Those cheap SOBs at Samsung - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

On CNET I see "Samsung will pay you up to $300 for your phone". So I check the samsung link to see what they'll give for a fully functional non damaged Skyrocket.... $145.

Really though, dont even bother with this BS.

weird if u pick skyrocket, its 145, but if u pick s2 lte its 200, isnt s2 lte and the sr the same phone
and i dont think its samung site, its Clover Wireless

It's because the S3 came out the SR value went down

Its because its not an overrated/overhyped iphone lol

I really have no idea why you expected better. This phone is technologically "old" now.

$145 sounds about right, actually. A Skyrocket goes for about $250-$300 on CL, so $145 is about 50% of secondhand market prices, which is in the range of where quotes usually fall from my experience.
I've seen this brought up on other forums already and people are saying things like it's too old or because it's devalued thanks to newer phones, but frankly, I think the answer is just that this is standard pricing range. How many of these type of promotions popped up already? I know all four major carriers do it. T-Mobile is using the same source as Samsung so you're getting the same prices, Sprint and Verizon is giving even less, and AT&T doesn't seem to have a quote system, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
When selling your products to large company or B&M places (pawn shops, specialized buyers, wholesale buyers, etc), a big part of what they do is convenience. Thanks to that, you're probably never going to see a major promotion that offers good prices.
If nothing else, it should be noted that demand/how easily they can get rid of inventory/etc may factor into pricing. As noted by CNET, the only smartphone to get the full $300 is an AT&T iPhone 4S 64GB. Mind you, not just a 64GB 4S, but specifically an AT&T one. If you choose the CDMA 64GB 4S, the quote suddenly falls $50.

Awesome insight 8525Smart. Very well put and yeah, it's definitely true. You never will get as much from a quote than what you will somewhere like CL or eBay, which is why I never sell anything otherwise, unless it's here in the marketplace. I'd just stay away from anything official if you're trying to resale, honestly.

gazelle.com (checked it out only cuz of a commercial on tv) only offers $126 in flawless condition lol.

WWJD? Ethically Questionable Action...

PLEASE DON"T BASH ME FOR MY CAPITALIST THOUGHTS, HELPFUL CRITICISM WELCOME
Hello Everyone. I've been doing research for the past couple of days and I've noticed that on ebay, a brand new unlocked iPhone 4 is selling for upwards of $1,000 while a brand new Captivate can be had for about $300-400.
I am still within the 30 day return period for my phone. I am thinking about returning my phone, getting the iPhone 4, unlocking it and selling it on ebay, then buying my dearly beloved Captivate for non-contract price on ebay or somewhere else.
By doing this I could make a profit of minimum $200 and max about $500. Are there any laws forbidding this? If not, then it's definitely in a legal grey area. Has anyone out there ever done this before? Thanks for the help
Update 1: Ok, purchased my second Captivate on Ebay for $380
Update 2: Traded in my first Captivate for an iPhone 4. They had to activate the iPhone in store, thus rendering my original SIM unusable and leaving me with a microSIM. I was bummed out. I thought I had to go to an AT&T store for them to transfer me back to a regular SIM. It turns out that microSIMs work in the Captivate! All you have to do is position it right Took me 3 tries to get it to work.
Phase 3: Sell iPhone 4 on ebay for a profit
What laws would prevent you from selling your property? You get the phone subsidized because you pay the 2 year contract. If you are still in your window feel free to do that, if you think it is your best option and you will actually make that amount of money on the phone.
You're not breaking any laws at all, you're maneuvering within your rights. Knock yourself out.
Thank you for the positive feedback, I feel this plan is coming to fruition
Er, I'm not sure why consulting Jesus is necessary. There is nothing morally incorrect about this.
As for legality: In some cases, eBay will prevent you from doing this (they did so with the Xbox 360, Wii, and PS3, I believe), but it is usually due to the companies contacting them and asking them to do so. In other words, it is usually something voluntarily enforced by certain companies for whatever reasons. In most cases, however, they will not do this, and I don't believe they're doing so for the iPhone 4.
I understand there are also some out there who find the concept of buying something then selling it higher elsewhere due to shortages is morally objectionable, but frankly, I haven't heard a good argument for why it is yet.
To get to the point, if you so desire to get an iPhone 4 and sell it on eBay for profit, it is entirely up to you.
good luck being able to unlock the iphone.
the jailbreak is broken on 4.02 and you need to jailbreak to unlock
all phones are shiping at least with 4.02 and soon 4.1
Yea, unlocking it is your main issue.
The only reason the phones that exist sell so high is because they're unlocked... An ATT user won't buy a locked phone for $1000 when they can buy it for $200 from ATT...
WWJD?
Seems o.k. to me...thanks for asking.
Jack
I live by WWZ(Zilch)D. So far I've gotten 2 STD's, bricked my captivate 37 times and it's caught fire (twice). This isn't working out so good for me.
I don't see any reason why this would be morally objectionable or against any laws.
Morally speaking, cell phones are not a necessity, they are luxury, so it is worth whatever people are willing to pay for it; its not like you are overcharging for medicine, food, or shelter.
Legally speaking, you purchased the phone and I am pretty sure it does not say anywhere in the contract that you must keep the phone until your contract is up; or else they wouldn't offer early upgrades since that would endorse contract violations.
And as far as WWJD, he would probably give the phone away for free and buy a new one, and I don't think you want to do that...
Lets get this straight, I'm pretty sure Jesus would use his magic to turn a huge profit and blow it on drugs and hookers. Isn't that what revelations was about? It's been a while since sunday school.
I did this back when I had an iPhone 3g. I sold it when My contract ended to get a backflip for $100 on a new 2 year, then turned around and sold it for $300+, so I had around $550 to play around with, and at&t didn't care.
Also, installed clockworkmod and quickboot on a captivate at at&t today, but didn't have time to root it
I'd say go ahead with it. I mean, $1000 for an okay phone is stupid, but if people are buying it, then it makes them stupid (or ignorant, as they apparently aren't aware of the Galaxy S series). In fact, this sounds like a good idea...I might want to do it!
IMO, the iPhone 4 should sell for around $500 unlocked on eBay...
So you do have a backup phone right?

