Thoughts on an Open Source MIUI Clone - Android General

I've been contemplating this for some time now and as I become more committed to doing this I decided to come to the XDA community for input. Love it or hate it MIUI has done some things right when it comes to custom ROMs. The one big thing that I feel they offered that others have fallen short on is it's theming ability. Other parts of MIUI come with their pros and cons but the one thing that has stifled it's growth in the community is the lack of open sourced code. I've been porting MIUI on several devices for miui.us for a while now and the one thing that has really been a pain is the countless smali hacks needed to get a good port released.
So with that said, here's what this post is really about. I'd like to begin work on a completely open source clone of MIUI. I'm not looking to make this a 100% clone, but I would like to implement as many of the features that makes it a good and unique ROM. First and foremost would be getting the framework and SystemUI modified to work with MIUI's themes. From that point the project could be broken down into all the various sub-projects like the customized apps. I understand the magnitude of this project and it's not one that a single person can take on. Part of what makes the open source community so great is the fact that people from all over the world can contribute to make a product better and I believe that with others that are committed to seeing a project such as the one I propose come to fruition as I am, this could easily become a reality.
I've worked on large projects and I've done my fair share of android development both on the application side and on the ROM side of things, so I understand the breadth of this project. What I'd like to know is if this sounds like something others would be interested in both from a user's perspective and from a developer's perspective. With it being AOSP based and open sourced, we could see better support for devices which MIUI does not officially support.
tl;dr - I'd like to start an AOSP based project that offers an alternative to MIUI's closed source ROM. MIUI theme support is a must and if stock MIUI apps could work with it out of the box, even better. I'd like to hear your thoughts and ideas about such a project.
note: I have the experience and know how to make this a reality with the right team and contributors. I'm merely looking for feedback and those that may be interested in contributing to the project.
Thanks for your time.

you know i love the idea happy to see this might finally be a reality, and count on me to help wherever i can. now hurry up so i can port it to the One S buddy

Count on me on whatever you need You are an awesome dev after all, this will be easy for you.

completly agree, its one of the big deciding factors to me using miui. its especially a big problem when it comes to updaing base versions like ics to jellybean.
i would absolutly love to have paranoidandroid(tablet/n7 interface options) with themes(and icon generation) and lbe integration.

Thanks superkid. It won't be easy though but that's why I think a lot of us do this stuff, for the challenge. And who knows, as the project matures we may see some of it's features end up in other ROMs, which would be cool by me. That's part of what is motivating me to take the initiative on getting this project off the ground.

+1 for this
This is the reason I love XDA so much! Great idea and I hope it becomes the best alternative to MIUI
Can't contribute code but will support it for Xperia Neo & Arc when the code is released lithium

Lol

Until there's something to release, this doesn't belong in the Development forum.
Moved to General.

It would be a great project. I'd love to see what comes of it.

LeWa OS
I know LeWa did something similar to this. It looks good, but could really use some improvement. I'm pretty handy with adobe illustrator if you need any design let me know.

I'm currently porting MIUI for Samsung GT-i9300 on AOSP base and really want to support this cause. It's a brilliant ideea, like the man who wants to implement it.
You can count on me.

Sounds awesome. Hope it happens.
A move like this is big and can only happen at xda. I'm not a dev but would donate to this project.

I stopped support for CM10, AOKP and so on because of a lack of support for devices. Also their code is unstable, sloppy, ...
I always have skipped MIUI because of the Chinese stuff included. If we can start a open source MIUI project with better translations I will support you and help programming.
I will only support the project if the focus is on user experience, and not crazy modifications like Cyanogenmod. We have enough of those. By this I mean color multipliers, gamma multipliers, vibration multipliers, ...
I also would like to support tablets if this is a go. I can also translate to dutch.

