pre-applied screen protector - Nexus 4 Accessories

Does the nexus 4 come with a screen protector pre-applied?
Thanks in advance!

There is a factory piece of thin plastic covering the screen, I wouldn't call it a screen protector.

Does it stay on the screen or is it supposed to get peeled off?

Is suppose to be peel off..
You can always use it temporary while you wait for your screen protector to arrive..!

It is meant to be peeled off, as there is small printing on it indicating where the power and volume buttons are, but the touchscreen still works when you keep it on. It might peel or come off if you slide the phone in and out of your pocket though.

I found that the "screen protector" mentioned above feels almost perfect, except the + and - with the power sign. The closest thing I can think to that texture with no rainbow effect are spigen and martin fields.
If only the piece of plastic was actually clear, I would have loved it.

The factory plastic film is meant to be pulled off, but it doubles as a screen protector suprisingly well.
I've had them on there for a month now and both are still fine. I used to put the phone in my pocket without any other protecting (e.g. case).
Only recently I pulled off the front protector because the symbols printed on it really started to annoy me. I bought a Bugatti skinny leather pouch to protect the phone while it's in my pocket.
Front is now naked and the back still has the factory film which still clings onto the phone like it just came out of the box.
YMMV of course!

Sick! So I guess that means I won't have to go window shopping on eBay for a screen protector! Any idea on how long the pre-applied protector will last me until it starts to peel off?

I still wouldn't recommend keeping the stock screen protector on, just because its not really there for protection, its meant to be taken off. If you'd like, take a look at the "Best Screen Protector" thread, they should have some pretty good recommendations

The factory screen cover worked great. I had mine on my phone for a week or so. (Waited for a case before taking mine off.)
It probably would stay on for a lot longer, depending on how you use your phone and such. As the other guy said above the + & - started to bother me a bit near the end of the week that I used it. Haha

I've used the factory screen protector for over a month and thought it was really good (aside from the abovementioned power and volume button symbols). Unfortunately I accidentally dropped my phone and it hit the edge of some metal thing and it dug holes into the factory protector, but my phone itself is still mint w/o a scratch. Not sure whether it's because I was just lucky or because of the protector.
Anyways, after that I went and bought one made for the nexus 4 from a small accessories shop. But since the nexus 4 edges are curved down, it comes off on the sides and I had to temporarily put 4 pieces of clear tape while I search for a more fitted protector .

Instead of getting screen protectors on computer I would go to local SuperMall and they almost always have ghost armor booths that you pay them 10-20 dollars and they put ghost armor on your phone on all sides with no air bubbles and some even have lifetime guarantee

This sounds interesting. Has anyone done a Nexus 4 in ghost armor? Experience or pics?

I recommend Zagg screen protectors. They are really good!

You do realize that those "brand name" screen protectors turn out to be placebos most of the time, right? There're hardly any difference between those and the one's you can get off eBay for 33 cents each (if you get the three-pack, that is).

I just purchased this: http://www.spigen.com/cell-phone/google/nexus-4/google-nexus-4-screen-protector-steinheil-dual.html
So I hope it comes before or the same time my Nexus 4 Does.. but if it doesn't then I plan to leave the stock plastic film the phone comes with til my dual screen protector arrives from Spigen.

Why didn't you just get one of those screen protectors off eBay? They're hella cheap (3 for $1.50 if I recall correctly), and probably came out of the same factory as that Spigen sp.

That's what I have on my galaxy s3 right now... And somehow my screen still got scratched... Had a screen protector on from day one. Replaced it a couple times already. The cheap screen protector really does suck lol. Had this one on for a month and it's all scratched up already.
The one I purchased for my s3 off eBay were six for $2. Horrible.

I personally use screen protector on all my devices..
some "brand name" ones and the cheap ones that cost less than a dollar each on ebay..
The cheap ones from ebay tend to get micro scratch so much more easily a
And soon or later the middle starts to wear out from all those swiping.
Those brand name ones are usually much thicker ....
And you probably dont have to replace them before you replace your phone..