Ah I foresaw this as a problem as well, I figured I would just purchase a captivate at non-contract price now, and wipe and exchange the original Cappy for the iPhone 4 so I won't go through any withdrawal symptoms while the iphone is selling on ebay. Yeah I'll have to front some money but I should double my investment. Plus, I got $250 for selling my 1 yr old unlocked iphone 3G so I already have some spending money. Man people will pay lots of money for iCrap

actually, and correct me if I'm wrong, fairly certain the terms of service for buying a SUBSIDIZED phone (which, if you buy as an upgrade is subsidized) requires you to activate and use it on your line. they claim if you don't use it on one of your lines, they will charge you the difference or equivalent early termination fee.
now for how they enforce that or how often is probably extremely low. for instance, my sister used my mother's upgrade option to buy an iPhone 4 and the AT&T corporate store even did the process for us in the store. clearly they don't genuinely care, but I believe it's within their right to charge you for breaking the terms of the contract.
And then if the iphone doesnt sell and ask those people on ebay are just waiting for rubes? I would be careful of using ebay as a measuring stick for the actual selling prices on the iphone, considering its off contract price.. Edit: nevermind there is none, all contract. I wish you luck with your iphone... Personally if I was going to buy a 1000 dollar phone I just get an ipad, hope no one is that smart

I'd definitely do that. I actually did it once with the iPhone 3GS, made a really nice profit. I usually find ways to get my phones for decent prices and save my contract for an iPhone to do what you're thinking of doing.

I will be headed for Verizon as soon as the ATT merger goes through but right now there is no point since in my area T-Mobile has the fastest data speeds by a long shot and the cheapest pricing as I am on a loyalty plan. That said, it is hit or miss with T-Mobile but if I don't get my way with customer service, I just keep calling back. I mean, I really can't think of any other provider that would have gave me a free Sensation and let me keep my G2X while still remaining contract free. Can you?

You'd think that after two different manufacturers both produce craptastic phones for the same carrier then the blame should really be leaning towards T-Mobile's allowance of said phones into their line-up..?

The Vibrant gave me GPS issues constantly... I guess this was a bigger issue for me since I was travelling a lot at the time. The GPS issues were widespread and poorly handled by Samsung in my opinion, also didn't like how they dropped the Vibrant and replaced it with a clone with a FFC under the disguise of Galaxy S 4G.
The final straw was once I started to notice my notification bar clock burning into the screen (along with some of the constantly displayed icons). I bailed before the problems got worse and argued with T-Mo till they at least gave me a free upgrade.

