I am making an open source nightmode app for some rooted Galaxy phones. It has a bunch of modes, such as red, green, sepia, invert, etc. Red mode is good for preserving dark adaptation for use at night (e.g., astronomy). I like to read books in green on black print. Etc. ChainFire3D does some of this, but the quality of the red and green modes in GalacticNight is better (ChainFire3D just drops the green and blue components for the red mode, while GalacticNight renders green and blue in shades of red, which makes things look better).
The challenge of this app is that it is pretty hardware- and OS-dependent, and all I have is an Epic 4G Touch with GB. But I spent a long time looking at the ICS kernel source code for Galaxy series phones (including the Note). I also looked at an unrooted Galaxy Note on Samsung's Remote Testing Lab to see that control files were where I thought they would be (they were). Helpful testers on other forums have helped me get it more or less working on the Galaxy S2 and S3 with ICS (there was a problem with restoring the coloration after pressing the power button off and on; I don't yet have a report on whether the latest version fixes this). Now I'd like to get it working on the Note.
If you'd like to help, you can get the latest test build from here.
This is definitely test software. I cannot guarantee it won't do something terrible and unrecoverable to your display. But while I have had one user with an S3 report a freeze with an earlier version (this issue is now fixed), that freeze was easily recovered from by holding the power button long enough to power off the device and then rebooting. I would hope that any issues on the Note can be fixed by a reboot. (Note: Potentially the GB version might be a touch more risky as it has to modify files in /system/etc. However, the GB version has been thoroughly tested on the S2 by me.)
If you have the guts and time and want to test it, you will have my gratitude.
Eventually, the app might be extended to do other things, like adjust screen tint or sharpness. These things are quite easy to do once we get this running.
I am attaching a photo of this app in action on my GB-based S2. I can't attach a screenshot because the color adjustments happen between the framebuffer and the screen, so that the screenshot would look like nothing was happening.

Bump.
Anybody try it yet on a Note? As of version 0.11 it was pretty stable on S2 GB, S2 ICS and S3 ICS, with one bug (the screen colors reverted if you turned off the screen in the GalacticNight app and turned it back on) that should be fixed in 0.12. The Note is a different phone, but I think its mdnie handling, at least under ICS, is very similar to the S2's, so there is a chance it'd work. Of course, at your own risk.
I just tried it on paranoid android 1.3 which is based on Cyanogenmod10 ie jelly bean. It worked perfectly!
I've always liked the idea of inverting screen colors for night time comfort, but found the end result is pretty similar in the end because all the nice dark areas you has before end up as bright white! Have a look at angel browser, it has an 'inverted' mode which does something slightly different, resulting in less extreme bright areas.
It would also be great to be able to have per-channel fine control of the colors.

Eventually. It's more complicated than it seems, actually--the mDNIe engine lets you separately set RGB for each of eight basic colors (cyan, yellow, white, black, red, etc.). But to adjust each of eight colors is overwhelming. A user sent me a clever way that would let you do some of this.
I may do a lite version with just the presets and a pro version with the ability to create up to four custom settings.
Woking fine on paranoid Android 1.3 (cm10- jelly bean) and the red view is awesome ! Thanks !

Worked also perfect on CleaNote 5.0 (Samsung ICS).
Amazing app
was expecting something like these forever!
The only bug I found is that one time when my screen was off and I was going to unlock, the fist half second the screen turned on the image was normal and then became red again.
but I am pretty amazed with what this app can do. Deserves a widget like the one that comes with Galaxy S3.
Congrats!
Great app!!! Running it on cm10. I think if i use serpia will it saves battery?
works perfect on paranoidandroid 0.5, dunno if ill use it but i kept it on my homescreen just in case
Works great on n7000 cm9.
Many thanks!

Not really a bug. The OS returns the screen to something like normal after turning it back on. As soon as GalacticNight finds out that the screen was turned on, it turns it back. But unfortunately the notification is broadcast by the OS with some delay, and so GalacticNight is a bit behind.
I could get around this by watching the system log and thereby find out sooner about the screen coming back on, but that would use more system resources, and I am not sure that's worth it for preventing this flash.
Another trick, and maybe that's the best move, would be for GalacticNight to cover up the screen with a dark overlay when the screen is being turned off, and then only remove the overlay only once it has managed to restore the color mode.
Maybe the overlay could just have a larger version of the GalacticNight logo.
I implemented the overlay in 0.99rc3. I can imagine it would be really annoying to be in the dark and get a flash of white light even for half a second, so I put up a red logo to mask the non-nightmode screen. I'd appreciate a report.
If the logo annoys, you can turn it off in GN's settings.

