Slightly Disappointed with Google Now? - General Questions and Answers

I understand that Google doesn't want to create a privacy scare with Google Now, but I have to say that it isn't as useful as I was hoping. It shows me the weather in the morning and when to leave for the subway and when I had a flight it was cool to see the flight status. Beyond that though, I feel like it isn't being utilized to its full potential.
Anyone else feel this way? Have you thought of cool things Google Now could be doing?
I would love it if it actually read my calendar and noticed when there is a flight coming up. It'd be nice if it scanned my email and noticed that I have a package on the way and tracked that for me.
Maybe Google can have different tiers? The current Google Now can be for privacy freaks and people who love and trust Google can increase the amount of data that Google Now uses? I don't know....they just need to figure out something...

I get the impression its something that will be useful but that right now is one of those google services that is going to be essentially in beta for the next few years.
It is kind enough to tell me to go to the train station to get to work but only ever gives bus timetables. Its obviously aware of the train times as the directions to work tells me how long till the train leaves just doesn't seem to like timetables.
Weather works tells me home/work and occasionally where i am at that moment.
It has once brought up a card for pubs/restraunts nearby which i wouldn't mind being more consistent
I find it doesn't refresh very often. Today on way home it said last refreshed 39minutes ago, chose refresh and it just stayed the same claiming the same 39 minutes.
One day i think it will be a great feature but right now it doesn't work well enough to be more than a gimmicky preview of things to come.

To be honest, I don't see what the big deal about it is. Then again, it's not like I'm boarding flights and going to appointments every other day... and I usually know where I'm going if I'm leaving anywhere. As for the weather, I look out the window for that lol. Maybe in a few years Google Now will cook me eggs in the morning.

I tried it on my Sprint GS3, uninstalled, went back to regular search box. It does just what I need.

I enjoy this, maybe because I'm curious and love working new features. Honestly if you ask me.. its better than the Original Search right? I mean its the Original Search basically with awesome new features.
I guess if you aren't into your phone, or phone features you'd probably not care much. But this is a step forward for Google.. it may not show much compared to siri but at least they are making an effort?
I love it.
Even made the Google Now "Weather Card" which turned out pretty amazing.

"Yahoo Go! is the first application optimized for the “small screen” of a mobile phone that truly makes it easy and fun to access the Internet. Everything about the Yahoo! Go interface is designed to be both visually stunning and give you what you want with the fewest clicks possible.
At its core is the carousel, used to navigate intuitively among the various Yahoo! Go widgets: your own personal channels for email, local info & maps, news, sports, finance, entertainment, weather, Flickr™ photos and search. Simply use the carousel to scroll over to the widget you want. Since Yahoo! Go uses advanced caching and background loading technology, your widget content is automatically and continuously “pushed” to your phone, so it’s always right there when you want it. You don’t need to endure lengthy downloads or navigate loads of links to get to what you want."
Granted, on Windows Mobile devices we've had the capacity for years to do a LOT of things that this app presents as "revolutionary", but what is rather impressive is the way they've integrated it all together. Check out the demo and you'll see.
At this time, they list a total of 77 Windows Mobile devices on which Go should work (though many have a small balloon stating "coming soon!"). Unfortunately the XV6600 is not one of the devices on which it will work. Sad
Live Search, Google Maps, and now Yahoo Go! - gotta love the choices and the competition it breeds! We the consumer end up being the winner!

I used to use it a while back and it was fine... some people complained about it taking over their hotmail inbox on their devices but i chose not to sync mail.
2.0 is still not released on pocket pc so till then i can't give you a good answer (its been a since i've used 1.0)
I used version 1 for a while - until it decided it didn't wanna work anymore that is. Good app. I like the Calender and Contact link. I'll try V2 once it's released for WM in April.
its not released for most wm devices yet.
like someone said before the first beta kinda sucked. it took over your ppc. it asked you to upload pics to yahoo every time you snapped a pic. then it always asked to connect instead of doing it quietly in the backround. on top of that it had no stand alone messenger (everything is about money with these guys) and lastly it had the worst memory leak. everytime i tried it out for more than 2 days i had to hard reset my wizard. it didnt even have html mail.
the concept was great but they never delievered a good product. i hope this gamma release fixes all the problems. and if they cheat us out of a messenger then im going to have to scrap it again.
i must admit though, i am looking forward to the gamma. im curious. btw, any leaks of it yet????

I agree. I tried it out and had to uninstall it within an hour. I found it very frustrating to use, slow to respond and devoid of any useful error messages.

Fuel Price Application?