I'll never say "I'll never buy from "X" place" again. You aren't going to make a liar out of me. Samsung botched the vibrant (and a few others) and I along with nearly everyone else is drooling over the gs2. With this many different devices with different hardware and software variants, some are bound to be lemons. What I'd really wish t-mobile(and other carriers) would do is offer to reset phone upgrades for people with specific devices that have well known and documented issues. My old vibrant, for instance... everytime I call to complain about the gps issue, EVERY csr tells me this is a known issue and sends me a replacement. I've swapped it out 6 times in 9 months and even asked for a different phone of equal value and been shot down, as recent as 2 weeks ago. I don't want a free phone, I just want to be able to spend ANOTHER $200 on a "high-end" phone that works.

LG is now screwing its customers over just like Samsung used to. But yea. I don't believe for one second half these people will never buy LG again because as soon as the Nexus 3 hits, there is going to be a mass exodus of LG users. You also see how far boycotting samsung got you. No where. They now make some of the best devices out and have no problem selling them.

Is $260 a good deal on an Infuse???

A friend upgrading to a GS2 wants to sell me his. Like new in box with all accessories. What do you guys think. I was leaning towards the Sensation but they are just priced too high right now. I buy all my phones outright. Haven't been under contract in ages.
Let me put this way. I got mine from craigslist site. He asked for 300, and we settled for 260. But when I got the piece to hand, it had a couple minor scratches on the sides (sides only) mostly due to keys, etc, and so I finally got it for 220 after some bargaining. Plus this was abt 3 weeks after Infuse was release.
260 is okay.

Got mine for $98.00 at Sam's Club on an upgrade, which is neither here nor there since I have 5 upgrades still sitting there on my AT&T account... you know, just in case I want to try something else.
Can't really count upgrade pricing here.
But $260 for an Infuse off contract is a really good price....
However, based on the phones you are mentioning it sounds like you are tmobile... If so don't do it....
Infuse does not support tmo aws 3g network.

I wouldn't go any higher than $200.
I'd consider $150 a "good deal".
Realistically I'd say its good, but better (and pushing the boundaries of possible would be 200)

If truly in a "like new" condition then I'd say it is a fair deal. I would however try to get him down to $220 or $240. I bought mine for $240 off Craigslist after the power button on my captivate broke.
I paid 300 for mine with out a contract. I also think that is a big part of it as if you do not plan to get lockinto a contract it is a good price. Like for me I took my work phones sim and put it into here so I could not get a discount from a contract.

Samsung makes me sad :(

Samsung were amazing with the Galaxy S line, no complaints there. The Infuse came along and it was pretty much the Galaxy's weirdly put together and slightly upgraded step brother. And as we all know, a hold over for the S2. Then the S2 comes out and everyone's excited. Hell yeah, party! Greatest phone ever made, yeah cool, whatever.
And we all love our phones. And then the Skyrocket. The freakin Skyrocket... This phone comes out a month after the S2. I mean, I love Samsung, but this phone release trend is outrageous. Yes people like HTC release a ton per year, but over many carriers. Samsung has three phones for the same carrier in six months. This just irks me. Please discuss.

Yep - I think you're right. I heard at LEAST 2 more Samsungs by the EOY for Android/ATT alone. Plus a few more for TMobile, Sprint and Ver.
Guys its not like iPhones where the new phone takes an absolute dump on your phone. Samsung puts their best foot forward on most of their phones. Keyword MOST. the new phones are just incorperating the new technology such as LTE for att. Just enjoy the phone you have knowing that its not out of date yet since the new iphone only has 1/2 a gig of ram

sorry to say this, but this thread is stupid.
that is like getting mad at mercedes, "i just bought this E class for 50,000$, now they come out with the new CLS!". haha
when you made your Android purchase, you have to accept that one fact that the turnover of devices are very very high... If you don't like this then you'd be better off with the iPhone.
Otherwise, think about how your phone, even though it might be like 4-5 devices behind the newest device, is still so much better than the newest iPhone in the market.

