? For the educated - Asus Transformer TF700

Wondering if someone that is a lot smarter than me can help me understand this device more. I'm debating whether to return it and would like to know the following:
1. Is it likely that further firmware updates from Asus will improve the speed of scrolling through picture heavy websites and Facebook?
2. Will firmware updates increase speed to open websites?
3. As part of helping me understand the above questions, could someone please point out the hardware components of this device that contribute to the above lag (if there are any).
4. As much as I hate to admit it, the ipad almost does everything I want. My hypocrisy only goes so far though and I absolutely refuse to use itunes. Is there any specific hardware (other than display) that the ipad has that is better than this tablet? This question may help restore my faith that this device will eventually work more smoothly.

Put it this way... At its current state ICS and Tegra 3 are not working very well with each other. The new upgrade to ICS is Jelly Bean which will supposedly eliminate most issues that everyone is having. The new Nexus 7in tablet made by ASUS has JB which from what I've heard and seen will make the Infinity and its siblings complete. So looking forward to some Jelly Bean smoothness!!!

1) To be honest i don't even know if it's Asus fault and i'm saying this because i've heard many complains about lag on Facebook application and site and those complains were coming from people with different devices/platforms
2) I'm positive that with firmware updates (from Asus or custom roms from XDA devs) the performance will get better as for now development on this device is still in early stages
3) Hardware related could be only the poor internal storage chip (also to be seen if this "bottleneck" is hardware or driver/software related)
4) I also have an Apple device (was a gift) but i don't like Apple... but maybe for a productive enviroment i would go with it.But if i want a device that i can "feel" as my own and do everything i want with it (good or bad) i would go with an Android device.
P.S: IMHO nobody can tell you better what is good for you than yourself...

Ok, an unbiased answer, huh.... I'll give it a shot.
1) and 2) I'll answer these in cnjunction with eachother, as I think they are intertwined. I think that in the coming months ASUS will give out more updates that quite possibly will tackle any remaining issues with the tablet software-wise. Quite obviously, any hardware-related issues will remain fully in effect. So, as far as any stuttering or hiccups related to the OS or drivers are concerned, I think we should be seeing improvement; that goes for opening websites and scrolling speed, etc. as well. (However, keep in mind that comparing loading and scrolling speed is not exactly trivial due to a lot of parameters involved.)
3) Nobody in here will be able to tell you this, I'm afraid, or somebody has opened up his TF700 without me noticing the post. We have suspicions it's the emmc storage that is causing the I/O issues (Hynix?), but it might be (partly) due to the driverset used.
4) If the iPad suits your needs, why not pick an iPad? There are several good applications available that provide sync without iTunes being involved.The display is an obvious numerical]/i]advantage over the TF700, although the TF700 has visibly higher screen bightness and the screen resolution is not noticeably better in practical usage. To me, the extra (removable) storage availabe is priceless, and the charging dock is a real boon!

The hardware of the Nexus 7 is slower than the one from the Infinity.
The Infinity has a higher resolution though so at the end it's probably more or less the same.
But I can tell you Jelly Bean is a huge improvement in terms of fluidity.
Not without a reason costs the Galaxy Nexus now 50 bucks more than before the update.

Its not better in specs it has the same tegra 3 processors as the infinity just slower at 1.2ghz vs the infinity that is clocked at 1.6ghz. The key to it is that it is optimized by the new Jelly Bean os. Things run a lot smoother when processors and os (ICS) is not fighting over how things should run when an application is launched navigating from screen to screen, browsing, power management etc. Once it drops everyone hopefully will be satisfied with there investment. This is of coarse just my opinion from reading and trying out the nexus 7 tablet.

I've been looking at the HTC Flyer, the Samsung Galaxy tab, but am not sure if there are any other decent tablets out there between 7'' - 12''
budgets is about 200-400 quid
I'm just having a hard time making a decision, I'm not bothered about 1080p playback 720p is fine with me, must have a decent processor/gpu as I like to play alot of games as well, must be android only
at least 5mp camera, preferable with the option of being able to root and ICS
do i get a 3g sim or non 3g? what the heck do i do?
hdmi out is a selling point, dual core is a selling point
I won't be making calls on it but I might want to use 3g+ on it if im out and about
rooting and customisation very important
any one got any decent suggestions,

The Asus transformer series are really nice, I'm looking around to get a Samsung Galaxy Tab myself soon, it looks quiet promising.
I would recommend the Motorola Xoom. The development for the device has been stellar, the devs are awesome and has an unlockable bootloader. Cm9 and other wonderful custom roms like Team EOS nightly builds are solid, fast and will make others envious. The Xoom feels solid and is well built. The screen is not as nice as the ones found on the Asus transformer or Samsung Tab but it isn't bad either. Those other screens also have their cons due to the nature of their technology. There have also been a decent amount of complaints about Asus build quality and Samsung lack of timely updates. The Xoom was the first to get ICS, the first to get a cornerstone build, the first to be officially supported tab for Cm9 and continues to have the latest android enhancements via Team EOS roms. Also the proprietary charger charges the xoom pretty fast and the accessories are cheap now due to it being out for a while. Because it was the first to market, it doesn't mean the it is obsolete. I got a bit of a bad rep in the beginning due to screw ups on Motorola part but all is well now.
I have a 4g Xoom and use it every day. I run the Team EOS nightlys, with the device overlooked to 1.4 (i can get 1.6, but not needed) and undervolted to save juice. Feel free to check out the development thread to verify my claims. Cheers!

