[GUIDE] RemoteApps Desktop Apps - Microsoft Surface

Ok! I keep hoping I'll see some neat way to get my desktop apps on my Surface on here! However, I found a pretty cool solution myself!
First I set up remote desktop with my windows 7 PC and my surface. That was cool. It felt clunky and slow. However, I looked up how to do RemoteApps. I thought it looked complicated but worth it. While stumbling around I found a utility that basically sets it up for you!
1. First setup remote desktop access and free the port for remote desktop. I will not describe it here.
2. I used this utility! Kim Knight's remoteapp tool. Google it. XDA won't let me post a link cause I've never posted before. I just wanted to share my findings.
3. I now can use Utorrent, Photoshop and even my silly Pidgin! Eventually I'm going to use Maya! It works great with hardly any lag! The only lag I get is when I'm saving to my tablet vs the remote computer. I haven't been able to get a browser to work yet but I have invested that much time into it. I'm sure other people will figure it out. Whats cool is Utorrent will save to my tablet. Yah download speeds are slower but expected!

Nice find

This is indeed a great find! I've played with RemoteApps before on the server editions of Windows, but it's quite tricky to get it to work with one server and not a huge enterprise! Being able to use it in this way is just great. Plus we can probably work out an XML file that will populate the apps into the RemoteApp control panel / metro RDP client automatically.
However, I'm having a problem with this on Win 8 (as a host). It seems to all setup ok, but upon connecting (from Win8 or Surface RT) after credentials, cert etc are accepted the RDP client just vanishes. I see Kim Knight's page says it works with Win 8 CP - has anyone tested it with Win 8 RTM? If MS have broken this with Win8 I think I'll have to setup a Win7 box/VM just for this purpose!

I had issues getting it working on Windows 7 pro at work, so i swapped up to Enterprise and it worked great. I haven't tested it at home yet off my system. I haven't used this but for my home fileserver, but you can take it a step further and patch RDP to work for multiple concurrent connections.
http://www.redmondpie.com/remote-de...-easy-way-with-this-native-windows-rdp-patch/

RemoteApp Tool requires:
•
Microsoft .Net Framework 3.5
•
Remote Desktop 7 enabled on host
•
Remote Desktop 7 client on client
•
Windows 7 Enterprise or Ultimate (or Vista Pro or XPproSP3 - untested)

With concurrent connections, can you remote app and use desktop still with same login?
Edit: Tried it myself and it works. So now I can remote app in while I'm still logged in my desktop and it won't boot me off, allowing me to use them simultaneously with the same login.

I can confirm this works with Windows 8 Enterprise, but not Pro. There is, of course, no Ultimate. This is all a bit of a shame as I can't use RemoteApp on my primary home PC, which also runs Media Centre (which can't be added into W8 Enterprise).

Mine keeps booting me off... Asks me to sign out the other user before logging in. Any tips on how you were able to achieve that?

Did you install the concurrent RDP patch?
I installed it on Windows 7 Ultimate and I can use remote apps on my Surface and use desktop at the same time.

I have a post up on how to get this working on Window 8.

Brilliant. Worked like a charm. No idea how, without a server running the remote app role, but it does.

RemoteApp is just a remote desktop connection to a specific application, it's been around since Windows XP SP3. It's also how XP mode in Windows 7 does its magic.

I know what remote desktop is! But remoteapp - seamless windowed app on client - is pretty impressive.

