I have been to the stock odin root page and the link is broken. so my questions are
1. i have stock gingerbread 2.3.6 stock everything unrooted, i was wondering if i could possibly flash any rom on here and essentially be fine? Like CM9 for example could i flash a cm9 rom and be fine as long as i back up my EFS folder? or do i need to have root access first? any help would be greatly appreciated.

You need root to flash custom roms.
This guide will teach you how to use heimdall one clicks. Since you have gb already you only need to flash the antonx kernel one click.

Can someone please post a link on how one goes about rooting their phone now that superoneclick does not work after GB update? I didn't root before the update, and just tried to go through the process but to no avail. I really want to start flashing roms and unlock the power of the phone now that I have seen GB.
correct me if im wrong but i think you need to flash a rom that has root already.
as of right now you cannot root GB.
Run nvflash from the Dev section. Follow the instructions closely. There is a video available. Then flash xboarders rom. Then you will have a rooted updated rom.

First, download the rooted GB 2.3.3 ROM and copy it onto your SD card
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179748
You won't be able to root with Superoneclick or any other rooting app. The easiest and fastest way to go about this is to flash CWM via NV flash.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847
After flashing CWM reboot in recovery mode and flash the rooted ROM and voila!
You have the newest baseband and a rooted GB phone.
P.S. To be honest, I think the only reason that makes it worth going through all this trouble is being able to flash the new baseband on your phone.
Good Luck!

That is the easiest way to get root access.
Thank you all! So I'll be able to flash CM7 after this?
Also, I would assume devs are working on a way to use superoneclick, am I wrong?

I keep seeing this same reply and wondering... Can't someone make the necessary root files a flashable zip and then we don't have to flash a whole ROM to attain root?
Actually, so far they can't. The way you get root on your phones is by finding a security exploit so you can write a few files, and busybox simlinks to the system. Then, it installs superuser. No roms are rooted on android by default (well, stock ones anyways.) Since all the current methods to root a gingerbread rom don't work on the new update, this is the only way to do it for now.
I have a g2x and i can't root it. ive rooted my other one 2.2.2 which was easy as heck. but now im stuck with the update on the one im using. if you guys could help me out it would be appreciated.
Here's a very similar thread. You're answer is there.

do i have to Clockwordmod flash it first then root the phone?
Yea, first flash clockworkmod with nvflash and then flash the root zip file from jboxer's thread. Reboot and your stock rom will be rooted.
then i should be able to flash any rom correct

Exactly correct. No need to root first. That zip is for those who want to keep their stock rom and just root it.
If you want to flash another rom, then no need to root first. Just nvflash cwm and flash roms to your heart's content.
so i dont even have to root the phone to flash the rom? i can just nvflash and then flash the rom?

Yes and Yes. If you flash a rooted rom then it will be rooted. CWM runs a mini OS, not the full OS, so rooting is not an issue when you are in CWM. Clockworkmod always runs fully rooted.
I understand that there is no way to gain root access via z4root or superoneclick because these programs do not work on GB 2.3.3. on this phone as of yet. So I was wondering the method people are using instead? Sorry if this has already been asked but I was only able to find methods that work with froyo.

Well why would you use 2.3.3? The phone got an official 2.3.6 upgrade. To root just use Odin to flash a modded kernel. Get root and recovery at the same time. 2.3.3 has issues. I would steer clear of that build.

I thought you had to be rooted in order to flash a rom in the first place?... I had no idea GB 2.3.6 could be flashed yet as I read guides on having to downgrade to 2.3.3 first to do so. So I will upgrade to OFW GB 2.3.6 and then flash via odin then . Is there a ROM you could please recommend I use on the SGS4G?? I am waiting on a JTAG on the phone right now because of a wrong rom hardbricking it. I do not want to make this mistake twice when I get it back.

No, you don't have to be rooted first to flash a ROM. GB 2.3.6 has been out officially since last November. You can upgrade via Kies Mini, RaverX3X has an official 2.3.6 ODIN upgrade (same files as Kies Mini, just repacakged for ODIN), and there are the one-clicks that can be utilized as well. Any of those three options should work for you.
Best of luck to you.
I am unable to find a rom in md5 form so i can flash with odin, only .zip that contains a meta folder a system folder and a updates folder to use with Odin. Will I maybe have to by putting the rom files on the sd card and trying to flash or is there a way to convert the rom to a md5 file?

