Does the nexus 4 come with a screen protector pre-applied?
Thanks in advance!
There is a factory piece of thin plastic covering the screen, I wouldn't call it a screen protector.
Does it stay on the screen or is it supposed to get peeled off?
Is suppose to be peel off..
You can always use it temporary while you wait for your screen protector to arrive..!
It is meant to be peeled off, as there is small printing on it indicating where the power and volume buttons are, but the touchscreen still works when you keep it on. It might peel or come off if you slide the phone in and out of your pocket though.
I found that the "screen protector" mentioned above feels almost perfect, except the + and - with the power sign. The closest thing I can think to that texture with no rainbow effect are spigen and martin fields.
If only the piece of plastic was actually clear, I would have loved it.
The factory plastic film is meant to be pulled off, but it doubles as a screen protector suprisingly well.
I've had them on there for a month now and both are still fine. I used to put the phone in my pocket without any other protecting (e.g. case).
Only recently I pulled off the front protector because the symbols printed on it really started to annoy me. I bought a Bugatti skinny leather pouch to protect the phone while it's in my pocket.
Front is now naked and the back still has the factory film which still clings onto the phone like it just came out of the box.
YMMV of course!
Sick! So I guess that means I won't have to go window shopping on eBay for a screen protector! Any idea on how long the pre-applied protector will last me until it starts to peel off?
I still wouldn't recommend keeping the stock screen protector on, just because its not really there for protection, its meant to be taken off. If you'd like, take a look at the "Best Screen Protector" thread, they should have some pretty good recommendations

The factory screen cover worked great. I had mine on my phone for a week or so. (Waited for a case before taking mine off.)
It probably would stay on for a lot longer, depending on how you use your phone and such. As the other guy said above the + & - started to bother me a bit near the end of the week that I used it. Haha

I've used the factory screen protector for over a month and thought it was really good (aside from the abovementioned power and volume button symbols). Unfortunately I accidentally dropped my phone and it hit the edge of some metal thing and it dug holes into the factory protector, but my phone itself is still mint w/o a scratch. Not sure whether it's because I was just lucky or because of the protector.
Anyways, after that I went and bought one made for the nexus 4 from a small accessories shop. But since the nexus 4 edges are curved down, it comes off on the sides and I had to temporarily put 4 pieces of clear tape while I search for a more fitted protector .
Instead of getting screen protectors on computer I would go to local SuperMall and they almost always have ghost armor booths that you pay them 10-20 dollars and they put ghost armor on your phone on all sides with no air bubbles and some even have lifetime guarantee

This sounds interesting. Has anyone done a Nexus 4 in ghost armor? Experience or pics?
I recommend Zagg screen protectors. They are really good!

You do realize that those "brand name" screen protectors turn out to be placebos most of the time, right? There're hardly any difference between those and the one's you can get off eBay for 33 cents each (if you get the three-pack, that is).
I just purchased this: http://www.spigen.com/cell-phone/google/nexus-4/google-nexus-4-screen-protector-steinheil-dual.html
So I hope it comes before or the same time my Nexus 4 Does.. but if it doesn't then I plan to leave the stock plastic film the phone comes with til my dual screen protector arrives from Spigen.

Why didn't you just get one of those screen protectors off eBay? They're hella cheap (3 for $1.50 if I recall correctly), and probably came out of the same factory as that Spigen sp.

That's what I have on my galaxy s3 right now... And somehow my screen still got scratched... Had a screen protector on from day one. Replaced it a couple times already. The cheap screen protector really does suck lol. Had this one on for a month and it's all scratched up already.
The one I purchased for my s3 off eBay were six for $2. Horrible.