Don't get the xoom 2. The bootloader is locked, there isn't nearly as much dev support, no custom roms, no micro sd card slot (deal breaker), more expensive and not all the much of an improvement. It also isn't a Google experience device.
Yea, this I will admit the the screen is better and the writing tech is nice. But you will kick yourself for not going with a better supported device. Before I purchase anything, I checked to see how the community support of the device is and recommend that others do the same. I don't want to solely rely on manufacturers for support.
To be honest I would wait for the Windows 8 tablets if you truly cannot buy an Apple device, as all of the Android tablets still suck(to put it mildly). The iPad is just in a whole another league right now, and ICS didn't make the situation any better. They all lag like crazy, even the 7.7 inch Exynos-equipped Tablet from Samsung. The tablet experience just isn't there yet for android.
What ever you do never get an LG V900 or V909, cant be rooted, or just shortly until you reboot.
Unless you like stock and no root.

Wow really? What tablets running ICS have you owned? My Xoom running Team EOS ICS 4.0.3 is smooth an rarely lags.
The ipad hardware is in another league but the software is still Crap. What good is having all of that power and design but only being able to do 1/4 of what an android tablet can do? Also you are limited to whatever apps Apple deems fit in their one appstore. The other other alternative is to jailbreak and uses cydia. Don't even get me started on having to rely on a pc or mac to back up apps and settings usin itunes. On android I just use titanium backup and clockwork recovery to make a full back up to my micro sd card. I have been through that Crap an will never go back. Have you?
I also like how people are assuming windows 8 is going to be the answer for everyone. It can't run your normal desktop apps, I will be more expensive, it will be locked down, possibly more vulnerable due to it being based of windows and missing so awesome features due to limited api access or something similar. Keep in mind the Android was never intended to take on desktop OSs and the ios doesn't come any closer to accomplishing that. ios is worst. I don't care if here are 200,000+ apps, how many fart emulators and angry birds clones do you need? I how many apps do people on average even bother downloading from the appstore? I can tell you it is not 200,000 or even 50.
I will admit that the stock rom may have its issues, the custom roms usually fixes and enhances the user experience. I have only used the Motorola Xoom and Asus Transformer. Both have Cm9 and Team EOS ICS 4.0.3 nightlys available for them that run like butter. I never use stock rom.
ICS is there in tablet experience and will be getting better with release of 4.0.5 and 4.0.4. I wish people wih limited hands on experience would stop making blanket general statements. Not having the opportunity to tinker wih various hardware and software is one thing, but being unsatisfied wih the out of he box experience is another. This is XDA, experiment, create and discover.

@runhopskipjump: Way to go turning this into an Apple vs Android thread. Read any reputable review site that actually have an objective viewpoint on the matter and you'll come to realize exactly what everyone else has(except for some die-hard android fans): the android experience does not translate well onto tablets yet.
I love android, and have been waiting on an android tablet that would match the iPad, like the SGS did with the iPhone, but alas no tablet has done so yet and with the new iPad, apple leapfrogged the android manufacturers by a year, again.
The only tablet I would even remotely consider is the updated Transformer Prime TF700, but that won't be out until June.
Windows 8 is going to bridge the gap between the PC and Tablet space, allowing tablets to run desktop apps and vice versa. I hate having to have two devices, when one should be enough. The battery life of the current crop of Windows 7 tablets just isn't quite there yet and is the only obstacle keeping me from buying one, and I am hoping that the arm version of Windows 8 is going to remedy that.
thats the problem alot of the hardware does suck, however with the tegra 3 having only 1 gpu core compared to a5x's 4 gpus,
i think apple did the right thing here but I can't support a company like apple
the transformer prime sucks and they have made a new model of the same prime tablet due to issues with the back aluminum and some slight enhancements,
so in a way there is a flaw with those tablets right there and to overcome those you need to purchase the even new model of the prime,
I don't want to be running around, I just want something that will work hardware wise, and the software I can work around with custom roms,

Covers all my needs, has great ROMs - I've only tried overcome, but there are others - and is overclockable.
Now that I've found the switchme app - me, my wife and child all have our separate accounts on it.
Whatever you get, make sure you have enough internal space for such an app.
It's very convenient for more than one user to be able to have their own google account on a tablet, since they often are shared my more than one user.

