Just wondering if Verizon would be breaking the law by pushing an update (a malicious code ) to lock the bootloader. Theoretically, wouldn't that be hacking your phone?

#1 Rule of being rooted: Do NOT under ANY circumstance accept an OTA update.
Running a custom ROM usually prevents acceptance of OTA updates (I'm using Synergy)
Someone reported that even if you are running stock, putting on a custom recovery (anything other than stock) may also prevent auto OTA updates
Obviously if Verizon gives you the option, refuse

And yet they 100% fail to address the question that was asked.
It has crossed my mind that such a thing could happen, what if Verizon sends out an update that bricks the phones with unsecured bootloaders? I know most of us here know not to accept OTA but I bet the forums would be flooded with posts from thousands of people who are both pissed and heartbroken seeking help. I know its unlikely because this would cost verizon money... however... I bet they are angry that we got the leaked bootloader and might do it just to show who the REAL boss is. That is until we break them again and the nerds prevail.
We live in interesting times. I THINK that's a good thing,
Can an OTA be forced on the phone without user intervention? I believe Google once removed some malware type stuff from phones without needing users to 'click yes'.

It seems AT&T is pushing out an OTA version 2.20 that is rumored to close all the loopholes we've used to unlock and root the One X.
If you have NOT rooted and unlocked your bootloader and you want to do so don't accept the update.
Wait until someone has gotten a hold of this version and picked it apart before installing it.
Keep Calm and Carry On.

Even if you are rooted and unlocked BL, don't accept the OTA, unless you are brave and feel like being the guinea pig (I guess somebody has to be). The install may not work, or it may wipe out root, and the existing root methods may have been plugged up. OTA Rootkeeper might work. It did for the last OTA, but there is no guarantee that it will work this time. Somebody will probably post this as a recovery flashable zip in pre-rooted form. So be patient, unless you feel like experimenting, and living with the consequences.
Thanks for the public service announcement, as I'm sure people will start asking whether its safe to install the OTA.
I figured people who rooted would know this but thank you for adding it.

Or how many people unroot just so they can get an OTA that will provide very little added performance if any. People are sooooo quick to accept OTAs when they have no clue what they are for. I can understand wanting to accept an OTA for a major OS update like ICS to JB (ok that was a lie, I still have no clue why people would rather accept an OTA than just flash a rooted ROM) but to give up root for a simple MR is just asinine.

If I'm not mistaken, the exploit uses the AT&T update server to trick the phone into download mode, so I don't think this could work.
Did anybody see this (mandatory system update) what the are you kidding me see attached highlighted.
Update notifications always appeared on this site Advanced Devices- Software Updates

This was done very convert the attached should have been found on

Shame on you verizon.
That's just my opinion I could be wrong.
Its still there on the website somewhere, just not listed in that directory yet. You have to manually go to the GS3 support page.

And for the average user who doesn't browse these forums at all when they see an update its just normal for them and is not a big deal at all. They probably don't even check that site for update information either. If your so worried about an update just flash a custom recovery and you'll never have to worry about it again.

Actually no, HTC will know if you unlock by unlocking your bootloader on their site
I think Verizon knows what firmware your running when you update but I don't think it should even be a problem.

HTC don't know that you are unlocked. Only that you requested the unlock token. Verizon does check the software but whether they know you are rooted I don't know. There is root detect in the software itself that is why Trev disabled it. What happens I don't know. Have never done an OTA on any device since I got my first Tbolt and rooted it right away. No need to take OTA. We usually get the RUU before it is ever released and the devs deem it safe or make it safe within 24 hours.

still downloading. it took forever to "check for update". Some apps have updates (like Facebook) that give option to add the app to an SD card. This is probably what it is. Im a noob to android btw.. just letting people know an update is out.
I do not think this is wise, but I think the update is a patch that blocks the loki unlock the devs achieved. need to be careful with these updates as the devs have warned us about. I could be wrong here.

You are correct - it's usually a good idea to hold off on taking any OTA updates before knowing what they do. To keep from getting OTA updates, use something like Titanium backup to freeze or otherwise disable three specific apps:
Aou said:
Correct. To block future OTA updates, "Freeze" the following three applications:
AT&T Software update Vxx_x_xxxx_x_x
FWUpgrade x.x.x
LocalFOTA vx_xxxx_x_x
Freezing (with Titanium Backup) will keep them from running, and effectively hide them from the rest of your system. Otherwise, you may find a way to backup and uninstall them completely, but this is more risky if you're ever planning to take an OTA update in the future.

Mainly a update to KNOX.
Have to see if theres a modem update. If there is thats all thats important for me. And if they patched Loki.
Talked to ATT, app2sd, audio clipping issue with headphones fix, removed a wallpaper and added 2 back, and some msging fix. I think there was a few other things as well, he said a security patch as well, but no real information on what.

I'll take the risk and attempt to download the patch without letting it install, and post its contents here. Wish me luck.
Well, plenty of warning has been given about waiting to apply this update until it is cleared as safe, so if anyone decides to ignore the warnings, too bad. If it's safe, it'll be known soon enough. I'm just wondering how many other threads will be made about it...anyone taking bets?

If you're on MDL and want MF3, I recommend rooting and installing a custom recovery while you can, and then flashing the neutered MF3 update. Root is in the General section, many MF3 ROM's can be found in Development sections. Make sure to read the whole OP in whichever you go to before doing anything.

Yes, you may be able to just flash the MF3 modem after a factory reset. That would hopefully resolve your current issues and open up the LTE bands.

If you want the MF3 rom and/or kernel, check out this thread. If you want just the modem (baseband), check out the latest addition, File #11 in that same thread.
Otherwise, I think this thread has been hijacked enough, and the original purpose has been served, in my opinion. The MF3 source is practically useless to anyone except Devs that want to build their own kernels.

Could the kernel source also be useful to those looking to find an exploit in MF3 (to unlock the bootloader or something to that effect), or is the kernel too high-level for that sort of thing?

Pretty sure it's too high level. It might be useful for finding a root exploit, but that's been done already for MF3. It wouldn't be useful for finding a way to unlock the bootloaders, but the only slim help it could find in this area is perhaps providing clues to understanding "aboot" more, and how it checks for signatures on, and loads the kernel. But even still, that's a longshot. TBH, anyone who might be looking for exploits here should already be aware of the source code's existence, plus this sort of exploit would brobably be little different between MF3 and MDL.
EDIT:
Also, welcome to XDA!