Anyone using the factory screen film as a protector?

I am and it isn't a half-bad screen protector. With all the problems people are having with some of the protectors and the proximity sensor I decided to hold off a while before ordering a decent protector and until then figured I'd just keep the factory film on.
After polishing it up with a microfiber cloth it is pretty clear and doesn't drag too much.
One issue is the printed volume +/- symbols at the side as well as the power-button symbol on the top righthand corner. These can be off-putting and get in the way. The other is the peel-off tab is near the top-right corner above the power-button symbol and can be a little sharp. I think eventually it will start to peel off there if used for more than a few days or weeks.
I have a cheap 3-pack coming from Amazon and will probably replace the factory protector as soon as they arrive but if it wasn't for the printing on the original film I'd maybe use it a little longer until the Spigen protector fixes their proximity sensor cut-out issue.
Oh my god, I'm gonna find you and peel it off myself.

LOL, Sounds like you'd hate me too
Me and the girlfriend are both using the factory front and back screen protectors as well.. We can't seem to decide on a screen protector/case combo...
We both like Seidio cases, but stuck on screen protectors.. and still not sure if seidio will support Qi charging (most likely not)...
I'm still using the factory screen protector as well. I ordered some before receiving my phone but it hasn't come in yet.
I used them for like a week until they started peeling off haha. The screen is so much smoother without them!
I was surprised how long they stay on
I left the factory one on for a few days. Around day 3, with no previous signs of degradation, it peeled off all by itself in my pocket (nothing else in there). The aftermarket ones adhere much better to the screen, so if you don't want to be caught out and about with no protector, I'd recommend changing it as soon as possible.
Guilty! Mine is still on also. I am still waiting on my screen protectors to come in. But the N4 is not my main phone yet, and wont be until i get the screen protectors and case. Until then its just another extra phone i have laying around.
I plan on keeping the one on the back
I'm using it till my Spigen gets here. It's actually pretty good apart from the icons from volume and power tho.
I kept mine on too. Albeit only for a couple of days because I sent it in for replacement. I'm hoping my Clarivue SPs are here by the time my new one gets here. I'll still keep my back one on until I figure out what case I want. Maybe even after to keep any potential scratches off of the back glass.
Gotta think about resale value.

yeah, i have mine on too. Problem is the definitely not as adhesive as other screen protectors. Orange peeling in an out of my pocket. Still waiting for my xtremeguard to come to replace it asap. Tho everyone claims it being gorilla glass and no doubt i believe it is, its still not highly scratch resistance i think.

I am as well - glad to see I'm not alone Got my clear I-Blason case as well today and now, I see some bubbles. Am going to search for some skins tonight.
<== Guilty as charged. I did order the Skinomi screen protector set (front/back/sides) but I wont have it until Mon/Tues, etc. I do feel confident that this "stock" screen protector will work until I figure out how to properly install the Skinomi product, as I don't have much experience installing the "wet" style of screen protectors.
It looks like any sort of phone case will keep the original protector from peeling off, at least for a little while. I hope... :good:
I am not ashamed at all, and thanks to the OP for bringing this up!
Listen it works, and it's classy as f#$k too.
Even has these very subtle handy +/- signs to let me know where the volume buttons are.
You can tell LG put alot of thought into this compared to the cling film that samsung put on my Gnexus.
When my screen protector comes, I am going to apply it OVER this. That's how much I love it.
I'm keeping mine on the back because i cant see it anyway with my case and my first n4 got a back scratch in 3 days so im kinda paranoid.
4 days in and so far the factory skin is still like new front and back.
Of course I did peel the side ones off right away.
If not for the +/- marks I think I might just leave them on permanently but they bother me when reading text in that area -same with the power symbol on the other side. The back is going to stay on under the case even. It keeps fine silica grit from dulling the glass by putting micro-scratches into it. And you just KNOW it'll get in there sooner or later. I don't suppose it is going to hold up long with a bumper case but under the Rearth Ringke case it'll be just fine.
I see that Spigen claims they have fixed the proximity sensor issue with a new cut-out. I'm going to wait for a few positive reviews on Amazon saying it actually is fixed before even THINKING of taking a chance one.
I kept it on for 2 weeks while waiting for my tpu case + screen protector, tpu case showed up sans screen protector so I went without. All I can say is thank you generic chinese shipper for being forgetful, the screen is RIDICULOUSLY smooth, far smoother than ANY other phone I've owned, on the N4 and has to have an oleophobic coating because I haven't had to wipe grime off the phone once.
So I say go without, I can't imagine anybody making a plastic screen protector as smooth as naked and now I can't go back.
The way I look at it I can use a screen protector for the first year I own the phone. Then when all the new phones are coming out that are better and faster and I start to wish I had a newer phone I can pull it off and go naked. Then I'll fall in love with the phone all over again and it'll be new and virginal still and better than before with that smooth and slick screen.
Did that come off as too creepy?