If money is no object, you have two choices. Either you want a tablet can double down as a netbook and you go for the upcoming ASUS Transformer tablet (skip the Prime, I've heard from several people that it has connectivity issues), or you're more into consuming media, in which case Samsung Galaxy Tab is really good.
At this point it slowly starts to become a matter of taste. The top competitors are pretty close to each other. I'm curious about the upcoming Google-branded tablet too - I kicked the HTC Sense to the curb after a mere 2 weeks and replaced it with AOSP, so I don't put great trust in third party shells.

I don't know why but, recently all I have read from this forum is "how bad Infinity TF700 is" or "how he/she decided to switch Samsung/Ipad etc. over Infinity". I don't know, it just makes me feel more and more paranoid about my tablet.
I know this sounds quite naive, but is there anyone who feels the same way?
You're not alone. I'm very dissappointed with the quality and performance that 600 dollars got me. Not to mention the poor quality of dock (pivot so stiff it would've broken my screen and partially attached SD card cable) that cost me another 116 bucks. Hopefully they're taking their time releasing Jelly Bean update so that things get fixed correctly and not do a half-a$$ed job

If you have a working unit, and whatever you do is covered and you are happy with it, I think you shouldn't be concerned about.
It's just simply no device is perfect and that's always the case with technology. So we all have to compromise something and sometimes the compromise is not noticeable as you may not even use those functions.
Infinity has gorgeous screen, attachable keyboard, and ASUS's reputation of quick software update. Though I myself left Infinity (at least for now), there are still people like me coming back to this forum as we still liked infinity in many aspect and hoping the issues we faced get fixed (presumably by software).
Personally, jumping from iPad 2 and Galaxy Tablet 10.1 4G, I noticed gorgeous screen of infinity quickly. Then some application launching much faster than my old Galaxy Tablet. But battery life, frequent ANR, much slower browser load time (this was actually fixed most part after applying d's tweaking tip), and unexpected crashes.
But to be honest, if I didn't use my primarily Flash sites, if I didn't need full day battery (without keyboard), I probably wouldn't even noticed any issue of infinity.
I currently have Galaxy Note 10.1. Is it perfect? No. Everything but FHD I say yes. But FHD is such a huge component because I read many ebooks with detailed pictures... So I am still torn.
Again, nothing is perfect. You just need to put a priority of what's important to you. With future updates, Infinity will get better not worse, so that's promising. But I wouldn't count on saying, with JB update everything will be perfect.
I personally love mine, and would recommend it to others. Not to suggest that there are no issues, but I'd be willing to bet that the silent majority of people are just getting along and enjoying their device and not posting here.

I've been enjoying my TF700 Infinity more and more as I've seen the performance improve with the Zeus custom rom, so I don't let the complaints get me down. Many people are just wondering what is normal for the device, and some are just looking for assistance. I think it's to be expected with a new device, especially one so complex. The same thing happened with the Nexus 7 forum...for the first month or so, all you would read would be the most pitiful complaints, people on their 7th Nexus 7, light bleed, lifting screens and dead pixels, slow development, and then, all of a sudden, the Nexus 7 is everyone's darling.
If you love your Infinity, enjoy it. You're an early adopter, so there are always risks with something new that pushes bounderies.
Personally I love my TF700. Use it all the time. Love the battery life with the dock (practically always together). I am just waiting for some custom ROMs, or preferably a dualboot for Linux/Android.
Maybe i'm not a stickler when it comes to the "defects", but I am satisfied that the tablet works, has an amazing screen, gives me amazing battery life, has a true keyboard dock (not BT), and a USB port, among other things. I look at the positive things, and since none of the "defects" really take away from the performance, I don't have much to complain about. (on top of that, I haven't even installed Zeus v4, still stock, and I hear that will make a world of a difference.)

Just think about the zabillion Infinity people who have never heard of XDA or any other android device web review site that are happily tapping and swiping away with big 'ole smiles across their mugs.
All of us on here just love torturing ourselves with Ooooo my battery only lasted 7.34 hours or I dang I noticed my tab weighs a few micro kilograms more than my last one...

your shiny new touch device gets fingerprints on the screen when you touch it with dirty hands? the speakers sound crappy when you try to play music at absurdly high volumes? you opened 10 games and the device feels slow? people can actually beat you in a game? the meat you bought 2 months ago is rotten? the device you damaged yourself is not replaced for free?
it's always the same vocal minority that HAS to complain about something, no matter how unimportant or stupid it is.

Same here, mine is great. I have none of the issues that users complain about frequently. Only thing is that yes, it does tend to lag, but then again, it is the most powerful tegra 3 so its just a software issue i'm sure asus will fix

Back when the Transformer Prime was their most current Android tablet we saw biweekly almost weekly firmware updates for the tablet.
It gave us Prime owners the sense that ASUS was actively working to make sure it's customers were getting the best experience.
I've had my Infinity tablet for over a month now since I did the Best Buy exchange, and I haven't seen a single firmware OTA from ASUS.
There's ICS features that the Transformer Prime received in updates that are lacking in the Transformer Pad Infinity.
ASUS spread themselves too thin with the Prime, TF300, Nexus 7, and TF700. They've completely neglected their premium Android tablet products.
We saw the same crap on the Prime forums as well. Funny thing is, I have 2 Primes and 2 Infinity tabs and both work just fine.

