[Q] Is 5 worth the hassle right now? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I have to actually go through effort installing L since Im not able to take the OTA.
But in my research Im reading nothing but bad things about it. Bad lag, glitches, apps not working, reboots etc etc.
In your opinions is it just worth waiting for the next upgrade before doing this nd sticking on 4.4.4 KK?

For me it was. No bugs to speak of. Couple.of annoyances here and there but I like it.

I can't get 5.0 to run on my Nexus 5 at all. It constantly freezes up, forcing a reboot. I have tried installing multiple times and can't get it to work properly. My buddy is having the same issue with his. So, my suggestion would be to wait.

If you know what you are doing, it's not that big of a hassle. No issues with getting 5.0 installed for me. And it's running great

No issues at all on my end. The lack of a Silent mode is a bit annoying, but I would upgrade anyway.

Yeah, that is not going to work well for you. I just leave mine on vibe for now and wait till they get it corrected.

I upgraded yesterday and totally regret it:-
- The silent mode/priority mess
- Having to use quickpic as my gallery (but no photosphere)
- Google keyboard now not using middle button as typed word. (Really big big issue!) Talking about fixing something that isn't broken......
- Having to use google docs as quickoffice has been pulled. (I don't want my docs online!)
I just have the sinking feeling that Google are starting to try and make choices for me rather than listening. Its the sort of thing that killed Microsoft and Nokia.

There's a priority mode and you can set that to allow calendar, calls or messages or not.

It's neat to mess around with, but in my experience it's not quite ready to be a daily driver. I'm using it with multiROM, and I recommend you do the same just so you can see what it's about without making any type of commitment to it.

It's another one of those situations where you have to try it for yourself.
Bear in mind when you read a lot of negativity on the internet it is mostly skewed beyond normal rational thought....
Some of the 'bugs' reported aren't actually bugs. Battery 'drain' is very rarely tested logically, with SOT apparently the only measurement without understanding it's how you the device. People forget common sense and the basic laws of physics e.g. not finding out what is actually using the battery, or concluding facts without numbers and if it 'seems' worse, then it must be.
My advice: Nandroid backup, full wipe, install and play around. If you don't like it, restore.

[REQ] tweak to disable vibration on start up

search for sometime now, could not find any leads that may shed light to this
anyone out there? I'll try searching for it in the registry, if only i know where to start
First off, I don't know why you'd even ask for this. It's a tiny burst of vibration that happens only once when you power up the device, and that's it. There's no harm in it and I can't see a genuine reason for wanting it gone since it happens so rarley.
Secondly, you can't get rid of it. It's part of the self-diagnostic that runs when you switch on the device. If you did find a way to stop it (and I'm 99.9999999999999999999% sure you won't) then the phone would probably think there was a problem and not boot.
You're gonna have to live with it mate.

I was also looking for a solution to this problem.
You asked, why one should wish to deactivate this little vibration on startup...well, quite simple:
My HD2 performs its system backups every night, while it is in its cradle beside my bed. I am using SPB Backup which does a warm reset after finishing its operation. It's really not very funny to wake up every night, only because there is this "little" vibration during the boot up process.
If you are a user of a genuine HTC ROM, there is even an additional little melody playing after vibrating, which is still more uncomfortable! Only for this reason, I just reflashed my HTC ROM back to a Vodafone ROM (which only has the vibration).
I think, it would really be a good idea, If someone found a tweak to suppress the boot up vibration!

[App] Power Switch - save battery through brute force [19 July]

Power Switch
Power Switch is a tool for devices with cases - somewhat like the SmartCover, it will turn off the screen when you shut the case. If you have a device with poor battery life, Power Switch can save tons of juice by switching it off entirely after a given amount of time asleep.
Features:
- Sleep seconds after shutting case
- Automatic shutdown
- Set up a schedule using Night Mode
- Configure sensor sensitivity
- Facedown to turn screen off
- Persistent notification
- Uses almost no power
The app has gone through an extensive testing process here at XDA under another name. Thanks to everyone who helped make it happen, you're the best!
However, this testing showed that some features of that app were not all that useful, and some were conspicuously absent. To save both you and us a lot of grief, we made the second-generation Killswitch.
If you have any comments or suggestions, please use this thread. I daresay Im known as a kindly developer always open to suggestions.

By the way, would it be possible to add full scheduling like in Root Call Blocker?
I guess it would, but why? Surely the light level doesnt change with the day of the week...
I would like it to turn my tablet off entirely on some days for example, when im working night shift.
Is it difficult?
No, its not difficult. Ill look into it but cant promise when. I dont expect this would be a feature many people need im afraid.
Updated with some tweaks to the dead sleep feature and awesome new icons!
I wish I could buy this app. Can't live with the timers and settings of the trial version. Why can't google accept anything other than stupid credit cards?
You can always just make a virtual credit card! Its so easy a child could do it. Just look online for an operator in your area!