I put a black s line TPU case on it but so far have kept the original film on...just took it out for it's virgin trip into world... + and - by power are annoying but can survive...the sad thing is I already have some cheap screen protector's but with the issues and how bad I suck at applying them I've held off.

I did the same thing with my G2x in October.

*ATT S4 demo unit, bunch of micro scratches

I went an ATT store to get a new SIM card and I had a look at the white s4 they had on display. The unit was next to bright light source and it was super sunny outside. I reflected light into screen and there were quite a few micro scratches on the screen. Wiped it several times and the scratches didnt move or fade the slightest bit. Not surprised. So the same story goes for Gorilla Glass 3, the glass is strong, the oleophobic coating will micro scratch. You see a scratch test videos on youtube for every new phone release showing how it doesnt get scratched....dont believe the hype.....that coating can get scratched. Get a screen protector if you are OCD about the screen. Sorry for the PSA....but I know a "oh no, my month old S4 is scratched" will come soon.
Oh i know this would happen lol. I'm ordering a screen protector this weekend. If its glass, it will scratch, there is no way around it.

I go through this cycle when I first get a device where I buy screen protectors and cases like a madman (eventually settling on one case and removing the SP), but I refuse to dump cash into screen protectors again. I won't put those garbage plastic protectors ones on my phone; they degrade the quality and experience severely. Plus, what if I have a warranty issue and have a glass protector installed. There goes $50 ($35 + replacement of $15) and that is assuming I don't mess up the install.
I'm attempting to go easy on this one, folks.

Micro scratches come even if you go easy. I had a GS2 that got scratched on day 2 from the studs on the sides of my jeans pocket! My BB playbook.....yup im a one of those suckers.....got scratched from a wipe with a microfiber cloth ( probably had sand on it). I like to just be able to wipe my phone on my shirt without caring whats on it and put throw it in my pocket. Im willing to sacrifice some screen smoothness/more glare for that. Ive always had good results with Spigen ultra crystal protectors and ghost armor. Very little image degradation.

Maybe I'm one of the few and proud smartphone owners who never get scratches on the screen, better yet I have never even dropped a smartphone (4 years & running)... No case & SP for me, I don't need it (or want it). As for my friends & family... they need cases built like a tank.
My phones are always naked.. No case, no screen protectors and no problems..
Maybe I am just lucky..

the thing is these scratches can only be seen in super bright light and in direct sunlight and only in certain angles...that's why they are called microscratches
every phone developes them after some use.....it's just a matter of if you notice them or not

I agree. But I always buy a minimalistic case at first. Usually it's TPU. Something cheap but thin. Then I'll free it once in a while. The screen for this phone is $335. A $6 case was an easy decision

I was in Best Buy today looking for a case and noticed the micro scratches on another S4 so I bought a screen protector. I almost bought the S View case but wasn't impressed with the amount of protection. I also thought they would have made the cover magnetic so that it wouldn't just blow open on the way to the ground. Ended up buying a bulkier case than I like. Last year I dropped my GS3 on the second day I owned it and chunked the corner of phone. I find that with new phones you tend to drop more because you are always holding it versus it being in your pocket after you are bored/used to it.
I'm pretty bad about noticing any type of scratch on my screen. I have insurance on my phone, with a case and screen protector (Zagg HD) at all times.
People abuse demo units like crazy. I witnessed a guy purposefully scratching at the screen with his keys when no employees were looking to see if it scratched easily

Otterbox defender users question

Have you noticed the buttons are hard to press and when you do press your case makes crackling sounds? I can also push down or move my case around the sides etc. and it makes a lot of sound like it has movement and play and seems flimsy...

