[TUTORIAL] Increase RAM in Micromax A56...Root Needed - Miscellaneous Android Development

Hey Guys...i've found a way after lots of research and experiments a way to increase RAM in Micromax A56 (thanks to xda). Unlike most of the devices A56 supports swap default by its stock kernel.
ROOT NEEDED....BUSYBOX NEEDED. !!!
Note - This Mod May/Will Degrade Your SDCARD Life.
Needed Apps - Swapper for root and Swapper2 (Download these from Playstore)
SETTING UP SWAPPER FOR ROOT
1. Click on Active Swap on boot.
2. Set swap file partition to - "SD Card FAT Partition"
3. Enter "512" or "256" in swap file size(in MB).
4. Click Save it will take some time about 2-4 minutes depending upon the swap file size we created. (you can experiment with the swap file size).
SETTING UP SWAPPER2 :-
1. Open Swapper2.
2. U'll see a black screen, click on ads off.
3. Now go to settings, Make sure you have "Run swapper at startup" box checked. Go to swap place and change it to "/sdcard/swap.swp".
4. Now Click on swap size and choose 256mb(you can experiment with the digits).
5. Go to swappiness and set it to 100.
6. Check the boxes "Safe Unmount" and "Safe Remount".
7. Now go to "Advanced Prefrences"-->Check the box "Reformat swap".
8. Leave everything else as it is...Don't touch anything and exit settings come to main screen of swapper2.
NEXT STEP-----> ACTION..!!!!
1. Click on "ON" Button. It will/may show some fails but don't freak out(its normal), Wait untill it shows "All Done!"
3. Now we are done...!!!! Now check ur sdcard, you will see a file named "swap.swp".
4. Now download Advanced Task Killer from the market and kill all the running apps and go and see ur free RAM. You will see more RAM free than usual. But in actual u have more than that cuz we just created a swap in our SDCARD.
NOW you can play Games which require heavy ram usage ( I love that..!!!) Like Temple Run, Asphalt 6, etc. Some games may still show little lags.
If you want more performance while gaming, download Chainfire3D and All its plugins and play.
If this helped you Click THANKS to help me.
This method can work for other devices too...TRY and SEE...!!!

Test post.

Hope now its visible to other members also.

Hi, I have finally managed to root the A56. Installed the Swapper for Root & the Swapper2 apps from PlayStore.
When I open SfR and select the option 'Active Swap on Boot', there is no option for SD Card FAT Partition. It just comes up blank.
I have created a secondary partition on the SD card using the Mini Home Partition tool as FAT32.
What am I doing wrong??

ur sdcard shud be of FAT filesystem

Does the microSD need to be FAT16 or FAT32??
The microSD has been formatted as FAT32. Does swapper need a new partition to work on as apps2SD does? Or will it work on the default partition?

Mine is working on FAT filesystem...can also work on fat32 no new partition needed.

how much ram do you get after doing this

in running services it shows 40-50mb ram...
it does not show more ram but it is usex when an app which requires more ram is launched.
if u dont understand this clearly...read the true meaning of swapping...on xda or on wikipedia.

maybe there's no ext4 partition?
no coz in v1.7.2 i made partition and of 512mb and moved dalvik-cache to sd and 64mb swap but a2sd is working well in v2 jus the move to sd function is not working as described by mr.creedo himself in the thread...n m still using v1.7.2 with sd-ext...
i think its coz of either rom or the kernel coz v2 is based on cmptly new firmware but in v.1.7.2 it is giving no such problem.
try link2sd...
Dalvik cache to sd is not working for now.Even i tried to do so but it din't work and i had to reflash. May be creed will come up with a solution

I haven't tried partition tool...I partitioned via cwm...
and your secondary partition should be ext2/3, not fat32...
I partitioned ext 4 via windows. Putted ungaze script. Working . Same benchmark as without script. I am on rc 5,5

Het guys please becarefull about the partition thing..
Because its very risky and you better have backup of your sdcard ane save that backups at your PC or notebook..
Some of my friends has been loosing all of his data because of it.
When u first time partitioning sd card, it will remove all your sd card stuff ofcourse. Just put it on desktop and move back when partition is done.