While I do agree with you to an extent, I think you miss an important factor that is causing this.
The Galaxy S line was 3G HSPA. Then AT&T launched their HSPA+ network, and the Infuse is "4G" with HSPA+ and halfway between the SGS and the SGS 2 lines. So the Infuse was thrown out there so Samsung had a high end HSPA+ phone. Then the SGS 2 came out as the full upgrade from the SGS line. It also had HSPA+ as that's still the dominant "4G" network for AT&T right now. Shortly after they release the SGS2 LTE with 4G LTE so they again have a high end phone on the best network AT&T has to offer.
So while it seems like they have released 4 phones in a year and a half, 3 of them upgraded their network support. They probably could have waited on the SGS 2 and just released an SGS2 LTE, but I suspect the SGS2 will drop in price faster than the LTE version will as the LTE network grows, giving them maybe a $100 and a $200 model, or even $150/200.
I don't think you'll see them release as many now that we don't have any network upgrades for another couple of years when they upgrade to LTE Advanced (and I suspect that will roll into LTE phones sooner rather than later).
But yeah, I know what you mean. I would have been pretty annoyed if I had bought an SGS2 and then the SGS2 LTE came out, but the LTE came out soon enough after the SGS2 that you could have returned the SGS2 for the SGS2 LTE if you wanted. They were JUST over 30 days apart, but the Skyrocket was announced before 30 days was up, so you could have returned immediately and used a temporary phone for a couple of days.
This thread isn't stupid...it makes a point
Their frequency of phone releases addresses AT&T's network upgrade needs, not Samsung.
AT&T contracts the OEM's to make devices for them. AT&T is paying boatloads for each device run. Thus they have an incentive to move 'old' devices out as soon as possible to make room for the latest tier. It's about recouping cost with device/accessory sales and new contracts.
Keep in mind, that unless you have confirmed LTE service in your area, paying full price for an LTE phone wouldn't make much sense. On contract? Sure and just wait for your LTE coverage to arrive.
AT&T got caught due to VZW's strong LTE push and the 'postponed' T-Mo M&A. So they have to make an LTE push in profitable markets and have a device that can answer VZW's offerings.
The bottom line in my opinion is for you the consumer to do your own homework and not rely on the salespeople to 'educate' you. They won't. They aren't trained to.
You have this forum, Google and more web rags on mobile tech than you could possibly read. A wealth of info for free where you can research and plan your purchase.
My Infuse and wife's Cappy are expected to remain in service for another 3 yrs. At that point I'll sell them to help offset the costs of their upgrades. If there's a need to upgrade soon than that, it'll be because the new device will fulfill a need these devices couldn't possibly fill.
Both of these phones are powerful and feature rich so I feel confident in their longevity.
Although, that flexible AMOLED screen tech is sexy!!! I'd love to see device designs!

The reason you piss people off so much is due mainly in part to how of an ass you are. Personally I don't care for iphones. Another thing is why is everyone who has sn iphone is a sheep? Some people genuinally prefer them. I think you talk way too much without thinking, and you really need to stay out of people's topics if your main objective is to cut them down, try to make every point they make seem invalid, and in a general sense just get on people's nerves.

Thank you. This is exactly what I was saying. And yes, I agree that the main issue is more than likely carrier related especially since Att is the only carrier that released a Skyrocket. This is what I'm looking for, discussion. Not for someone to sit here, call me stupid, and bash my topic and opinion in every way possible.

Skyrocket at Best Buy for 199.99 + Advice needed

Hello all,
The skyrocket is at Best Buy for 199.99
http://m.bestbuy.com/m/b/product/de...b=&st=skyrocket&scr=search&cp=1&sc=Global&id=
So this means the Skyrocket costs as much as the non-LTE Galaxy S II. Now my question is,do you think it would be a good idea to swap my Galaxy S II for the skyrocket while still within the 30 day return period? Would the LTE and faster processor be better "future proofing"?
Your thoughts are much appreciated!

Check the At&t store if you have one in your area. I went to best buy a couple weeks ago and it was $249. The At&t store was selling them for $149.
The i727 does have a faster clocked processor but the s2 you have actually SLIGHTLY outperforms the skyrocket. Not at all noticeable in my opinion. The LTE speeds are awesome though and if your area has any plans of implementing an LTE network I would switch.
Plus bigger screen

Skyrocket has no physical home button like the regular S2 does. It has better battery performance and faster potential data speeds. Definitely get the Skyrocket.