I don't have any of those issues with my defender and my case is pretty much on there good. It's only a pain when I have to take it off.
I returned mine for that exact reason. One side, I think it was the power button side didn't completely close. All of the clips were secured and the case itself was brand new but the two halves of the case would not sit flush against each other along the seam around the power button area. It caused the case to creak and drove me nuts. Good thing the commuter is so solid and simple.
I bought one and later returned it.
Compared to otterbox ~2-3 years ago, their current line of cases feel cheap and plasticy.
What would you do?
I have the navy blue/grey case. seems great so far. just one thing...i already had a screen protector from the commuter installed. does the defenders built in screen protector stick to the screen and not pop up or feel like a button is being pressed when you touch the screen? should i leave the other screen protector on? or should i remove one or the other?

As far as I've experienced, the screen protector on the S4 defender doesn't pop up or stick to the screen; it more like sits flush against the screen. I don't currently have another screen protector on this phone yet but I may end up popping out the built in screen protector if it doesn't fit well with the one I'm planning on buying (a spigen glas.t nano slim).

1) If your defender case doesn't sit properly, it's probably defective and needs to be returned. I've owned several defender cases and none of them have had this "creaking sound" No shifting of the phone within the case.
2) Sand and dirt particles can get in between that screen protector and your screen, so you can get scratches / micro abrasions if you don't have a second screen protector. I suggest you have a cheap one installed. Shouldn't affect use.
3) I would not remove the screen protector if you are using a cheapo screen protector, if you are using some military non piercing one, then you can remove it.
Thanks for the input. Ill keep the commuter screen protector under the defenders. otterbox should have built a home button cover into the case that way no dust can get in where the home button is.

Yeah, I think they have the tech to seal it better as they have the armor variant. The problem is that there is potential entry at button and at the top where the front camera and speaker sits also.

True. But I think the top is sealed pretty tight and more flush with the phone than what the part of the screen protector around the home button is..
IMO, the Defender series for the S4 is garbage! Noisy, buttons hard to push. Returned it today and replaced it with a Commuter series and Ghost Armor screen protector.

[Q] Two Spigen Neo Hybrid Case questions

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2267412
I want that case but I have 2 concerns!
1. Should I go without a screen protector?
Comment: I don't like screen protectors cause they ALWAYS have air bubbles then that's money down the drain cause they annoy me.
2. I heard the charger port opening is small and breaks easily, also spigen is bad about replacing the border. Opinion/experience?
Comment: I understand the charger port being small for it's "slim" design but I want everybody's opinions on these two issues! Any criticism is constructive in my book!

My neo hybrid Chinese knock off broke too, but I have the original for about 3 months and I'm well happy.
about the screen protector, the cheap ones indeed leave air bubbles and are crap, but I've been using the better ones on my Galaxy Nexus and now on S4 and they are really good and they don't leave greasy finger stains on the screen as much as when you don't have one on.
try this one for starters... not expensive but really good, I'm using one right now

I've had the Spigen Neo Hybrid since August and I have no regrets, a little chip in the plastic frame from what be an otherwise very unfortunate drop. Sorry to hear others are having issues with theirs, and I think they updated the design to make it less prone to breaking.