You sure the lack of updates doesn't mean that something big, like JB, is coming soon? I'm pretty sure that ASUS would not waste the time and money implementing features on the TF700's ICS if JB were already near completion.
Also, for the prime, the updates mainly served to fix issues, which we don't have on the infinity.
I feel you, I went through the same thing with the prime. I agree the Infinity is not perfect but for me I have a functional one that runs quite well. Don't kid yourself if you think the iPad and the Note don't have issues. Good luck with your decision.

I wonder if the TF700T was implemented early to rush the market and beat Samsung and Acer with their new tabs?
Especially the A700 which I don't believe weathered it's hardware bugs too well.
I have a feeling the Infinity was built for Android 4.1...yet does fine with ICS.

Lets be real..lol Infinity has or has had most of same software issues as prime had. Games crashing. Tons of threads here on it. Browser issues. Poor I/O performance. Primes updates were released to add new features and address those things. Infinity pad also had update to address a major issue. Which is I/O performance. It did show a minor to decent improvement but wasn't solved. So its not all peaches n cream over here in Infinity forum either.
BUT
like you said, Asus not likely wasting anymore time on ICS. If jb is that close, no need to waste resources on ICS. So lets all hope it brings the true stability Infinity pad and Prime deserves. Along with new features and any further improvements that can be made, software wise, to better I/O performance. Also get the gaming rigght. No reason my nexus 7 can play any game flawlessly without crashing and the infinity pad and prime can't. I don't need to have any mods or limiting processes or custom roms for my N7 high performance and stability. I have a feeling the real power and performance will be seen on Prime and Infinity pad once JB is released.
Plus I also believe more people who have good working infinity pads should post/male threads and let people know. New people coming Imto forum get scaredoff from so many complaint threads. We know alot of infinity owners have issues. BUT the flipsode is that ALOT have great working units also. There needs to Be a balance being represented. People do have valid complaints but people also have genuine praises for this device also.

One of the best things the mods on the Prime forum did was to make a dedicated complaints thread. Basically, if you wanted to ***** about your Prime, get it off your chest in that thread otherwise your thread is closed. I think this forum would really benefit from that because this continual posting of negative threads is getting really BORING for people like me who are happy with their Infinitys. Sure, people have a right to complain but why not dump it all in one thread??

The main problems with the prime were wifi and gps issues. Most of the updates were toward those two things, and not toward the other issues you mentioned.
I disagree about your other point, that people should let others know. I believe that people should stop making threads that bash and keep to the threads that already exist. It doesn't do good to look like a marketing shill, either for or against the tablet, no matter the truth of anyone's statements.
Most of the "infinity sucks" posts are from the SAME PEOPLE. Most of these detractors claim to have already sold/returned their Infinity's yet come here over and over again just to troll.
I admit the Infinity has a lot of issues and it is disappointing to me that it has more issues than the TF300 I sold but I will be patient and see if Asus fixes things. I have had enough experience with Asus products to know they are one of the better companies out there when it comes to dealing with issues.

Completely Disappointed With TF700t

Suffice to say that after being in the iOS environment for the past few years, my venture into Android with the TF700 has been lackluster at best. I've had the tablet for 24 hours and have been utterly disappointed with its performance. For being the premier android tablet on the market, it's no wonder people migrating from iOS are having such terrible experiences.
Firstly, I'd say that about 20% of the apps i've downloaded have crashed or stalled on me. These are all main stream apps, nothing from small developers, its from the googles, amazon, pandora, etc...
This tablet couldn't stream music, run the ftp client, and browse the web at the same time.... the tablet was sugglish and the music would stop playing at times.
App loading time is crazy slow.... i feel like i'm working on a 486 here..... browsing speed and rendering is terrible also.... I can't believe you guys are able to actually be productive on this thing. It's most likely going in a drawer full of other ****ty devices i've bought over the years.
While not a fan of the closed of iOS ecosystem, I have to tell you that the OS is stable and polished. The apps all look beautiful and well made, the ipad doesn't freeze, and it's overall a more intuitive system. I prefer the open source aspect of android, but wow, this tablet was a complete let down. My business partner's ipad 1 is still a better and smoother experience than this piece of junk.
My wife has both an iPad and an iPhone, they most certainly do crash. I have used both and the TF700T is not nearly as bad as you describe. It out performs the hell out of the iPad with proper maintenance. I am not sure why you have had such a bad experience, but the device is far from a piece of junk. As for app crashes, again your experience differs greatly. I rarely have crashes at all, let alone from the app devs you mentioned. I will admit that the iOS is nice and simple, but I find its more geared towards the non-technologically inclined. Perhaps the Android OS just isn't for you?