The remote app program does work under Windows 8, but you need to run it as administrator otherwise it's crashtastic.
After that it works perfectly.
One other thing is that you should apply the patch to allow multiple co-current remote desktop sessions to work on your machine, here's the patch... http://www.tenniswood.co.uk/technol...current-remote-desktop-sessions-in-windows-8/

That's not legal.

i would love to get this working on windows 8 pro. does anyone know of a way to get it working?

remote desktop help
Hey all, if anyone can help me get remote desktop working on my surface it would be greatly appreciated. If a developer out there could set up an app to get this done easier, could be a moneymaker, I know id pay for it.
After scouring youtube, and the web, I found a lot of different walkthroughs on how to set up a home pc as a remote server. Unfortunately, I really don't know what im doing and cant figure out why it isn't working. Im running WinXP Pro SP3 on a few year old laptop (I bought the thing during the Vista debacle, and down graded to xp for software reasons - I am an architect and needed my AutoCAD and various graphic intensive programs)
These are the steps that I have tried, all to no avail
- I go to control panel, System, Remote, turn on Remote Desktop.
- open Linksys router configuration, and try to set up Port Forwarding
- this is where it really gets confusing for me, and I don't think that I am doing it correct. I know I need to open the port, I go to Applications and Gaming, and enter RDP, Im not sure of the port number, and what else to do here
- cmd, ipconfig - I enter all information - ip address, DNS, Gateway, etc?
I then found out that in order to really get this working, I needed a static IP address - Im not sure how to do this, but I found a couple posts, and a youtube video suggesting using DynDNS to get this working as a host. I signed up, and am still not able to connect.
Any help would be appreciated - Im not great with this stuff.....I never really played with networking, before....Please help me get my Surface working. Its possible im not entering the address correctly in the Surface Remote Desktop App.
Thank You!!

If the surface is on your home wifi, it should be able to rdp (remote desktop) to the XP system no problem.
Only need the router ip mapping / translation if using the Surface outside the house on another Internet connection

Remote Desktop Mobile vs. Vista SP2

Hi Devs,
since the upgrade to Vista SP 2 I am not able to access my PC any more via remote desktop mobile.
Accessing it via my notebook works well both from LAN and WAN side.
But as soon as I try to access it via Remote Desktop Mobile on my touch HD or my TG01 I receive a connetion error and have no idea why.
I would be very happy if you could help me to find a solution for that due to I really like to boot my PC from anywhere in the world an access my sweet home desktop.
Thanks and with best Regards

*Bump*
die_Leuchte,
you figure this out yet? I finally upgraded to sp2(vista home pre) and I ran into the same thing. Got it working again on my xp laptop but dont really want to fire up wifi router to connect through rdp. It's driving me nuts, MS making things better once again!
Can anyone help bring rdp back to life after sp2?
I believe you have to change a system setting on the Vista PC to allow previous versions of RDP to connect. Don't remember where the setting is, but I'm pretty sure that is what it is.
Also Home versions do not support RDP hosting. Only Pro or business or higher.
Thanks Hannigan, I figured the same as well. FYI RDP does work on Vista home with a small hack, but not since sp2. There is an sp2 hack but it only allows my laptop(winXP) to connect and not my mobile. I need to find the setting on the vista pc which tells it to ignore the rdp version connecting to it. If someone could post this it would really help!!!
ok what I figured out so far is, that you need to configure the rdp host to allow clients which does not have Network Level Authenticationnetwork to connect as well. Due to I have Home Premuim with a rdp hack I do not have the menu to enable cientas without nla to connect and I did not find another solution so far (for example a reg key).
i found some info on the registry keys but I don't think I can just plug them in and get it working. I'll keep trying and post anything I find.
If you need to configure it to allow lower versions to connect, it's here.

Thats exactly what is missing in Vista home premium
And thats why we search for another solution to allow any kind of clients to connect.

