Uh-oh... Heimdall can't upload kernel... Bricked??? - Captivate General

I've softbricked my phone a few times, but always been able to recover using Heimdall. Now, my luck seems to have run out. Heimdall says:
"Uploading KERNEL
KERNEL UPLOAD FAILED
Ending session..."
Uhm.... Uh-oh??
This is what got me here. I was running SlimICS and tried to flash SlimJB. I didn't follow instructions and that resulted in a softbrick. Used Heimdall to get back to stock. Flashed CM9, tried SlimJB again and softbricked again. Heimdall'd back to stock, flashed CM9, re-downloaded SlimJB thinking I had a bad download, and tried it again. Softbrick again. Heimdall'd back to stock and decided to just go back to SlimICS. The SlimICS instructions said if coming from Froyo or GB to install any ICS kernel with either Odin or CWM. I used CWM to flash the Devil ICS Kernel. That softbricked. Tried Heimdall again and that's where I'm at.
I hadn't been nervous through all of this, but I am now. Did I permanently brick the phone? What can I do at this point???

Ok, I'm breathing a sigh of relief now. I pulled the battery for a few minutes while I rebooted the computer. I gave it another go, and it was successful. *whew*
Sorry for the spazzing out there.

Just letting you know that all that flashing to stock is totally unnecessary. You can simply grab a Devil or Semaphore kernel .tar and flash the zImage with Heimdall instead of going all the way back to stock.

[Q] Will there be an Odin or Heimdall version for KG6?

I tried installing one of the CWM versions of KG6 yesterday, and I wound up with the bootlooping problem. That was very irritating and it took me hours to get my phone back to KD1 to solve the problem. (Heimdall KC1, panic from having a whitescreen, run Heimdall again, then Odin KD1.) Fortunately I didn't lose anything and I'm back to where I started. I saw KG6 briefly, and I would love to have it on my phone, but I don't think CWM is going to work for my inexperience.
Is there any chance that we can get a KG6 ROM for Odin or Heimdall so that I can have 2.3.4 without the bootlooping issue? (I went through the above listed recovery process 3 times yesterday, and I would prefer not to have to go through that again.)

[Q] Unsure how to flash kernal from boot screen?

I took my phone from stock, unrooted, flashed new kernal, and then put on a new ROM, and everything worked fine.
I needed to send my phone back under warranty (bluetooth hardware isn't functioning), so I tried to flash the backup of my kernal in hopes of walking it back to stock. When my phone rebooted I'm in the boot screen and unable to re-boot.
If I download the original stock ROM such as http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1183413 will I be able to flash it from this boot screen? It wouldn't let me install the new ROM I had in my root, probably because it wasn't the correct kernal.
After that, could I use this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1333423 Back-To-Stock Heimdall One-Click to take my phone back to true stuck condition?
Sorry for the new questions. I've searched the forum, just not sure which option to chose and don't want to brick a phone.
Thanks,
-Rob
That one you pointed out for ODIN is not a stock ROM; it was a leaked version. I'm not sure what screen you're stuck on, though. Can you get the phone into download mode? If so, go with the Fully Back-To-Stock UVKJ6. That puts the phone at stock 2.3.6 (KJ6) and you should be fine.

[Q] Infuse 4g - Broken CWM - ICS 4.0.4 Infinitum Rom

Hello, I am a long-time viewer of xda but a new member, this is my first post.
(and yes, i looked for a similar theard. i could not find one.)
So, onto the problem.
I flashed Infinitum 1.1.1 to my Infuse using cwm recovery. I noticed problems right off the bat when after i had installed the zip, i rebooted into recovery then it got stuck on the samsung logo and i had to pull the battery (a normal event when flashing this rom) So when i pulled the battery and booted into recovery to try again, the cwm recovery was terribly screwed up. The top half of the screen was pixelated, and the navigation menu was off center. I was still able to use cwm to flash the rom successfully, But cwm remains srewed up.
So i tried to reflash cwm recovery using rom manager. but when i rebooted i was stuck in a recovery boot-loop that i had to get out of using odin.
I then flashed the rom again using the same procedure suggested by its developer, and it worked, but cwm is still acting as it was before. (the pixelated top half of the screen and the off center navigation menu. )
So can i get some help? i thought about removing cwm the using some other recovery. I also heard that cwm wont work on ics, but im unsure what it is.
Thanks in advance.
You don't have Gingerbread bootloaders. That's why recovery looks the way it does.
You need to Odin or Heimdall back to Gingerbread stock (I find Heimdall much easier for this) and then flash Entropy's DD kernel to get back into red recovery to flash Infinitum.