Hey there... I am a programmer and web designer, grew up building custom computers and web sites and programming a lot, so I am familiar with the open source platforms and the more tech-related aspects of technology. That being said, Android itself has to far to go it's almost not even work dealing with. I don't know why I am having these issues, maybe its growing pains but that being said, I was expecting a completely different experience. If one does a search of the general section here in the TF700T forum using the word "disappointed" about 20 or so threads will show up.
A lot to wade thru for sure...it's all pretty much been covered however.

Well, you are right about the browser, if iirc out of the box, the browser sucks. If you want to give it another chance you might look into browser2ram. You can search it here on the forum and I think its on the play store, really takes care of the browser sluggishness. Just a note most of the issues with this tablet in particular aren't Android OS related, per se, a lot of the issues come from things Asus has done/ not fixed yet. I have several other Android devices that required no tweaking at all to run well right out of the box. If your interested in getting really into increasing performance/bug fixes, the CleanRom custom rom is supposed to be the best, but be warned, unlocking your bootloader to do custom roms/recoveries voids your warranty. Given that your device is new this may not be for you. The best thing I can suggest is deciding if all the work you may need to put into the tablet to get it the way you like it worth the time to you, if not, the iPad may indeed be more useful to you. The closed enviroment of the iPad has its advantages.

Do you judge everything and everyone within 24 hours of getting to know it/him/her? The Hynix storage controller was a bad, bad decision by ASUS, w' all agree, but a good custom ROM fixes a lot of the problems. You should not have to void your warranty to get a well-performing device, though, so I'd say I agree.

On what data do you base that statement? I do not believe there are that many disgruntled ex-iAdopters -- most are perfectly happy, I guess.

No larger-developer apps have crashed on me regularly, and even the apps from smaller devs play quite nicely most of the time (even if not in a tablet-specific layout. ).

I've been running FTP clients from day 1, so still on the stock ROM, and I have never had any issues at all. Music steeaming over Bluetooth is a known issue, but that is not confined to the 700.

Try runnign a 486 and then asking it to do whatever yo uexpect from the Infinity: pushing a FullHD screen and running a 3D game, for example. Then come back in here and share your observations as to whether the 700 is really that slow.

I cannot believe how much more I am doing know as compared to, say, a year ago. I'm not only readin during the commute, but brwosing, Whatsapping, emailing, the **** -- I signed up here in 2008, I believe and had 30 posts when the Infinity came in; I've never been pestering XDA this much before.

Although it's a matter og çolor'and terminology, I usually prefer the term "dumbed down". It's pick-up-and-use, compared to the freely tweakable and slightly more complex ANdroid ecosystem.

The TF700 should outperform the iPad 1 and 2 out of the box, and should do the same to the iPad 3 when tweaked.

No issues on sotck browser, but then I use Brwoser2RAM as well -- makes the browsing significantly faster and pleasurable.

This really helps -- or just install CROMI and be done.

Samesung, for example, has a knack for making very good devices that just perform out of the box.

The TF700, actually all Asus tablets, suffer from some unique performance and multitasking issues caused by the design (h/w) choices Asus made. Do a search on “Asus IO issues” either on XDA or Google. The "best" Android tablet in terms of performance, functions, and features available right now is the Note 10.1. Sadly, to your point about compromise, it only has a 147 PPI 720P display which makes it a non-starter for quite a few people. The Nexus 10 is a great Android tablet on paper but suffers from QC issues and a lot of folks find the phone UI Google's using on it both odd and a bit barren feature's wise. At $499 for the 32GB version with no SD slot for expansion it’s no bargain either. Samsung's releasing their own version of the N10 (P5200) which might be a true iPad competitor in performance, functions, features, and hopefully quality. It’ll have an SD card slot and most likely multiview which is a killer feature on a 10” tablet and something that will set it apart from the iPad. It’s supposed to be announced on the 19th and available in March. Maybe that's worth a look before abandoning Android all together.

I know why you're having these issues. (I feel like that baby in those V8 commercials, *bop* you on the head)
you're doing development work with a ASUS Transformer Infinity IS your problem.
The Transformer Infinity TF700T, TF300, and TF201 / Prime tablet all have underline software (but more likely) hardware problems that are the reason they at times perform very slow. ASUS to-date still haven't resolved this with any update release, which is why I'm teetering to think this is hardware.
OP you should have gone with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, or Galaxy Note 10.1 for your testing. SAMSUNG is quality, ASUS is just hype and they got a lot press from being the first to show off a keyboard docking tablet that can convert easily to a netbook. Fast forward nearly 2 years later and everyone copied the idea and doing it far better than ASUS.

What are these "far better than ASUS" "keyboard docking tablet that can convert easily to a netbook" you speak of? I only know of asus transformer line that can do this on android... I've been searching for higher resolution / better build quality alternative to asus transformer for a long time now and I haven't found any. (we are talking about tablets that jave keyboard docks which house extra battery, extra connections, extra storage, etc.)
I would probably stand in line for a Samsung built 10" (or bigger) tablets with nexus 10-like screen resolution that comes with detachable keyboard dock (transformer style; form tablet to notebook quick and easy) housing extra battery, storage and connections. If it came with vanilla android sans all bloatware I'd probably camp in front of the store to get one.

