[Q] Unsure how to flash kernal from boot screen? - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

I took my phone from stock, unrooted, flashed new kernal, and then put on a new ROM, and everything worked fine.
I needed to send my phone back under warranty (bluetooth hardware isn't functioning), so I tried to flash the backup of my kernal in hopes of walking it back to stock. When my phone rebooted I'm in the boot screen and unable to re-boot.
If I download the original stock ROM such as http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1183413 will I be able to flash it from this boot screen? It wouldn't let me install the new ROM I had in my root, probably because it wasn't the correct kernal.
After that, could I use this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1333423 Back-To-Stock Heimdall One-Click to take my phone back to true stuck condition?
Sorry for the new questions. I've searched the forum, just not sure which option to chose and don't want to brick a phone.
Thanks,
-Rob

That one you pointed out for ODIN is not a stock ROM; it was a leaked version. I'm not sure what screen you're stuck on, though. Can you get the phone into download mode? If so, go with the Fully Back-To-Stock UVKJ6. That puts the phone at stock 2.3.6 (KJ6) and you should be fine.

You aren't screwed. What were you on before you flashed and what are you trying to flash?

Were you on Stock Froyo or Stock GB?
99% sure GB. Its my girlfriends phone, she got it 1 month ago. pretty sure it was all updated.

Well you need to know . If you were on Froyo - you were flashing a GB kernel.
Since you don't know - you need to take the route of flashing GB with Bootloaders to be safe.
Go to this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1358498
Select and download:
Download SMS KJ6 (beta2d) Kernel Stock Rom with Bootloaders
Let me know when you have it and I can help you proceed.
10min left on the download. Thx for the help I'll buy you a few beers if we can pull this off

You will pull this off no problem. I have helped many people through this.
While you are waiting for the download - go ahead and do step one in that thead:
"Get the latest version of Java 1.6 from this link."
** Just so you understand - Froyo and GB have different bootloaders. If you were on Froyo and trying to flash GB without bootloaders - that is a problem. That is why - to be safe - you are downloading KJ6 WITH BOOTLOADERS so we know you will be good to go afterwards.
Java is all good and SMS KJ6 (beta2d) Kernel Stock Rom with Bootloaders is done downloading

Mike - I can do GChat if you need me to. However first - first learning purposes - read through this thread to get a better understanding of what you are about to do. Many people have commented that it is a step by step guide in a sense.

I have read thru the guides how i begin to flash SMS KJ6 (beta2d) Kernel Stock Rom with Bootloaders?
I cant use superoneclick because the phone is looping.

I didn't mean the guide - Fresh out of box - I meant the actual thread '[Q] Help me with DL for galaxy s4g battery life'. She flashed the same thing you are about to flash. Did you read that thread?
If so, let me know and we can get started.
And no - SuperOneClick is only for rooting. You are about to flash a Kernel, ROM and bootloaders to get your phone going.
OK i have read your [Q] Help me with DL for galaxy s4g battery life thread.
I have flashed ROMS before on my G1, G2, and my SGS2. I am familiar with download mode. I just made a dumb mistake.

I ADVISE USING A USB PORT YOU HAVE NOT PLUGGED YOUR PHONE INTO YET FOR THIS!
- Get your phone in Download Mode
How to get into download mode:
Take your microUSB cable and plug it into the computer, but not the phone (yet).
Take out the battery from the phone.
Put the battery back into the phone.
Put the back cover back onto the phone, make sure it's snug so the battery doesn't fall out.
Hold vol + and -, keep holding them.
Plug the USB cable into the phone.
You should now be in download mode and should see a picture of a yellow triangle with Andy and a shovel in the middle.
- Run the Heimdall One-Click you downloaded using the directions in that thread:
Run: 'java -jar SMS-KJ6-beta2d_Stock-Rom_with_Bootloaders-One-Click.jar'
Its idle and looks like this http://dl.dropbox.com/u/9655144/20120304_003443.jpg

That is your bootloader issue. What have you done so far?
If you ran One-Click once - and got that - your were previously on Froyo. Pull the battery, go into download mode, and flash again - this time checking 'Flash bootloaders'.
Step 4: Run "flash" once. Let the phone reboot itself. Don't touch the phone until it boots into android. If it works and you want to flash bootloaders
- Put your phone into "Download Mode" again:
- Check the "Flash Bootloaders" checkbox and Run "flash" again to get bootloaders.
- Again, let it reboot fully into android.
I ran SMS-KJ6-beta2d_Stock-Rom_with_Bootloaders-One-Click
went into download mode
Pressed flash http://dl.dropbox.com/u/9655144/hem 1click.jpg

If it is greyed out start over. If your phone is showing connected. And you installed the Heimdall SGS4G drivers, and it says:
'SMS-KJ6 (v0.0.2d) Stock-Rom with Bootloaders UVKJ6 is ready for your device.'
Click flash.
Let it run until your phone reboots. After it reboots you should boot into CWM. If not just wait a few seconds. Then pull your battery. Leave One-Click OPEN through this, put your phone in download mode, One-Click should recognize it and you should be able to check flash bootloaders. If so - flash again.

