[ROM] [ERA] CM7+Nexus S 4G Modems=faster internet speeds and Update PRL/Profile - Epic 4G Android Development

This is a CM7 build I compiled from the EpicCM and CyanogenMod team's sources, but I modified the device, kernel, and vendor sources so we can use the Nexus S 4G modems, so we can have faster Internet and so we can update PRL and profile. My kernel sources are at https://github.com/xboxfanj/android_kernel_samsung_victory
You must flash this modem in Odin/Heimdall in order for Call/Text/Data to work, doesn't matter if you flash before or after you flash the ROM
http://marcusant.com/android/epic/modem.bin
Link:
http://darkierawr.com/Android/Users/xboxfanj/cm-7-20120828-UNOFFICIAL-epicmtd.zip
This build has fixed audio, voodoo color and sound, and battery life extender.
MD5:
93ba57b183e9b6a62a7240bee47876d2
Note: You must flash back to a regular Epic modem if you change ROMs to nearly any other one (besides my Sense ROMs or any other ROM that uses the Nexus modem (none at the time of this writing))
Working:
Everything that is working in the other CM7 builds (should be everything)
Thanks to the EpicCM/CyanogenMod Team for making most of the sources I based on.
Thanks to bbelos and I for patching in support for Nexus modems and PRL and profile updates.
Thanks to Darkierawr, marcusant, and eigerzoom for hosting
Anyone is welcome to build off this, but please make sure to credit me, bbelos, and the CM Team.
I plan on making CM9/10 builds with this modem and PRL/Profile update support later on.

Samsung is known to make bad modems/ril, and since Google made the one we're using, it should be better. That is why the GS3 gets worse data speeds than the EvoLTE. The hardware in that area is the same, so it means Samsung didn't do as well on that as HTC. GPS may be better too, since I changed that file to match the modem.

I love it guys knew you had it in ya!!! Now we need PA and CM10 kang to start some of this goodness since FC09 is way out dated and we need to look to maximizing our phones!! Great work keep on rocking you studs!

Nice! I was considering trying this, but my apprehension about messing up my primary device kept me at bay... I feel safer using an xboxfanj build, anyway
Can you share the md5sums in case we run into problems? I'm going to take the leap either way (with Heimdall on standby just in case), but md5sum verifications always make me feel at ease
Thanks for providing us with another awesome mod - hopefully I will be reporting success within the hour

I was wondering about the cap light disable ever since Tortel1210 said (after the latest stable official CM7 release) that it just wasn't going to happen because he'd given up on figuring it out... I was like, "But it works on the official build I'm currently using... did I miss something?" I will try to find his post in the official CM7 thread, in case I'm crossing my wires on that...
Anyway, so far, so good on my end - I can confirm the issues mentioned by darkjje, but the important thing is that my data connection is the best it has ever been (I no longer have to use wifi at my home in the boonies, lol). Can't wait for those small fixes to top off the package, but I'm pleased so far - thanks again, xboxfanj!

Ya I remember his post. I think it was along the lines of how its done it won't be merged in to the official and will have to be cherrypicked if people want it in... or something like that.

He mentioned overlaying java files - I'm not sure I understand what he meant by that... my guess is that it has to do with merging additional code into an existing java file, but I've been wrong before ::gasp!::
I trust that you can figure it out, though, and now that I've heimdalled the modem I'm committed to testing (it's a quick enough process to switch back, but not as convenient as CWM flashing - laziness wins, lol)

Question/opinions about ril's and att?

Just updated my radio and ril. I just flashed my first rom( gingerbeast) yesterday. Today I did my first radio and ril. I followed the recommended chart and updated to the latest att radio(06.06.30-M) and the recommended ril 2.2.0079hm.
My question is I noticed in several members signature and they are also running the latest radio but a lot are running the 2.2.0018G with gingerbeast? Am I missing something, have y'all getting better performance with this ril?
I do understand that all phones are different etc...just looking for opinions and personal limes.
Please post in the correct sections.

You may need to watch it a little longer than a day, just so you know. This allows for the radio changes to "settle in," and also gives some leeway to allow for any ATT/network signal inconsistencies that day that might color your evaluation of the radios performance.
Hopefully you had a somewhat good idea of how your previous radio/signal would perform in areas you frequent regularly, so you'll be better able to determine whether, over the course of several days, your signal appears more or less jumpy, stronger/weaker in those familiar areas.
Also, at least when editing the build.prop file, and perhaps when when flashing radios/RILs, as it's related, I've seen it recommended to reboot not once, but *twice*, after flashing. Apparently something needs that second reboot to "kick in."
Like I said, I'm not quite sure if the reboot twice thing necessarily applies to radios/RILs, but I do it twice, just in case.
It certainly can't hurt...
Will do, thanks for suggestion and your time. Excited to learn about these things.