remote desktop doesn't work

I've got a pc with vista home premium sp2 and remote all enabled. router is upnp on also. no firewall or anything on vista pc.
tp2 vzw. in remote desktop on phone i put in correct vista ip and correct username and password and hit connect. immediately it says it can't connect. all connections are fine from pcs or macs to the vista pc. the phone is wifi on same lan etc and works otherwise. I don't get it one bit and would so love some help please.
Thanks so much.
Give logmein a try. I've always had troubles with remote desktop
logmein is web only.
it works though. I've used it before quite easily. There are other solutions out there as well, just visit google or search in the general ppcgeeks and xda forums
Remote desktop is all I'm asking for help on as it comes with the phone and is what I have available to me, plus it's local and that is better performance.
Have you tried the remote desktop from a PC first to verify that your home settings are correct?
I have RDP working on my Sprint TP2, and I've never had an issue with it on the Mogul or Diamond.
Are you entering the local or public IP address in the remote desktop program?
VNC
I didn't have any problems with the remote desktop on mine at all. I quit using it when I found a vnc viewer though. VNC is nice because it doesn't mess with windows logins and keeps your display without dumping to a login screen. Great for media centers.
It sounds to me like you are having a security issue. I don't what security features the WM remote desktop viewer uses, but your Vista settings might not like them.
nmap your vista box - probably your antivirus/malware/spyware/firewall suite is blocking it.
You might also try checking to see if NLA is required upon login. I'm fairly confident that the current Remote Desktop mobile clients do not support it due to the need for kerberos or certificate authentication between the client (phone) and server (pc).
Check out "Remote Settings" in the "System" control panel item, and make sure it doesn't have the option selected to require NLA.
Thanks guys.
If you re read my first post I answer all yer questions already.
Everything works from pcs or macs. No software on vista to block anything.
The only thing not working is the remote desktop on the tp2.
I'm not on my Vista box right now, but there is a setting for the security level requirement. Try lowering it:

I'm having the exact same problem. Funny thing though, it worked once, then I tried again and haven't been able to get it to work anymore. I have tried most of the roms and I'm still unable to get it to work again. I keep getting the message "Cannot connect with the current connection settings. To change your connection settings, tap Settings."
It's already set to allow anything.
hjmmmmmmmmm
Funny thing is I have the exact same problem. It works sometimes and it doesn't other.
I found a fix, even though it's kind of lame. Load up Internet Explorer. That's it. Then go to remote desktop. It should work just fine.
Why this is I have no idea but hope I helped some people out there.
I opened IE and tried RDC and it still doesn't work. Gives the error immediately.
This is really insane. I totally don't get it and really need remote desktop on my phone to work. grr.
I don't have a clue what if anything could be blocking this if anything is blocking. I connect fine from my macbook pro and other pcs, just not the phone. And vista is set to accept anything remote. I'm not running a firewall or anything on Vista either. Built in vista firewall is off too.
The only versions of windows vista that support remote desktop are Vista Business and Vista Ultimate! If you have anything lower than Business which includeds Home edition and Home Premium, Microsoft disabled the Remote Desktop feature in these OS's so that is why it is not allowing you to connect.....
Do search for it on google and you'll find a bunch more info on it.

Ya know, if you read the original post, he said that this was something that worked normally or used to work, but now has stopped working. Has nothing to do with his desktop O/S. I too am having this same problem. To get to a pc inside my network, I have to force it to build the vpn connect first by going to a lame ie page on the inside network. Once that has happened, then I can use the remote app and specify a pc to get to and it finds it. This use to work just fine on my 6800.
I know ms disabled Rdc in home premium but I enabled it which is why I'm able to connect from pcs and macs. But not from phone.
I just connected to my xp pc from phone last night just fine and I never even tried before. So on the vista I ain't got a clue.

Remote Desktop

Has anyone been able to get remote desktop to xp home working? I can vnc to my ubuntu desktop but cant connect to my xp netbook. Tried tightvnc and ultra vnc on the netbook but neither worked for me. I could be setting the server up wrong though.
Thanks

Hi,
If you really mean "remote desktop" to WinXP Home, I don't think XP Home has terminal services (only XP Pro does, I think).
You can try the pocketcloud free trial on market. That supports both VNC and RDP protocols, but the trial version only allows you to set up one computer at a time.
Jim
I guess remote desktop viewing would the more generic term.
My understanding is that tight VNC and ultra VNC both add this functionality to windows XP home. I've got two VNC apps that work well on the gtab as viewers (i can remote view my ubuntu desktop). It was easy to set up, but then again ubuntu comes native with VNC support out of the box.
Just wondering if anyone has had experience running TightVNC or UltraVNC servers on XP successfully.
VNC has no encryption, keep in mind (password and data flow in the clear). There are ways to add encryption, but it may not be a free solution.
I used to add VNC to Windows some years back, but layered it with SSH to add the encryption layer.
I use xtralogic remote desktop. Seems to work pretty good.