Is my little red galaxy overlay working fine to prevent a bright flash when you turn on the screen?
Can someone upload this as an attachment?
I can't download it (I don't know why I keep signing in and it redirects once again to the sign in page)

Hi
Work fine on the note with ICS 4.0.4 LRI XEF
Just a few ideas ( i know it can make some work )
- Does any mode can increase battery life ?
- What do you think to offer the possibility to set one or more custom settings, a widget that activate-deactivate a specific mode should be the nirvana ?
- Do you plan to put the app on the google Market ?
- If you want to make a french translation i am your man.
Thanks for your work.
it's very very useful tool!

Hi,
We have been working in an experimental app and we whould like to share with this community.
The application is a Live Wallpaper where you can chose some of your installed app icons to be shown in the live wallpaper, hanging arround with physics. The icons will behave as launcher for their respective apps.
In the configuration you can limit the apps movement to only one of your desktops, the center screen.
Any feedback will be apreciated, we will be working on this app adding new features and solving issues if needed.
You can find it on android market, its free and the name is Gravity Home

I had the standard setting icons for bluetooth, GPS, Wi-Fi and Auto-sync previously. it would be nice if these also were available in the list of apps.
Bug:
The people icon doesn't open my address book when I press on it.
I've used it on the following phone:
Device: HTC Desire Z

Hi,
The gps/wifi/data widgets and maybe more are in our future plans
About the problem launching the address book, it has an easy solution, we had already fixed the camera , will be the same, probably on next update this week it will be solved
Thanks for the bug report and the feature request!
Will try it .......Maybe it might turn out to be a huge hit.........Anywhos nice concept!!!!!!!!!!
this looks amazing
keep the good work ongoing!
It doesn't look amazing, IT IS AMAZING !
So far so good, will report anything.
Thanks for this lovely thing
I just installed this to try it out and went straight to the settings to see if I could add some apps. I waited for the list to load then something strange happened. The screen froze with a few black lines across it and started getting brighter and brighter like the system was increasing the brightness above the limits or something. Sounds strange I know. I quickly got the cover off and removed the battery, phone is fine now but just before I removed the battery I noticed the usually pitch black background was now light grey! I've now uninstalled and I'm on Darky's ROM 9.5 with the Darky Core 1.4 Kernel. Modem is JVE.
I love it but i wish it worked properly on the EVO 3D, when you go to add apps it just constantly says loading and never loads any of the apps to show on the screen.
Very original and innovative concept. I absolutely love it. The icons move around clean and doesnt appear to bog the phone down to much.
Issue: on vibrant rom kb5 (Stock + rooted myself).
I have 4 screens (which highest is always the real "home" screen). Icons wont show up at all if I dont limit to 1 screen in the options.
If I limit to 1 screen, it shows up on screen 3 instead of screen 4.
Bloody amazing. Words fail me. Glad I have a Mugen barry in my Nexus though!
Amazing ! I love it.
I'd love to be able to shake my phone and have the icons get shuffled, would that be possible ?
Very cool! Great work!

Trying this on my HTC Sensation and its friggin sweeeeeeet. I loved the falling androids lwp but gave it up a while back but I loved the concept. This went to the next level. It's actually has function than just the looks!
Is it possible to add a custom wallpaper in the background? If its already there I didn't see it in the settings.
+1 to you OP!
Looks sexy, I'm looking forward to it
I can't find it in the market it said not compatable with my i5800 can u give me the apk or something to try?
Very original and very nice. I like it because it doesn't bog the phone down and is visually appealing to look at. No errors or problems what so ever on Nexus S running stock 2.3.4
I like this app. It looks great and works well. I have two suggestions:
1. In settings let me change it from a black background to a picture of my choice. I normally use a static image, but would use your app if I would put a static image behind it.
2. Let me choose which home screen the icons are on.
I dunno if this is pretty well-known or not, I do see a few threads in the Galaxy S II section, but I figured I'd let more people know since I just randomly found this on the market.
For those looking for a replacement to their stock lockscreen(and those craving the Honeycomb Lockscreen), SunPengfei brings us Ripple Lock on the Android Market!

There's a bit of customization that can be done and so far everything's worked pretty well for me. You can change the font color, style, and size. There's the ability to have app shortcuts as well.
The free version does sport an ad at the top, but there is a paid version you can buy. I'll stick to the free version myself, just waiting until the quality is a little better, but who knows, I might just purchase it anyways. It's only a buck and some change.
I think it's a great compliment to any honeycomb theme out there.
P.S. Would this be better in Themes? I dunno.

Yeah I thought about that, I've been all over my phone messing with Go Launcher and stuff, so I can't give a good reading, but I'll probably charge to full later and I'll take a look.
If anybody else decides to try it out, let us know!
I ran it for a few hours then it became very unreliable.

