Hello xda members,
I found something interesting when i looked onto my favourite website for Android: androidnext.de
Some people ported the Id Tech 4 onto Android. This was possible due to the fact that this engine has
been made Open Source a while ago. The game itself isn't Open Source, but if you own a copy of it
you can copy the needed files. Note that the work is in early stages, so you can't play the game at the moment
because they need to fix a lot of bugs of the engine on Android.
But hey, wait a little bit and we maybe play Id Tech 4 games like Quake 4, Wolfenstein and so on. :good:
And the Xperia Play would be the perfect handset to play on it.

OMG ! that would be so awesome if someone ported Doom 3 for the Xperia PLAY,
Sent from my R800i using xda app-developers app
If this works, I dont see how our device can run Doom 3.... I may very well be wrong.... guess only time will tell. I still own my original bought on Day 1, limited edition Doom 3 for original XBOX on mint condition. and the suedo sequel Resurrection of Evil. Love those games. Doom 4 will be coming out with supposedly support for Virtual Reality
http://gamerant.com/doom-4-virtual-reality-oculus-rift/
All in all this would be bada$$ if it works.
Awesome! I love Doom 3. I hope it gets proper Xperia Play controls. :fingers-crossed:
Thanks for the info.
My heart's racing! This will be awesome!
Funny though, on another forum, there was a thread based on what games would be awesome on mobile, I said Doom 3 for Android and said why and believed that it would be possible as time goes because of it's low requirements and the fact that it was released for Linux as well. This is so cool!
@jgregoryj1
I think it's possible to bring it on our Xperia Play. The Engine is Open Source, so with right optimations in regards to CPU, GPU, RAM,
Texture size, resolution etc. it can be done. By the way: The guy in the video uses an HTC Desire HD, spec wise almost the same (except more RAM than Play has). Also, Doom 3 is available on Xbox and this console is weaker than our Xperia Play. So, i think it will be a great expansion to our game library. Hope, it will come soon.:fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed:
Don't forget the other Id Tech 4 games!!!

Eh, that'll depend actually, Brink used iD Tech 4, it's requirements are much higher, even though they're on the same engine.

In all fairness it used a heavily modified engine of Tech 4; we can play Quake 3 on our phones but not Jedi Academy which also uses a modified engine since the requirements and certain assets do change in the process. You can clearly tell by looking at the specs for Doom 3 that it will be possible on current high-end and future devices. The Play sadly will never see it.
Kokak is actually planning on porting Doom 3 and I think that will be the port that eventually gets it right. His DoomGLES is incredible. http://www.droidgamers.com/index.php/game-news/interviews/4324-interview-with-kokak-games-about-future-ports-network-support-for-current-games-and-more

I wasnt saying he could make it work with the PLAY in its current version.... we can always be hopefuly of an Xperia PLAY 2... but I would be totally floored if it became a reality, as it is..... incredibly doubtful..... Tiger Lab apps(nds demo emulator)
[Only open for limited days]
1. VERY EARLY PROTOTYPE VERSION(BETA) FOR DEMO ONLY
2. It is very very slow so you shall not expect to play NDS game with this emulator.
3. It is used to DEMO that NDS game can be played on android phone
It is shown that NDS WILL be played some days on android phone, maybe 2012 or later
WHAT IS NEXT WORK (Huge efforts)
1. More powerful phones
2. Dynarec CPU simulation
3. GPU simualtion improvement for speed greatly.
4. Hareware render (eg, OpenGL ES)
5. FPU. Since NDS need lots of float calculation. FPU can improvement performance greatly. Later ARM will have FPU in feature
If you do not have a high-end phone, do not try NDS game. Even if you have a high-end phone, just try some small games(none 3D) but it is also quite slow.
How to demo (not play) NDS game
1. Put your nds ROM files to /roms/nds folder in sdcard.
Note. zip nds rom is not supported, you shall extract them to be *.nds files
2. Launch TigerNDS which will load those NDS roms in game list
3. Select one game and play
It is just DEMO and speed is very very very very slow even on high-end phones. You shall not expect to play nds game with the emulator.

Good job devs! Keep it up!

Might work well for the Kyocera Echo
This looks promising!
I know it's just a proof of concept currently, but why are they saying it would need new devices to run well? It seems like, since the DS and our devices are both ARM based, with some obvious modifications to run arm code natively and not emulated, you could get it running pretty well. At least that's what I had gathered from previous discussions about it.

