Amazon Apps and Battery! - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

ok.. so I have been useing Amazon appstore for a while and have been killed too many times becuase it sits there and kills the battery, no matter what. If I kill the app, it starts back up for whatever reason, and when it does, it starts eating battery
if I uninstall it, some of the apps that I bought stop working! it's crazy! I emailed them, and they blamed it on my phone and provider. btw, I have had this issue on all 3 android phones , AND soo many different ROM's that I can count.
I did a search and people have had this issue also, but i never found a resolution, other then uninstalling them and buying them from the Google appstore.

Long shot...do you think if you freeze the app store using Quarantine or Titanium Backup it will work? I doubt it honestly, but maybe worth a shot...
At the very least maybe create a shortcut to freeze/unfreeze it so that you can toggle when you launch an app that requires authorization from Amazon

[Q] Apps Restarting

I recently upgraded my ATT Captivate to 2.2. I now have a problem with apps starting up on there own even though I've going into apps management and have killed them. I even have app killer and its not automatically killing the apps. These aren't the att apps, these are apps that I've installed.
How can I prevent apps from starting back up. Its killing my battery life.
Thanks

Get os monitor and check how much mem they use. If u see one that is always over 20%, uninstall it.
Also u can stop ur running services.

What BW said. Don't worry about them in there unless you find one using up too much battery/resources. They won't drain your battery unless it's a bad app.

You could try unistalling your task killer and getting Advanced Task Killer (it's the one I personnaly use). Now killing a app won't stop it from restarting, you usually fix that in your running services. Also make sure that these apps arent widgets - in that case they will always restart

Actually, its Advanced Task Killer that I have installed. Yes, I totally understand apps vs. services. I'm stopping the services for the apps that have restarted, yet they continue to restart after the service has been killed. These apps are definitely not widgets.

Umm, may I ask what are these apps?
The only app that takes couple tries for me to stop if the facebook one. Also, some app are made to constinusly refresh and get info from the internet. If that's the case with your apps, block their internet connection or change their settings to have it refresh manually.
Also, you can tell some apps not to start on boot up - that might temporaly fix your problem.

I duno about colornote but as for the others, they automaticly refresh using the internet and so like I said in my other post, you have to set it so the either can't access the internet (might as well unistall them in that case) or set their refresh to manual so it only refreshes when you "tap" on them.
Google maps refreshes for your location. That one will be a pain especially if you have the gps on.
If you get over a day of battery life with moderate usage and that you like these app, then I'd say to just live with it. If it's not the case, I suggest getting rid of them but if OS Monitor doesn't show them using your mem/battery, then they don't actually do/change much.

once on the app, hit your menu button (bottom left one ) and you should have a setting option - each app will be different but it mostly comes to the same thing. Also if you don't have any menu option, there should be a (i) kind of image/icon somewhere in the main app page but these are rare. Most app will have their setting menu.
Thanks. I'll try it and see what happens.

How to detach an app from the Play Store

Right, I'm a PowerAMP pro user, but with a pretty old phone. The latest app is working but it's slow and sometimes lags. The poweramp site also offers the old 1.4 version which works right for me. Now, all is fine and dandy but I;m a bit annoyed by the app always showing up there to be updated. So I searched for a method to detach the app from the market and learnt that the bug has been solved long ago and apps can't be detached. So I tried changing the app's signature, of course with no luck, my android dev skills being close to absolute zero.
So I ask you, is there any way to do this? I am not pirating the app, so don't worry
I'm also trying to convince the developer to make an unsigned version of the app specifically for old timers like me, but with no success until now..
Just use LBE Privacy guard and freeze internet connection permission for this particular app..
So it will not connect to net and not telling you that new version is available..
we all should be polite enough to press thanks for anyone who helped US.

If it doesnt need to connect to the internet for anything else you could use droidwall to block it from accessing the playstore
If your rooted you could use blackmart to download the app and never have to update it
Or see the updates notifications saying there's an update

I know Titanium Backup can detach apps, though I am not sure if it is available in the free version. However, I do recommend the paid version of Titanium Backup anyway.

On a related note, is there a way to remove apps from the "My Apps"list? It is really annoying to have to scroll through a list of apps containing tons of apps that you may have tried for a while and then uninstalled when you need to reinstall something. And why is the "My Apps" list in random order and not alphabetical?

As far as I know (and after some quick Googling), there is no way to remove any apps from the giant "My Apps" list. However, I use the Appbrain android market replacement, and it lets you customize your lists and sort them better. You can remove devices from view though.

Ads popping up in notifications.

For the first time in 6 years of Android phones, I just had an ad pop up in my notifications. It was for the Walgreens drug store app. (An app I do not have installed.)
From googling, it seems it's pushed from an app I have installed, but it should be easy to figure out as I've only installed 2 new apps on this phone that I didn't have on my last phone.
Has anyone else experienced this? What apps have you found that do this?
(This is not cool at all.)