[Q] cannot install ANY rom or restore! help please!

So I tried to flash two of the new Roms in the dev section and now I cant boot anything at all nor can I restore my old Rom through recovery. I get to the MD5 checking then it says MD5 mismatch and doesn't let me restore. Anyone have any ideas? My phone wont boot....
After the massive googling that took place after this post I decided to just ODIN this sucker back to stock. Stock restored, root added, and CWM working again in under 10 minutes. Gonna make another backup and try reflashing again
DarkKnight worked fine for me except for some known bugs... i could'nt get the Noble Series 8.0 or 8.1 to boot at all though weird just stay at the blaze 4g splash screen

Its the same procedure you use to root your device. Put the phone in download mode and plug in usb cable. But instead of selecting blaze-root-kernel.tar (the rooted kernel you used), you'll instead select SGH-T769-UVLB7-hitsquad.tar. I have not needed to restore my device yet, so I have no experience. Just knowledge from reading. So don't take me for granted!
Sleeps17 said:
Just restore back to stock firmware using Odin. You need to download a file called SGH-T769-UVLB7-hitsquad.tar and blaze.pit, load those up in Odin and unselect all options except Reboot. And carefully make sure Repartition is unchecked as well.

I'm sure it wasnt the roms (I tried flashing both) that caused it because I couldn't restore my backups either, though I still don't know what happened. Safe to say the restore to stock was very fast, and now I have no worries if I soft brick again.

[Q] Clockworkmod Recovery updated, can't enter recovery mode

Hi, I've searched and can't find an answer. I've managed to root my Infuse and got Infinitum rom installed. It was working great until just this evening when Clockworkmod updated (sorry, I can't find the version number). It went into a boot loop. It took me a bit, but I managed to get it out of the boot loop and back to stock, now it's rooted again with Infinitum running again.
I'm trying to get back to a recovery point that I do have on the phone, but I can't get the phone to boot to recovery no matter what I do. When I try using the vol and power buttons combination or from ROM manager I get the same thing. It goes past the stock Samsung logo into the Galaxy S/Cyanogen(mod) logo, but freezes there.
I can, of course, take the loss of my setup and redo everything manually. I would really prefer to be able to get that backup back. I'm also concerned should I ever need to get into recovery mode for any other reason. My guess is that I need to downgrade the CWM version, but I haven't been able to find how to do it.
Can anyone give me any help? Please let me know if there's info that I can give that would be useful...I'm noobie, I know!

There are many layers to your questions.
You may need to read a bit more to get a better understanding.
Here is two points I can offer that may be helpful.
1. Don't use ROM Manager for the Infuse.
2. To downgrade a cwm version, you will need to flash a GB or FROYO kernel in download mode via heimdall or odin. You can also use any one of the return to stock that is flashed in download mode also.
If you think you lost recovery, try flashing the kernel for the rom you were running in cwm, if you can get back into cwm again.

I believe you about the ROM Manager. Too late, unfortunately. I'll take it off.
I had the phone back to stock with Odin. I went through all of the steps that I went through to first root it and install Infinitum. I had red cwm at the time. I just can't seem to get into it now. I don't think I lost it, I'm just unsure of how to get to it, since it freezes at the cm startup. I can just power off from there after I give up waiting, and it will boot to ICS normally when I power it on normally. I have Titanium Backup Pro, and it can access the nandroid backup that I have to get the apps and data. I was just hoping to recover the whole setup. I had an issue last weekend (oops to me) when I tried to install a JB rom where it went into a boot loop. I recovered everything after backtracking like I did tonight, and was hoping to be able to do the same. Is there any hope, do you think, if I go back and return to stock and start over from the beginning again? If not, I'll just suffer and redo the whole thing.
By the way, I really appreciate you answering. I've been lurking for a few weeks, and realize that you know a LOT about these phones.