The ROM you grabbed is for flashing via CWM, not ODIN. Look in the Bible (in the Developer's forum) for ODIN ROMs or, while reading through the Developer's forum, make sure it says ODIN on it.
Hello!
I just got a pretty good deal on a stock Froyo Infuse 4G, so I bought it.
A little help please! I would love to have the stock ATT rom with the ability to overclock the processor. This is was I have done so far.. plrease don't be so hard on me since this is my first non-HTC device lol.
So the first thing I did was install a "leaked" Gingerbread ATT stock rom using a program called Odin. Then, I root it using that Superoneclick software... I actually clicked a million times instead trying to get it working because I had GingerBread instead of Froyo ... but somehow managed to do it, it is properly rooted and well tested. So! now with my rooted device, I downloaded Rom Manager from the market, flashed it succesfully (at least that's what the screen said)... and when trying to boot into CWM Recovery I got the following errors:
verifying update package...
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
installation aborted.
I tried to flash it via RomManager several times, also did it via SD-Card renaming it to Update.zip and flashing it with the stock recovery.. same error. I searched for more information, someone in the forum said the reason could be an incompatible Kernel, so I flashed the Community V8 Kernel... and my device didn't boot past the Samsung screen... but somehow if I tried manaully to get into CWM recovery, it worked! (just the recovery). Flashed a custom rom that I didn't like... then suddenly I lost the CWM Recovery and cannot then bricked it and was unable to flash it again..
I managed to restore the phone to ATT factory condition using a guide here on Xda (this time the phone kept the leaked GB rom)... then rooted it again and haven't done anything else. Mu question is:
How can I keep this stock rom with the ability to overclock the processor? (flashing different kernels just makes it freeze on boot at Samsung logo).
Thanks for your help!::
here a good start by me:

Thanks, it is a useful link but I still don't find the answer to my question (or maybe I just don't undertand it).
I am beyond frustration... could anyone please tell me what to do to step by step to flash an overclockable Kernel keeping my GingerBread stock ATT rom? like if you were explaining it to a retarded person?
many thanks...

1. You need to restore you phone back to stock using gtg's unbrick or heimdall 1 click. (See my post)
2. ATT's GB latest is not rootable thru SOC. You can use odin to flash an insecure kernel (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1212485) but you will also need to update superuser binaries and busybox as well. Running the insecure kernel for OC, you will lose the video recorder and video player.
It doesn't sound like you can understand enough yet to do this.
3. If you want a stock att and rooted, go to the dev section:
check out zeus stock 5.2, vagabond or victory. These are GB stock base roms with root already done. There is also dman's deodexed, rooted gb uclb3 already with oc kernel...no video

Thanks for the info!
The first step has been done, restored the phone using Heimdall one click after bricking it, the phone was restored with a UCKJ4 2.36 GingerBread stock ATT rom (Kernel 2.6.35.7-I997uckj4-cl694350) and I am also rooted using SuperOneClick.
I don't fully understand step two, will try it once I get some more knowledge.
Question about the third step... does HDMI work in any of those custom stock roms? I use HDMI a lot.

My Vagabond ROM runs the stock kernel if you follow directions.
HDMI will work. Battery is excellent. Feel free to check it out

oc = no HDMI, and currently, no video on some rom
Hello,
I have a Motorola Atrix 2 that my friend somehow had put it on the stock rooted deodexed 2.3.6 rom. Then following that he un-rooted it while still on the stock rom and now I can not root it at all. If anyone knows a was to root this device I would love to know or a way to flash it to were it is completely stock so I can root it. I have just had alot of trouble with the apps and I want to go back to another rom or the stock rom.
Thanks xda-developers, Aedyn.
what have you done to try to root it ?
in the development forum there's a clear step-by-step to root stock ROM ..
*Reply*
I have used the click to unroot application...
He had a few other roms on it before so he went and flashed the deodexed 2.3.6 rooted firmware to it then unrooted it.
Now alot of apps will have force closes and I cant log into myyearbook.
Id like a way to get it to a complete stock firmware...
Thankyou for the help!
Try super one click. That's what I had to use as the other method did not work for me. I posted a drop box link to it in this thread a while back. Just do a search for it.

1 Hard reset your phone once
2 Follow steps as shown at Deodexed rooted ROM page.
3 You will be rooted else Follow the instructions to root 2.3.6
Good Luck...
If none of the above works, you may have to
1.) flash the 2.3.5 fkz,
2.) root 2.3.5
3.) install bootstrap
4.) flash 2.3.6 deodexed (which will retain root)