I had it for a week or so, and noticed it unreliable too (2.2.2)
Its pretty, and more convenient to "unlock" being able to drag the circle any-which-way you want... but meh.
Doing ok for me so far, but I'm hoping for updates to make it more reliable as well. I did read a few comments with some gripes, but I think it's got potential.
What ended up happening with it for you guys? Was it that 'double lock' thing?
The circle would get "stuck". Had to cycle the lockscreen (via power button) a few times to get it to reset and work. Also found it sluggish at times.
Overall, I thought it was good, if those problems were not there.. but at the end of the day, if its eating even a moment of extra battery, its simply not worth it for me.

Make sure none of the app shortcuts are broken, define a background image and make sure to set ALL options.
it wasn't until I did that that it started working good. REAL good. now I can have my camera loaded up faster than my stock lockscreen would unlock on my DX2
much faster and more useful than stock 2.2 lockscreen.
the honeycomb lockscreen from lockbot is better...
Works well except for the power button not turning the phone back on. Have to push the volume buttons to get the phone turned on to unlock.
Nexus S 4G with CM7 nightly.
You can also use lockbot, I'm not trying to troll but I've used both lockscreen replacements and lockbot seems more like the original honeycomb lockscreen. There is a free and pro version.
Check it out.

sadly it randonmly works on my x10, using 2.1 version, dunno what's wrong
sometimes it won't change to this lockscreen it gets back to the original one and worst to restart
Inspire 4g with cm7.1.0-rc1 and adw ex. It runs great except for one thing. EDIT: ok, so, using for a couple hours, i really hate the fact that the volume buttons will turn on the screen on. and, if i don't have it silenced, beep. Its really annoying, and i may end up just uninstalling it if it bugs me too much.
Free version is compatible with the Dell Streak, but paid version is not. I bought the paid version while using a captivate for a couple of days and when I went back to my Streak could not install the paid version. I ask the dev about it and sent information verifying my purchase and the response was that it is Google's fault. Won't fix the issue and won't refund.
Edit: I am on a stock ROM, so it's not because of some strange configuration.
This is my first attempt at android and java coding, I think it's shaping up nicely and would love your comments and suggestions.
It's a notification panel CPU, memory and network usage monitor, loosely modeled on the gnome panel system monitor. It shows free memory and highest cpu usage app. It also shows the top CPU using process and the top 5 as an expanded notification on JB.
I plan to release a free version and a paid one with extra features, once out of beta I'll turn this into an unlocker, so if you install this one now you'll get the extra features then.
So, what do you think?

I know GPU tracing was added in JB, I'm not sure if it's exposed to the OS or only available via debugging, I'll look into it. Changing the colors is being worked on.
I've updated the version in the play store with some checks that could have caused your FCs, so please, if you get them again, use the send report feature.
I've just posted an updated version on the Play Store, that adds a lot of new features:

Just one thing: it makes the led of my stock note 2 blink after a reboot, even when I stop the app in the settings and set it to not start on reboot. Starting and then stopping the app via the settings resolves the problem. I have to add though that I have light flow installed, so that might have something to do with it.

That's a weird one, I tried lite flow on my galaxy nexus and it's not triggering anything on reboot. In fact, disabling start on boot it should not do anything as the receiver checks the preference and exits if false.
I've just posted a new version to the play store, I rewrote most of the engine and added Holo style status bar icons, I guess it will take a few hours to show, but would you mind checking if it still triggers your led?
Weird indeed. But then again, light flow is known to trigger some pretty unusual behavior in some phones, that's why I put the blame on that.
Anyway, I installed the new version. No more blinking led on reboot, it seems to behave exactly as it should now. Thanks!

A friend is running your same setup but with stock kernel and has no issues, but can't figure how this could be kernel related. By crash report, I mean the one you are offered to send when you get a FC, unless that's not present on touchwiz. Either that or a logcat could be helpful.

- The status bar transparency (only enabled by default on the lockscreen, though Nova supports it as well) is kinda cool, but it also looks kinda dumb since Verizon made Motorola keep the icons blue istead of white for some reason.
- On the bright side, I can now see the battery percentage inside the icon at all times since it's white-on-blue instead of white-on-white like on Nexus devices.
- I like how it now displays full-screen album art on the lockscreen while music is playing (though now I'll have to put some time into higher-res artwork)
- Being able to select my launcher directly from the system settings is pretty convenient.
- The drag-to-focus update for the camera is a pretty cool.
- I enabled ART but honestly didn't notice too much a difference, and had to revert back to Dalvik due to WhatsApp being incompatible with ART.
(Minor) downsides:
- The battery icon is no longer aligned with the signal bars
- The notification icons are still blue
- No KitKat dialer (yet?)
- No camera icon with on the lockscreen

never knew this was around. Thank you so much! You have helped make my device a better device tonight! A christmas present from XDA! woohoo!!
Just a reply, after you enable battery percentage, you can remove the app and the change stays. Seems like all Android devices 4.4 can do the percent naively, this just toggles this setting.
Wonder what other hidden settings are in KitKat.