ALPHA: Nyan kernel 3.X builds

Thank you bbelos for the port of kernel 3.x
This thread will contain test builds of a Nyan colonel built off of kernel 3.x. This does not currently have voodoo sound or over clock capabilities. This has a bunch of tweaks I have found and would like tested such as didle and other new things. This is based on the 3.x port by bbelos.
What does not work:
Vibration
4G WiMax
Compass
You need to put the following files on your SD card along with the kernel:
Download all files here besides zImage
Now you will need to download the test kernel. If it is named zImage.bin, rename it zImage:
6/3/12 9:49 EST: http://i.minus.com/1338785488/MLUAXU3KBgO9DEjDXcsUKA/iyU7MabwAtc4I
Flash boot_zImage_with_boot.zip in CWM or twrp and it should reboot into the kernel.
It should be mentioned the orientation sensor doesn't work either, although I'm not sure if it's just the auto-rotation feature that doesn't work or it won't even turn orientation when you want to change the orientation of your camera.
One question though: What are the benefits of the new kernel?

The screen orientation, oddly enough, is not handled by the orientation sensor. Or at least not in this case. It must be handled by the accelerometer. The orientation sensor is needed for things like compass apps, etc.

guess i missed all the "fun." pretty glad i did too. anyways, i still havent tried this kernel out. i'll try to give it a shot tonight. does it work with any ics rom or should i stick with cm while testing it now? and as far as the tweaks you mention in the OP, are they behind the scenes tweaks, or should i use a specific app to utilize them, like nstools for live OC and such on your other kernels? which i still dont really know how to use, lol. i just leave the live OC option at 100% on nstools. not sure what im sposed to use for the best performance or best battery tho. but ill go to the nyan v5 thread to ask about that stuff.

dr4stic's Experimental Build FunHouse! (CM10, CM9, m0R3?) for T769 and others, Oh My!

Hi guys,
I seem to have a need to run experimental builds. And since I turned the other thread into an official CM10 thread (stupid of me, I know), I thought I'd create this one to run experimental builds on.
What constitutes an experimental build? Well... mostly tweaks to our device profile. Turning on and off features we do or don't have on the phone. Maybe I'll try experimental AOKP or other releases, but most importantly:
I DO NOT TAKE REQUESTS!
Please don't ask for things that really should be mods and handled in the Themes and Apps section. You'll just be annoying me and cluttering the thread.
Please see the second post for misc. things I'm working on.
Also, be nice to all posters... even the [email protected] This is the Android Dev section and I'd like to see a certain level of decorum. We only get better by rising above.
AS ALWAYS, VERIFY ALL MD5 SUMS BEFORE INSTALLING.
ALSO, IF YOU FIND SERIOUS (or even minor) WEIRDNESS, PLEASE DO A FULL WIPE AND VERIFY BEFORE REPORTING!
Thanks
So, I talked to some guys, and I'm hoping the following kernel soves some of the SoD issues people have been having. Folks, PLEASE remember that you need to run this for at least a day or two without rebooting your phone on purpose. If it crashes out or reboots on it's own, that's a different story. I need this to be more of a long term test. As soon as I can confirm this works, I'll get it patched and submitted to official.
CM10 2012-11-11 Build. SoD Fix Attempt 1: boot-cm10.t769-noSoD.zip - 6.89 MB (Dirty flash OK, no need to wipe dalvik)
NOTE!!!
Sometimes I'll mention I uploaded a build. It takes about 25-30 minutes for me to upload a 160MB file. So if you don't see a file immediately, give it a half hour and come back.
Cleanup...
Unless there are any objections, I'll be removing the following files from my dev-host account, as well as older builds:
T769 - CM9 Experimental build, 10/25 Latest: cm-9-20121025-UNOFFICIAL-t769.zip - 137.16 MB
T769 - CM9 Kernel Flash for 10/30 build, Random WiFi MAC Fix: boot-kernel-cm9-wireless-mac-fix-20121030.zip - 6.99 MB
T769 - CM10 Experimental build, 10/24 Latest: cm-10-20121024-UNOFFICIAL-t769.zip - 159.47 MB

OK, so, first things first. I've run a basic build of CM9. I'd love to know if you guys find this stable or not. This has my kernel modifications against the kernel that it originally came from (3.0.8). The device setup is very similar to CM10 so setting up and running a build was not difficult.

