Hey guys,
Just wondering if any of the devs would like to implement this open source project. If anyone that doesn't know what this is, Cornerstone enables you to run apps simultaneously onscreen. This would enhance the productivity and notebook feel of our devices. I'm no dev so I am unaware if this will be easy to implement, but I hope someone will like to take on this task.

This is actually *very* old news. The ROMS that did incorporate this functionality had huge stability issues and really don't even update it anymore (at least on the ROM's I've seen). It's really DOA, in my opinion....
However, there *are* quite a few "floating" (windowed) apps available for Android that really work well. Here is a sampling of them (all available on Play Store):
- OverSkreen (Web Browser) - absolutely awesome - even supports Flash.
- AirCalc - calculator
- Stick-It - Video player
- AirTerm- Terminal emulator
- HoverNote - Simple note-taking
There are others as well - much better than Cornerstone, in my opinion.

Ok do you think we will ever see something like the split screen functions on the new samsung tabs come to our devices? And i wasn't saying its new or anything, just wondering if it's possible to implement and if it could run smoothly. Is it because it's just in beta or does the whole project not work out right.

The idea is nice, but it's difficult to implement. I ran a cornerstone enabled rom on my Xoom (EOS ICS nightlies) but no matter what I did, I had to keep going back to the non-cornerstone implementation. Probably because I prefer to use a third party launcher...the small windows kept freezing and the tab would eventually become unusable.
But I +1,000,000 on the floating apps...they add true multitasking capacity to android. Check them out.

+1 on that. I ran the EOS cornerstone builds on the TF201 for and there were always problems. The devs would always say that the problems were not of their making (i.e. there are issues with Cornerstone). I have to say that they were right since their regular builds were flawless. Cornerstone is a great idea but it is just too buggy.
Regardless, I think we are getting a little ahead of ourselves. Maybe when we actually have some non-stock roms then someone will consider making a Cornerstone build.
BTW, this should have been posted in General or Q&A
Would love to see something like Quasar on IOS (Jailbroken) for Android
My friend has it on his new iPad and it's pretty damn slick and flexible (any app can be resized and so far, they all seem to behave)

Hey everyone! I am interested in making a list of Android Tablet-Compatible Apps. Could you do me a favor and list the ones that you use that are compatible with your tablets? I'd really appreciate it!

What do you mean "Tablet-Compatible"? If you just mean apps that run ok on the Tab in fullscreen mode, then that's going to be a BIG list as the majority of things work fine.

I think he means apps optomized for the tablet form factor and size; apps like pulse. This is as opposed to apps that simply scale well like the Kindle app which works fine and scales fine but the whole applications i still the same exact app that is the one being used on 3-4 inch phones. compare the regular kindle app to the iPad version of the kindle app and you'll see the difference between something that works well on a tablet and something designed to be used on a tablet
That's exactly what I mean, is optimized to run on the Tablets as compared to optimized for a 3-4 inch phone.

Yes and you see it also when you look at the apps Samsung created like for example the email app and the calendar app. If you change to landscape mode you get a split window view which is really nice on a tablet.
I'm an app developer myself and right now I'm hesitating if I should write apps for tablets. I think there can be a lot done in this respect. The dilemma is that Google announced specific development support for tablet apps in honeycomb. This creates the question if one should develop for the tablet right now and do a lot! of extra work or postpone it until Google releases a programming framework that makes it a lot easier to create ui's on tablets. Though question.

See my response above. It is really a question if we are going to see tablet specific apps on short term
It is, probably tough, to decide to have to potentially do things twice, but I'd expect that if you think you can pull it off to ship even a month before others get their apps coded with new APIs and such, there'd be a tremendous advantage to building up first mover and the app to be measured against.

I am personally thinking that with the boom of android tablets that is about to happen and the release of honeycomb that is bound to follow, that people who get in on the train early can reap some serious benefits...
But, to each his own I guess. I will keep looking!
Hi Guys ... and Gals,
Am thinking of getting a TF for my wife ... 16GB without the dock.
The experience I have with Android is ... well, pleasant! I use the Nexus S.
Well, since I'm using the Nexus S, I would be interested to know if the TF comes with the original Honey Comb that can be updated directly from Google or if I would have to wait for updates from ASUS.
Yes I know all things are possible with a root, but:
a) I don't want to be messing with her tablet everytime.
b) I think the ASUS keyboard with the numbers on the top line is nice. Is it available as a separate download? Is it available for the mobile too?
I'm currently on holiday and would like to buy it so ... before I move back to is there any particular problems I should look out for?
Thanks for any help
Updates happen through Asus. Though they seem to be on time with them.
I think all tablet updates come from the manufacturer

Thanks both
So, the only way to get newer versions IF Asus start behaving like HTC or Samsung is to root it and put in a custom rom! Fine ... no probs. Atleast while the going is good, we don't have to worry.
Any known problems I have to look out for before a purchase?
Thanks again.

