[APP][1.5+] Webkey (ROOT REQUIRED), remote control your phone

Using this program you can control your phone from any browser. It requires a rooted Android phone.
* You can click and type on the phone (we inject touch events to the touch device and create a new HID for typing),
* get screenshots (copied from the framebuffer device) in jpeg and png, record images in sequence
* start phone calls (it uses '/bin/system/service' from android)

* DynDNS support (it's a dinamic DNS service, after you register at dyndns.org, your phone will have an address like: myphone.homeip.net, this only works if you can reach your phone using its IP address)
* if your 3g internet provider blocks the incoming connection to your phone, then you cannot connect using its IP address or DynDNS, but you can connect through our server (the phone starts the connection like GoogleTalk does)
* user admin has a random password each time, but you can add new users. The connection is not encrypted, we are planning to use https instead of http
* opensource (it is licensed under General Public License)
* most of the functions uses only C++ part, which has very low memory footprint and almost no CPU use in idle.

Why? Everything works as listed. It's opensource, you can compile it for yourself.

If there is a demand for this, we will hire a server with a faster connection. It seems like all the 3G internet providers blocks the incoming connection to the phone in USA, so we have to redirect the packets through our server. In Europe the situation is better, and we can connect to the phone directly.
Webkey listens on all interfaces, so if you manage to set up a VPN, it will work.

I know for AT&T unless you have the laptop connect type package, ie: APN is isp.cingular, this is true. So nearly all AT&T mobile phones will have this limitation.
I like that you've worked around it using this method, I think I'll have to give this a try myself.
Also sounds like something a business might be interested in having, but their own server.. Is the communications secure between the phone and server?

There is nothing new about this topic. Virtual Private Network is made for this, it's secure and everyone can have an own server (although it's not so easy to set it up, but most of the firmwares support it on the phone). There are several other solutions, for example ssh reverse port forwarding (-R option), or socat can create a tunnel device as well. None of these solutions were good for us, because I didn't want to mess up anything on the phone like creating new network interface, or maintain a ssh tunnel.
Our solution is simple. The phone creates a TCP connection to the server and listen on that. It reopens it when it closed. Whenever a user connects to our site from a browser, the server searches for the appropriate socket, and connects them.
It's not secure yet, but I'll finish https when I have time. After that the connection will be secure between the browser and the phone (which is better than securing the connection between the phone and the server).

I ran this before on 2.1, but now Webkey won't run on my Evo running Froyo. It just hangs with black screen on start. I am running the rooted stock 2.2 ROM and other apps requiring root run fine. Any ideas?
Also, I'm a developer and want to add an option to select an http port to listen on. I'm pretty sure http will work fine over another port, like 8080 (over Sprint without using your proxy server), and I wanted to mod the code (and submit to you) if it works. Is it obvious how to build the full solution from the C and Java sources? Just Java I've done, but not built an app requiring the NDK, yet.

So if I understand this correctly, this relies on a server at some fixed location, as well as an apk on the phone.
Is the server source available so that I could modify the APK to point to my own server? It seems that the sources you provide are only to rebuild the APK, and that a user would have to trust your server.

At start the Java code tests whether it needs to extract files. I assume that something changed on Froyo. Do you have a directory /data/data/com.webkey after install? Or does it put it on the SD card?
There is a function for changing port. You can do it from the Java gui.
For the compiling (under linux):
I used "Customized Android NDK r3 with enabled support of C++ exceptions, RTTI and Standard C++ Library", see

and downloaded the precompiled binaries. Please find a build.sh in c.zip (I uploaded it right now). It uses my directory structure, but I hope you can find out how it works. There are some bash tricks with grep and sed to generate the menu in every html. The README.txt might help as well. Feel free to ask about anything.

In some countries you don't have to use the server (the internet providers don't block), but yes, you are right. The server code is a python script and I need to check it (again) for security leaks before opening it and ask permission from the other developer. I would say this will happen this weekend. (However, the protocol is simple. It couldn't be simpler.)
There are some other solutions for this problem:
- If you set up a Virtual Private Network on the phone (I never did that, but reverse ssh port forwarding worked for me), then you don't have to use our server.
- I hope in the next release there will be https, which encodes the data between the phone and the browser (after that you if you check the certificate then you can trust to any server). I try to finish it in a week.
I believe the publication of a program like this needs extra care because of its reputation. Before https there won't be a Market version, where you can change the server address (because of security reason). Of course, if you would like it, I'm happy to send you an apk where you can change the server address, or you can compile it for yourself.

Nice Now you have to start the camera program and watch the screenshot . I'll check what can I do with the camera device from C++.