With the Volume Down key (-) and High Volume (+) and navigate to the HOME key Select "advanced";
Select "partition SD Card"
In the next window you should choose the partition size.
If you have a 2GB card to advise you put 512mb 1024mb,
If you have a card with 4GB or 8GB advise putting 2048mb.
And finally select the size of the swap partition for extra memory.
If you have an urge to put 2gb card 128mb,
If you have a card with 4GB or 8GB advise putting 256mb.
enter the Market and install the program Links2SD
to open the program you should choose ext3 and press ok> then superuser permission> and after that restart your phone.
Now press the Options button to display the sub-menu of the program
Made this to take and check the settings, and automatically link-site check in'' automatically''.

Press OK to start, and all your applications ready to go to memory that was created ext3.
Now we will install and configure the Swapper. Lower application, install the application by the Market, after check the Active on Boot Swap on Swap File Position sure "EXT Partition SD Card" in "Swap File Size" set a value as the size of the partition created in ext, I suggest that is a partition of 1024 put 250 if a partition of 2048 put 512 of superuser permissions and restart the phone.

I wouldn't recommend swapper...
long story short, it'll start affecting performance...and do more bad than good...
swap partition is basically virtual ram...but the problem with this is, our phones ram is fast, while even the best of sd cards can't match that...
so you may get better performance initially, but soon you'll regret having a swap partition...

[Q] sd-ext Mounting problem in galaxy fit

HELP!!!! Link2SD not mounting Sd-ext partition
every time while opening this app it asks for type of partition I'm using and then asks for reboot
I chose ext3 as I'm using teejay's CWM
I even check the type of partition using Minitool and it says ext3 and primary
why Link2Sd not mounting sd-ext then?? plz Help
I'm using chocobread 3.2
And as it already has S2E so before doing all this I had uninstalled S2E using root explorer method.
I selected 512mb size
swap size= 0mb
I'm using verbatim class 4 sd card(4 GB)
I followed these steps to partition SD card and Setting up Link2SD by A.cid given in thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27132543#post27132543
Q) How to create a sd partition?
A) You will need
• A good micro sd-card, with a class greater than 4
(the class is usually printed on the card itself, it’s the number inside the letter ‘C’)
• A rooted galaxy fit running android 2.3.x (preferably on a stock rom), with ClockworkMod recovery
Steps:
• Backup all your data.
• Reboot into CWM.
• Go under “advanced”>”partition sd card”.
• Select the size of your second partition (On my first try, I made a partition of 1024MB but found it too big with a lot of space unused, so I deleted the partition and made a new one of 512MB)
This is your choice, choose one depending on the total size of your card, the no. of apps/games you’ll have etc.
• After selecting that, select swap size as 0MB (This one also is your choice, but I’ll explain why to take 0MB, and not anything else)
• Now wait till the process is completed, and reboot.
As far as I know, CWM v5 makes a partition of EXT3 format.
Q) Why to select swap size as 0MB?
A) Swap partition is made with the objective of utilizing it as VIRTUAL RAM. Now this may sound as a good thing, but in reality the ram in our fit is way faster than the average class 10 micro sd-card. So, instead of speeding up your system, it will slow down your system horribly after a certain point.
So, in short, you shouldn’t be using a swap partition, hence there is no point in creating one if you are not utilizing it.
Steps to setup Link2sd:
• Download Link2sd from Play Store (it’s a free app).
• After it gets installed, run it, and allow root access.
• You will get a message to select the format of your sd partition, select “ext3”.
• Link2sd will then automatically create mount scripts that it requires to work, and will then tell you to reboot your phone.
• Do a proper reboot, and not a ‘hot reboot’.
• After rebooting, open up Link2sd, press menu then select “settings”.
• Select/check the options “automatically link newly installed applications to sd”, “auto link notification”, “relink lib files at boot” (and “fast scroll”, if you want).
• For “install location” option, select “internal”.
• Then go to “auto link settings” and select/check all the three options (you can skip/ unselect “link dalvik-cache file” if you wish)
• Done
Now, every new app that you will install will automatically be moved to your sd ext partition.[/INDENT]

you can mount your ext partition from cwm recovery - mount and storage - mount sd ext and reboot ...then in link2sd go in storage info you can see the sizes of partitions

[Q] Rooted, now what?