BLN was wonky in CM9, that's just how it was. In fact, when talking amongst the devs about doing a CM9 build, the dude that was responsible for the BLN stuff said "don't forget CM9 has the wonky BLN" ... yeah. It's the same experience as from CM10.
The CM10 implementation is supposed to be cleaner, but the rewrite was so extensive that it is killing me to try to work support for us back into it. In fact, the CM10 very of our build uses the CM9 driver, until I can finish my port.
So, yeah, the BLN will be the same as in the CM10 release.

It should be fairly vanilla CM9, except based on my sources rather than TFQ's. I'm hoping I can get some feedback on stability and features (other than BLN) because I'm curious about the comparison to CM10. Also, because an official build of CM9 might go a long way towards making people happier about their CM experience while CM10 goes through it's growing pains

Thanks! Yeah, no one else reported back on it. I think I may have found the volume issue. Looks like I may have missed some things in the kernel. Gonna finish building some new patches tonight, so we'll see. With any luck, by the end of the day we'll have a stable CM9 where the sound is what it should be, and I577 will have a CM9 that doesn't spin like a top
And... this might help towards some sound stuff that was just reported for the CM10 build as well.

Hah! Don't get too excited... I may have been wrong
Sorry to be late guys.... This rom is probably the most stable rom out there for ics.... the only drawback is the music playback from the speakers... the headphones seem to work perfect even with apollo. Also with amazon mp3 player.. Very smooth, fluid. Feels very fast. But I noticed one glitch in any app if I close the status bar real fast I see like half of the screen flash black. To reproduce this glitch you can just open messaging: pull down the bar, let it go, then real fast drag it to the top......
Glad to hear you guys are having a good experience with this build. With any luck, it'll be "official" early next week.
I loaded a new kernel into my CM9 builds area (see second post). Please load that one up as it's what will ultimately be pushed. If I could get a day or two's worth of feedback, I'd appreciate it. It's OK to dirty flash. You can wipe dalvik if you like.
I loaded some music on my test phone and, honestly... I'm not sure how loud it's supposed to get. The volume didn't change with the final kernel patching I did. Though, the other kernel's volume seems fine to my ears You're talking about the speakerphone, right?
My test music sounded fine to me... maybe I'll load up CM10 and see if there's a difference.
EDIT: loaded CM10 and volume levels seem the same to me. . o (you can get with this... or you can get with that...)

Easy,
First, relax
Second, grab my source and fix it.
Three, rebuild the kernel and flash it.

Could you please be more specific!!! I'm not a developer, kinda new to this android stuff...so your source to me is like... matrix.
Oh! and one more thing. don't know if it's just me but, the nova launcher sometime get really laggy, sometime don't.
What beast is saying is that if you guys aren't going to help with the kernel, nagging him about its issues makes you look like entitled children. (no offense to anyone here)
He is not being paid to do any of this. So when you say stuff like "wifi isn't working still??" it makes you come off as entitled and demanding.

Trolling or being honest? If I had a WiFi fixed I would put it out ..I'm known for not keeping ROMs in the dark for long.
If you consider it trolling then report my post but what I said was the truth the only WiFi fix is for someone to fix it themselves because I'm busy and running low on ideas.

Lol seeing as how this is a developer website and the ROM says the bugs are there then I can put out the rom as I please you don't have to flash it.

This is an awesome ROM but I have been wondering why is WiFi always the thing that needs to be fixed?

the trolling i was mentioning is
you said how to fix it but he is not a developer so he could not do it by himself...
i know that, that is the way to fix it even if i iam not a developer... so i notice that it is too hard for him to do that so i called it Troll..

I'm not a developer but I wanted progress so instead of being douchy and just posting unintelligible babble I decided to teach myself as much as I could about kernel building and voila you're now running JB.
So not being a dev isn't an excuse so far as I know I'm a senior member with ROMs out because I googled my issues and read. Have a good night bro maybe you should read up and post fixes and not these types of replies because if you look back he came almost demanding a fix with all the exclamation and questions marks.

Because you've only tried the 4.2.x ROMs since anything 4.1.x and prior has perfect WiFi

But. the funny thing is. the Galaxy s 4G setting which was not working before.... now works... Weird.