I have Ultra vnc server on one of my XP Home machines, and it works fine. Maybe the XP firewall is blocking the incoming connection? You can turn off the firewall temporarily to test.

Xtralogic remote desktop is the best rdp software for android. Uses the screen like a touchpad and follows the mouse.
best remote software by far is LogMeIn i love it and use it every day, not only does it work computer to computer but works very well from g tablet to my home machines, you can install the free version on the computer than get the logmein app which does cost something not sure exactly what since i got it a while back, just google search it in the market. cant hurt to buy it and try it if you dont like it just return it in 24 hours
Figured it out. Port forwarding is kind of flaky on my router and it takes it a couple trys before the setting will stick.

Best Remote PC app

Hi peoples. I am in seach of the best remote pc app. I have currently tried:
Phonemypc: Which is currently my favorite remote pc app. Navigation is easy and it has a mouse function where you can slide your finger and see the mouse move. Frame rate isnt that great but it has the function to tap into the PC/Laptops camera and view from your mobile device, you can also tap into the mic and listen.
Splashtop HD: I also tried splashtop hd which is very laggy even on fast wifi. The image is alot more crisp, but its just very dificult to use. They claim 30+ fps but I couldnt get it to work that smoothly.
what is everyone else using to control their pcs?
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
I've used splashtop with very little lag on good WiFi, and even decently on 3G. What's the upload speed on the wifi you are using your PC in?
PhoneMyPC does the job for my needs.
PhonemyPC on my phone, Teamviewer on my tablet.
Remote VNC
I am recommending Teamviewer.
HTML:
http://www.teamviewer.com
Of course on market is version for ANDROID.
I personally connect via VPN and then use the "2X" app to RDP to other servers.... With an external mouse, this combination works perfectly - just like you are sitting in front of a windows box. I use this mainly for support (I'm a unix admin by trade). Now, I never even need to open my laptop for after-hours support! By the time my laptop boots, I could have already got in and fixed the issue from my Transformer!
Wyse pocketcloud is absolutely amazing. I've been using it on my phone and tab for a long time now and never wanted to switch. Also free
Best I have used is Splashtop. I've used VNC, RAdmin, RDP, and X forwarding on various platforms and distances over the years and Splashtop has been the least laggy for me. I've been using the client included with my TF.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
Spashtop is nice, but the problem is that you need to install a client on the remote PC.... RDP is nice becuase it's automatically available on all windows systems... If you are only connecting to one PC, I guess that's not a big deal, but for professional use, it's just too much of a pain (and security issue) to install a spashtop client on a bunch of PC's....
I use the Xtralogic RDP client. It's an amazing RDP app that does absolutely everything. I've tried dozens of different RDP apps and Xtralogic beats everything I've tried hands-down. It's a steep price on the market, but I found it for next-to-nothing on a third party app site.

Absolutely - I too use SSH for chararacter-based systems... But for Windows, the X2 app (which is free) is an excellent RDP app....
I use VMWare View. It requires you to have two windows server 2008 installations to do so(one as domain controller, and one in the domain).