This is a great app. I love how you can upload and download from your sd card! The remote control is a little slow over 3g, but very promising. Thanks

Well... There is an option in AjaXplorer, which downloads several files in a zip archive (even directories), but I was lazy, I didn't implement it in C++ (although the zip library was already there because of the png library). I don't promise to finish it in the following weeks, but I'll do it sometime.

What does this app do?
It adds a second screen after you entered your password, asking for a pin. This pin can be generated by your mobile phone and only used once.
The screen will open everytime you login, even after Standby/Hibernate/LockScreen.
Who should use it?
Paranoid people like me, especially these that own a laptop. If someone gets your windowspassword via keylogger or phishing, he still can't login.
In addition you could use the Windows auto-login (loads up all your autostarts) and would be still required to enter a code.
Who shouldn't use it?
People who are working with restricted rights (no Admin/root rights!), as these won't get past the login screen ;-) (might be fixed in final).
People who have multiple accounts on their computer, as every user is required to enter the same pin (will be fixed in final).
People who think this adds an extreme amount of security. Even though it does work in failsafe mode, there are some ways to get around it. If the "bad guy" has physical access to your computer, this is almost as (un-)safe as the Windowspassword.
Installation
Extract all files from the zip to a folder, e.g. C:\IdislikeWindows\. Then run installtion.exe, make sure you run the installer with administrator rights. You need an internet connection for that, so the progamm can generate a QR Code, that you then scan with your phone (apk attached below).
After entering your first generated key you're good to go.
Make sure that you never remove or rename that folder or any files in it!
Removal
Just double click on Uninstall.exe. If you used the graphical login before, select that option. Make sure you run the uninstaller with administrator rights.
What works doesn't work (yet)
- Impress with a fancy UI
- It won't work on Windows 9x (won't be supported)
- Users can still Alt+Tab / Win+R
- Users can still open Taskmanager (this is done for debugging)
- Synchronize if you have to phones
- Multiple Accounts
- Non-admin Accounts
- Phone App stores only one passphrase
... and much more I guess.
Tested on
- Windows XP
For safety reasons, the Windows part won't work after 2nd of July. But I will upload a new version until then
So go ahead, test this app and report many bugs I bet there are a lot. In addition I'm curious if it works on Win7 and Vista as well.
If something goes wrong, you can always start uninstall.exe with your taskmanager.

One question: does it work over RDP? I have a computer a work (encased in a rack in a renderfarm) and I work by log in with Remote Desktop Connection.

It probably won't work, but I will try it today. And I know there is a way to trigger it after someone started a remote session. I guess I will have it coded today or tomorrow

I uploaded a zip, replace the service.exe with the one in your folder and try it. As I posted above, it is not tested, so I don't know if its actually working ;-)

I need a new app!

I am hoping someone can help me, since I am having a problem. The problem is that I am bored with the current "regular" section of apps on the market. I want to find something that is useful (even revolutionary!) but I cant find anything. I dont care about games, photo editing apps, music apps, "juice savers", or any of the other crap available on the market. I am looking for a really cool developer type app that typical users dont care about. My phone is rooted so basically the sky is the limit. Does anyone have any suggestions for me??

I wouldnt be opposed to writing my own, but I am looking for inspiration first. Thats why I want to see some of the innovative apps out there. The problem is there is nothing particularly exciting, from what I can find at least. I am sure there are people who have developed something cool I just need to find it!

Im currently doing some learning ARM/x86 assembly for embedded stuff. Im also currently working with the android kernel. Sometimes i like to sit with my phone instead of a laptop here is a list of apps and stuff i use on the phone to make things go smooth.
(market) droidedit pro - this is the best easiest code editor ive used so far, its light it supports a ton of languages and has sftp and ssh command support. The ssh makes it easy to build stuff on your main remote machine.
(market)x-plore - pretty sweet file manager. it is a double tree view that can connect to the lan ftp and picassa. It also has total root access. I can basically work with any files even on typically read only directorys.
(market)ideterminal - basically the android sdk on your phone along with java compilers and ton of command line goodies.
Add a debian chroot to your phone this opens up so many possibilitys like to vnc into an x server on the phone and compile natively without the hassle of small screen no keyboard.
ssh combined with dropbox is also your friend.

I also mess around with embedded ARM devices for fun. My current project is FreePBX (Asterisk VoIP system) that I installed on a SheevaPlug "plug computer". At the moment I am trying to figure out the best way for me to incorporate my Android devices with that platform. The two apps I like am currently using a lot are:
1) FING. Its basically a network analyzing program that tells you about all devices attached to a network. If you are familiar with the older PC program called [email protected] this is essentially the Android version of that.
2) ConnectBot. A fairly straight forward SSH/Telnet client with a few extras.
I am really on the lookout for these kinds of apps. If you can think of others that might be interesting I would love to know. We have someone similar interests so I am curious what else you like.