It's not the known problems you should be concerned about, but the unknown ones.
Get a newer model. Serial code should start with B60xxxxxxxxxxx. B40 is original. B50 middle.
I have a B50 and its nice. Other then that be on the look out for screen bleed. iPad2s have bleed just like everyone else. Some are extreme. Most are barely noticeable. Just keep an eye out.

Asus made some subtle changes ( icons on the status bar) but asus was the first company to push out the 3.1 update ( after the xoom )
Thanks ... guess that will help
It's normal that the update come from the manufacturer.
Asus must have to include the specific drivers for it's tablet (not all the hardware is the same, even if the main platform is based on Tegra2)
It also made few modifications for apps integration and visuals.

The Xoom was only first in the US, everywhere else the Transformer got 3.1 before the Xoom. Actually the Xoom only has 3.1 in US, Australia,Japan and China.
it just has a few mods (buttons + some widgets and wallpapers)
There are several similar threads in other device forums so I thought why not start one here. If the mods think this is in the wrong section or a bad idea please delete.
We can also use this thread for the development of XBMC for Transformer if anyone is up to making a Transformer specific build.
Okay so as of the time of this posting there is no "Transformer XBMC" specific version so I'm using one of the generic builds. "xbmcapp-armeabi-v7a-debug-20120714.apk" is the name of the one I found. Link
Works:
Nothing - It crashes back to home screen after launching.
Bugs:
That's it for now. I'll keep monitoring this thread and post updates to the OP if possible.
I should note that this same apk works for my Galaxy S3 and my wifes EVO 4g with little to NO problems.
Same problem here, works on galaxy note and tab 10.1, transformer simply dies on launch...

It's not a bad idea but should be in apps and not development. Seeing there is no development just bug reports.

@bkmo - Good point. Can a mod please move this to the correct section? Thanks.
As far as development goes I was hoping that maybe we could use this thread to attempt to compile xbmc from source for Transformer. I've compiled on other platforms before but I have no experience with Android.
Anyway maybe an actual developer would be better suited to post a thread on xbmc development.
Check General section i had already started a thread for XBMC on TF101 maybe we can continue there

according the the xbmc wiki http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=XBMC_for_Android_specific_FAQ#Installing.2Fgetting_XBMC_for_Android tegra2 devices will not be supported.
NOOOOOOO!
It works perfectly on my Rezound and my friend said it works on his TF201 but looks horrible.
It doesn't work because the Tegra 2 doesn't support Neon instruction set. The chances of it ever working on a Tegra 2 are slim to none.
That news is a bummer...

Its quite sad but I personally i dont think id have much use for it on my tf. Im running XBMC on my original xbox and I dont think you could get a better inexpensive media centre
You definitely can and it's a Raspberry Pi with Android or Linux The original Xbox doesn't seem to support anything higher than 480 because the processor can't handle the load, I've tried.

Yeah and you can't even find them anywhere. I've been on the official list for months. I have 3 original xbox's at home running XBMC but for all my HD media I have several apple TV 2's running XBMC. It rocks!
I can think of several applications for running XBMC on my transformer. For one, my kids can watch all my HD media from my local server rather than deal with Netflix's crappy lack of selection.
Check out this kickstarter project: Equiso smart TV. I'm thinking of pledging for one and hopefully XMBC will run on it.
Works great on HTC one X. I was able to download video add-ons, get weather etc. Only issue I had was tiny keyboard, had to use a touch pen. I have big hands lol.

Hi All,
I have the Asus Transformer Pad Infinity and installed the full working XBMC App.
There are some issues with the app. The keyboard on the dock is not fully working. Some keys are doing other things than they must do.
Is there someone who are smart enough to look into this and optimize the XBMC app fully for the TF700 Tablet?
If someone want pick this up i can share the .APK file from my dropbox
Cheers,
Peter

Interesting to hear. I use Plex and works well on it. Although, they have a good head start on the mobile side on things compared to XBMC.
More on topic, maybe you should report your findings in the XBMC forums on the nightlies