I personally use screen protector on all my devices..
some "brand name" ones and the cheap ones that cost less than a dollar each on ebay..
The cheap ones from ebay tend to get micro scratch so much more easily a
And soon or later the middle starts to wear out from all those swiping.
Those brand name ones are usually much thicker ....
And you probably dont have to replace them before you replace your phone..
Hi all.
I'm about to get my first N4, and I read and hear everywhere that it's like the most fragile phone ever. I did my research and I can't find a decent review about any of the cases in the market.
A case purpose is to protect the phone from a drop. And given that there's no drop test of a n4 with a case I wanted to ask for your feedback.
How many times?
Which case?
How nasty was the drop?
What side did it land?
Of course if you have a bad experience to tell you're more than welcome to share.
This is my first thread and English is not my first language. If I made some mistake please tell me.
Thanks in advance
Once, maybe. It's hard to know how much damage the fall would've done. Might've just scratched the sides, might've shattered part of the glass. Might also have done pretty much nothing. It fell flat on its front, as far as I remember, and it was on bathroom tiles from.. about 1.5 meters. There've been a couple of minor falls as well, which, I think, would've have done anything more than maybe minor scratching without a case. Drop tests won't really help, unless someone would do larger studies. With a single fall, there are so many variables..
The case: diztronic TPU, but as of today, I maybe would look for one where the buttons are easier to press.
In general, the phone isn't as fragile as I first feared. Even with tight pants and quite a bit of pressure (accidentally sat down on it once on my bed), nothing has really happened so far.
Has anyone here decided to forego a case entirely after deciding the phone didn't need a case?
Usually I drop mine at 0.7metres, both my LG Bumper and a ****ty tpu case have saved my ass numerous times. But without my back and from screenprotectors the glass would have been broken. I have dropped it maybe 10 times, half of it on hard wood or cement

Phone was sitting on top of a blanket on my car, my friend pulls the blanket without realizing my phone was there. The phone flew several feet and landed hard on the pavment screen side down. I ran over to my phone and was amazed when there was no crack or anything. My 12$ case saved my butt!
Using diztronic tpu case. Dropped 3 times from chest height on marble/concrete ground.
Not a single scratch. Not a single crack.

I had a variety of cases on the phone and never dropped it. Tried it "naked" and was hooked with the slim feel and the quality look.
Then a few weeks I dropped it getting out of my car onto the concrete from about 3 feet (hand to ground)
Landed on the corner. Front and back glass both completely shattered.
Had to replace the screen and am living with the shattered back.
and extra $150 and hours of my time down the drain.
Don't risk it. It isn't worth it. I will never go without a case again. Just not worth the risk or cost.
Since then I dropped it from the same height with my TPU case on. Not a scratch or any sign of damage.
DEFINITELY worth it. Only takes one drop to destroy this beautiful phone.
My rubberized matte Dizitronic saved my phone every time I've dropped it, except for the one time when I didn't have it on. Now I have several small cracks and dings on the face. Perfect.
Never. I'm really careful.
Original bumper - 6 drops - all corner strikes on variety of surfaces including concrete from heights up to 4 1/2 feet.
Total score: 0 scratches, 0 cracks. Bumper had some slightly scuffed chrome.
I've switched to the Poetic now but not had any drops so far. The thinner Poetic bumper makes the phone easier to grip (for me) but I doubt it would provide as much protection.
My case has saved my phone more than once, I constantly drop my phone from waist height (not on purpose of course) I've had 3 different cases I've dropped my phone most with my first and 3rd case. First case was the Diztronic TPU case, third (and current) case is the Rengke hybrid TPU/hard back.
My cases do a good job of protecting my phone I'm not worried. When I drop it it's usually on concrete or tile flooring. Up till now I get lazy with babying my phone when I'm sitting on a chair and I placed the phone on my lap, if it falls it falls, my case is good for it.
My all in one wallet case has well protected my N4 on a few occasions.
Never dripped it since I got it on release; p

Dropped mine quite a few times, once in particular where it sort of backflipped a couple times from chest height.
Not a single scratch nor scuff anywhere thanks to a cheap Remax TPU case.
Dropped my N4 from all sorts of heights and angles and it came out unscathed each time. Ringke case is definitely a great buy.
Its constantly saving it. The back and the sides would've been scratched as hell if I didn't have a case on

my TPU case has protected it alot, im careful over the device in public but since i had the case from day one i know how much it can handle,i dropped it around the house fell off tables often, tossed it on the table like you do to a wallet.
ive tried those thin cases with the top and bottom exposed and that is the point of impact for me so i cant use them
This phone definitely needs a case with as much glass as it's sporting on both sides. Both the Ringke Fusion and now the Ionic case that I prefer have saved it from a few falls. The one time that I dropped it when it didn't have the case on it, it shattered the tempered glass protector but the screen itself was scratch free.