I actually had downloaded fing but it wont work on my phone i have no idea what the deal is when i from command line or any program need to ping i get an error like ICMP operation failed, i dont have a problem with any networking software i.e ssh, VNC, remote web desktop (this is a cool toy, makes sms on pc simple also).
Oh ya there is also a dynamic DNS app to so you can use something like no-ip.com and to get a static host name for your phone, for free. Like mike.no-ip.com would connect you to your phone from anywhere, the client program on the phone updates the DNS server that provides your dynamic DNS name. I guess the app is generic and works with most if not all dynamic dns hosts!
Im not really into voip, i just havent ever done anything with it. although i only have 300 minutes and unlimited data so voip may be a good idea, i just dont know any free service.

Which DYDNS app are you using? I have tried a few and none work. Which carrier do you have?

[APP] X-Link - Zero Setup File Transfer

The app I would like to present is called X-Link and is intended to make file transfers between devices (Android or PC) easy.
It's using multicasts to find other clients within the same WiFi network.
So no setup ist needed.
In addition to the Android app there is also a Java based PC client available.
This client has been tested on Linux and Windows but might work on other configurations.

You can not only transfer files between PC and Android but also between Android devices.
This is beta software, so there are still bugs.

Testing and how you can help
Multicast test
To test if your network is able to deal with multicast messages you can do the following test:
1. Download the file MulticastSender.jar and MulticastReceiver.jar.
2. On one PC start the MulticastSender.jar and on another the MulticastReceiver.jar.
The sender sends screenshots. If you see the screenshots on the receiver's side, multicasts are working for you.
If not, X-Link will not work.
If this works but X-Link doesn't it's likely that there is a problem concerning timeouts within X-Link.
In this case, please send me a mail (xlink [at] fun2code.de).
If sharing on Android does not work
Sharing does not seem to be working in some apps.
If you encounter such a problem, please download the app XLinkDebug.apk and install it.
Use sharing as you normally would with X-Link but select X-Link Debug instead.
On execution the app will copy the information needed for me to fix the issue to the clipboard.

Was your phone on a WiFi network?

obviously, yes it is

The devices have to be connected to the same WiFi network and the network has to support multicasts (which usually should be the case).
If you are on a weak WiFi signal it might take more than one try to find other devices.
My test devices are:
Galaxy Nexus, Nexus One and Notion Ink Adam

i really do not have knowledge about the Multicast thing, but my Wifi Signal is good. And i used SAMBA and other wifi file sharing apps and they all worked using the same wifi.
And clicked RELOAD many times but i cant see any device in the popdown menu..

Multicast is different from TCP connections, so this can't be compared.

Wow, it actually worked in HTC Desire!! Great app!! Now I can transfer files w/o any cables!! Need sometime to allow 2 devices to connect though..

I don't know anything about Multicast, but my Mac is on the same Wifi network as my Galaxy Nexus, and the Mac couldn't see the Nexus. I tried "Reload" several times.

Works on Windows 7 64-bit and a Galaxy Nexus. Cool app, really like it!
My only suggestions would either be to get rid of the menu and put it all in the "drag file here" area, or maybe some slightly simpler graphics. They come off a little cheesy.
Other than that, it works well.
Next steps would be to keep app closed, but still have access to dropping files. Root access? I'm not sure how it would work.

App and client work seamlessly with windows 7 and tmo sgsII.
Only thing I notice is inability to share pics directly from my phone's gallery. I use my file explorer and it works fine.

Make sure you have x-link at the front of your screen (on your phone) seems it disappears after being inactive and you'll get the upload error problem. I am of course speaking from experience as I just fought with that, bringing x-link back to the front seemed to solve it.

The X-Link app has to be active on the Android device to be visible to others and for the transfer to work.
If you close the app during data transfer, the transfer will break.
I'm glad that it worked for some of you. I'll do some debugging next week.
Hope things will improve...

For does of you having problems seeing other devices.
You can do the following test.
Run the PC client from console: java -jar XLinkClient.jar
Then try to detect you PC from the Android device.
You should see an output similar to this on the console:
Connecting: 192.168.0.198/4500
If an Exception occurs there was a problem when connecting back to the Android device.
If no output is visible, it's likely that multicasts are not working within your network.