Hi, I just used superoneclick to root my LG P500, and I presumed I could then removing junk apps and copying everything over to my SD card, however it seems I can't?
I installed busybox but no idea what that does! Am I missing something as I don't know what to do next?
Thank you.

Ok, just installed it and it does delete crap, and gives an option to move to SD card but it just hangs and then says 'Failure' - invalid install location.
Does the SD card have to be formatted in a different way? If so, how?

i think you have rooted your phone but your still on stock rom
you should move to custom roms now
but if your sticking to stock rom for now
for moving app's to sd card try this guide
http://lgp500-optimusone.blogspot.in/2011/10/how-to-moveinstall-apps-to-sd-card-on.html
I'm using stock ROM yes. I think I need to format the SD card to ext2 or something. I only want to be able to copy everything to SD.
I tried making a partition as it says in the instructions, but the SD card is recognised as a 1GB card now in my phone rather than the 16GB it is.
It said to create a 14GB partition in ext2 format in order to transfer all apps to the card. If I do that though, 1GB isn't enough for all my music! Confused.

But surely, all I'm doing is partitioning the card so that 1GB is set to ext 2, meaning only 1GB of the card can be used for apps that can't normally be stored on the FAT32 partition?
Ok - since my last post, I did what you said so partitioned 1GB ext 2. When I open Link2SD, I get asked to choose the file system of my SD cards second partition. I can choose between:
ext2, ext2, ext4, and FAT32. Whatever I select, I get an error message - 'Mount script cannot be created. mount: Device or resource busy. ext2 maynot be supported on your device. Try FAT32 on the second partition'.
I then choose FAT32 and it says 'mount script cannot be created. mount: invalid argument'.
Just rebooted the phone and Link2SD doesn't ask me the above anymore, but now when I try again to move the Facebook app to the SD card, I still get the error:
Failure: pkg: /data/app/com.facebook.katana-1.apk Failure [INSTALL_FAILED_INVALID_INSTALL_LOCATION]
In yet 'Whatsapp' which usually has to stay on the phones memory has no problems being sent to the SD card in Link2SD.
Any ideas please?
Ok this is weird... I formatted the card again to FAT32, and then tried transferring whatsapp to the SD card and it worked.
Uninstalled Facebook and reinstalled it from the play store and that also can be moved! It's really strange but it works. I thought you had to partition the card.
I do have other questions though. Can you keep the stock rom, and still have everything you download auto install to the SD card?
What is busybox for? Do I need it?
What can I do to speed the phone up now?
Thanks.
Busybox is necessary....no need to partition the card......the failure error may occur if u are moving something from rom to external sd....first move it to internal....to speed up ur phone change the kernel...
.thundervn kernel is best for stock...make sure u hav clockworkmod recovery installed....if not....download rom manager from play store....

Just so you all know, I only want to use stock rom. I don't want to be messing about with custom roms.
The SD card isn't partitioned, and 95% of all apps seem to be going across to the SD card no problems, but I get that 'failure'message with an app called 'proboards' which I downloaded from the play store - any reason why? LinkSD does say it requires a partition but it says that for all the other apps that transferred across fine.
I've also noticed my internal memory is still slowly decreasing even when apps are being transferred to SD - what can I do to stop this?
Finally, I bought 'SetCPU' app for my phone. Not 100% how to use it but when I set the min and max cpu speed to the max my phone can offer, my phone seems much quicker - is this ok to do?
Thanks

You can try the ressurection rom . Its stock rom with some little tweaks dat increase the speed , battery life and overall performance. .. it also allows u to u set-cpu to do what its meant to do. .. over clock your device so that u can enjoy the games that seemed to lag .. and the rom also supports moving apps to the SD card

Really to get the full benefit out of rooting you'll want to play with some custom roms but as for the cpu setting the minimum higher will just cause your battery to drain really fast. What you want is a custom kernal that will allow you to overclock the cpu past 600 on the max end.

Ok, so at the moment I have transferred all my apps to the SD card. How would I go about flashing it then?
What rom should I use?
How will having a new rom stock the internal memory from being eaten up? And why is it still being eaten up now that they are all on the SD card?
Finally, surely if you overclock, it will use even more battery? I've just got it set to the maximum cpu so surely it must be improving something??