I completely agree. When i first bought my phone brand new, i put a slim hard case on it, it went to the edged but didn't cover the front the top of bottom edges. dropped it onto the concrete when i was getting out of the car, maybe 2-3 feet. I crack on the screen and the whole digitizer broke. Cost me $150 to replace and since then I've kept it in a diztronic tpu case. I've dropped it multiple times now from different heights and its been in perfect condition because that case covers all the edges. I highly recommend a case.

That happened to me with my Galaxy S2. Dropped it getting out of the car. Didn't bother replacing the screen, just bout the N4 lol
Now I have the N4 with the iLoome tempered glass protector and the Ionic case and it's been great.
There have been a lot of threads and post about SPIGEN cases in particular scratching the metal frame of the N4.
What cases do NOT do this?
Thanks in advance
I'm using a Spigen Slim Armor for a week so far and no scratches on the frame. Don't see how it would either as only the soft inner tpu liner makes contact with it.
None, because it's not the case but the polished aluminum lip of the Note 4 that's the problem. Unless you live in a hermetically sealed environment, it'll probably end up scratched.
A few people have reported scratches with the Spigen cases but it'll happen with an otterbox, an UAG, a hardshell or a TPU case. For every person who doesn't have scratches, there will one someone who has scratches from using the same case.
Hey, perfect protection. I had S4 with S-View cover with Qi charging and it was fantastic. None scratches and wireless charging is awesome. I bought Note 4 (SM-N910F) Black with Samsung EP-VN910I Black. Fantastic

I'm also beginning to think that it's not the case but small bits of dirt being trapped between the case and frame that might be the real issue.
On some cases it's the material and on others it's particles. Either way, the aluminum is going to get marked up. Just can't worry about it....
I wish Samsung would have just stuck to plastic instead of trying to make it feel premium. Since I always put a case on my phone, I never see or touch the outside of the naked phone and would not have to worry about the metal frame. The all plastic phone was fine with me.
just put a piece of scotch tape over the metal frame before installing the case

Kapton tape would work better. The adhesive is silicone based, so it will rub off easier.

I think I'm doing the same. Picked up a leather pouch from Amazon (bear motion) for 10 bucks when I need it.
I have my phone in a Ringke case since the moment I took it out of the box. My boyfriend doesn't use a case at all. Yesterday I took my phone out of the case to see how the metal rim is holding up in comparison to his, which is all scratched up. They are both just as damaged! Bottom line: it's not the cases, it will happen regardless. It appears to be so sensitive that the slightest speck of dust creeping in a case, or in a pocket, or bag, ruins it.

That tape is cheap on eBay; plenty $1 links for 5mm x 100 feet , but lead time is about 2 weeks; slow boat from China.
So far, I've only scratched the edges near the USB port (minor). Odd how the cases don't offer more protection around the ports. Should have just left the shipping tape on until this arrived. I've dropped a lot of phone's but haven't cracked a screen and don't want to start doing that so I'll try the generous application of the tape and hope it sticks well with swapping the case a lot because it looks like I'll be using a soft case for home and my Verus Thor for outings.
Thanks for the suggestion.
My Note 4 is 4 days old and I have removed one of my spigen cases a few times. The metal frame has got a few nicks. My iPhone 5s, which I babied, has tons of nicks and scratches. Though not completely visible unless you look for them. With these aluminum/metal phones this is normal.
I feel like the first scratch/nick on your phone is like the first scratch/dent on your new car. The first one is always the one that eats away at you the most and even if it's invisible to everyone else, you can pinpoint the exact location of the damage. I'm kind of surprised that there hasn't been a conclusive way to restore the chamfered edges yet though.
I haven't noticed it being sensitive. Mine has been naked since day 1. Owned it for a month or so and even have been bold and put it in the cup holder when driving. Not a single scratch *knock on wood*. I am looking into vinyls though, that's my current new trend. Started with my old m8, now gonna skin the note.
The Otterbox Defender and Commuter Series cases do not scratch the frame. I was very skeptical with the Defender Series, but was surprised by the results.

