What's the best way to flash a kernel? - HTC Sensation

I just reflashed my phone to viper s 1.1.0 and I'm trying to flash sebfm latest kernel 1.52 through 4ext recovery, but it won't work. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

Just put that kernel on root folder of SDcard, then reboot your phone into recovery mode. wipe dalvik cache and cache. then choose instal zip from sd card > choose that kernel. that is all i do

if you are SON but HTC-DEV unlocked ..just before flashing the kernel enable smartflash (if 4EXT recovery) in tools that will make sure your kernel gets changed

i have tried this method several times, but doesn't seem to work.
Smartflash is enabled. Is there another method or maybe an app that'll work?

Hi,
That is the main way to get it to flash.
What makes you think that it has not worked?

Flashing a kernel

Can anyone point me in the direction of a step-by-step process for flashing a new kernel into a ROM?
I want to try the new Matrix 4.0.3 kernel.
Download kernel put on SD card. Go into recovery. (Power plus volume up choose recovery hit power) wipe cache partition go to advance menu wipe dalvik. Go back install zip from SD card. Choose zip. Look for your kernel hit install reboot system. Enjoy.

Hello.
The step to flash your kernel is simple. Donwload the last version compatible ICS and put to SDCARD. Restart your phone to recovery mod : Install zip from sdcard.
Warning choose a compatible kernel.. I have try Glados V2.0.

Dont flash anything yet.. Mathkid is re-releasing do to errors
I personally always use rom manager... Flash cwm.... Pick the nexus u curently have... Once it loads.. Flash rom from sd.... Locate the file ... Wipe dalvik and cache... Ok!
It might just send u to fastboot mode... Just reboot and follow the same steps... Should get it the second time
-Google Galaxy Tab
That easy, huh? I've had ICS on since yesterday, should I flash it again THEN do the kernel, or can I just flash the kernel now and see how it goes?
And with glados, what's the difference between the BFS and CFS versions?

Install new Eclipse ROM over existing ROM

Hey, not sure of what I need to do. I have read things for clean installs, then things to unbrick your phone. I haven't seen anything for installing a newer rom.
I have the GingerBread unbloated root ROM. Nothing crazy. I want to install the newest Eclipse ROM. I downloaded the eclipse file. However, not 100% sure how to install this. When I installed my previous rom i did it with Odin. Can anybody point me in the right direction?
Isn't there an Odin for eclipse? If not you need to Odin cwm and then flash eclipse through that. Portip: you need to go into cwm on the first reboot or you will have to start over

Go here to install CWM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1106608 Once you have CWM save whatever you need to save in Titanium Backup or Google or however u save ur stuff; make sure the ROM u want is on ur SD card (kernel too, i suggest PJB if u dont have it already) and power off ur phone. then boot into CWM (Vol up, home, and power together until u see the samsung logo, then let go of power button but hold the other two until you see the text this is CWM)
You dont HAVE to do a wipe data/factory reset, but it is highly suggested. wipe cache. go to advanced and wipe dalvik. Then just choose flash file from sd card, choose ur ROM and ur done.

If you're coming from another Rom, it is highly recommended to do full wipe. Factory data, cache, dalvik. Mount system first, then flash Rom.

Where is this PJB kernel?
Can I follow this procedure coming from deodexed EP4D debloated running Imnuts kernel (4.0. something) and EXT4?
Edit: its Imoseyon's kernel.

Yes, that's exactly what I did. I installed the newest CWM first (You can find the thread in the development section) and then I installed eclipse v1.4 over the debloated/deodexed EP4D. Wipe data, cache, and Dalvik cache of course before installing the new ROM. Reboot and then go back into recovery and install PBJ 0130 kernel and you'll be good to go. Also, if you run into superuser problems, like losing root access, just reinstall the newest superuser in CWM.

Yes but I flashed the new ROM first after wiping everything and then installed the new kernel (0130 PBJ) after first full boot on the new ROM.

That procedure worked like champ. .... except:
as you suggested, Superuser lost root access.
I'm sure this is a noob question, but where/how do I plug SuperUser in through CWM. I assume there is a zip that I can load once i'm up in CWM recovery. If so, would you be kind enough to point in the right direction to get it? (I know, search is my friend, but I'm on a tight clock today.)
[EDIT] - I ran "Fix permissions" in CWM. Rebooted, and it had SU working properly.
I also Found a SuperUser Pack that is a .Zip file over at Tom's world that's flashable through CWM. I didn't use it, but I did download it.
Many thanks. You got me on Eclipse in a record amount of time.