Okay, so next question. I've been reading and searching and reading some more. I can get the phone back to stock and work up again, but I still reach a point where it will freeze on the Samsung/CM startup screen. In reading the Infinitum Project thread, I found this (yes, it's pretty easy to find):
"Recovery/CWM messed up?
Here is how to fix it...
1) Download uclb3 heimdal by qkster
2) open the program
3) put phone in download mode
4) click flash (leave program open when finished DO NOT CLOSE)
5) after it finishes and your phone reboots, put the phone back in download mode and reconnect to PC
6) click flash bootloader on the heimdal program you left running
7) flash, let reboot and your recovery problems should be gone"
I used that to get back to stock before...doesn't that remove the root? Do I have to go through all that, then the bootloaders, and then go back and root all over again to get back to a working CWM? I'm sorry to ask so many questions, but it seems that I've done most of this already, though I admit to not doing the flash for the bootloader. I'm just unclear since it says "your recovery problems should be gone" at the end of that, like I have to do nothing more.
That does remove root access. However, root isn't really necessary, at least for the stock ROM, if you have no intentions of staying stock. The ROM .zips you'll subsequently flash are pre-rooted. After you Heimdall back to stock, and flash it again with "flash bootloaders" selected, then use Heimdall to flash this kernel:
http://d-h.st/6KA
That'll flash both a new kernel and CWM Red recovery. It'll take a few minutes to boot up the first time, as it's installing the lagfix. Once it boots up, just shut it down and boot back up in recovery. From there, you can do whatever you need to do.

As Apex pointed out, each time we bring the phone back to stock, we lose root access and all the previous setup. It's a fact of flashing.
No big deal though, rooting is easy and is not really needed. What is needed is the insecure kernel with cwm. The link Apex gave you is the same as the posted kernel in post #2 of the thread. That kernel will give you the cwm. Review that thread if you haven't yet.
Flash the heimdall uclb3 repartition package. Immediately after it successfully boot your phone, don't close the program. check the bootloader box and put the phone back into dl mode and flash it again to get your gb bootloaders...
then flash the kernel.

Thanks guys
It's been a crazy busy week and I just didn't have time to deal with the phone. I've been dealing with stock gingerbread. It's getting kind of annoying, though, it seems less stable than the custom ICS that I had on it before. Not sure when I'm going to have time to play with it again and try to get it to where I want it. I think I'm going to try to totally wipe all of the old stuff out of the memory before I do it again, though. There's something that wasn't allowing me to do what you guys are telling me to do successfully. I'm also thinking of finding a GS2 and just selling the Infuse, not because of my confusion, but because the GS2 was what I was originally looking for anyway.
I'll try to get this one set up first, though, as it's just a matter of me being obsessive about it.
qkster, I'll look into the JB, too, lol.

Hey I am not the Infuse user... But I faced similar problem in my xperia some days back after updating the recovery.
I was also not able to enter recovery at boot time using my usual volume down way...
What the change was the new recovery checks for tap on the screen (repeatetive) instead of volume down button...
Not sure if it will work or not for you... But you can give a try...

Back to stock UCLB3..now what?

So, I decided to root my Infuse..and load 4.x.x . Rooting was no problem. Following the order I next went to ICS...got the boot logo freeze, but also got the Froyo boot loader rainbow crap... So, I used Heimdall One-click and went back to UCLB3 stock...with out Root..wth?
I also lost USB connection when booted...in download mode the device is discovered....but it recently dawned on me Debugging was turned off. oops. hope that is the ONLY problem.
So, how do I flash the UCLB3 with CW and Root (ENTROPY512's 4.4.2012 kernel?)...use the Odin Tool or can I use the Heimdall One-Click tool? I'm thinking the Heimdall is a No.
Thanks. my other Android devices were so much easier to root and flash custom to. LOL
Just ignore this dribble....I see that Heimdall has a front end for flashing....will be back if I F it up a bit later.
ok then, a complete wiping of all Samsung drivers reboot and re-install of the non-kies (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1655286 and Odin was able to connect to my phone in Download mode.
Flashed the new rom (I997UCLB3-CWM-root-deodex-extras.rar), already had GB boot loader so I "should" be good to go for ICS and then JB and beyond.
OK, Now I'm not finding any more information. I've installed ICS via Entropy's CM9 and have ICS running. When I go to install a JB rom I get 'An incompatible partition layout' error. forcing the issue leaves me stuck at the splash screen. End up having to go all the way back to stock UCLB3 because I end up with a ton of mount errors.
Am I missing a step...the same step 3 times??
Thanks.
Edit.....never mind...tried a different 4.3 rom...got same partition error..did it anyway, installed correct gapps...up and running. *whew*