One plus is that I lost root lol. I need it as everybody else!
I'm a Fitbit user and take a lot of pictures. For me, the update (Fitbit support and touch-to-focus) obviously makes an everyday difference.
I use MX Player while I exercise, almost every day. Immersive mode with it is nice. More apps will have to adopt this before it becomes something I really care about. The thing where the lockscreen has music art is more of a noticeable design upgrade. Together, the immersive thing, lockscreen art, and transparent notification (I actually hide mine, though) make for the beginnings of a feeling of a polished and cool UX.
The thing to do would be to get two phones next to each other, one with the update and one without, and see if the updated one really is snappier (including task switching).
EDIT - Totally forgot: The wireless charging sound respecting my volume setting as well as the volume coming back on in the morning after Assist finishes sleep mode are huge. SO glad to have those issues resolved.
Yeah, so after a ton of fear of making the move to 4.4 Completely worth it.
When it started booting back up and rooted still (YAY) 4.4 is amazing.
Gravitybox + Xtheme (nexus 5 theme), you really can't tell the difference.
Just cant wait for Xposed to support ART. every reboot switches back to Dalvik
Another downside to 4.4 if not rooted is it removes native USB OTG. Menova USB drive no longer works without 3rd party software. Kinda pissed about this one.

Hmmm I have stickmount and it works like a champ on 4.4
My easy tether no longer works.

ART is the best thing, EVER.
Yes Xposed is no longer available to me (until the dev can make it work)
But WOW, its like my maxx just got the latest and greatest processor and a ton more ram. Performance is nutsssssss
Apps switch incredibly fast, and my battery life is even better now.
I'm gonna run benchmarks to compare
I'm a new user to this cool looking phone. I consider myself a pro user and like to dig through xda and the likes for stuff to do with my new phones. Is there anything cool to do to/with this phone? The forum seems a little dead... I'd be forever grateful if anyone can point me in the right direction.
Let me add that thus far I find this phone a little laggy in opening and transitioning between apps/screens. Is it suggested to lower the animation rate in dev ops to speed it up? Or is touchwiz just that taxing?
maybe start with tinkering with disabling apps that aren't needed by both you and the OS.
I personally don't experience much lag except for once in a while when I press the multitasking soft button, it takes an extra second to show up. i'm not on the native launcher as well. i'm fact (being rooted), i've even deleted it.
as a phone, I think it's the perfect size. the screen real estate of the N5 is just a lot better for my eyes - I can adjust for larger text and still have room for more content. but as far as the cameras go, since they're essentially the same, I rather use my S6e because it's physically smaller in-hand. it's also easier and more comfortable to handle for those rare occasions I actually need to make phone calls.
edit: maybe try this from the Note 5 thread...

there should be enough there that still applies.

I haven't been on stock but the Roms & mods out there are snappy and @Acoustichayes made a transition mod to scale down to .25

Yeah, transitions will help with the speed of course. I also just made a mod to speed them up even further. Like Soooperstar stated, realistically your best bet is to root and get a modified rom. There are currently 3 out there for the sprint version and all three are pretty snappy. If multitasking was your main concern, check out my Rom as i designed it with heavy multitasking in mind and its debloated. If you're looking for a very stock looking rom with some features then check out @ram9200 rom which has a standard and debloated version. If you like a lot of features with a stock look then check out @dazednconfused rom.

do any of those ROMs add any improvements to the native camera app? like what the Camera Mod offers or maybe just the same features like what the N5 and S6e+ already have?
i'll check those out.

so I went with yours. so far, so good. there are a few things though that i was wondering how to change. mostly because I can't really see what I'm doing.
some apps (and some settings menu) that originally had a black background with white text now have a white background with still white text, including Titanium...

maybe i'm missing it, but there's nothing in the bonus custom settings where I could change that. is there a mod I can use to correct it?
also, is there a way to remove the hidden power button in status bar? whenever I swipe to see my notifications, my thumb naturally swipes right at the middle making me shut the screen off every time.
other than that it's been stable. I haven't used any heavy apps, but have done a lot of multitasking without a hitch. I like that I gained about ~5GB of extra storage space.
TIA

Which version are you running? The background issue was fixed in version 0.9.3. And ill see what I can do about making a mod to remove the tap to sleep clock.