2x and PocketCloud Remote Desktop using VPN
I´m using 2X or PocketCloud Remote, which are working both flawlessly to connect to my Win 7 Desktop (when FW is disabled, eventhough exception for TCP 3389 is konfigured), using WLAN.
I´d like to use the apps, when i´m home by VPN (like jtrosky) but in this case, traffic from PocketCloud isn´t even arriving at my ethernet port, whereas traffic from 2X does, but the connection doesn´t establish.
Tracing on the Ethernetport on my PC with Wireshark, i see a TCP SYN-packet comming in from my Transformer, followed by a TCP connection reset-packet (RST ACK) from my PC, where there sould be SYN ACK-Packet. So the TCP 3-way-handshake doesn´t work out.
FW and other security stuff is disabled. Access to my NAS is no problem, so VPN should be the root of evil.
Anybody any ideas?
pcap-dumps attached.
THANKS!
For what it's worth, I'm going to change my RDP-app recommendation from 2X to Jump Desktop... I didn't think you could get any better than 2X (it is a great app), but Jump Desktop is even better! I *love* the fact that I can basically RDP to my remote server without even connecting to my VPN at all! It allows you to connect via the internet - as long as you load a "helper" app on the PC(s) that you want to connect to.
Works GREAT - it is now my go to app for remote connectivity!

That means, that you open a port on your router / FW, like using DYNDNS, right?
I like the idea, VPNing home and connecting to my PC from inside my LAN, - just feels more secure.

Actually, that's the nice part - with Jump Desktop, you don't need to worry about any of that stuff - you just log in to your Google account (from inside the PC helper app) and then everything is automatic! No need to mess with port forwarding, DynDNS or anything like that - it's all automatic...
They have a free version - give it a shot - I think you'll like it!
Of course, you can always still connect to your VPN and use Jump Desktop to connect "directly" to your PC if you want to go that route. But, the option to be able to connect without VPN is a nice-to-have in case VPN access is down or something like that....

Logmein for Surface RT

I know that Logmein does not have an app to support Windows RT but I was wondering if any of you great minds can make it work on this machine. I also have a Samsung Ativ 500T with Windows 8 but I want my Surface to be my daily driver. Without Logmein this cannot happen. Not all of my clients allow the port to be open for RDP and we handle a lot of sites.
I can log in with my account but when I attach to a computer (Active X script) it make me type in the words and letters and click the Send button for every action and the screen does not refresh.
Any of you know a work around or how to make this work?
Thanks in advance!
I hope this happens as well.
I've started using Team Viewer Touch on my surface. It seems to work just as well as logmein and as a bonus, it works on a LAN as well.

The problem with Team Viewer is you cannot install it on a Server for free. We handle servers on a daily basis so the Team Viewer option is not feasible unless we want to spend the $3,000 for unlimited installations and we don't just to get Surface RT working.
I know we can wait until Windows Pro, but just seeing if someone has a workaround for now while we wait the 3-4 months for Pro.
I also rely on LogMeIn for my IT business for supporting multiple clients.
My workaround is to RDP into my Win8 desktop at home, then LMI from there. This works great for me, even while WiFi tethered through my LTE phone.
How far are you guys getting with logmein on the RT? I can actually get into my remote machines if I hit the 'click here if you don't see the active x bar'. I lose certain features like switching monitors on dual monitor machines though. I also have logmein central which may be why I have that option?

I would do that but I am running an iMac at home. I have Windows dual booted on it but I would have to remember to change it to that OS everyday when I left and stuff.
Too much of a pain.
We called Team Viewer and they have a $1,500 option but that is still too much to pay for something that should be so simple to use on the Windows RT device.
If we don't get it running we will just get Samsung Ativ Smart PC 500T's to use. I know they work. I just love the form factor of the Surface.
In think that we will see a version of logmein very soon taking in consideration that they already release join.me

Yeah I hope so. We really love Logmein otherwise I wouldn't even be asking.
I ended up installing Windows 8 Pro on my bootcamp partition on my iMac and allowing remote desktop. I will just use it this way until Microsoft release the Pro version of the Surface.
The Surface Pro will be the sweetest technical device in a long time.
Sort of related but I have been using my Windows Home Server and it worked great for remote control of my home pc.
All free past the hardware and software purchase. Likely some old ones out there for sale.

Tried it and it didn't work. It still has to refresh the page everytime to do anything.
Maybe I did it wrong. Can anyone confirm that it will work correctly just like the desktop would.

Did anyone get Logmein working with the Flash fix?
Just give it up. ?
LMI will not work properly on RT until we get a native app.