Commit or don't. Unlock your bootloader. Install CROMI, hell, do a dual boot with ubuntu Linux. My tf700 does almost everything my laptop can do as long as I can make the software run on an ARM cpu..
You brag about how 1337 you are, so put your mind to work and make the device work for you. I HATED the TF700 until I dumped all the stock software. the stock rom is worthless. Mine is fast and the battery lasts all damn day. I can't complain. and if Android won't do it, Linux will. The screen resolution is right, the compliment of hardware is decent and the dock with external battery is the single BEST feature it's got.
but the stock software does suck, but it's all written in C, not HTML/PHP. Be 1337 or return it and get your money back. I love mine. I personally will NEVER bite into the Apple. iOS sucks and it always will. I like being able to download the source code that runs my device and modify it the way I see fit. that's why the only mac/windows machines I use are virtual and running on my Linux box.
Buy the hardware you want and make the software you want or stfu.

The TF700 is very disappointing in its stock state. You shouldn't have to do it to make your tablet run fast and smooth, but you should unlock the bootloader and put CleanROM on it. Further, you can go into "Developer Options" under "Settings" and disable all animations. I couldn't stand looking at the slide-show animations, so now everything pops up and opens/closes instantly and smoothly. While you're in the "Developer Options", you can also turn on "Force GPU Rendering" which helps as well.
As with some devices like the G-Tab, some phones, and the TF700, you have to unlock them and put different ROM's on them to make them run like they should've from the factory to begin with.
Once you unlock, install a ROM, and do a few tweaks (and use a different browser like Boat Browser), I think you'll be pleased at the performance of your TF700.

I get so tired of these threads touting disappointment with a device.
We all know there are bugs, deficiencies, better options, damage out of the box, on and on...
If it breaks or causes frowning return or get the frigging thing fixed.
Why the drive to whine about it here?
I wish the moderation team could gather all the booboo threads and put them in their own section so they were easier to avoid.
Then the roving gangs of haters could hang together outside of the HELP forums.

My first Android experience ws with an LG O2x --the worst smartphone ever the carry that designation -- and I was mainly on MoDaCo then. My next device was a Samsung SGS2 (you live, you learn), and I went over to XDA. Looking back, it strikes me how friendly and open I perceived that forum to be, and that could have to do with the overall excllence of the device itself. Nonetheless, even the SGS2 has (had) its fair share of bugs and quirkyness, but it seemed so much easier to handle for some. I still don't understand why, since every appliance known to mankind has its faults, whether that is a flintstone hammer or the Space Shuttle. Going by that example: the more technologically advanced the appliance, the more opportunity for (fatal) error.

You're growing old, -that -- but then I guess so am I. I'm far from retirement age (partly unfortunately ) --I'm 34-- but even online I sense that life experience makes me react differently than, say, ten years ago. It's not all good, but I guess it is a normal development. I guess pretty much anything has changed over time, but we'll have to cope with it.
Have to agree stock was not all that impressive. With clean rom it is a great machine. I have to say ipad is smooth but just seems made for the simple type person. I personally love the way I get to tinker with Android systems, I think most of us are on XDA for that reason.

Remember the "buttery smooth" claims from ICS to JB...man when the switch happened that's when I really started frowning.
One day I said "ok that's it" and forced myself to improve things with a custom set-up.
Thank goodness I have never had the mechanical bugs that were so often reported by others.

The apps all look beautiful and well made, the ipad doesn't freeze, and it's overall a more intuitive system. I prefer the open source aspect of android, but wow, this tablet was a complete let down. My business partner's ipad 1 is still a better and smoother experience than this piece of junk.

Having owned a couple of ipads (1 and 2), I can tell you that iOS does crash just like all other operating systems. I've been working with many different OSes over the years, and apps crashing is an unavoidable part of life.
The reason people think iOS doesn't crash is because Apple made the decision to not inform people when something has crashed. It's pretty clever, actually. In windows, android, Linux, and everything else, whenever something crashes there is an error message telling you an error has occurred and so-and-so. But in iOS, when something crashes, you just end up back in the home screen. Most people at this point would think that they accidentally pressed the wrong button or the home button. And also, the lack of an error message means there's no interruption of experience causing the user to not remember.
I have to agree with some others here. You bragged about being a 1337 and then you went ahead and showed us you don't really know much about the systems.
I recently sold my infinity and bought an asus vivotab rt. After having used the vivotab rt for about a week, holy cow this thing is great. Both android and iOS are slow and sluggish compared to windows rt. If you want something that flies, get a windows rt tablet.
I'm amazed how there is no lag time between swipes. It's amazing to watch the screen following your finger without delay.

Let me explain a vital difference to you. XDA is a Developers forum. Not a 'moan about how a product doesn't meet your insanely high expectations' forum. And it certainly is not a 'compare it to an iCrap' forum!