Ok, so at the moment I have transferred all my apps to the SD card. How would I go about flashing it then?
What rom should I use?
How will having a new rom stock the internal memory from being eaten up? And why is it still being eaten up now that they are all on the SD card?
Finally, surely if you overclock, it will use even more battery? I've just got it set to the maximum cpu so surely it must be improving something??

For rom go for Ressurection .. i can get u to the correct forum ... clockspeed in a cpu means the no of iinstructions it processes per sec .. so a cpu running at 600mhz will execute 600 instructions per sec while one running at 800 will execute 800 instructions per sec ... basically it gives u a performance boost at the cost of battery.. and our phones are det at 122-600 by default so u cant get a performance boost but on the other hand it helps with battery
pls hit thanks if I helped in any way

Why not try "Ultimate Backup by JRummy". It helps move any app to SD Card...no need to flash a custom rom.

Anakin, so I wasted money on the setcpu app then? It does seem much quicker since changing the min/max speed to both be 600mhz. Think originally it was set to 320 each.

internal mem

hello guys I installed cm9 build 9 today after that I used recovery selected 1024 for ext and 0 swap after that remounted script on link2sd and I rebooted but I dont think it worked plz.see
Dude seriously http://forum.xda-developers.com/sitesearch.php?q=htc explorer internal memory at least try before creating a thread
been there, many times...
settings would give you the app info installed in internal memory, regardless it is linked to your sd-ext partition or simply residing in internal storage.
open link2sd, menu > storage info.... it shows graphically how much memory of what partition is used up. if under the sd-ext partition it says, "not mounted", then the script was not mounted properly.
you may want to re-do the process.
but, still you may consider what shortyoko has to say...(a bit of research is must, i spent 3 months on researchin )

i already spent 2 and am little tired so i though would do all steps and ask in general
anyway it does nt say not mounted and does link2sd does increase mem in the sys menu thats the storage and i can only see my mem at link2sd if thats the case i guess i did correct and also link2sd doesnt move all apps or does it?
The system partition remains the same. You can't extend it or something. Well, the very idea of increasing internal memory using is that link2sd uses the sd-ext partition to store all the app files, leaving just the app icon & a link to it's corresponding files in the sd-ext part..
Just press hold an app in link2sd > create link > select all 3 options (link apk, link data, link lib files) > then press ok / next (watever it says). If this is succesfull, you will get a msg saying, "app successfully linked to the second partition".
There you go !! All done.

Ok..
Now before increasing memory i would tell you take a bckup of your apps.. You never what may go wrong.. You can use titanium backup for that..
There are two methods of increasing memory:
1, Through Mounts2sd app
2. Through script.
Personally i use scrip.. As it doesnt need any configuration.. and you can see the size in apps which can be seen in settings..
Mounts2sd requires configuration.
Make a backup of your card before partition as it will format your card
Now for partition:
Go to recovery
Go to advance
select partition sd card
Select ext3 or ext4
Select the size you want
Then select swap size 0
You have partition your card and it can be used to increase memory..
Now to install scripts:
You can check this post for script Here
As you are on class 4 use int2ext+ or int2ext(this may slow your apps closing and opening time)
Now copy the above script in system/etc/init.d
How to do:
Using File explorer with root permissions
I personally use es file explorer as i find it easy..
So open es explorer
Touch option key right of home key.
Go to tools-> Root explorer -> Click on off button it will ask for permission allow it-> now again tap on root explore-> select mount R/W set it from RO to RW
Now copy the script..
After copying select the file by long pressing on it-> Select properties Go to permissions-> Tick on all the check boxes all 9 not the bottom 3..
Now restart your device..
Vola!! Internel memory increased..
Thanks a lot. I will try tonight. Thanks a lot. Hope it works. :good:
Can you please provide me scripts download link? that post is too big..

Then delete that partition..
For this you have to use partition wizard on your PC..
Connect your card to PC select both the drives delete them then create it again you will get the original size.. Go to recovery select 2048 instead of 1024 simple..
Hit thanks button buddy that is needed instead of saying.