Do as guyd says. If it happens again with another app and the notification is still there, hold it until it changes, then press the "i" button that appears. From there you can do the same.
Note that you cannot block notifications from most system apps

A typo in my original post must have made it unclear - the ad was for an app that is not installed. I have no idea what app is pushing the ad.

Regardless, if you hold down on the notification it should show you the source app (not the app that is in the ad, but the app that's pushing the ad) and you'll be able to take action by tapping on the "i" button.

Ugh. I do use Chrome, but I have not visited the Walgreens website on it. (Or ever, anywhere.) I'll see if removing it helps. Thanks.
So now Chrome isn't only the worst desktop browser, it's the worst Android browser. That's an accomplishment.

The ads come from other apps. Chrome has never placed ads in the notifications. This is done by something built into the apps. I forget what it's called of the bat. Airpush I think. Some apps do this to make money when they are free apps. There is an app that will detect any app that does this. Then just uninstall it. The above device will cancel notifications completely from the app causing it.
Had the exact same experience on both my S6 and my wife's. Something fishy, no indication what app caused it.
What carrier are you on? I am on Sprint, and their bloatware apps "Sprint Zone" and "Sprint Fun & Games" like to advertise apps in the notification bar every now and then. I hate it, because there is no way to disable the apps unless I root.

Sprint as well. That's unfortunate as this will be my first non-rooted phone due to Samsung Pay. I was hoping android/Sumsung had come far enough that I didn't need to root/rom, but it looks like I'm in for a frustrating experience.

I think maybe so. I took a screenshot of one today. (I don't know how many have some through as I often just swipe off notifications without looking at them. This was at least the second one today, as right after I swiped one of them away, I decided to make a conscious effort to screenshot the next.) I forgot to press/hold until the "i" shows up to see app info. I'll have to remember that for next time.
Sprint - Featured Apps <-- That's the culprit. You'll want to disable notifications on that application in the settings menu, under all apps, or uninstall it, which is what I did.

Thanks. Also, mine showed the option for uninstall, and it seems to have done so. I wouldn't be surprised it if auto-reinstalls, though. Hopefully this works. THANKS!
Its from Sprint Featured Apps. Block its notifications. It can also be uninstalled from Applications>all>uninstall.
I had that same thing happen with my samsjng galaxy s6 from Sprint. Its infuriating adware bloatware.

Package Disabler Pro and the newest Google Play Services

So the two hate each other. I mean HATE. I can't use Package Disabler Pro to disable even a few bloat apps. Facebook, Instagram, Skype. If I use it for anything I get errors all over. Everything Google starts to crash. gapps, google play services, everything. I finally had to enable everything, reboot and my phone stopped crashing and randomly rebooting. Very sad to see PDP become useless. My battery life improved with all the bloat disabled.

I spent several hours yesterday tinkering. Disabling minimal stuff like the social media apps, the ANT service, Milk player and other minor stuff. Every time it would start to crash and give me issues. I disabled the social media items the old fashion way and am not using PDP right now. I'll play with it more today. I really don't want/need many of that crap running as I have zero use for any of it. I will do the one by one and see what happens.

If I root, its when its been confirmed that Samsung Pay will work with one of those new root cloaking apps (one is an xposed module) works for it. If it does, I'll be back on root in no time.
My issue may be my phone. I couldn't get it to respond for anything, error messages that wouldn't go away long enough to type a letter. I factory reset and the error codes kept coming. Its going to be replaced.

Depends on where the application come from. Most apps from the Play Store are okay and if you want to uninstall something it's probably okay. Just don't go using adb and uninstall any system apps.

It can potentially cause undesirable changes especially if the app is poorly written.
Avoid doing so when possible by not uploading an app for no good reason.
Read reviews about an app first.
Even a Playstore app can cost you a hard reset... did 2 back to back recently caused by a launcher.
If an app is running poorly, uninstall it. Clear the storage for the app first.
Keep an eye on what your apps are doing in the background with data/memory/battery usage.
Don't side load apps unless you -really- trust the source. If so -always- scan it with an online scanner like Virus Total before you install it!!!
Use SD Maid to pick off the remnants of uninstalled apps.

As I said apps from the Play Store are mostly safe as they are constantly being checked by Google. Every once in a while something will slip by but mostly safe. If you are worried activate device security in settings under device care.

Just because an app is "safe" doesn't mean it isn't poorly coded. Bad uninstalls is more a PC issue but Androids aren't completely immune to it.
Just one change hidden (inaccessible) setting change can really screw up your machine. Saw that happen on an e-reader; it globally changed the screen tint and when uninstalled it remained. Had to reload it, toggle that off, uninstall. The was a bloody Goggle apk.
Be it a trojan or bad coding a hard reset is a hard reset.
It's rare for a Playstore Android app to crash and burn the OS but it definitely does happen
As do buggy uninstalls... best not do too many installs or uninstalls together so if there is an issue you can spot it and know where it came from.
This may be the only way to easily correct it...
thank you
