Holy smokes, that is super hot for a phone. It also sounds like you may have killed the Gpu part of your Tegra2 processor. But I'm no expert at Nvidia processors so there maybe a way to revive it.

I was thinking i cooked something glad i have insurance. Smelled like a pine tree when it got that hot

That's weird the same exact thing happened to me too yesterday. I was using GPS and had my phone plugged into charger while driving in a 95' weather. Then a notification popped saying mu phone was hot or something. So I unplugged it. It was as hot as what you first posted. Should I return this?

Yea Usually most phones when you are charging it especially this one and using heavy apps it overheats quick, You guys should try underclocking. There are several apps for that ,also just asking wasn't the air conditioning working because it shouldn't have gotten that hot.
I go around in 105-110 weather mine really don't get that hot!
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda app-developers app

I can not put the AC on when the weather is blistering hot or else my car will overheat like my phone.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda app-developers app

I posted this somewhere else, but I do have some heating issues myself, even after undervolting and underclocking. I did find a partial fix. I noticed there is enough room between the back casing and the battery so I took tin foil, cut it to size and lapped a few together to create a heat sink I could fit in the back. Since then I've been able to run 1.55Ghz on Faux's v52 voltage. I've tried Sygic and tons of other heavy duty games and it only crashes on rare occasions due to heat now.

My phone smells like it's burnt as well. Even when I take the battery out, the phone smells like burnt where the gold connectors are. As well as the battery itself smelling. I can smell it through the USB connector on the bottom with the battery cover on.
I purchased a new battery and it still does the same thing... I don't know if it's the phone or the batteries.
The phone works fine and I get great battery life. It's not even hot. So idk if I should be concerned or not.
RELAX man ! your electrical outlet gives the not stable amplitude of voltage....thats why charger is getting hot sometimes., and smells.
Don't worry it's ok

It's not the charger though, it's the actual phone/battery.
After having the phone unplugged for hours, the area around the gold contacts of the phone/battery connectors smells like scorched metal/plastic.

Yeah I'm using Faux's LGE Stock Froyo kernel v0.0.4 with ext4 undervolted.
Stock LG Froyo rom
The smell never goes away as long as the phone is on. It has been doing it since I got the phone about 3 weeks ago before I installed the custom kernel.
Like I said, everything works fine, and the phone and battery aren't even hot. I even bought a new battery and it still does it.

(FIXED) G2x gets flipping hot sometimes......

Woah is me. My g2x gets hot. So does my mt4g my g2 and anyone else's phone I use. I started to wonder why.....its the way I'm holding it. Yes, simply that. Oh lets not forget after a nice full wipe and everything is installing over again that taxes the processor causing it to get hotter than normal. Oh it gets hot sitting in my pocket doing nothing when it's really hot outside.
Anyone here ever pay attention to when it gets hot and actually wonder why it does?
ITS ALL WONKY!!!
Morfic has a good post somewhere about this. If I recall he made mention that the Tegra 2 can bake a cake under certain conditions (I believe primarily when OC). What kernel are you using?
edit: nvm...
What I'm saying is its general body heat. Our bodies are average of 98.6 degrees. So holding it.in your hand alone will warm up the device.
Think of holding a glass of milk firmly in your hand for a while and see how long it stays cold compared to letting it sit on the table.
In some cases I think it is the phone but I would say 90% or more its the user not the device being a defect.

This post is completely false. Body heat? Come on.....If this logic were true then why have I picked the phone up off my cocktail table hours after not being used only to feel the phone much hotter than the surface it's sitting on in a air conditioned house? These processors run MUCH hotter than a body temp could ever reach and they were designed to withstand these temperatures. This is what CPU's do when you tax them, they get hot. If you still want to believe this bogus logic then I propose you open a HD game, set it on your cocktail table and only touch the phone with on of your fingers. Play it for about 15 minutes, pick your phone up and tell me if it's hot.
Last time I checked, my laptops CPU/GPU isn't touching anything but still gets hot.

Ok hold your phone by finger tips in the corners and tax the processor and then let it cool down and holdbit firmly from behind and do the same thing and see how much faster it gets hot.
This phone sitting on a table does not get hot at all. In my pocket when its 100 degrees outside does get hot......while doing nothing more than standby.
Its not BS. Yea these processors get hot on their own but I'm making a point that if the back of the phone has body heat covering it, it will get hot or at the least warmer than normal just because of that.
ITS ALL WONKY!!!
I live in an area where it is as hot (soon to be much hotter) as body temperature and my phone does not get noticeably hot unless I am really taxing it. But as far as exceeding design limits of CPUs I would have to be significantly overclocking it and taxing it at the same time.