Mod/Admin, if I've posted this in the wrong section, my apologies.
I've searched but can't seem to find if there's a fuel price application out there for Windows Mobile.
The Windows Mobile version of Garmin GPS has a nice feature where it uses your current GPS location and you can either list the closest stations, or choose premium/mid/reg/diesel and list the cheapest near by your current location.
Looks like www.gasbuddy.com offers an iPhone app that does something similar using Google Maps.
Perhaps there could be a project started to put together an app that could use the Gas Buddy info with Google Maps?
Just kind of brain storming here since I've been unable to find a solution so far.
Thoughts? Ideas?
Windows Live??
Why not use Window's Live Search? It has a gas price function.

Although Window's Live Search does have that feature, I was hoping there was more of a stand alone solution available as opposed to installing a more bundled type app.
I think something very similar to danielgary's Cinemo ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=516695 ) would be exceptional.
He already has a VERY clean and nice interface that is using web based data and GPS location.
I think something like his app, but for fuel prices would be great.
Sadly, I don't have the skill set to develop something on my own.
I *almost* agree

I see what you mean by having standa lone apps, and in a way I agree with that for most things.
But I also like to be able to get to a lot of different features (gas, weather, movie times, traffic etc) under one app that is location (cell tower/gps) based.
This is something I was looking at doing - for the UK of course as it's where I live... but I was worried about the accuracy of the info. I was thinking of getting it from a site called http://www.petrolprices.com/ but I'm not sure how up to date/accurate they are.
There are a couple of apps around but they have a monthly fee whereas mine could of course be free as it's using freely available data...
Using this topic to ask something similar...
Any good software to control gas consumption like gasbuddy for iphone? (graphic and interactive)
Also looking for the same application as herpez
Though I love Live Search/Bing for the maps, GPS-activated traffic (when I have to drive downtown which fortunately isn't every day), etc., I've noticed the gas price applet in Bing isn't entirely accurate. The last time I used Bing to check local gas prices, I had them come up on the screen, and drove past the couple who were closest on my way, and the price at the pump was anywhere from 3 - 10c off of the price Bing was quoting.
But given how these apps get their data, I doubt that ANY such app for any platform can be entirely accurate all the time...

[Q] Mask your OS with Social Networking

So this is pretty random and I've done some searches and can't seem to find anything, probably because no one would care enough to do something like this besides me.
The problem: I'm a MS consultant and am tired of hearing **** from my WP7 friends and colleagues.
The ask: Is there a way to mask/disguise/FAKE the OS I have when working with social networking sites? Primarily Facebook for now, you know the "sent via Windows Phone" or "posted by HTC Sense", "Android", etc.
Anyone know how to change/hack/tweek that without changing phones/OS's entirely?
You could just post from their mobile sites and it will say posted from _____ mobile. You can also post from the main site from your phone and it's like posting from your computer.
I know this isn't really what you asked at all, but it will help with your issue.

Caring about being made fun of by windows fanboys for using a linux based phone to me is like caring about being made fun of because you dont huff fumes from an aerosol can. Always annoys me that some group or person can be so blinded to see that there is more than one alternative that works for people and it doesnt always come from the same source
Some applications let you remove that signature or set what it says. However, the easiest solution would be not to use the application and use the browser in the site. If they dont let you set it, then you have to modify the apk or modify the build.conf file in /system (which may or may not mess things up for other applications that depend on that). It's most likely picking up the make/model from that.
If it bothers you that much, you probably need new friends and ignore the coworkers you have to see regardless. Your current ones suck and have drank the koolaid.
Your problem also reminded me of the following penny arcade comic (ignore the phones in question, just the general overtone of the comic is what is related):

I guess I should have clarified. I'd love nothing more than my posts to start saying Windows Phone and seeing their false appreciation and excitement only to see me still rocking my TB with CM once I actually see them.
Was just a question, thought maybe someone else might have had some hack to alter it somehow.

Ah okay, you just want to one up them in a slightly smartass way . Generally as mentioned, it's just a setting in apps you can change, at least for things like email clients, but you probably looked in whatever you are using already.

Yeah, primarily it's the Android Facebook app for statuses and photo uploading. I wouldn't have the slightest idea on where to start in tweeking anything in it. Naturally I think the settings in the app wouldn't allow me to change that.

[Q] Is 5 worth the hassle right now?

So I have to actually go through effort installing L since Im not able to take the OTA.
But in my research Im reading nothing but bad things about it. Bad lag, glitches, apps not working, reboots etc etc.
In your opinions is it just worth waiting for the next upgrade before doing this nd sticking on 4.4.4 KK?
For me it was. No bugs to speak of. Couple.of annoyances here and there but I like it.
I can't get 5.0 to run on my Nexus 5 at all. It constantly freezes up, forcing a reboot. I have tried installing multiple times and can't get it to work properly. My buddy is having the same issue with his. So, my suggestion would be to wait.
If you know what you are doing, it's not that big of a hassle. No issues with getting 5.0 installed for me. And it's running great
No issues at all on my end. The lack of a Silent mode is a bit annoying, but I would upgrade anyway.