I hate screen protectors too but they are absolutely necessary to preserve the longevity of the phone. I bought the tempered glass screen protector from Spigen Glas.TR SLIM. If it wasn't for the rounded lip around the protector you'd never think it wasn't the actual glass of the touch screen. It was the best 35 dollars I ever spent.
I have had the original Neo sine the phone came out and it is still in greta condition. I would definitely get a screen protector. I would recommend the Spigen crystal series, it is hardly even noticeable.
DO get a screen protector. I know this phone has a tough glass front, but better to be safe than sorry right? I have a Spigen crystal clears which I picked up for like $4 on amazon (it is a genuine product) and its a great screen protector.
DON'T get the hybrid, my frame broke near the USB port, the back warped and pulled away from the phone, Spigen only has a 90 warranty and ONLY if you buy it from them.

Screen protectors are not ABSOLUTELY neccessary. It really depends on how you care for the phone.
I've never used screen protectors. I keep my phone in my front pockey, glass facing in, and the only other thing I ever keep in that pocket is money (which is made of cloth, so it's not going to hurt the phone)
I've never had a single scratch.
If I were to drop the phone or slam it into something, a screen protector isn't going to help anyway.
Now if you keep your phone in a pocket with keys, or a purse with everything else that goes into a purse, or anything like that, that's a different story. But even then a screen protector isn't going to stop your phone from getting messed up eventually. It's goign to wear out much quicker than projected.
I have the ultra thin glass screen protector -> http://www.spigen.com/brands/samsun...-glas-t-nano-slim-premium-tempered-glass.html
Cases still fit and it looks great and feels better than that.
Quick question guys, if the hybrid breaks easy recommend another case that looks just as good if you don't mind!
another question, cant he tempered glass get air bubbles and can you take it off, also do all the sensors work flawlessly?
1.) Currently using a tempered glass screen protector on mine (Which is alil bit thicker) makes the "Lip protection" non-existent. So I'd get some sort of screen protector because that lip is pretty minimal.
2.) Had that concern for myself before I bought mine, truth is..if you use the OEM Sammy cable you'd be fine. Also to put on and off the case correctly lol.
BTW: Had mine since July and its still going other than a few lil chips on the frame..

Ultra Thin Air for like 10$ or the Slim Armor (Be careful with the white version though, mine is starting to fade in to yellow in certain areas )
Any screen protector / Tempered glass can get air bubbles if theres dust..But for some its normal to have bubbles as they go away within like 12hours. Tempered glass are removable annnnnd all the sensors work great with mine.
I've been using the Neo Hybrid for about two months now. It fits good and snug and shows no signs of wear. The plastic bumper is a little thin around the charging port but treat it well and you'll be OK. Plus, the button extenders on the sides feel really good and "clicky", instead of mushy as some of the rubber ones do.
As far as screen protection goes, I've always used the Zagg Invisible Shield but when I bought the S4 the sales guy threw in the Bulletproof protector for free. He even applied it for me, and I wanted to shake his hand afterward. Perfect positioning, no bubbles (I mean absolutely none), and he did it in about three tenths of a second.

I've never used a screen protector on ANY of my phones, never had an issue, so I don't believe in them. as far as the Neo Hybrid breaking near the charger port, I don't get how so many people break them, I remove my case once a day to switch batteries and I've never had an issue, maybe take a little care when removing the case

I use a glass screen protector. Maintains the glassy feel without sacrificing screen security. The neo hybrid is overhyped in my opinion. I bought it and the main thing that I did not like is how easy it was to press the power button. Without the case, the power button rarely got pressed in my pocket, but with the case on, any light tap on would push it and turn my screen on.

Using the LG V30 without a screen protector.

Anyone out there using the LG V30 without a screen protector? I've gone through two of them already. Neither has yielded a good result. The latest has the edge curving to it, but the glue is only applied at the sides and bottom. The top of the phone is open. As a result, I get tons of lint and dust between the screen protector and the screen itself. And off course, since there is no direct contact throughout the middle of the screen, touch response and sensitivity is horrific.
For this reason, I'm considering ditching the screen protector altogether, but I'm really worried about scratching this screen. Gorilla 5 has its shortcomings in this area. What's the experience of other LG V30 owners been?
Got mine in december and I applied the same kind of glass screen protector right away, with glue only on the sides. And of course, lint and touch sensitivity problems just like you... I got quickly fed up, after a couple of weeks I ditched the screen protector an got a nice case (VRS Design -https://www.amazon.com/Vrs-Design-VRSV30HPSSS-Shield-Silver/dp/B0768ZVXGS). No scratches whatsoever til this day. The phone fell once on concrete from about four feet on the corner/screen, no damage at all thanks to the case - I guess.
My 2 cents : forget about the glass protector, get a nice case with significant lip around the screen and enjoy how smooth the naked screen is.