I'm not saying that any of our phones are deeply scratched either, but there is no doubt that the coating is not durable, as reported by many users.

Do you think a Defender case and a tempered glass screen protector could go together? I'm considering Otterbox but only if I can use my own screen protector.

Hi all
got the edge plus with the clear view case now i have exactly the same issue with the smaller edge with little dots and a scratch on the screen.
contacted Samsung and they say their is nothing official for the Edge Plus so the chances are they will not replace the screen free of charge.
is anyone out their in the same boat as me, is their any official notification from Samsung covering the Edge Plus
Thanks
Same sh*t for me, my brother has the S6 edge and had this problem, and I bought the clear view cover for my edge+ thinking it was fixed, after 3 days, noticed few scratches when I was on sunlight, 2 weeks with the phone and already pissed out 'cause of stupid things like these...
Sent from my SM-G928F using XDA Free mobile app
I got this case but after reading about the issues with the S6 I only used it after installing a screen protector. I then noticed small pinpricks in the protector after using the case and I could even see the indentation of a circle where the magnet touches the screen. Fortunately most of the marks disappeared from the protector after a few days but it appears that they have not resolved this in the design. I also found that the back of the case itself scratches too easily - it is already showing several scratches even though I have been very careful in handling it. I am surprised they sell it as an official case given the known problems.
The clear view case is definitely one to stay away from. Although it added to the beauty of the phone, it just was not practical, offered no screen interaction when closed and over time I would imagine it would wear out quite quickly. Returned mine after 2 days (before any scratches set in) and opted for the official SView cover which gave me back the functionality that I was used to. Having had the original SView cover on my Note3, after 2 years of hard use it really protected my phone well. The case is in gold and looks better than I expected. Fingers crossed this new SView cover for my edge+ will hold up the same.
i have the clear view case for almost 2 weeks now and not a single scratch or dent visible; maybe you guys had some dust or smth in your pockets that went inbetween the case and the screen?
I had for few days the phone didn't scratch but the cover is completely scratched and it's just awful now ?

I've had my gold clearview case for a week and it's looking a little bit scratchy but nothing too serious.
I just wonder where people's expectations lie in these cases. Of course we don't expect to see scratches on the screen when there's a protective case over it but the case couldn't have caused the scratches. Previous S-View and flap cases were quite soft and spongy, these ones are tough so grit could easily get pressed against the glass. If anything, Samsung should provide a screen cover with the case. I use a plastic screen cover anyway because I find the bare glass too slippery at times.
As for scratches on the case itself, well that's what it's for! It takes the hit so your phone doesn't, and with a mirror finish you'll see some wear and tear. If you wanted a case that maintains its original appearance then don't pick mirror finish, clear hard shell or light colours - grab a dark silicone thing to wrap around your phone and it will look the same in 2 years as it did the day you bought it. Next we'll be seeing case protector films to keep the case from degrading!