I'd be interested in supporting this project.. I'm a dev, Java primarily but I'm half decent with C/C++ so would definitely like to help out.. Always like MIUI but find it very laggy in general compared to other offerings

A nice idea, will be interesting to see how it goes!

super great idea good luck to all devs and contributors.
Q: is the miui promise to open source is off? is their github updating or dead?

Sounds good. I'm in.

I really don't mind people using my work but it especially pisses me off when a) someone uses my work without asking permission or even giving credit and b) releases my work and butchers it with poor themeing. The majority or this "theme" was completely ripped from my "MattedBlues" theme without even messaging me to ask if it was okay.
OP: if you had asked for permission or given credit, I would have been nice and allowed it. But, since you did not do that, I am kindly requesting that you take this down immediately or else remove my work from the zip. Thank you.
looks like mattedblue but it looks like Slate too
Hard to say. My slate theme the only thing I used from mattedblues was the battery icon. If this was based off of mine then it should be similar. Just for future reference no body needs to ask my permission or give credit to me cause its just a free dev community. That stuff is not important to me, neither is monetary gain.

I don't care about monetary gain either, I have a real job. I just believe it's polite and respectful to give credit where it's due and ask for permission to use people's work.

While true, this is a free dev community, nobody likes to see their work stolen and passed off as someone else's ideas. It looks very MB, it looks very Slate, it's hard to tell where it truly came from but if it did come from MB, I believe that credit should be given and/or permission asked prior to gangstering for your own.
All anyone wants is to be credited for their hard work.
/rant
My only point is that almost nobody EVER reads the credit lists anyways. I just feel instead of bashing somebody right on their thread about something that should be kept to PM's.
I had a issue where I forgot to credit JsChiSurf for the aosp lockscreens and he was cool about it and just pm'd me, it was just a mistake on my part.
Just point being here is that there are better ways to handle things imo, but as most people have seen lately this entire community is turning into a disaster anyways so I should not expect much... Won't be checking this thread again.
I had a theme in my SD it was titled slate not sure where I got it none the less if you are the maker a simple pm would have been nice and its modified and again I was not sure who's this was as I stated but coming here and bashing like a complete ass is no way to handle this

Trust me, you'd know if I was bashing. And calling me a "complete ass" certainly isn't a "mature" way to handle things - ironic since your PM to me talked about dealing with it in a mature way and moving on. Done with this (just remembered why I don't use xda anymore). Have a good night.

$100 Bounty

I am new to xda but I think I speak for everyone. We are tired of waiting for asop. We don't want no look alike or no desensed B.S. WE WANT THE REAL THING! $100 WILL BE DONATED TO THE FIRST DEVELOPER TO POST AN ASOP ROM THAT WORKS. WE CAN WAIT FOR CAMERA,WIFI ECT TO BE FIXED. ALSO DEV FOR HIRE. $100 per rom and $50 and upgrade. I use to pay Jaywan to be my personal dev. But he has cancer and can no longer dev for me. Any Dev can contact him to see if I really pay up or not. So if you wanna make some cash PM ME!
i'll pay $150 to who ever can get that SWEEEEET Sense 3.0 on our Thunderbolts
I don't know if this is a joke or not but it's not funny if it is. Throwing money around just shows how immature and impatient you are.
Also, these Dev's are working their asses off trying to get this to work it's not like they are sitting at home doing nothing. Just let them do their thing and eventually you and all of us will get what we want.

There is nothing immature or wrong with this post. He is offering to pay for the services of someone here.
Now the second poster, THAT I think is Immature to hijack and one up someone else's thread
Just wait for CM7 and donate money to them.
They will do the best job for AOSP rom.
It will start off full of bugs, so I am sure you don't want to pay $150 for bugs?
Just be patient and sense is pretty good, I think AOSP is rather boring as it makes all phones look the same.