In order to emulate a nintendo DS your phone needs to have twice the power. But to be honest I never thought the DS was too powerful... So I bet once the emulator is out of alpha it should run fine on a galaxy S. But who knows were still waiting for Zodttd to finish the N64 emulator
Wow! This would be awesome!! I miss Mario Bros on my phone
I tried on HD2, and yes is very very very slow, but it works.

Of course, I am familiar with emulators and how, as a rule of thumb, your device should be 10 times more powerful to expect any sort of decent emulation. I'm just saying, maybe they can avoid emulating certain things and run native ARM DS code natively, vastly speeding it up. It would be REALLY hard though, requiring vast knowledge of ARM assembly from what I've heard. Meh, Zodttd. He should stick to iPhone imo. Android will probably get some decent open source emulators soon enough.

decent emulation takes about 5-10 times the power to emulate
and ive heard that emulating the DS is extremely difficult
as for zod i honestly doubt he is still working on that project paul seems to be the one that is on top of the project now
I'll try it out with my Atrix tonight, maybe post a youtube video. Is there a standard game we are using?
I've been trying to run a .nds file on this. The ROM is Pokemon Platinum (128mb). It's on /roms/nds and shows up in the app, however when I click on it it flashes to a black screen then goes back to the rom selection screen.

LOL!!!! That's hilarious! But that might be true too.
Sighh..
I remember the time when psp can emulate ds rom even though the frame rate per second was really low! (Average 17fps!)
I stopped using handhelds after the Gameboy Advance.. besides, it feels like all these games are the same rehash with little story change and somewhat better graphics.. there doesn't seem to be any new creative things being done in the handheld market.. so I say why bother killing your phone trying to emulate the NDS..
with that in mind, we are looking at quad-core phones by the end of 2012 for SURE, and dual-core by fall 2011 I hope, so just wait a few more months haha.
my bigger concern about emulation and games on the Android is multitouch.. even my Desire on 2.3.3 (CM7) has issues where multitouch fails, rendering even most old games unplayable (how the hell can I run and jump in Mario at the same time like the real gamepad allows.. if we wanna improve the quality of gameplay on our phones, we should push the manufacturers for better hardware that'll allow coders to provide for better multitouch capability.
just my 2 cents..
I wouldn't worry about that, bluetooth gamepads are on the way.
I use a Wiimote with classic controller for emulators at the moment.
NDS emulation can be slow even on PC, so don't expect phones to run games playable
alienhunt: more like spring 2011 for dual core.
i'll be getting a tegra2 phone in the mail next week.

Can somebody make better explanation? How high end should devices be? Would current devices (Desire, Galaxy S) be enough or do we need to wait for dual core?
Bluetooth gamepads are nice, but i think they are more like "i can do that" than really being usable. Games on the phones are meant to be played anywhere. And i don't want to carry a wiimote around with me just to play games on my phone.
I have tried several emulators on my HD2 and games are quite playable despite HD2's limit of maximum 2 touch points. Biggest problem is the feedback of the controls. You cannot feel controls, which means you can easily miss it.
I think best on screen controls would be ones that are fully customizable. Ability to move and resize controls to match your device, finger size and playing position would be killer feature.

Rockstar Games just updated their facebook post with the release info of GTA III but unfortunately Xperia Play is not on the supported device list.
Check website post http://www.rockstargames.com/newswi...year-anniversary-edition-coming-to-mobil.html
The ONLY phone it will be fun to play on, imo. Wonder if they are having trouble with the power of our phone? If so, I wonder how much an OC'd Play would help. It seems that list is filled with very powerful single core devices, and dual core only.
All supported devices are Tegra 2 or 3, apparently.
This dual-core only **** is the most stupid crap i ever heared. This does not have better grafics that shadowgun wich runs completly lagfree on the xperia play. Also it runs on iphone 4 and the Xplay has better hardware that the iphone 4, and the ultra low power gpu in tegra 2 (yes it is called ultra low power^^) is not really better than our adreno205. But for now i dont care anyway becouse my hand is broken so i cant play (look at signature)
One more thing. Here are the orgininal recomended specs of gta3:
CPU: 800 MHz
RAM: 128 MB
GPU with 32 MB RAM
The Xperia Play passes that easily. But maybe this is not compareable to the Android Version.

For starters the iphone 4 is also.a dual core device, the gpu in the tegra II is called ultra low power because it uses less power to run (batteries) than other GPU's not because it's less powerfull.

The Iphone 4 is definetly not dualcore. It has a Singelcore Samsung CPU with 1 Ghz and a PowerVR SGX535. And about tegra 2 yes i know that is the real mening of the name but it actually is less powerfull than other gpu's Or not more powerfull than gpu's of singelcore devices if you want it that way.
have they said anything about button mapping for bluetooth pads maybe we could use chainfire 3d if tegra. Just like could use play controls on riptide before play version.