I want go to froyo 2.2.1 because that what it was when i bought my phone. If there is a one-click to go to stock froyo 2.2.1. Or the files i need to get me to froyo 2.2.1 on odin.
In the sixth post is a one click kd1... download & run. Simple
What if my sgh-t959v, gingerbread 2.3.6 is rooted would the one click thing back to froyo 2.2.1 still work if my phone is rooted? So your saying i just have to download the froyo one-click and it will take my phone from gingerbread 2.3.6 to froyo 2.2.1 all by itself? Im really nooby at this please let me know.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda app-developers app
Yes, the one-click will basically install the other version on your phone. It will most likely remove root.
You will almost certainly have to backup all the data you wish to preserve with something like Titanium Backup and restore it to the phone as Android and apps don't "downgrade" very gracefully.
I think @FBis251 made a froyo oneclick.
Woops this one was on accident, look at post #9.
Hey can anyone tell me the process of using the kd1 one-click for my sgh-t959v. I heard that i have to go into dl mode and plug in my phone and open the sgh-t959v-kd1-one-click.jar and run it. And the second time i run it i should have flash bootloaders checked. And after that i should do factory reset, clear cache from the android recovery screen? After i run the jar for the first time what will my phone screen be on after the process is done? After ive ran the kd1.jar twice will it take me setting up phone phone steps. Please anyone tell me steps using the kd1-one-click.jar if i have to run it once or twice and have flash bootloaders checked. Thanks.
You should be following this guide when flashing one clicks:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21953878&postcount=2
The one click @bhundven mentioned is this one:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/teamacid/files/fb/roms/one_clicks/kd1-stock-sgh-t959v-one-click.jar
To be specific, lumin's guide will tell you how to flash a one click. You should be flashing the one click I linked you to (kd1-stock-sgh-t959v-one-click.jar) while following the instructions in that guide.
Good luck!
Im just wondering, after if i am back on froyo 2.2.1, would i be able to use Superoneclick, (version 2.2) i think to root my phone on froyo 2.2.1?

Hey FB in lumin's post he posted is one that will take you to stock KJ6 Gingerbread 2.3.6. but what about this link that you gave to me www.sourceforge.net/projects/teamacid/files/fb/roms/one_clicks/kd1-stock-sgh-t959v-one-click.jar. Will this take me back to stock Froyo 2.2.1? I'm just saying this because in lumin's post the one click he talking about is KJ6 but the link you put here is to go to froyo 2.2.1? Thanks.

That's correct, the KD1 one click I linked you to will take you to stock Froyo. Any time lumin mentions the KJ6 one click, just use the KD1 one click instead and you'll be back to Froyo in no time .
Sorry, but i have another question, I dont even know what bootloaders are. Will I need to have flash bootloaders checked the second time when i am going back to stock froyo 2.2.1? Or will i only have to flash it once with the sgh-t959v one click. Let me know. Thanks

Yes you need to flash the bootloaders. The GB bootloaders your phone has at the moment aren't compatible with Froyo, so you should follow the instructions to the letter.

Maybe I missed the answer, but will Superoneclick, (version 2.2) root an unlocked T959V running stock Froyo 2.2.1? I think I would like to root frist and remove some of the bloatware - before upgrading the firmware to GB, ICS, or higher.
Yes, it will root froyo.

Great! Thanks for the instant reply.
I think upgrading to GB from a rooted T959V running FROYO is the way I will proceed. If the root is successful, I'll try to remove some or most of the bloatware, then see how I like the phone - before moving up to GB, ICS, or another firmware upgrade.
Hey, Can someone help me fast. I'm doing the steps here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21953878&postcount=2 and my command prompt never said Installing drivers and I am in download mode but never said installing drivers and zadig didn't open on my computer. My phone is in download mode right now, what should i do? I followed all the steps correctly.
I have Odin also, but I don't know what files to put in odin, I was using the kd1-one-click to go back to stock froyo 2.2.1 and i was in command prompt but never got the (installing drivers) message and zadig didn't open. I need the the files that i can put into odin that will take my phone to froyo 2.2.1 stock. Please someone help!
I downloaded Zadig from the internet and ran it and did the steps in lumin30 post. After I clicked flash on the kd1 one-click, and on the bottom is says flash SBL after my phone finished it loaded into the android page and installed packages and show the tmobile splash screen then the samsung boot logo.(It shows the froyo 2.2.1 boot logo though because i remember how the gingerbread 2.3.6 boot logo. and then i took out usb like lumin said and put into download mode again and checked flash bootloaders and and still says flashing sbl. My phone is now with a black screen and vibrates every 10-15 seconds and my lights on the 4 buttons on the bottom are on. Please I need the files that i need to put into odin to get my phone to boot up!! All my phone does is black screen and vibrates every couple seconds. Someone please help if i can use odin to fix this.??