All of the AOSP ROM devs are waiting for the same thing... working RIL. This has been finalized (according to the CM devs working on the Mecha) but not posted to Git.
No RIL code has been published meaning no AOSP ROMs either.
Patience is key. It will all happen in due time. I am willing to wait a tad extra in exchange for a thorough job on development.

google writes the code for android, then releases it to the github repository for anyone, any manufacturer, to pull down, compile, and flash to their device. HTC and companies also take this code, customize it, and sell devices.
AOSP is jsut the pure, unedited, the-way-google-intended, stock android operating system. its what the nexus one and nexus s run. its much better (i think) than sense UI or any other customized manufacturer skin out there. pure, elegant, android goodness.
also, htc sense is closed source. using AOSP version, all the code is there for you to look at, make a change, edit a driver, compile that ROM and flash to your device. you do not have access to HTC sense secret stuff, but AOSP is all open source.
Besides, if any member of AndIRC is the one who releases, they'll want you to donate to a charity or someone who needs it.
Just do yourself a favor and wait.
Look guys money talks. Any developer that wants to talk business I'm all ears... And i pay well.

Someone build this UI for the Infuse! (Emblaze Else Concept)

So I remembered a cool concept from a long time ago that I had seen on engadget. It was a really cool UI that you operated with only one finger and dragging. It was a truly unique design and I loved the futuristic appearance. After a few hours of trying to remember the name and googling, I found it! Now I am aware that this concept is 2 years old, but its still so fresh and awesome.
Its called the Emblaze Else handset. The UI and OS is based on linux too! So would it be possible to get someone to build a simple homescreen replacement based on this? or maybe in some magical way get a port of this? It is the most drool worthy thing I have ever seen.

The Devs here all started just like this dude, they wanted something and learned how to make it happen. Google is an awesome source for finding how to's. Instead of asking someone else to do it for you, Google it and do it yourself. I'm sure if you pm any of the Devs they could help you with any questions if you get stuck.

Appreciate the encouragement. I have looked at the sdk page and have watched a few tutorial videos online but I have never written a line of code in my life. For anything.
That said. Is there a language that is both easy to learn, and compatible with the sdk to build a launcher with?
Ide be open to any suggestons or links to language tutorials! I would love to be able to learn some coding and contribute to the community.

posting in here so i know where to come back, hope for some good info or sources on getting into programming as im stuck trying to figure out which ones best to start with.
Great looking design im sure it was a great idea bought out by some company that just had their leader step down so we would never get to choose it or something!
I can't find any new messages 'bout this software. I wish to try install it on my mobile... Is anybody has any news or tried to download this UI ??
Haha this ui was designed by a company called emblaze for a whole new phone.
Although it is built using linux, the entire OS was never released and neither was the phone. I made a thread about it to see if some devs would be willing to build a launcher similar to this. Its an amazing ui.
I believe one of the key designers now works for HP so hopefully we will see something like this coming to the next generation of devices from them.

There is a thread in the dev section about "compiled ICS msm8660". Best I can tell, it is full of a bunch of tallented people that are compiling code line by line and debugging to get an ASOP ICS base for this phone. If those people are not defined as "Devs" I don't think the word should exist. Plus, several great ROMs to chose from in the DEV section. Personally, I'd like to see more done with the "stock" ROM, but there are limitations as to what can be done to an Odexed ROM. It should be interesting to see what happens when Samsung leaks true codes for this phone.
Dude, why don't you do a little something then? Its called contribute. Have some respect for the devs here. They are supporting MANY devices in MANY aspects besides just ROMs. They also have families, friends, and full-time jobs. I have great respect for the devs here and I appreciate all they're work, my device supported or not. I didn't see what I liked so I modded a stock ROM the way I wanted. I didn't sit here and ridicule. I've researched, I've read, researched and read some more. I learned. I'm also doing my best to help others. So now is the tome you shut up or nut up bro. Have some respect for our ass busting devs. Not to mention pro bono. ****. Sorry devs and mods, I appreciate your work and wish I knew or could even do half of what you can. I am loyal. I am supportive. I apologize some people are selfish, irresponsible, and ignorant. Dev on and open source forever!