TF300 running 4.2, We're getting it when?

I'm simply confused of why does asus release updates on the lower end model?
I ditched the 300 for the infinity, and never looked behind but now it kind of backfires, i'm still hoping 4.2 will solve some of the lag issues, i just don't understand why the 300 is smoother with lower specs, ( dont bring screen res in this please )

Well if you would ask me i would say they are experimenting on the lower end tablet before updating their flagship. I know many won't agree with me and though Tein from Asus said that the teams for software development of each of the devices are different I would say why would Asus openly admit that they are testing out their firmware on tf300t. That would outrage tf300t owners.

The screen res no matter still has something to do with it. On cyanogen 10.1 it is very smooth, in Cromi it is fast but doesnt seem as smooth as cyanogen. I think that is the difference between 4.1.x and 4.2.x. And the bloatware on the tf700 by ASUS seems to be what slows in down tremondously. Also drivers are an issue on it as well. The bloatware when taken away, in Cromi's case, leaves a very fast tablet. ASUS should take some advice from sbdags LOL.

Get your act together -- you specifically said in your OP that you hoped 4.2 fixed the lag issues. SELL THE 700 AND BUY AN IPAD.

You asked a question in which you didnt want to be given the answer that is the answer. Yes there are bugs in the Rom but you cannot expect people to give you answer they dont have or you dont want given to you. 4.2 will eventually be released for the tf700, why they released it on the 300 first idk, maybe there was more bugs to work out on the tf700 than on the 300. If you are not happy with the tf700 then go back to the 300. Other then that there are no other answers to be given.

They always release stuff for the TF300 first. I would imagine that it has a larger user base and that it's a bit of a guinea pig release for them. I have noted that with previous releases that Asus are fairly quick and knocking out updates to fix things and then the TF700 gets the new patched release as its first release. This is what happened with 4.1.1

As far as I am concerned, they should get some help from the talented developers here, like yourself to get this running properly.

If you look at the features that the 700 has, you can see that there are some additional things that need to be supported before releasing it. IPS+, resolution, different CPU/GPU profiles, support for more ps3 controller profiles, the list goes on.

Having examined the rom files for the TF700 and TF300 the two devices are a lot closer than you think. The firmwares also share many similarities. In fact a TF300 file and a TF700 file are 99% the exact same files so I don't buy the fact that the dev teams don't talk or are different. They are clearly sharing the same source and at times sharing the same outputs.
If you take a TF700 rom and flash it on a TF300 even with a TF700 kernel everything works except the front facing camera. I believe the hardware is different thus causing that. Otherwise they work the same. Even TF300 users have success overclocking to the same speeds as TF700 users..... The reverse is also true - in fact they don't remove the higher res files form the TF300 because in my opinion it is easier to build one version that fits both.
If I were them I would release new stuff to one user base first, get the bugs ironed out and then release to the higher end user base. Seems very logical and a very good IT release strategy to me. And in fact this is what they did with the JB 4.1.1 release and they appear to be doing with the 4.2.1 release. There is no release date for the TF700. Why? Imo (not based on any facts of course) they are waiting to see if it works well. If so they release a version of it for the TF700, if not they patch the TF300 and we wait a bit longer. So far the reviews from the TF300 users is good - no major bugs (unlike the 4.2 google nexus release) so I expect us to have the TF700 version in the first week of April if history repeats itself.
You make a lot of sense man, if I had not heard it from tien and Gary, I wouldn't believe it either. And as much as I agree with your logic, it's just not the case... They both start with the same base from Google, add their custom framework- that IS 99% of the code. They are very close, but as you have seen with the camera, they are not the same device... Bad strategy, I agree.
The only "facts" I have are what the reps have said in dealing with troubleshooting those devices with Asus.

I had an ipad and sold it, because i didnt like it, and i got my tf700 before june, aaaand i like the tablet tbh. And yeah i said i hope 4.2 fixes the lag issues but thats not what im focusing on,

Wat other improvement are you expecting from 4.2 then? Muti-user capability? Hardly game-chaning, isn't it? Very few users actually use it on the devices that provide the capability.

I'm looking for a replacement for my daughters current tablet. She has a 2012 Nexus 7.
Would the TF300T still be a worthwhile upgrade? They're selling rather inexpensively for $100 refurbished.
I know cm has a 12.1 rom for it, how does the tablet run with Lollipop?

Runs well on KatKiss Lollipop and Katsmallow, but don't know how it compares with Nexus 2012.

I have both the Nexus 7 (2012) and the TF300T. My Nexus 7 doesn't get used as much these days, since it has a lot of lag with lollipop on it. I did turn off a lot of sync options on it and that helped with some of the lag.
I mostly use my Transformer. With Katkiss lollipop on it, it is very responsive and works much better than the Nexus 7. I haven't tried katkiss marshmallow on it yet, but the fact that there is still development support going on in this forum, it has a good amount of life left to it. Katkiss seems to have better features than CM 12.1.

