I got my TF300T a couple of weeks ago and I'm generally pleased with it but one thing that is driving me insane is this auto contrast / brightness function that is always running on this tablet. When watching a movie or youtube clip with bright content then you can clearly see the brightness and contrast constantly changing, most visible on low brightness in a dark room.
I have not rooted my tablet yet but I think I'm going to do it soon, but today I saw this fix from the TF700 forum and I was wondering if this also work on the TF300?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=29819724&postcount=61
Has anyone tried it yet, because if it works then I'll definitely be rooting it.

I haven't tried but I don't see how it wouldn't work, since the original tweak was found by a nexus 7 user.

Oh god thank you!! I'm gonna try this tonight, the auto contrast thing was driving me crazy.
hey this problem only happens in power saving mode, right?
Sadly, cannot seem to find any fix for non-rooted device like mine atm. All my android devices are usually on auto-brightness but it's unusable in tf300, that's my only gripe on this pad.

Download Terminal Emulator from the market and then type in the commands. When you type SU in terminal it gives superuser permission to the running terminal so you can type in the tweaks.
If I unlock the screen, around all the texts there is black framing until after one second or two it goes away...is this the auto contrast?

Got my Infinity yesterday - loving it so far. I was worried after all the negativity on the forums over the last few weeks, but I couldn't be happier.
My one issue is with the brightness of the screen. I know some people have taken issue with the auto-dimming feature. I have the complete opposite problem - I can't adjust the brightness of my screen! Moving from balanced to power saving to performance makes no difference. Turning on Super IPS? No difference.
Am I doing something bone-headed? Anyone else have this problem?

Your issue more than likely will not be solved on the forums anytime soon. Amazon is very good at exchanging defective items usually shipping it the next day. Your stressing over this to much, and you don't have to. It cost you nothing to exchange the tablet.

Just wanted to let you know I'm having the same problem. I've tried a factory restore as well still no brightness control. Thing that sucks is I returned my prime for a screen defect, now I get a faulty infinity. I'm beginning to question asus quality at this point and starting to think about perhaps getting a Google nexus 7 even with its limitations.

yeap, sometimes a white horizontal line appears for a second o less in my tablet. I have to tell you that I don't have yet "the buttery" in it. Waiting to have time for a factory reset to improve the performance.
I saw other posts from the prime and the infinity as well, that after a while it gets worse, and a factory reset doesn't help at wall. I whant to resolve this without having to exchange it. I'm sick of having to go to the store and exchanging it. It's my 3rd Infinity.

Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF700T using XDA Premium HD app
Yes, it's a JB issue. I've only had it happens once, not seen it since.
It's just screen tearing. Happens on a pc, too, although there videocard drivers have Vsync options to forcefully match the refreshrate from the program to the screen to prevent screentearing. I suspect there's a difference between JB and the Transformer's refreshrate.
We're using an Nvidia card, has anyone send Nvidia a message? (I don't have the problem anymore, so I can't make a support ticket...) More likely to work than wait for Google or Asus to notice.
Also, I don't have root nor unlocked, but tp anyone who has, is there a way to change the refresh rate manually?
Should I do a factory reset after updating to JB? I noticed that it got faster, etc... But was wondering if it would still improve after a factory reset. If yes, how do I do a factory reset? And is there a way to have my infinity exactly the way it was (wallpapers, configurations, apps, etc.)?
So I shouldn't return my infinity? If it's a software problem... I'm sick of having to return this model.

I have also the same issue than OP. I contacted Asus by email to try and figure out what's wrong. I got the tablet on Monday and upgraded to JB right away, so I don't know if the problem was there before in ICS. But reading this thread I think that it's related to JB. It's a "good thing" though, because this is my second TF700 and I don't want to send it back, again. The first one had a very white spot in the middle of the screen..*. But no flickering black lines issue.
So, you guys think that they can fix this with the next release?

I'm really not sure then. Personally, I haven't had a singe reboot and/or SOD though, so it must be something specific to the setup for the folks that are having this problem. If you really want to figure it out, I'd suggest a factory reset and try running the tablet without installing all of your apps/tweaks at the same time.
How often does this happen? Can you try running a "bare-bones" setup and see if it still occurs? If not, then slowly start introducing your specific apps/tweaks one (or a few) at a time. Yes, it's a pain, but it's the only way to diagnose such issues... Have you tried looking at logcat outputs at all? That's another way to try and diagnose the problem. These types of issues are very hard to troubleshoot - it's a slow, tedious process. But, since most folks aren't seeing random reboots and or "sleep of death" issues, it is fixable (unless it's a hardware problem, of course).
So, here's a few questions that might help troubleshoot:
1. Has this always happened on your device or only since upgrading to Jelly Bean?
2. How often does it typically happen?
3. Have you tried installing Jelly Bean from scratch (not upgrading ICS)?
4. Are you installing your apps "fresh" or are you restoring them via Titanium backup (or some other backup app)?
Again, there is no quick, easy solution to this type of problem....

Hmm, that actually sounds a little more serious that just the setting that I talked about a few posts back... Almost sounds like a hardware issue.
Let us know what you find out - a picture would also help. In fact, if you take a screenshot with the TF700 and post the picture and the picture looks fine, then it would definitely be a hardware problem (the screenshot would capture what is supposed to be displayed - if it's a hardware problem, the screenshot would look normal to everyone else, but would still look bad to you, if that makes any sense)...

I don't think you should be fearing that much about bricking your device. There are a few unlucky people brick their devices every time there's an update.
I wouldn't flash the update on an unlocked device. That is how some TF300 users bricked their devices. Wait for Asus to put up the full rom.
I'm just going to wait. Mainly because a lot of apps aren't 4.2 optimized yet. I'm not afraid of bricking since i'm full stock, but I always have bad luck with updates of all sort.

How is the 4.2 running compares to 4.1? faster, smoother, no change??
I've noticed the "recent apps" function has changed. Instead of a vertical row on the left side of the tablet, you now get a full screen, horizontal look, of your recent apps. Will take some time getting use too.
On the cold boot screen. I believe you now how to manually start the cold boot (by highlighting the android icon) then pressing up on your volume key.
Lastly, I get an annoying warning about my sound being dangerous if to high, when I try to raise the volume. Anyway to disable that?

Any thoughts?
On edit,
Now its restarted and it's downloading the system update file again.
Its doing the same thing, checked system integrity and then powering off but this time it looks like 4.2 is installing.
One minor thing I've noticed is that the inexpensive 3rd party charger I bought off Amazon now no longer registers as charging (although my 3rd party battery app does, indeed, show that the unit is charging). That's an annoyance, albeit minor.
Unless the new tablet version is extremely different than the phone version, Asus is no longer using the stock camera app. So no photosphere.
Also, no quick camera access from the lock screen, not that I'm using the tablet often to take quick pictures.