I will still say the ROMs are great work. The devs behind them are awesome. I in no way will ridicule the devs or theyre work. I compiled something I wanted instead. I learned how. By god I almost lost all my hair but I succeeded. And no I probably won't post it or any rom. Not until I get a lot more experience. So devs and mods I appreciate your hard work. I appreciate even more the info you all have left in various threads for us to learn from so we can CONTRIBUTE ourselves instead of flaming others for our own irresponsible ignorant a$$3$. [ROM][JB 4.3] Unofficial Carbon ROM [11-14-13]

About Carbon
Huge thanks to Coderz for letting me port his rom from the MyTouch 4g and huge thanks to flinny/devil-kin for the kernel and some system files!
CarbonRom is an aftermarket firmware based on the Android Open Source Project. We are dedicated to fast, stable, and feature-filled roms, honesty and communication with our users, and openness with our code. We like frequent builds, with the very latest and greatest hardware support and fixes. We strive to not only provide you with the best rom we can build, but also to give back to the Android community and our fellow developers. For us, this is about creating something we can be proud of and hope you will enjoy.
Please feel free to look at, build, and use our code on CarbonDev GitHub.
We would like to thank CyanogenMod for their device trees, framework/settings mods and their code that was incorporated into this project. We also extend our gratitude to the devs whose code that we have incorporated. Proper authorship has been maintained and can be viewed on our repository.
Special thanks also go to Slim Rom for some of their features, PA, AOKP, and anyone else we may have borrowed commits from that hasn't been mentioned here. If you feel you have been unfairly left out, please - let us know.
While we make every effort to test these builds as much as possible, we are not responsible for anything that may happen to your device, family, pets, or perception of reality. We ask that you do your part to know your device and know how to recover from problems before you flash! If you have questions, ask your fellow users or ask us in #teamcarbon on freenode IRC.
Features
Simply stated, we can't really list features here. There are too many and they change too frequently, and we now support a truly insane number of devices. Chances are, if you like a feature, we have it already. Seriously.

1) Search. Search, search, search. Yes, you. I don't care how unique or important your question is, it's very likely someone has adressed it already. Especially if you're even close to new at this.
2) Read our FAQ, which can be found on our goo.im page linked above. It's new, but expanding fast. Just like us!
3) Ask a question in your device forum. Someone will no doubt try to help you. Warning: this help may come in the form of telling you it's a dumb question that has been asked before. See step 1 - such are the perils of asking questions when you haven't done the research yourself. Android is about helping yourself.
4) Join our G+ Community: http://community.carbon-rom.com This is where we spend the bulk of our time and the best way to reach us and other community members. We update and frequent this community far more than XDA, simply due to time constraints and the convenience of G+.
5) Ask a question on our IRC channel. Connect to #teamcarbon on irc.freenode.net or click here. You'll find several other Carbon fans and usually one or more devs as well. Please be polite.

Remember, every penny you send to us goes right back into the rom. It's used for hardware, server costs, etc - all the things that help us make Carbon better with every release. Your support means the world to us! If you've enjoyed Carbon, please consider a donation toward this goal. Thank you, and we hope you continue to enjoy Carbon!

A simple google search "gapps" and ul find them and telling people dont install is just rude.

Tommypacker first of all thank you for developing for a device you dont own..... But why not build carbon rom 4.2.2 based on andromadus 4.2.2 ... I am saying this coz 4.2.2 is rock solid and very good base... Just my two cents..... Thank you again

So far so good Many thanks
clocked to 1.2 (ondemand) to reduce the slight lag.
Also using Trebuchet launcer.
Good Rom will test the battery drain overnight.
MANY THANKS
I like it, I really do, I might even give up cm on my phone for it, but the stuttering animations kills it. Please find a solution because I'm really looking forward to using this ROM.