Might help newer users who want to try out your app if you put a download link on your web site or here in this thread. I found your app through xda article and didn't realize that I had to type the link out verbatim with 'XLinkClient.jar' having correct capitalization lol. Took me a minute to figure out, so newer people might just give up without trying it. Just fyi ;-)

[GUIDE] RemoteApps Desktop Apps

Ok! I keep hoping I'll see some neat way to get my desktop apps on my Surface on here! However, I found a pretty cool solution myself!
First I set up remote desktop with my windows 7 PC and my surface. That was cool. It felt clunky and slow. However, I looked up how to do RemoteApps. I thought it looked complicated but worth it. While stumbling around I found a utility that basically sets it up for you!
1. First setup remote desktop access and free the port for remote desktop. I will not describe it here.
2. I used this utility! Kim Knight's remoteapp tool. Google it. XDA won't let me post a link cause I've never posted before. I just wanted to share my findings.
3. I now can use Utorrent, Photoshop and even my silly Pidgin! Eventually I'm going to use Maya! It works great with hardly any lag! The only lag I get is when I'm saving to my tablet vs the remote computer. I haven't been able to get a browser to work yet but I have invested that much time into it. I'm sure other people will figure it out. Whats cool is Utorrent will save to my tablet. Yah download speeds are slower but expected!

This is indeed a great find! I've played with RemoteApps before on the server editions of Windows, but it's quite tricky to get it to work with one server and not a huge enterprise! Being able to use it in this way is just great. Plus we can probably work out an XML file that will populate the apps into the RemoteApp control panel / metro RDP client automatically.
However, I'm having a problem with this on Win 8 (as a host). It seems to all setup ok, but upon connecting (from Win8 or Surface RT) after credentials, cert etc are accepted the RDP client just vanishes. I see Kim Knight's page says it works with Win 8 CP - has anyone tested it with Win 8 RTM? If MS have broken this with Win8 I think I'll have to setup a Win7 box/VM just for this purpose!

I had issues getting it working on Windows 7 pro at work, so i swapped up to Enterprise and it worked great. I haven't tested it at home yet off my system. I haven't used this but for my home fileserver, but you can take it a step further and patch RDP to work for multiple concurrent connections.

With concurrent connections, can you remote app and use desktop still with same login?
Edit: Tried it myself and it works. So now I can remote app in while I'm still logged in my desktop and it won't boot me off, allowing me to use them simultaneously with the same login.

I can confirm this works with Windows 8 Enterprise, but not Pro. There is, of course, no Ultimate. This is all a bit of a shame as I can't use RemoteApp on my primary home PC, which also runs Media Centre (which can't be added into W8 Enterprise).

Mine keeps booting me off... Asks me to sign out the other user before logging in. Any tips on how you were able to achieve that?

Did you install the concurrent RDP patch?
I installed it on Windows 7 Ultimate and I can use remote apps on my Surface and use desktop at the same time.

Guilde posted for remote apps on Windows 8 ENT

RemoteApp is just a remote desktop connection to a specific application, it's been around since Windows XP SP3. It's also how XP mode in Windows 7 does its magic.

I know what remote desktop is! But remoteapp - seamless windowed app on client - is pretty impressive.

The remote app program does work under Windows 8, but you need to run it as administrator otherwise it's crashtastic.
After that it works perfectly.

Hey all, if anyone can help me get remote desktop working on my surface it would be greatly appreciated. If a developer out there could set up an app to get this done easier, could be a moneymaker, I know id pay for it.
After scouring youtube, and the web, I found a lot of different walkthroughs on how to set up a home pc as a remote server. Unfortunately, I really don't know what im doing and cant figure out why it isn't working. Im running WinXP Pro SP3 on a few year old laptop (I bought the thing during the Vista debacle, and down graded to xp for software reasons - I am an architect and needed my AutoCAD and various graphic intensive programs)
These are the steps that I have tried, all to no avail
- I go to control panel, System, Remote, turn on Remote Desktop.
- open Linksys router configuration, and try to set up Port Forwarding
- this is where it really gets confusing for me, and I don't think that I am doing it correct. I know I need to open the port, I go to Applications and Gaming, and enter RDP, Im not sure of the port number, and what else to do here
- cmd, ipconfig - I enter all information - ip address, DNS, Gateway, etc?
I then found out that in order to really get this working, I needed a static IP address - Im not sure how to do this, but I found a couple posts, and a youtube video suggesting using DynDNS to get this working as a host. I signed up, and am still not able to connect.
Any help would be appreciated - Im not great with this stuff.....I never really played with networking, before....Please help me get my Surface working. Its possible im not entering the address correctly in the Surface Remote Desktop App.

If the surface is on your home wifi, it should be able to rdp (remote desktop) to the XP system no problem.
Only need the router ip mapping / translation if using the Surface outside the house on another Internet connection