Make sure you do a factory reset and wipe the /system partition too before you reflash to ensure that anything left over from the previous rom is gone.
Thread Cleaned,
Folks, the OP is here to get your assistance in the development and furthering of such development. Posting arguments about feelings getting hurt is a colossal waste of time and is a huge distraction.
If your feelings are hurt by what is said in the posts,, then there isn't much to do that move on to something else.
"Being respectful is paramount" -- Contribute or move on. Any more childish stuff and I will close thread.
Erik, thanks for another rom to play with. Keep up the great work!
This rom was amazing. But I had to go back to Cm9. And beast any way we can put the splash screen in cm9 it looks dope xp

From previous versions...recording was working, the issue was playback. I am sure the beast has gotten a few logs for that issue if not... let me know and I will get some up.
on the side of been demanding. I'm ducking now to avoid all the stuff that is about to be thrown my way but.....I hate apollo and I was wondering if the walkman app and the dark gapps are compatible with Slim bean. Just asking I am willing to crash my phone in the attempt to find out

What do you mean recording works but playback is the issue? I just want to know if I can install a program to record my calls with this rom. Stock rom it would record 2-way calls. With cynogen9 it doesn't record anything they are blank files.

Walkman should work if you just install it through PMR. Dark GApps... I wouldn't trust unless you found dark SlimGApps. Regular GApps would likely cause similar issues with weird bloat and random FCs.
Bug list
Apparently the bug list is too recursive for some. lol
10.1 Bugs
Same as 4.1.2
WiFi stays on searching for networks
Camcorder now records but videos don't play back correctly.
4.1.2 Bugs
Bln is borked
Camcorder doesn't work (see above)
gPS no worky lol
Great work erickmm! Thanks button hit. I wish I could pull the trigger on this one because I loved SlimICS. Only phone I have and I need the GPS...
Click ME for something cool lol

[Leak] 4.2.2 leaks for International S3

MOD EDIT: DO NOT FLASH THE FILE IN THAT ARTICLE, IT IS FOR INTERNATIONAL S3 ONLY!
I can't wait to see what the ROM devs do with this!
Includes some of the non hardware based goodies that the S4 has.
" New features include a familiar array of lock screen widgets and unlock effects, new display modes, a re-tooled quick settings area in the notification pull-down, a new driving mode and an updated version of the S Voice assistant app. Some of the headline Galaxy S4 features like "Air view" hover-touch abilities aren't included -- that's because they're dependent on the S4's internal hardware."

I'm pretty sure that everyone knows that already. Although thank you for pointing it out.
While AOSP is more cutting edge, I like simple functions like Bluetooth volume working correctly as it does on TW.

I have it on my other S3, along with ktoonsez's kernel. While the volume seems to be acceptable, I still get the static and clicking every now and then.
This post is not to compare TW with AOSP, some do like TW based roms.

I'm saying ktoonz does have a tw version of his kernel if that's what you prefer. You could try using the ViPER4Android app and mess with the settings to clean that up. I'm sure someone in that thread could point you to good settings. In not sure if fauxsound amplifies BT, but you could try that as well.

Just wanted to point you in the right direction to fix your Bluetooth issue either through ktoonz's touchwiz kernel, fauxsound app, or ViPER4Android app. You may need to tweak the settings a bit to your liking as i don't know how severe your issue is. Could be the phone hardware, a software issue, a rom issue, or the Bluetooth headset itself causing it. It's not something that's easy to troubleshoot online. Sorry if i lost you, I'm a bit sleep deprived. Sorry if I was vague or rude. On that note, bedtime. Hope you get your issue resolved.

I've never had the Bluetooth issue with a TW ROM, only AOSP.
Thank you for the insight though. Get some rest.
So once the International version gets the official update, we can probably expect to see it 3 or 4 months later thanks to Verizon.
I just read that article and watched the video. Looks like aosp but with a few design tweaks. It would be nice if they just fixed the keyboard in the update. Ha

I wish Verizon would leak more updates. Other phones I have had in the past had new roms almost every week. The Galaxy S3 has been a big disappointment in factory updates, released hardware, and support. Once Samsung neglected to release a decent wireless charge option and Verizon cold shouldered its users, I don't think I'll go back to Samsung. I miss my HTC.

I was looking into inductive charging. Verizon apparently offers a cover....but I can't find it.
Ha and yea the Verizon variant might see this update in September or November and it will most likely have all the cool things removed.....it's almost like they want everyone to root their phones