Yeah, ICS recovery doesn't play nice with Froyo bootloaders.
AFAIK, there is no way to get Gingerbread bootloaders without reverting to stock. With Heimdall it's an incredibly simple, and quick process. I just had to do it myself a couple nights ago

Yup, it'll work just fine
Just follow all the instructions for Heimdall to a T (there aren't many) and everything will be fine
Yeah...heimdal is the best way to get bootloaders...odin doesnt always do it and no custom rom includes them that i am aware of...
I had written detailed instructions for another person...ill try and find them and paste it here...
Also-dont use rom manager, that thing is known to cause bricks/bootloops so using it is asking for bad ju-ju lol

Have you tried flashing boot loaders?
Here is how to do it...
1) Download uclb3 heimdal by qckster
2) open the program
3) put phone in download mode
4) click flash (leave program open when finished DO NOT CLOSE)
5) after it finishes and your phone reboots, put the phone back in download mode and reconnect to PC
6) click flash bootloader on the heimdal program you left running
7) flash, let reboot and your problems should be gone
Download mode instructions
1) pull battery
2) put battery back in
3) hold volume up + down
4) connect phone to PC with USB cable *don't let go of volume*
Just because you were on gingerbread previously does nit mean you have ginger bread boot loaders...I had ginger bread since the first leaks and did not have boot loaders until a month or two ago when I flashed them using those steps above...
Good luck!

Thank you for posting the guide. I literally just got done flashing GB bootloaders to my Infuse because of the rainbow Recovery when I'm on ICS. I used Odin though and used GB loader that a member posted in the AOKP Uniporn thread. I was scared but there really isn't anything to be afraid of. I tried using Heimdall but dang that was nerve racking because I was trying to use it on Mac and it wouldn't let me do the flash.

Good deal, glad you got it sorted out. And to clear up some confusion that is in this thread: you don't have to flash an entire Gingerbread rom to get the bootloaders. We all have our preferred ways of doing it, but you CAN flash just the bootloaders.
Here is both a Heimdall and an Odin way to get JUST the bootloaders. That's all that is necessary for someone who has rainbow distortion issues on an ICS or Gingerbread rom.:
See the third post (HERE) in Entropy512's Unofficial CM9 thread for instructions on how to flash just the bootloaders using the Heimdall command line. Or, see the answer to question 1.) in the FAQ of the rooted UCLB3 Odin thread which is HERE.

Heimdall is one way to get the bootloaders, and here's how I did it.:
heimdall flash --primary-boot boot.bin --secondary-boot Sbl.bin
The second part of your statement isn't true. Odin doesn't do it only when the user can't figure out how to use Odin.
thank you everyone.
Being a creature of habit i ended up flashing to rom and bootloaders using odin. that did indeed fix CWM right up.
GB loader

CWM uninstalled itself?

Hey guys,
I'm trying to install CM9 on my Galaxy S 4G, I was running stock FROYO 2.2.1, and I went into CWM 3.2.0.0 did a factory reset, however now CWM is gone, any way to get it back?
ROM Manager?
don't use rom manager, it doesn't work on our phone. do you have any root access at all? and are you still on froyo?
hey man maybe you could help me out. I screwed myself a little here.
I was on Froyo 2.2.1, tried installing CM9 right away and now I can't boot into CWM, or my actual phone. Only Download Mode works.
however Heimdall or Kies doesn't recognize the phone....Windows does, but the programs don't. What do I do? Anything i can flash with ODIN or anything to bring it back to life?
Here you go:

Read the first two posts and you will be able to fix your phone then flash CM9.

Back to stock UCLB3..now what?

So, I decided to root my Infuse..and load 4.x.x . Rooting was no problem. Following the order I next went to ICS...got the boot logo freeze, but also got the Froyo boot loader rainbow crap... So, I used Heimdall One-click and went back to UCLB3 stock...with out Root..wth?
I also lost USB connection when booted...in download mode the device is discovered....but it recently dawned on me Debugging was turned off. oops. hope that is the ONLY problem.
So, how do I flash the UCLB3 with CW and Root (ENTROPY512's 4.4.2012 kernel?)...use the Odin Tool or can I use the Heimdall One-Click tool? I'm thinking the Heimdall is a No.
Thanks. my other Android devices were so much easier to root and flash custom to. LOL
Just ignore this dribble....I see that Heimdall has a front end for flashing....will be back if I F it up a bit later.
ok then, a complete wiping of all Samsung drivers reboot and re-install of the non-kies (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1655286 and Odin was able to connect to my phone in Download mode.
Flashed the new rom (I997UCLB3-CWM-root-deodex-extras.rar), already had GB boot loader so I "should" be good to go for ICS and then JB and beyond.
OK, Now I'm not finding any more information. I've installed ICS via Entropy's CM9 and have ICS running. When I go to install a JB rom I get 'An incompatible partition layout' error. forcing the issue leaves me stuck at the splash screen. End up having to go all the way back to stock UCLB3 because I end up with a ton of mount errors.
Am I missing a step...the same step 3 times??
Thanks.
Edit.....never mind...tried a different 4.3 rom...got same partition error..did it anyway, installed correct gapps...up and running. *whew*

btw..re: heimdall one click...the insecure kernel is on the second post of the thread. if you read the OP..the original intent is to return to complete stock
Thanks qkster...i knew there was a Heimdall one-click that already had cwm and root, but in my haste (in between functions at work) I couldn't find it. I'll have to look again, although I have 4.3 running now, so prob will never (never say never, right?) need to go all the way back the the stock stone age.

ah yes, I remember that post in my headless chicken state.
Is it my imagination, or did 4.3 drop the audio (music player) from both front and back speakers to just back speaker? Could have sworn pandora in ICS (and 2.3.6) had sound coming from both speakers....