I have been using my TF300T for 3-1/2 years now. Every so often I get the bug to shop for a new tablet. After trying a few of the "Latest technology" I have concluded that there is nothing on the market that tops this tablet. I am currently running the latest Katshmallow OS (010). If I had a need for another one I would buy it without a second thought.
I am sure this will not always be the case, and I don't do any heavy gaming or video viewing so results may vary depending on how you use it. But for now and given the price I would say, "Go for it!"

Yes, I own the tablet and I am the cyanogenmod device maintainer.
I think that this device is utter crap and there are gazillions of tablets which work much better than this one.
If keyboard is a must, then you have much less choices I agree.
This tablet (like the nexus 7 (old version), and other transformers) suffer from underperforming nand flash storage. Just try to Google it. My guess is that katkiss and other roms perform better than CM because they overclock and because they switch off the sync after writes, so the nand performance issues show a bit less frequently.
(No criticism: katkiss is very well maintained - he does a great job and its maybe the only way to keep the device usable).

I can google any device on the market and find negative reviews about it. But, in 3 years of using this tablet, I have been very pleased with it, at least since I moved away from stock, (which I did within a month of purchasing it). And since Katshmallow came out I have been even more impressed with the performance of this "underperforming" device.
I am also aware of the common complaints against it. Whatever the reasons for my personal experience with it, I have no major complaints against it. It runs all of the apps I use quite well with no lag or crashes. I watch Netflix and Hulu videos on it without any stuttering or buffering. It syncs with my Bluetooth devices and the audio works well. I don't do any gaming with the exception of HayDay and Pyramid Solitaire, so possibly that makes a difference.
Maybe I got lucky and have an exception to the rule. I'm sure there are other newer tablets on the market that outperform it. But as it stands now, based on my personal experience, if this tablet dies today, I would do everything I could to find another of the same model.
On another note, I appreciate the development done with CyangenMod for all Android devices. Without that development, a lot of the other custom ROM's would not exist. Thank you for your contributions to that development.
All of that said, I guess we just have to agree to disagree about the TF300T.
Well I bit the bullet and purchased the Lenovo Tab2 A10-70F tablet for both kids. They won't get them until Christmas but I've been setting them up and upgraded them to Lollipop. My experience so far is that it's a nice tablet. I get the feeling this will be to the kids what the 2012 Nexus was to me when I first got it which was an amazing tablet!

I was about to pull the trigger on one of these that includes the keyboard on Ebay for $100 until I read this. What tablet would you recommend that fits this criteria:

I stand by my previous posts and say that for $100.00 you can't go wrong with this tablet. And having the keyboard as well makes it an even better buy. I would pay twice that without hesitation. It will top anything new on the market at much higher prices. The caveat is you need to use a custom ROM to see the best performance. I highly recommend KatKiss 6.0 I have been using it for a couple of months now and have no regrets whatsoever. Prior to that I used KatKiss 5.1 and was quite pleased with it too.
The bottom line is unless somebody uses a tablet regularly there is no way they can give an accurate review on it. I've used this table for 2-1/2 years REGULARLY AND DAILY and other than the short time I was on stock I have never regretted buying it.

Absolutely not! I bought a TF700 for my wife about a year after buying the TF300T thinking I would be getting a faster and more capable tablet. After about a month of frustration she tossed it aside and went back to her Kindle Fire HD because it was a total piece of crap, crashing constantly and locking up at every turn. . I tried several different custom ROM's with no improvement. I finally tried KatKiss 5.1 v30 and it was usable but it sits on my nightstand gathering dust. I thought I may have gotten a lemon but after I read through pages of posts and it seemed to be issues that are very common on the TF700.
It's an amazing tablet, thanks a lot to Katkiss it is running as smooth as ever but personally I must say the tablet factor for me has worn out it's welcome it's great for consuming stuff but my next "tablet" is probably going to the SP 4 but not before MS has fixed their software bugs of course.
One thing that still stands out for me is the amazing batterly life and Asus is probably one of just a few companies having done the keyboard attachment thing right. I cringe everytime when I'm looking a t Google's pixel C attempt I mean wtf 3 "slides" to position this thing? lol and at that price I'd rather pay twice as much for me the SP 4.
The screen resolution is just decent but if you buy it make sure to root it, unlock the bootloader and install Katkiss it's the best available ROM (thanks so much) and set the cpu speed to around 1600, otherwise typing won't be a good experience. Oh and make sure to let it run out of battery after the first full charge.
yeah, asus has produced fairly good products overall in the past ~20 yrs. more often than not they do a good job at introducing proper 'consumer demo' additions to products that usually lead into the next gen. cycle, preferably.

I tend to agree, but as you said, without the stock ROM. Before, with the stock OS it was almost unusable. Now with
KatKiss MM 6.0 I'm happy with the table. It isn't as snappy as my wifes new Galaxy Tab 10.1, but it is good enough
till I can replace it with a better model.