Agreed. Just don't put it in your pocket with your keys.

I've had the phone since the end of December with no screen protector, and only a cheapo clear case that the retailer threw in when I bought it. I am a little rough in my devices as I work outdoors and the device is in and out of my pockets all day. It occasionally gets dropped or knocked out of the car mount. Not a blemish on it.

This is the first smartphone I have not put a screen protector on. I did make sure the case has a lip (A Ringke Fusion).
So far, so good.
I never use screen protectors.

Tried 3 different screen protector (ringke, ****ke and and other crap), never worked. So I am using it in case or many times in NUDE form because it has some beautiful curves, this phone
Same here, tried 4 different screen protectors then gave up and went nude. Best decision ever. I've had glass screen protectors on all my phone since they first came on the market. First time going without one.
Minor scratches will happen but usability, clearity and feel is SO much better that its worth it.
The only thing that bums me out is that the camera glass scratches easily. Heard its easy to replace but its stupid that its not sapphire glass.
I dont even use a case. Only have a black slickwraps skin on the back because i dont like the silver color. (Only silver and blue were available in my country)
I bought and use the skinomi matte screen protector and it works really well... In fact I got the same protector for the Note 8 as well.
I got a scratch on the first day that I got the phone, I don't know how or where but I did... That's why I always use screen protector, lucky for me I as able to buy a full glue when they were still available if I accidentally break it I don't know what will I do with my life.
I'm kind of different from others here.
Day 1 (August I think), I skipped the glass protector because I read from others on XDA that nothing was fitting right or didnt cover the edges of the screen. I put a plastic-like traditional protector on instead. It's been ok except for lots of grease and smudge buildup. I do have some scratches on the protector, but I wonder if they even would be noticeable if I hadn't had the screen protector on. The reason why is because of the plastic/rubbery texture of the screen protector. I feel like scratches would show up MORE on this protector vs the naked Gorilla Glass.
I'm really considering taking the protector off, but a little hesitant. Lol
I'm currently using it without the screen protector.
I've tried putting a plastic screen protector (wet install), and I've noticed it's soft almost like rubber, and also kind of sticky. After waiting for 3-4 days it remained too soft, so I just peeled it off. I haven't even tried any glass protectors after reading all of the reviews.
I mean, I would love if someone could suggest something that works well, and is $10-15 tops.
There is a whole thread dedicated to it, but the final conclusion is that nothing works except the whitestone dome which is nearly $50.

Yep I read that, but that's still a bit too expensive and too much work.
I think LG designed the curved edges to discourage users put a screen protector on it. LOL. I have been using it with no screen protector, but I have put it in a clear TPU that has lips. I dropped my phones a few times, sometimes face down, and luckily no scratches so far.

That is important, to have the lip protection on a case.

This my opinion if you don't care about resale value then go naked. Me I personally care about the resale value so I put a case and screen protector since I switch phones yearly sometimes less so I try to get as much money back as I can for the new phone or else I would go naked.

I care about resale value, and I definitely see the need for a case (especially with raised lips) -- but not a screen protector that makes the display less responsive. A friend and his wife just got these phones, wouldn't listen to me, PAID for screen protectors at T-Mobile. Within 3 days they ripped them off.
Just don't put the phone on your pocket with keys and coins.

Keys and coins don't scratch screens (there are dozens of Youtube videos that prove this), but a grain of sand will.
I never use screen protectors, and have never had any issues, but somewhere, somehow the v30 picked up a light scratch on the screen (but not from keys or coins).

That's because there could be particles of dust/sand/rocks in your pocket which could scratch the glass. I always baby my phones, yet I've picked up a couple of scratches.