Been looking forward to this.
i wonder when and which version
http://www.xperiablog.net/2011/10/15/grand-theft-auto-heading-to-xperia-play/
As a former owner of an iPod, iPhone and iPad, I fear the game will seriously blow on the small-screen iDevices.
Seriously, 3.5-inch screen + touch-screen controls and your fingers blocking one third of the screen? What a pleasurable experience... NOT.
I would like to try the iPad version though, the on-screen controls are not that much a problem there because of the big screen. Anyway, I suspect they WILL port the game to Xperia Play sooner or later, I mean why not when the device is MADE to play these kinds of games? Some graphical compromises will probably have to be made though.
This is such a pain! :/ Hoping someone will upload an apk somewhere, I reckon Rockstar have lost alot of money here. If the iPhone 4 can run it the PLAY can easily.

There has been absolutely nothing to indicate they will.
EA has been putting out exclusive titles for the Play (and giving them away for free), There are other devs that have Play exclusives as well. Its not being ignored at all.
Its ONE game... bfd....
I believe Rockstar said somehwere that it is not the final list of the phones.
If you dont know what this app is, its a Nintendo DS emulator for android phones that was never taken out of BETA.Since this has been removed from the market i think all development has stopped, i think this is a real shame because it has a lot of potential especially with higher and higher specs on android phones.
There are probably similar threads already but i think the subject has run dry and i want to keep the idea of such a cool app in android owners minds.
I was wondering if any developer would take up the job of either starting fresh or adding onto NDS4Droid app. I would but i have no clue where to start when it comes to coding so i cant be much help
The reason i have posted this into the xperia play section is because i would hope that eventually it would be controller optimised.
This is my second thing i have posted in the forums so sorry if i have done anything wrong. Feel free to correct me on anything
+1
This was just the kinda thing I was hoping for, seeing all the groundwork on it going to waste is just a shame :/ Hopefully an awesome Dev will pick it up !
Do you people understand why this project never got very far?
It was because of the hardware capability of our phones. It was not enough for a fully functional DS Emulator which is why development had stopped.
And even if someone did want to continue the Development of this for some unknown reason, then it is impossible because the source code never got released.
The hardware is stron enough, NDS is compareable to N64 but much lower resolution.
Sent from my R800i using XDA App
Try TigerNDS it supports physical button mapping
http://apps.tigerplay.info/
Also I do belive that with enough optimisations NDS emultion could run full (or near full) speed on the xperia play. Obviously you need to get a talented developer with enough free time on thier hand to actuall bother doing this.
If a new emu never gets made then we could use this current one with future hardware when it gets powerfull enough but thats still a good couple of years away and also none of the current NDS emulators have audio emulation...
Of course the hardware is good enough for the ds we are getting psp games soon which are better graphics than the ds.....

That is because the those games are direct ports and not emulated. Emulators require like x3+ hardware of the actual console which is why some PSX/N64 Games still lag because they are using "Emulation".
The games will be ports and not ran by an emulator so just remember that
NDS has like a 66mhz ARM processor in it. It should be possible hardware wise, but not so ideal in the physical side of things. Showing two 3" screens on one 4" screen will look awkward, especially since the screens are supposed to be one on top of the other.

I was hoping someone would bring this fact to light.
Quality DS emulation is definitely possible. I'm waiting on one of these NDS emulators to offer the option to only emulate/display one of it's screens. A lot of the times, the second screen could be completely ignored, and that'd drastically improve performance.
All I'd really want an NDS emu for is Phantasy Star Zero... that alongside many other DS games can be played using only one screen.
i'm sure that xperia play can support it . it's looooooooong time that i hope to see update for tiger NDS or NDS4droid
i'm really really eager to help someone ( donate ) want to start this project . i've sent sooooo many mails to tiger , but no answer .

I already got PSP games Loco Roco Midnight Carnival in my Play, im sure this game is not a port, it run with Playstation Pocket just like Crash Bandicoot and PSXPERIA converted PSX games, only different by some software coding because it failed while i try to extract it with PSXPERIA.
PSP had better graphic than NDS, im pretty sure Xperia Play have more than enough power to run the game.

I don't know if this is enough but you can easily convert the dex file to jar and then decompile the jar file to view the source of the emulator.

Sweet, keep them all emus coming to the XP!
That is great news (for the future). Unfortunately, given the state of Saturn emulation, I doubt we'll be able to enjoy it on our current Xperia Plays.
Saturn emulation seems to be quite CPU intensive, much more so than the PS1.
However it is great to know that the emulator is being worked on at the moment, because it may very well be usable on the next version of the Xperia Play.