Here is my opinion.. The SR is a better phone if you don't plan on playing games on it all day or doing the "look at my really cool high bench score"
The proc in the og2 is slightly better with games .. graphics.. etc stuff like that.
Now with that being said..In the real world.. Most of us use our phones for work, talking, texting , browsing the web..etc.. the SR is perfect for this....with a few tweaks the sr is better than the og2 ...plus the LTE is nice..
Don't get stuck in the past...
I would get the SR.. all the ATT&T stores here in Houston have them at $149 with 2 year contract......
For me, i727 and i777 are dead even when it comes to pros and cons of one over the other.
i727 (AT&T Galaxy SII Skyrocket) - Internet outside is as fast as home internet. But it is not available everywhere, including your city that has LTE. Screen is bigger, but less battery life.
i777 (AT&T Galaxy SII) - Performance of everything, watching videos, 3D games, UI, compatibility of apps in the market, blows away the i727. Screen is smaller, but more battery life.
I love my Skyrocket, but I'm already wishing for an upgrade in the future. If the i777 had LTE, it would be the perfect device. But because of some licensing rights that Qualcomm has with LTE in the US, it seems at this point that all LTE devices will be crippled with a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor (like the AT&T Galaxy Note LTE). It is like they Qualcomm opened up a new freeway system. But to drive on it, you have to buy a car with a Qualcomm engine inside of it. But the Qualcomm engine can only do 45 mph. As for right now, all the negatives balance out the positives. And you are left yearning and screaming "WHY??!!??!! Why must you do this to me Qualcomm!?!?" And all the while Qualcomm is advertising their processor as the latest and greatest processor and you just want to throw up in your mouth.
There's been a lot of debate on this, and good arguments on each side. I love my Skyrocket, sometimes wish I had an og SGS2 for all the development support available, but the SR is still new and we will eventually get there.
The best argument for me was that LTE is the future, so the Skyrocket will have a much higher re-sale value in a year or a year and a half when you're ready to upgrade to the next greatest thing.
I never thought about re-sale value until I was able to sell my well-used Captivate for $150 last month--which was the price I paid for it a year before. Just something to think about...
Walmart has it for $149 I went to Bestbuy and they matched the price. Today.
Love the skyrocket. Been a great device so far. Im in Austin and got mine for $99 from an authorized reseller.

The Skyrocket's Adreno 220 GPU outperforms the Mali-400 MP4 in the standard Galaxy S II, though. The Galaxy S II seems to handle multimedia stuff better, but for fill-rate intensive gaming, the Skyrocket has the edge.
Performance can be a complicated question sometimes.
Ya but the new Skyrocket has a bigger screen and it's HD... So now what you gonna get???lol

you definitely don't want a sony phone lol
AT&T stores will price match for you too. I can't seem to find that Walmart price that someone quoted earlier, but I bought mine from my local AT&T store price matched to Amazon.com at $179. All I had to do was email the link to the webpage to the lady who was ringing me up. Amazon still has it at $179. So if you like dealing directly with AT&T stores, definitely get it price matched to the best price you can find.

I bought my skyrocket from an ATT store on the 27th of December, but it was for 249.99.
Did the price drop in the past two weeks or did that store just happen to have it listed 50 bucks above what the ATT website says?
If the price hasn't dropped (meaning that the store charged me 50 bucks more than if I had just ordered it online from ATT) is there any way I could complain about it to get that 50 dollars back? I'm betting there's not much I could do but it's always worth a shot.
Yes you should. Go to att rep and tell them to do price match and they will do it. They did it to me and got $100 back from them. SO i got my Skyrocket for #149.99.

Alright, where did you find it for 149.99 ? Lowest I can find is 179.99.
Ah, finally found it.
.. and I'm not allowed to post links. It's a search on walmarts lets talk page though, found it for 149.99.
Not sure why a normal walmart search wouldn't find it, but I now have a source for 149.99 hopefully they'll give me a hundred dollars back now

Okay I've been fighting with ATT for the past half hour, and they will only price match (and this is AN EXCEPTION just for me supposedly) the online ATT price (199.99). So that's fifty bucks back.
They are refusing to price match the Amazon (179.99) or WalMart (149.99) prices. Think it's possible to continue arguing with them to drop down to the walmart price?
If walmart won't pricematch go to Best Buy. That's how I got mine for $149. I typed in a zip code in New York on their computer on the At&t site and as soon as they saw the price, they price matched it.
I got mine for free on contract through Rogers..

I'm trying to price match with ATT. I purchased it from an ATT store (unfortunately). They will only price match with another ATT store. I can find 199.99 on ATT's website, but Can't find a zip code where it's still 149.99. What Zip code did you use to pull up 149.99?
I purchased the phone for 249.99 by the way, so no matter what I'll get at least 50 bucks back, but I'd prefer the full 100.
EDIT: basically I need a zip code that will make the ATT website say that the Skyrocket is 149.99. I keep getting 199.99

From tier 1, I've been transferred up twice so far. They are not budging on this. Any help?
Okay, I think I was upto tier 5 or 6, and they said they would refund the restocking fee, and let me do a full refund and order my phone from anywhere else I please. Jeez. I complained that it's much easier to simply refund me the 100 dollars but they were very adamant. Oh well.