Plex for Android also the full working one.. on Tablet? I want try that also but can't find it on the net... grrr
Yes i will report it on the XMBC forum... this kind of media center apps makes your tablet a real machine
Plex for Android works on the infinity. It's the same design as the phone, since it's the app. I don't recall if it had that zoom function as other phone apps, but it looked good and worked well. But it was updated for Android 4, so it's not really a design for phone versus tablet.
So I see NVFLASH is coming soon, this excites the hell out of me.
I see development has been done on TF101/201 with success.
my wonder at this point, if I brick the bootloader, will that lock me out of recovery/fastboot?
this question is the only thing that has stopped me from flashing flashing uboot + a new filesystem based on the reference example from nvidia.
I want real linux on this thing. it's such a rad piece of hardware, and with some real linux I can work around the i/o issues that seem to plague this thing (I can't run torrents, listen to 320k mp3s and browse the web at the same time)
on a similar but unrelated note, could I possibly see overall speed improvements by using external SDHC/SDXC? I just haven't gotten a solid answer if the hardware i/o issues are because of the flash memory controller or the actual internal flash memory itself.
I'll keep screwing with this antequated 2.6~ kernel for now. I guess JB is coming, but it's still android.
what I REALLY want is something akin to the webtop hack on the atrix, dock your android, boot into linux. but since I already have a tweaked out android phone that does everything I need a device of that size/class to do. I want this thing to be a netbook replacement + touchscreen
I've been pouring through the kernel sources, as well as the kernel I downloaded from nVidia for tegra linux, and this all looks very doable.
I guess I'm just being a wuss 'cause this tablet was f'n expensive! and the chroot/loopback/vnc linux solution is not a solution. It's a joke. I have a 1920x1200 screen that I want to put to good use. if I can't make that happen, I'm contemplating gutting the tablet just to rob its screen/digitizer for my netbook, and throw the rest in the garbage.
to say its performance is disappointing is an understatement. it's about as responsive to input as a boeing 707 (that's why I keep calling it a TF707 )
I agree with your sentiment and am going to attempt to compile a workable kernel for this cause. If more are willing to help it might be best to upload source to sourceforge.
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF700T using xda app-developers app
i will agree here and am willing to help and now the NVFlash is is released, sadly i updated and currently cant use it i am looking for a fix soon when i get an extra minute. but once i am NVFlashed i am willing to help out with anything. this is something i have been waiting for since i bought the thing. a good dual boot for this baby. i unlike you do want to keep the android on there also but i do want some good linux on this baby. if you can keep us/me up to date with your plans it would be great.
--Jezzirolk
I'll be back stateside in the next week or so, I'll post some updates once I get something to boot... If I get something to boot. I'm still reading lots of documentation from nvidia and sources.
Question : what kind of linux desktop would you install on your tablet ? What desktop is ready for use with our fingers instead of a mouse/keyboard and is ready to compile on that ARM architecture ?
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF700T using xda app-developers app
I'm going to keep it docked most of the time anyway, so I'll probably use XFCE. I need external USB hardware support for various network devices, a real browser and a real office suite that works with openoffice documents. Having a real development environment is a plus.
I know it won't be fast, but I'm hoping to retain decent battery life with all this and have it be lightweight.
the HDMI output is also nice, and using the tegra linux drivers I'll have WAY more control over the output (different resolutions and such)
all the source is out there, someone just needs to put it all together and compile it, and I'm getting impatient. I'll have two weeks off and the only other thing I have to do is swap a new motor into a '93 towncar (2 days tops) so I'll have some time to dedicate to it, I'll get as far as I can and then put what I got up on github or something.
Ok so it will be a classic "keyboard'n mouse" use, not a "fingers" use

If I wanted that I'd just keep android
I already have an android device that does everything I want/need on a touchscreen.
not to say I won't work on adding some features. I've used POS terminals as personal computers and I have a fair amount of elo touchscreen LCDs I used to use at home and in the dash of my car. (Motorola MW520/MW800s are pretty badass little digital media players if you set them up right.
but you can make any interface touch friendly by doubling the DPI, you essentially only get 25% of the "screen real estate" but it works, and it's a quick and dirty solution, it's not hard to change on the fly when I have an xserver I can dump and reload at will.
I'm hoping I'll be able to utilize the JB bootloader since it already supports a 3.x kernel. should save me some work.

I've been a long tester of linux desktop (window managers, ...) and i'd be interested in a standard linux desktop adapted to touchscreen use. At the moment i don't know any of them (gnome, kde, ...) that are touchscreen ready (apart of android) but i'm still looking for that experience. I have at home a old pc fof my linux experiments and i would buy a touchscreen lcd for that linux desktop if there was some nice solution. But i don't see any for the moment.

I am also waiting for JB to drop be for I get to hardcore into kernels 3.1 or 3.5, but now that I have nvflash working I am working on a method to boot a working kernel of of 2.6 and just get a working concept going.
as much as I don't like ubuntu, it is the one that most are comfortable and has the most dev activity. multi-touch 5 finger is obtainable albeit probably need to hack 3.1 to do it or just go with my desire to get to 3.5.
I am planning instead of repartitioning to just use a couple loop img files 1. for root 2. swap and 3. for home (this way a user can make what size he wants) . it will make everything so much easier.

times many!
I do not care if it is a dual-boot situation or boot from a stick or card, but I'm waiting to buy one until I see a reasonable way to run a bodhi or kde or ubuntu 10 on an infinity...
AND, I do not have the skills to hack it up...
If anyone creates a way to do this with a few clicks (or REALLY SIMPLE command lines, I mean really really really simple, not just simple from a programers view = )
I really want to know, as the infinity hardware is everything I need...
thanks for working on it!