Mate,
I am a very careful user 1.5 years with M8 without any case and it still looks brand new. But a "Official Samsung case" I expect it to be a bit more durable and not prone to so much scratches and this case ain't cheap either. Now Clear case by Spigen no no scratches on the case or phone. I'm happy with the performance. I chose Clear view case from Samsung so I can take advantage of it's features.
I've bought the clear view case for my black S6E+ and I can confirm that it does indeed scratch the screen.
The first scratches appeared after something like 3 days of usage, so I've placed spigen ultra crystal to protect screen from further damage and to mask the spots.
I thought that maybe the reason was that I've carried the phone in the case in my pocket one day. But to my rage I've noticed that the case have damged the screen protector within 2-4 hours after applying it and this time there was no pocket to blame, I was home with my little girl sick so I've only moved the phone from one room to another always carrying it in the hand.
I've contaced Samsung Poland by their facebook account and they advised to report the problem to authorised service center in order to assess the damage, but I've let it go - I dont think they have much experience with replacing the screen in this particular device and I was afraid that the final effect may be in fact even worse.
So I replaced the Spigen with another one (~20$ went straight to the bin) and I stay away from the clear view case. At the beginning I was using S-View Cover (highly recommended) but I settled now with Rock TPU (way slimmer and better than Nillkin Nature or Spigen Liquid).
I've compared clear view cases for S6 and S6E+ and it is obviuos that they tried to improve the design by adding a kind of "lip" along the internal edge of the flap so I doesnt rest at the whole screen all the time. This means that the scratches will now be placed (as it was in my case) along the edges of the screen thus giving additional meaning to "S6 Edge"
It does have oleophobic coating and yes it seems to be able to heal minor scratches so thats a plus, but it really doesnt matter as long as the case meant to PROTECT the screen actually DAMAGES it.
Thanks for that. Im glad i went for the S-view instead, i had it on my Note 4 previously without a single scratch.
In UK Samsung acknowledged that clear view case causes scratches on s6 edge and they are replacing screens (only once) plus adding screen protector, wondering if its the same for s6edge+. Worth asking samsung helpline
Mine did it after just a few days. I hate flip covers anyway. But I can't un-scratch the screen.
Ugh...
Chiffon Method to avoid scratches
Chiffon method to avoid scratches
Here is something that came to my mind using Chiffon fabric to put inside the cover to protect the screen, if the screen is still prone to scratches after this, means that the screen is pure crap.
If you don't want to use the Chiffon one, pay attention not to use one made from plastic.
Material:
- A cut of Chiffon fabric, in Mexico costs 1 dolar per meter.
- Transaparent glue, the one used in school that is water washable, in case of error, it can be safely removed
PROCEDURE: (Very complex)
- Glue the fabric into the inside of the cover as you will see in the picture
That's it, is possible to use any mostly transparent fabric in cotton or polyester that is like Chiffon or better, I found this one here.
NOTE: The pictures are very bad quality, looking at the phone is mostly the same using the fabric compared to not using it.
NOTE 2: Inside the cover is mostly the same in black, the bad lighting where I shoot it creates that gray halos, is pure black and if you are a purist you can do it much better than me.
NOTE 3: "CON" mean WITH and "SIN" means Whithout
No offence but it looks really terrible...

I am new to Samsung (switched from Apple), I was wondering if you buy a case, does the case need to cover the curved edges of the screen? Back on the older iPhones the edges of the glass were the most fragile, when a case wouldn't cover these edges its essentially useless. Is this the same for Samsung?

Absolutely not. My Otterbox on my S9 wraps around just a tiny bit but enough to protect the edge. The screen also doesn't touch the surface if the phone is face down. I expect it will be the same with the S10.

Not useless but without phone insurance there is always a risk of doing screen damage, my s7 edge took many drops and was fine. Until 2 times; once it cracked at the back, never knew until I removed the beetle case and worst was when I was getting out of the car once, it was on my lap, I forgot it was there as I got distracted whilst talking. It fell from 2 feet face down onto a tiny sharp stone, I picked the phone seemed OK just a tiny nick I thought , on the tempered screen protector. So I thought, but that nick was enough to do the damage and my screen although not crack was done, kept flickering, banding pinkish hue. I was only 12 months into a 18 or 24 month contract. Luckily I 2as able to nab a Nokia 8 cheap (great phone BTW).
I plan not to make that mistake and will be going insurance this time. And a flip case, dropped Nokia few times and the flip case saved it.
