
- Formatting with MiniTool Partition Wizard
- Surface check with MiniTool Partition Wizard (no error)
- Wiping partition with MiniTool Partition Wizard
- Low level formatting with HSS LLF Low Level Format Tool
- dd if=/dev/zero bs=1M count=1000 of=/dev/sdb
- partitioning with fdisk in linux
Is there anything left for me to try?
One more thing: not sure what capacity the card had before the incident, but now fdisk reports it to be 32.4gb. A bit too much for a 32gb card, don't you think?

[Q] Ext2 partion mounted then after linking apps it can not be mounted!

I have Xperia Active with JellyVanilla 2 rev0 [Unlocked BL] installed
Yesterday I partitioned a second partition on my sd card so as I can link apps to sd, created 1027 MB ex2 primary partitoin!
Then, It was mounted, I linked the apps and everything was just GREAT!!!
Then, I slept for about 12 hours and when i'm awake i found the apps I linked yesterday are not shown.
Link2sd couldn't mount the partion, although it could see it!!
It gives me this message:
"Mount script cannot be created.
mount: mounting /dev/block/vold/179:2 on /data/sdext2 failed: Invalid Argument
ext2 may not be supported on your device. Try FAT32 on the second partition"

Minitool partition wizard can not see the partition "although I used it yesterday to create it!!"
And now, the windows doesn't read the sd card at all!!
Please, any ideas???
Thanks
If Windows can not read the SD card, then the card is probably hosed. Reboot your computer, try a different card reader / USB port. If you still can't read it, you'll have to reformat the card. Use this program to reformat the SD card (obviously, all data will be lost).

The message you have means that your device doesn't support 2nd partition in ext2 so you have to create a 2nd partition in FAT32, or eventually in ext3 or ext4. But what do you mean by "the windows doesn't read the sd card at all"?

Thanks for your reply
But, when I used the usb connection between the device and my laptop, it read the sd card BUT not the ext2 partition
I think the problem not making windows reading the sd card is about the adapter

Ah, that's different! Windows does not have built-in support for ext-formatted partitions! You will not be able to see anything on the ext partition from your computer, either directly or through the phone (when SD card is mounted). You will only be able to see what's on the card from within your phone, or by putting the SD card in a linux or mac computer.

so?
Last step I did is that I formatted the sd card by the software you gave me a link to.
BUT, it only formated 13.7 GB!!!! My SD is 16GB, so the real capacity is 14.8!
The difference is the 1GB ext2 partition I created yesterday!
How could I recover it?
Thanks so much by the way for your help
Ok, you need to delete the ext2 partition. Best just delete all partitions, and create a new, primary partition formatted as FAT32.

That's not so hard, it's just big. Wubi let's you kind of dual-boot Windows and Ubuntu, but you can uninstall it any time through Control Panel.
In any case, the ext partition is still there, and your phone should still be able to see it, if it's mounted properly.

how could i start over?

how can i find the ext partition and use it?
What do you mean you formatted your phone? You reflashed the ROM?
When you partition the SD card, those partitions will stay there until you remove/change them. In order to access an ext partition on your SD card, it just has to be mounted. All of those *2sd scripts will do that. Link2SD has a menu option which says recreate mount scripts.

Is it too complicated?
That means that your phone cannot read the 2nd partition on the SD card (but you already knew that). Either the partition needs to be reformatted, the partition needs to be removed & recreated, the whole SD card is going bad, or you're using a ROM which does not support ext-formatted partitions (i.e., stock ROMs).

the rom supports it, it's not a stock rom, coz as i said before i'm using JellyVanilla JB 4.1.1
no stock JB for xperia phones yet!
also, it already supported the partition and used it yesterday!
So I think i'll try to open the sd using WUBI when it finishes downloading and installing then i'll tell you the results
Thanks anyways
You'll have some fun learning how to use stuff in linux. When you get it up and running, you'll want to use gparted to examine the SD card.

SD card bad disc?

Hello, I when I tried to partition my sd card using MiniTool Partition Wisard to create two partition (20GB with filesystem ext2 and 10 GB with FAT32) it shows me that the partition process was successful. However, I could not see the SD card on my computer (it should show the partition with filesystem FAT32). Okay, therefore, I decided to remove the card from the computer. And when I inserted it back to the PC, it still can't show the card. Therefore, I decided to open the MiniTool Partition Wisard to see what happened. And it says that my SD card has Bad Disk filesystem. Also, when I insert the card into the phone, its says that my SD card is blank. What when wrong? Isn't the partition successful? What can I do?

[Q] Partition missing!

I use a HTC Explorer running cyanogenmod 10.
Previously i was running stock ROM and using Link2SD onto my SD card. I then factory reset the phone and flashed it with http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1847002. The partition i had made for Link2SD has now completely vanished. It was about 500Mb, now the SD card total storage shows a reduction in total memory of he same 500Mb.
Further, im not able to partition the remaining memory in the card to use Link2SD with either! HELP! What can i do?
