How many others think SD Card slot should be added to Google's minimum hardware requirements for Android?
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
Google doesn't have minimum hardware requirements on anything about Android which is one of the reasons why its so open but fragmented.
Manufacturers didn't listen to Google anyway when they wanted to add softkeys as seen on the gnexus. GS3? Old layout, capacitive, and single physical button. HOX? New layout but capacitive.
MOTO seems to be listening but probably because Mobility was bought by Google

Regardless of the google requirements, I think all manufacturers should think that microsd is mandatory. I have never purchased a phone/camera/pda etc in the last 10 years without sd/microsd.

Hi
Personally I would like an SD slot to be available on all Android devices. I would have loved for the HTC ONE X to have an expandable memory slot as I have had a few HTC devices and always been happy with them. My upgrade is due in a few months and for me anyway that is THE only deciding factor for choosing the Galaxy SIII over the One X. Both in my opinion are very good handsets and certainly do what I would want to do with them. But was gutted to see that there was no expandable slot. Yes, I know in these days 'Cloud services' will cater for most peoples needs, but I dont know why but I have always been wary of such services. Again, yes...I know, I am probably just being paranoid but for me nothing beats a memory card slot. :good:
All the contrary

Unfortunately, this is now all the contrary. Nexus devices will never have a SD slot, and Google would like manufacturers to do the same.

Can you cite a source for that last snippet of info?
Google have, to my knowledge, never dictated hardware to manufacturers for Android.
Internal memory is only going to get bigger, with 16GB being the minimum, and then a couple of years later 32GB will be the minimum.
OTG will remove the need for the removable feature as you will be able to get card readers to plug into the phone's socket.
With 4G speeds syncing to a cloud will be quick so the security/privacy/data loss through involvement with a toilet risks will be out weighed, or you'll sync to your home PC (something I'd much prefer) rather than through a 3rd party.
While it would be cool, I do not think google would ever do it.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
The day Google post a minimum system requirements for android phones, that day the user experience will be always fine! :highfive:
I think google will recommend manufacturers not to have ad card slot. Anyway IMO .. OTG is good enough

Agree with it ... Until now google doesn't have minimum hardware requirements
If you look at the Google nexus devices and look at the Google blog they want to remove SD card slots and deal only with internal and cloud based storage.

When the galaxy nexus came out there was reasons given for why they wanted to move away from sd. If anything google would be more likely to specify no sd slot.

If they completely remove micro SD card, then these phones shouldn't be called "smartphones", but "mediaphones". Even "dumbphones" have micro SD card slots, why shouldn't smart phones?

What's more surprising is that you didn't do your homework before you bought the phone.
You're probably one of the only one's with this phone who has a problem with the lack of mem slot. The other 99.9% of us were fully aware of this, and didn't care, as I don't see how I could fill up all 16gb, given that there are cloud music services and what-not nowadays.

How does internal memory sucks?
I mean, the SD Card feature is really nice to have and silly not to include it. But it was not included because there wasn't enough room for it with NFC and all of that.
It sucks that we don't have sdcards but we can live without it. Am I saying future phones shouldnt feature it anymore? No. I think it should definitely stay. But can we live without them? Sure.
my biggest complaint about lack of sdcard is all the people who refused to get this phone due to it saying no sdcard slot is stupid they would never buy a phone that has "locked" storage... and then pull out their ipod...

It's even funnier when people criticize the phone (way back when it first came out) and was like without a sd card, you cant flash ROMs. That's what makes me laugh so hard. If they made the iNAND to be 32GB instead of 16GB I bet it would of made more consumers happy
The whole no sdcard is a misconception because they think the phone itself doesn't have storage.

Btw, I am paying $2.99 a month for 25gb on Google cloud in addition to my Dropbox account and if I want more space I can get 100gb for $10.
I can't get videos to stream from Dropbox without first marking the file as a Favorite (which then makes a local copy). So cloud storage is not a great solution. And that was using WiFi. I know Dropbox just a day ago updated their app for better streaming support but I haven't tested it yet. I hope it works better.
The storage is a 16GB Samsung NAND chip that is soldered to the board there is no way to upgrade it.

The trick is to hack the phone to make Dropbox think you have a different phone. Dropbox gives out more storage to Samsung GS3 than to the HTC One X. Look it up and you'll find the way to do it. But I agree it is a bit unethical. I'm happy with what I got from Dropbox for HTC devices.

There is a thread for this very issue. My question would be what about the Inspire do you think needs to upgraded? Faster processor, bigger screen, better camera?
For my next device, I want a faster processor, more ram, more storage, a front facing camera and a bigger screen without giving up anything that the Inspire provides. I haven't found it yet. I like the sexy heavy duty construction, this phone makes Samsungs feel like toys. The HOX has a higher end feel than the Sammies, but has no sd slot. Not interested in iOS or Windows. I have high hopes for the next round of Nexus devices but have to wait until there is more than just rumor to know if that's where I go next.
It's going to be about what you need, want and can afford. Without know more about that, I cannot make a recommendation.

I can understand that, but I've actually already filled up my 32gb gs3. Even still 16gb isn't bad and I personally don't care too much about a non removable battery. However, the dna's battery sounds relatively small for the high spec guts it has plus that 1080 lcd.
That's also not to mention how bleak the prospect of development seems. Not to bash it, but the gs3 still has some pros

Downloaded Need for Speed Most Wanted and that took a large chunk of space. already have other games that are taking up 7GB of space alone. then god forbid if i want to download some lossless songs from Spotify. thats almost 400MB an album. I can't put that on the SD card, unless i'm missing something in the way spotify saves music.

In a word, yes. All of my music is FLAC encoded; my 32GB S3 is totally full, and the 32GB MicroSD I have in it has about 3GB left, and that's just from about 50-100 albums. Honestly, I'd love a 128GB MicroSD right now... plus where I am 3G is unusable (40KB/s down D: ) and thus streaming makes absolutely no sense for me. No SD card slot makes any phone a no-buy for me.

11gb useable storage.
I just cant live with that.

Conspiracy time: why put so little storage?
Maybe to force people to use PAY cloud based storage like Drive and backup assistant.
Dont forget the data charges store and access those GB of cloud data.
Games nowdays can be over a gig and I have 6gb+ of music. Not everyone wants to use the cloud to stream music and movies. Not only does it kill your battery but if you are in a bad area for signal you are SOTL. I also always have some movies on my phone for my 3 year old when we go out to dinner it keeps her calm. I have a 32gb gs3 and a 64gb card I don't have to worry about space on my phone.

exactly what i was thinking!
I should have added this: I wish phone makers would move away from SD card slots, however, give higher internal storage options.
Like I said before, I personally have no use for large storage space because I have my laptop for that. Plus my car has a built in hard drive for music and that's really the only time I listen to music. I can see how other users fill up fast, though. 128GB GS4, anyone? Lol