From what I have read the reason for such difficulty with the SS is that it has 2 CPUs working togetherm completely independant and seperate. So while its easy to program for 1 CPU its a lot mroe intense to get the sofrware to work as 2 CPUs, that also a reason why most games didnt look that good on the SS as most devs at that time were not good enough or didnt want to take the time to try to use both CPUs in a game, especially considering how much cheaper and more popular the PS1 was in comparison....... I have read that in power terms if the SS was coded at its max with full hardware being used it would be much more powerful then the PS1, but thats all dust news now, 15 years.....anyway, looking forward to this.... I still play mt SS to this day but the prospects of one day playing the games on my phone.... even if its NOT the XP gives me awesome vibes...
GL released a teaser photo of an upcoming game running off the Unreal engine.
https://www.facebook.com/gameloft/app_385139164862884
owhwhhhhh sh1t . . .that engine is usual use to make game for the consol , :good: step by gameloft
Isn't nova 3 on the unreal engine? Or I'm just stupid
Sent from my R800i using Tapatalk 2
Nope, Nova 3 used their in house engine which is pretty damn good looking and had amazing compatibility across different generations of phones. I highly doubt the Unreal games will be accessible for anything but high end phones even though we have proof the engine works on the Play, I would not say it works well or even meets Gameloft's poor standards. Dungeon Defenders suffered constant lag in anything but the first two levels and nearly cooked my phone while draining battery two times faster than any other game I've played on my Play. Anyways, not a huge deal to me as gamepad support has been abysmal in their last few games that I've bought (Nova 3 was **** awful and the final straw IMO) and the terrible support coupled with game-breaking bugs and little to no hope for updates makes me completely apathetic towards their upcoming lineup regardless of any miracles like device and gamepad support.

Nope, some journalists thought the game would be on the Unreal 3 engine but they were mistaken and Gameloft cleared this up pre-launch. Any talk of it afterwards was by uninformed people who hadn't heard (or for some reason believed) the clarification.
By the way, just to show the extent of how much misinformation there is regarding the engine I will quote the wikipedia page for NOVA (1 under the sequels tab)
"N.O.V.A. 3 was released on the App Store, also developed and published by Gameloft. It added new features such as 2-man cars in multiplayer and updated graphics after working with Unreal."
I know wikipedia isn't reputable but a lot of people check for information at wikipedia first and it tends to be pretty uncommon for such large mistakes to be found within a wikipedia page.
Here's a quote from IGN: "A Gameloft spokesperson also confirmed that N.O.V.A. 3 is not running on Epic's Unreal Engine as originally rumored, but like previous N.O.V.A. titles is powered by Gameloft's own original engine."
And if anyone has played NOVA 3 on their Play, it is very clearly using the same engine as Modern Combat 3.
the game will run like crap on the xplay, look at dungeon defenders wich is unreal engine based aswell...
The better idea would be to use the unity engine like madfire games does.
I just hope the Xperia PLAY can cope with Gameloft's unreal engine.
Shouldn't be a problem right ??

It will be a problem. The Unreal Engine even when running at its weakest was not fast enough to run Dungeon Defenders properly. Dungeon Defenders was released to garner excitement for the Play but it becomes clear after the first two levels that the phone cannot handle the game properly. Even gameloft isn't stupid enough to release a game running at an average of 20 fps; sure, they'll release a game with broken multiplayer, broken levels, and terrible controls but the Unreal Engine is not nearly as scalable as their old in house engine. I talk about this a bit more a few posts back.
Hope not... As said, their own engine is great (except the crappy pad support...).
They should have changed to unity.

Enjoy:good:
Looks like the game has some influence from Darksiders.
I don't give up hope that they will release it for our phone. Look at Infinity Blade series on ios.
That game runs on an Iphone 4 and looks great. Besides that, Gameloft can't ignore the large user base
which doesn't have a high end device.
Correct. And I think it will be some action game or RPG - hope they will optimize it for Play users (98% it's possible, cause every their big title has it ), cause Adreno 205 (so like UNCUT88RAW said little higher - most of Android users, at least not high end) is too good and too heavy used graphic chip, they will lose 70% of customers.
In my opinion - it's coming for us . I'm thinkin if they start from this game their plans for 2012 - they're trying to -> http://blog.gameloft.com/index.php/2012/07/19/inside-gameloft/
That looks really good ! I think Gameloft will release it for our Xperia PLAY's