Which firmware are you on? Did you update to Sense 3.6 + ICS with official update?
Did you unlock your bootloader through HTCDev ?
If you're on the latest firmware, flash the latest ext4 recovery. Before flashing a ICS / JB rom, on 4EXT, go to Tools - Enable Smartflash. You need this to flash custom roms with S-ON.
My sensation is S-ON and so far it's been a flawless feature. No need to flash kernels and boot.imgs through apt anymore
Thankz, i did the HTC dev unlock method and i have the latest official updates from HTC. i have flashed only the CWM image using the all in one tool for sensation. So if i understand you correctly i only have to flash the EXT4 image to the sensation which is part of the all in one tool for sensation. And i can install custom roms without using S-off?.

once you flash the 4ext recovery the all in one tool is no longer necessary
then from recovery go
tools
and at the bottom of the menu you will see the smartflash feature
enable it
after that go back
choose zip from sdcard
install zip from sdcard
thank you very much
Okay mow a little question how can i adjust my cpu frequenti (overclock) because the atuntu cpu master wont go further then 1188mhz.I found a zip file named Overclocked_kernel_v1.5.2_by_SebastianFM but when i want to install this file using the clockwork mod recovery it says that the installation failed.
Because i am trying to copy the url from xda app and i can' t do it ok then
Use the search and write(if your error is status 7)
Assert failed status 7 sensation
Download and flash the insecure.img
After that flash the kernel
Edit:it is better to install it with 4ext recovery

Okay if i flash the EXt4 recovery do i have to remove the CWM recovery or will this automaticly be removed. Using the CWM recovery with the unsecure zip file to fix status 7 errors, didnt work out when installed the overclocked kernel.
Everything went wll when installing the unsecure zipfile, it said it was okay. But when i installed the overclocked kernel it still keeps giving status 7 error.
Thats why i want to install the EXT4 recovery.

HY, the bootloop means that you are stucked at the boot sequence. This might be because you flashed the boot.img wrong/or you never wiped dalvik, cache ,etc.I suggest that you should wipe cache, dalvik, and factory reset 3 times before flasing the rom(it might not work entirely well the first 2 times) also, try to flash the boot.img correctly, and wait a few minutes (let it boot),you will now you are in bootloop after 15 minutes or so.
I did try that no help and after flashing stock rom now phone works just my internal memory is full only 17mb free so cant use almost any app cant wipe it what so ever even tried factory reset but no help

have you tried logcat to see what's causing the bootloop ?
I have an htc chacha, with the same memory problem as yours, but I managed to mount the /data folder on the sdcard's 2nd partition, and now I have 4 gb internal memory. I can have more if I change the partitions size, but I don't need more.

Are you familiar with linux ? I did all the process in linux because it's much more friendly in these cases. You will need kitchen tool, kernel kitchen, boot.img editing, and of course, cwm recovery it's a must. My phone succesfully booted when I used a class 10 sandisk sdcard.

1. Copy FlyROM zip file to sd-card.
2. Reboot into Recovery.
3. Wipe Data/Factory reset.
4. Install zip from sd card and select the zip file and then select yes to Flash.
5. Reboot after installation completes.
6. Now Apply Patch 3 for Flyrom
what could be wrong in this ????
1. Copy FlyROM zip file to sd-card.
2. Reboot into Recovery.
3. Wipe Data/Factory reset.
4. Wipe Cache Partition.
5. Wipe Dalvick cache.
6. Install zip from sd card and select the zip file and then select yes to Flash.
7. Wipe Cache Partition.
8. Wipe Dalvick cache.
9. Reboot.
could it possibly be because you forgot to clear cache or do a factory reset?

Most of the time there is no need to re-flash firmware. Did you wipe data beforehand? maybe you can try another build (the from an earlier/later date). This might help.
Sometimes a complete wipe is needed...
Hi,
Sometimes when moving from one ROM to another a complete wipe and format of all partitions (except sdcard) is needed in order for it to work. Have you wiped and formatted all your partitions before flashing the ROM? I use Titanium pro to backup my apps before doing this.
You should be able to do this with any of the recovery programs. 4EXT is really good and easy to use for this. Also, if you don't already know this, you should flash the correct GAPPS for your ROM after you install the update. That way you will have everything you need on your first boot after your flash.
Good luck!
when i updated my firmware from 3.32 to 3.33 i got stuck at the same screen. Just booted to recovery and used 4EXT Recovery touch to wipe cache and dalvik, after that everything was fine