Yeah, that is not going to work well for you. I just leave mine on vibe for now and wait till they get it corrected.
I upgraded yesterday and totally regret it:-
- The silent mode/priority mess
- Having to use quickpic as my gallery (but no photosphere)
- Google keyboard now not using middle button as typed word. (Really big big issue!) Talking about fixing something that isn't broken......
- Having to use google docs as quickoffice has been pulled. (I don't want my docs online!)
I just have the sinking feeling that Google are starting to try and make choices for me rather than listening. Its the sort of thing that killed Microsoft and Nokia.

There's a priority mode and you can set that to allow calendar, calls or messages or not.

It's neat to mess around with, but in my experience it's not quite ready to be a daily driver. I'm using it with multiROM, and I recommend you do the same just so you can see what it's about without making any type of commitment to it.
It's another one of those situations where you have to try it for yourself.
Bear in mind when you read a lot of negativity on the internet it is mostly skewed beyond normal rational thought....
Some of the 'bugs' reported aren't actually bugs. Battery 'drain' is very rarely tested logically, with SOT apparently the only measurement without understanding it's how you the device. People forget common sense and the basic laws of physics e.g. not finding out what is actually using the battery, or concluding facts without numbers and if it 'seems' worse, then it must be.
My advice: Nandroid backup, full wipe, install and play around. If you don't like it, restore.

Titanium Backup made out of dog poo!

It doesn't work.
I want to back up to drive, then download to another identical phone. Moto X 2013 xt1052
It keeps saying:
"NETWORK ERROR, THE DEVELOPER REALLY DOESN'T KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING. They are on drugs. Probably."
That's exactly what google said on my phone.
That and some crap about a network error.
And a server error
SERVER ERROR? ARE THEY ON DRUGS? Wimbledon is in June, not Jan, so I hardly think anyone will be serving on centre court.
I just want it to work.
I press a button and I expect it to just work.
I don't know computer phone stuff, and a nandroid is a flavour of an ice cream? yes?
Tell titanium to just make it work.
Tossers.
It's uploading in bits before falling over.
Just up loaded another 24% so I'm just waiting for google or titanium to **** up and make me start screaming.
Again.
How difficult is it to make a backup app that backs up
and if there is a problem with the app or network, or connection or google servers
it just chills and goes into a holding pattern with an explanation as to why
and then fix/repair/carry on.
The developer shouLd fix this and if it is google, make titanium compatible with it
and if they need to talk it through with google, ****ing phone google up and MAKE IT WORK!
Google invented Android phones specifically so people can phone up google directly.
They should put me if charge
Of this or the Launch codes.
I'm easy on either option.
32%. Still uploading.
Clearly threats of a tactical nuke strike have the desired threat.
Why don't they just make it work properly?
ALSO
TITANIUM IS VERY VERY HARD TO USE,
it is not intuitive at all.
They should make it easy to use for non-tech types {like me}
as well as techies {Like my ex g/fnd}. She writes programs for banks.
I watch television programs. I am in the larger group that Titanium need to address when
creating a back up App.
We don't understand
And when we do, it often stops working properly. (The internet is full of posts by cleaver people with the same googledrivetitaniumbackupscncrap that I'm writing about).
...40% still going
But I still hate this app.
Make it easy to use
and just make it work!
If I lived in the USA I would buy some big guns, get drunk, then make a youtube video
of me shooting up my (totally not at fault) phones.
Hate is a terrible thing.
46% ...grrrrrr
79% Really?
I've upload is 7mbs which is pretty decent.
What's it waiting for? (next) Christmas?
Grrrrr.
100%
Titanium Backup Pro
Upload to Google Drive finished.
Make it work faster and make it easier to use.
BTW, I've not got to get it put on the other mobile (another motox 2013 xt 1052)
But we all KNOW this will not be the easy to do thing it should be.
It's taken hours,
the second drive backup I created is empty despite downloading my phone into it...
This does not work.
Can I buy a cable, connect the two phones and use titanium copy the whole phone onto the other phone?
Same make, model and android 5.1 so no conflict.
I have spent a day doing this.
Also I manufacture drugs. {Crystal Meths}
I am typing this while sitting in a desert in a beat up RV, in a full bio suit {Trad.}

My drug cooking recipe is on one phone but i need it on the other.
Both phones have dbrand skins; one is bamboo, the other is blue carbon fibre.
Obviously to get blue crystal meths, I need to read the recipe off a blue coloured phone.
Oh, I also bought a gallon of methylated spirits as that's prob an important ingredient....
How do I move the entire phone onto the other, by pressing one button
or two at the most?
I don't have time for this, I need to be stealing box sets off Piratebay.
I just want it to work.