My girlfriend allowed me to use hers Now I'm a happy customer. And one of the first as well, it seems
EDIT: Is it possible to inrease upper limit of the auto-shutdown timer? My Nook Color sleeps very efficiently, so the current maximum of 6h does not help much. It would probably only be triggered over night, which would mean that I will almost certainly be using it again within ~3h after it shut down. (Using my tablet is usually the first and last thing I do in a day). Booting the device up again would probably use more battery than those 3h have saved.
Setting it to something between 12h and 2 days would most probably ensure that I do not or cannot use my device at the time anyway, so it's safe to shut down
Consider it done. The feature was mostly for low quality tablets with bad sleep regulation, but if you find it useful, why not?
This is a most awesome app!
Thanks! Please leave a review or suggestions at the market!
Guys, I'd really like to hear some suggestions on how to make this app better, more useful.
Guys... it would be really helpful.
In any case, an update is on its way. No real new features because noone seems to want any!
Power switch and Killswitch the same?
Is the killswitch app you made the same as power switch? I bought killswitch when it came out and was wondering what happened to the updates in that app.
No, Killswitch has been discontinued. Power Switch has some, but not all the same functionality. It also has new features.
Any news on that update? I'd really love to have that extended timeout.
I dunno about other features, though. I promise to let you know when I come up with something

Hi nishanthhh! I'm one of the Say What You See developers!
Are you sure it froze? The app downloads quite a bit of data when it's first loaded, so you may need to be patient?
If it did fully crash, it'd be great to know what sort of device and OS version you're using so we can try and fix it for you!
Really like to hear from anyone else about the app too - it's our first Android app, so we really want to make it as great an experience as possible!
Or, y'know, at least have it so that you can play the flipping thing.
Cheers,
Jon

Tried the game and had no fcs. The good thing is that it works and is fun. The bad thing is that its quite difficult cause I never had an iPhone or heard of this game. Just one request, I want to zoom in on the picture more cause its quite small and I have to strain my eyes.
ok I tried this app but as a french guy this is clearly too difficult for me, not to mention im not really a movie fan

Hi Juhan! We'll see if we can increase the magnification a bit, certainly down't want to send you running to the opticians!
Hi Jon_SWYS, I have just sent an email to yourselves via your online form with some suggestions and a bug report.
I will attach the email here so anyone else can also comment on if they have the same problems?
I have a few suggestions and a bug report for the current version.
Suggestions: I have been playing this on my Nexus 7, and because the keyboard takes up quite a bit of room, you can't always see the full, flashing clue as it is obscured by the keyboard. Would there be a way that we could hide the keyboard, while keeping the clue flashing and highlighted?
Possibly being able to scroll while the clue is highlighted would be beneficial too, but that is less of an issue.
Bug report: On my Nexus 7, when I try and buy more coins I get a "Sorry there was a problem making a purchase on this device. Please check that your System is up to date and you have the latest version of Google Play installed. I am running 4.2.1. It works on my Galaxy Nexus running 4.2.
I hope this report helps, and my suggestion makes some sense?

Please ignore the Bug Report! It was a setup issue on my Tablet!!

blank screen

hey guys,
any of you had an issue with the screen going blank and never coming back on until the watch is rebooted? ( I have ambient screen on)
everything is still functioning, phone detects it as connected, i get vibration for notifications and can even get screenshots from the watch using the android wear app.
using stock watchfaces, not installed anything yet, only setup android pay, since i only intend to use for notifications and android pay.
this is really frustrating, it's happened 4 times within the first 24 hours...

if you can't touch and wake the device, you may need to send it for RMA. Do not waste time in testing, even it is a software issue. Let them fix it for you or simply replace it.

It is acceptable if the watch is loaded with many software. But not normal if it is freshly setup. You may try the official rom here and see if it is okay.
I have this problem now.
Screen sometimes starts working at random for a short while but goes back to blurry.

Mine also goes blank occasionally and only reboot helps, but it's so random, and maybe once a week? so I won't even bother sending for warranty because they might send it back saying that it's not happening to them.
Yesterday it happened while I was tracking my workout so that's a bummer but happily I was able to continue after reboot.

I'm using always on display.

Xperia XZ Serious Overheating Issues

Hey guys in the past week my XZ has been having some serious overheating issues. Even just idling at the home screen it sits at around 40-45c. It seriously makes the phone unusable since when you open anything it just warms up quick and throttles hard. I was thinking it was the last patch that came out so I unlocked the bootloader and tried out a couple of roms like carbon rom which was buggy as hell and slimbit aosp. No improvement. Tried out eXistenZ 6.0 which is what im still on now and no improvement. I honestly have no clue whats going on if anyone can help me that'd be great. Do you guys think my battery could be needing replacement? The phone isint even a year old. I have also tried the FSCv2 mod and still no improvement.

Change habit that after clean flash instantly install everything that exists in the playstore , especially various CPU/memory/battery monitors.
Install one aplication at a time until you find the problem.
btw, carbonrom Is excellent rom like all the other AOSP ROMs for the XZ

I don't think its a certain app I installed since it just started happening out of nowhere after no new apps have been installed. Android battery menu doesn't show any excessive battery drain from apps either. Even after I did a clean flash it was getting super hot and throttled in the setup process.
*Edit* It actually got to 50c while simply replying to your reply in Chrome and lagged tf out of my keyboard. Literally about to throw this phone at a wall.
So I've undervolted the cpu and the phone still reached 53c after browsing Instagram for about a couple minutes. Im seriously loosing my **** at this point. Im seriously thinking that this phone needs a new battery or something even tho its less than a year old.
Update. Did a fresh install of stock rom using flashtool and it throttled during the setup process and still throttles with no apps just trying to send a text message or simply play a song using google play music. Seriously nobody has a clue what is going on? I literally have to have my phone next to a fan just to do anything on it.
I discovered that my battery is only at 38c usualy so I think its safe to say that my battery is okay. My cpu is constantly pinned at 45+ and I only get about 3-4 hours out of a full charge. Did google play services get an update or something? I have no apps installed in my phone still. I seriously need any help