This is your opinion unless you have the data to prove it. I have had phones get hot without touching them so I'm not believing this and quite frankly not a lot of people are. I asked you a question earlier. Why does my laptop and desktop CPU'S get hot when I never come in contact with them?
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App
In my opinion the thing that makes the phone warm up mostly is the cell radio. Download a 30mb file ( not on wifi) , turn off the screen, and watch how warm it gets. Also watch the large battery hit.
And every smart phone I know will get hot on a demanding game..
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
My phone only gets hot near the camera when I bootloop.
It barely gets warm when playing a 3D game like Galaxy on Fire 2 or RPTide (or whatever).
I download CM roms (98mb) over cellular EVERY day and the phone feels cool to the touch.

you are comparing a computer to a phone.
i understand your point, anything being run hard will get hot.
im just saying tho, my battery temp has reached 100 degrees just being outside and not used. its reached 100 when i hold it in my hand covering the back a lot even doing simple tasks. when i hold it without the back totally covered from my hand, it does not get as hot when taxing it more. when my speck case is on it does not get as hot if im holding it fully in the back.

Overheating?

Does any one else's Charge seem to get abnormally hot while charging? Like hot to the point where it's uncomfortable to put in my pocket after charging. Wondering if I should try and get the phone replaced before it fries itself or if it's just normal. Thanks!

Mine does it a lot, and its actually getting to the point where it wont charge my battery completely. Charged all last night, battery says 100%, but when I take it off the charger, its on 49%. And it died on 12%. Im taking it to VZW tomorrow to see if they can switch out the battery.

Verizon should replace the overheating phones. Mine overheated so badly that an error message popped up and said the phone could not charge because it was too hot.....something like that. I brought it to Verizon and they swapped it out no problem.
Sent from my SCH-I510 using Tapatalk
I wonder how many times they can swap out. Because mine overheats when it charges, and sometimes when itaint charging at all.
Sent from my SCH-I510 using XDA Premium App
definitely not normal. Mine charges off of a 2amp charger in under an hour from 10 to 100 percent without getting very hot. Make sure you change out the charger too, the phone might not be the only problem. If there is a partial short it could be causing it.
If it's doing it with the factory charger, yes, it's a problem. If you have an aftermarket charger (or battery), it's most likely that. These phones are a bit touchier than they ought to be about where they accept their power from.
Mine seems to get pretty hot as well. Lets hope that we can pull a fascinate and use the warranty to get the sgs2.
indeed
my charge is overheating as well. there are 2 instances when it overheats. while Charging and downloading a huge file from internet or the app that uses internet/data.
I have tried diff battery did not help. I assume everyones phone is like that. Charge has a overheating problems.
IF you are not agree with me try to torrent on the phone for 20min. Just for testing sake and prove me wrong.(I dont torrent but it is a perfect example)

I had the same thing on my original Charge when it shipped to me. Along with the heat issue, my phone was dying way faster than it should considering my setup.
I went to a VZW corp store and they switched me out with a new battery as part of the manufacturer's warranty program.
The new battery didn't overheat anymore and my battery lasted twice as long.
Either way, you have nothing to lose.
big red is shipping me a replacement today...hopefully its a good one!
As always, if you are having heat problems I recommend underclocking/volting to 800mhz. Last time I did that it solved ALL my heat problems completely! It would only get ever so slightly warm when watching Netflix(the most data and system intensive app I know of). Never hot though.

Really hot when using cm7

I hate to point out the obvious, but isn't the common denominator the battery? Maybe our batteries are faulty. I'm running a stock Sensation and my battery gets hot too when charging or when the screen is on for a little while.

While charging it is normal. Because now everything is getting slimmer and slimmer all the parts are getting closer and this is the result. Every battery gets warm when you charge it, some more some less. It is not a defect.

HOX overheating issue

Such as "Wheres my water" I think that game gets my phone really hot because of the physics involved with the water etc
HTc one x overheating
Ive had same overheating issue with Galaxy s2 on ICS 4.03 and with the same games played on HTC ONE X, i've got same overheating near camera n top screen.
I dont think this issue is phone specific
I guess some games and apps are are not optimized for ICS 4.03, coz same games didn't overheat my galaxy s2 on GB 2.3.6.
Its very annoying but hope there is a fix soon.
Had some slight overheating as well. What really got me was that the top was pretty hot when i touched it, but when i touched the bottom it was nice and cool lol
